Q. How do you come up with your incredible ideas for your editorials? I consider my self the “wallflower” or the observer type. I’m always collecting pieces of my every day that speak to me, whether it’s a person, place or a conversation. I’m continuously brainstorming and often times one idea will outshine the rest, and from there I’ll find myself dreaming of the execution for weeks/months/etc. Q. Explain the process of editing your sessions after an epic shoot! (When I behave and stick to my process) I begin by importing the RAW’s into an LR catalog and make multiple rounds of selects. I will start by flagging any useable images and then gradually filter them more diligently. I will then sync the final selects into photoshop to color and retouch. Afterward, I export the images from LR and lay them out as I would envision them to appear in an editorial spread. I find it important that the images work in a series. Q. If you could offer 3 pieces of creative advice to a beginner what would it be? 1. Never forget passion is the reason you started. 2. Constructive criticism improves your work, even if it’s hard to hear sometimes. 3. Find a mentor. Creatives need all of the encouragement and guidance they can get. It’s not an easy path and it’s nice to know someone believes in what you do Q. Do you feel you have made a lot of progress in the last few years with photography? Are you the type of person to always experiment and try to learn new methods? I believe I’ve made the most progress over the last few years. All thanks to my mentors and the people in my life that have guided, inspired, and encouraged my pursuits in photography. I consider myself very experimental which tends to go hand in hand with learning new techniques resulting in the evolution of my work. 11

HOW TO SCORE PAID GIGS AS A DEVELOPING MODEL. Written by: MATHIEU ROY Head of Marketing at Creators Magazine
“How to break through your local market and excel internationally” Getting paid as a model is really challenging. Like most creatives, you are a freelancer on the search for your next deal with a brand or business to propel you further. Is it hard? Yes. Is it worth it? Also Yes. We have spoken to many models, some who have started small and worked with local boutiques all the way up to models who are working with FENTY, jet setting around the world obtaining deal after deal. There are so many different ways to start turning your business into a solid stream of income. One of the most common methods would be finding a modeling agency, to work with and start finding jobs for you. This is where things get tricky. Once you sign with an agency, it can be hard getting out. You will want to make sure you do
20
your homework on each agency in your city or apply to ones online but be sure to do your research. The best method of knowing if an agency is a great match is speaking with the girls and guys who are already signed and see how the agency is treating them. Is their agent finding them jobs? Are they responding to their emails? Has it been several months between jobs? These are things you need to know. Most models in the agency will let you know right away if an agency is good or not. Of course, this isn’t the only way. The second way is by doing all the heavy lifting yourself, this way it’s more reliable income. You get 100% of what you worked for and it all depends on you. The best advice we have received from models who have started on their own and built a concrete business was finding a niche and concentrating on doing work with businesses within their niche.
CREATORSMAG.COM
#CREATORSMAGZ
Once you find your niche such as; lifestyle, fitness, or high fashion, then you can begin building your portfolio. When starting out with Time for Print (TFP) work, other developing photographers will help you learn the ropes of flow posing and learning how to be photographed. Once you have a great foundation of shots in your portfolio you can begin reaching out to local brands and businesses. Speak to as many marketing teams as you can that work within your niche and start connecting. Connections will be the way to grow. In order to achieve this, you need to go in person and speak to businesses within your niche and get your name out there. Having a website built or developing your own, will make you look professional and give a place for people to view your work and contact you.
When it comes to businesses, the goal is to connect with marketing managers, owners and company photographers who are decision makers for upcoming campaigns. This will give you the opportunity to get your foot in the door to become their go-to model.
Familiarize yourself with local professional photographers and make the effort to introduce yourself. Once you have established a relationship with a photographer, then you can collaborate with businesses to create a more in depth portfolio.
-You are looking at roughly $2500 per month. (This may not be full-time income but for some, it’s a great start and you can always add more businesses per month to grow your income. )
Working hard at building your reputation and meeting a lot of industry professionals will help you graduate from beginner to pro model quickly.
Here is an example of scoring a gig. -Your rate is $125/hour. -You negotiate a deal with several companies for new shots every month for their social media (4-5 hours of shooting each). -You work with 4 businesses per month (one per week).
Hard but not impossible. You made it this far didn’t you? What’s stopping you from going one step further?

Tessa Espinoza Q. What made you interested in modeling? I found the idea of getting into modeling intimidating until I witnessed the love and support within the creative community. It was that positivity and kindness that really made me feel it was something I could be happy doing. Q. Tell us your goals for modeling this year. This year I made it my goal to move towards more conceptual and creative projects and focus less on beauty. I want my photos to be as honest as possible. Q. What type of brands would you like to work with? I would love to work with brands who‘s goals go beyond just selling a product. It’s important to me that any brands I work with promote bodypositivity, inclusivity, and who’s products are ethically sourced. I also love supporting locally owned brands! Q. What are some things you wish more people knew about modeling? If there is one thing I’d like to tell people it’s not to believe in the stereotype that modeling is a shallow pursuit. There are a lot of models fighting toxic beauty standards and promoting self love every day. Personally, modeling introduced me to self love. Q. How did you figure out your own style? There is a LOT of trial and error when it came to figuring out your own style. It’s something I’m still working on. There is inspiration everywhere and it can be incredibly challenging finding yourself amidst it all, but the more I step out of my comfort zone the closer I feel to figuring it out.

hen living in Silicon Valley in California, I was inspired by the Hispanic influence in the region and I wanted to create an image of a Mexican woman with Vintage Western appearance. Although the natural landscape and layout of the area still preserves this feeling, the urban transformation that took place over the years filled the region with American single-family houses, and this made it even more difficult for me to find a building with the architectural design I had envisioned. I asked my colleagues, who had resided in the area for long years, at the photography studio I worked at whether they knew of such an area, and they told me that no such region existed despite the large Mexican population. Upon hearing this, I had no other choice but to hop into my car and start searching.
a
After searching far and wide, I found the house of my dreams on a side street in Santa Clara. The color of the walls, the architecture, the size of the windows, the cactuses in the yard… I had come across a house that had truly preserved its traditional essence. Right when I was about to take a picture of the house to show the model, a woman and her children stepped out of the house next door and asked what I was doing. She made it clear that the house was not for sale and that I had to leave immediately. Following a heated discussion, I finally managed to tell her that I was working on a photography project and that I admired their family for adamantly protecting their home adorned with traditional features despite its incredible sales value.
@Sezen.tezic Santa Clara, California
When I came back to the house with the model on the day of the photoshoot, we were warmly greeted by a big family. They gave us permission to shoot on the patio. I had the privilege to take pictures at one the few Mexican homes left standing in Silicon Valley, and I was ecstatic to be documenting this house in my pictures. -Sezen

y name is Sara and I started ZenFITa Luxury Holistic Lifestyle Brand utilizing an online platform that focuses on empowering clients with personalized wellness, fitness and nutrition strategies to better their lifestyle and become a better version of themselves. As a creator, one of the things I strive to do on a daily basis is finding that creative energy that allows me to visualize my business in the future. This is essential for forward movement and keeping my inspiration levels high. All creators want to be unique in their own way and find a way to express themselves with their own creative spark.
O
ver the years, I’ve found this energy comes alive when I go through my 3 step process (What I’ve come to design in my business- ZenFIT) of educating my mind, moving my body, and fueling my soul. Every morning and every evening, I go through these 3 steps. For example, educating my mind could involve writing my gratitudes or listening to a podcast. Moving my body could involve yoga, stretching, functional training- something to get my heart rate up and blood circulation moving. Fueling my soul involves aiding my body and mind with proper nutrition like fresh fruits and vegetables. When I do these things in the AM/PM, the bulk of my day (or mid-chunk) is filled with energy and inspiration and I can be the creator with that “creative” energy that every entrepreneur/creator craves and thrives off of. Sending love to all the creators out there! XO

Q. We love your aesthetic, where did you find your style? I am still searching for my style, every day and every photo shoot I am trying to find different ways to create, another way to be one of a kind. After many months in Asia I understood that I like to create boho and fashion stories at unusual locations and with different models. Q. We notice so much of your work really conveys emotion to the viewer. How do you portray such powerful emotions in your work? I perceive my models first of all as friends. A person in front of my camera should trust me, and only then should the person open up and show their emotion that I have been wanting to see. Communication about everything and anything is the key to successful shots! Q. What style of location makes you feel most creative and happiest when you shoot? I like simple nature locations: forests, fields, boho interiors, rocks, and stones. Also, I like deserted unique places, I like to see how morning and sunset light can change the average location. Q.What are your biggest challenges in Portrait/Fashion photography? My biggest challenge is showing people through my photos, how beautiful and different they can be. Preparation for photoshoots is also a big challenge for me because it is a very important part of the creation process. Q.Where do you want to see yourself with your photography in 2-3 years? In 2-3 years I see myself as a fashion/travel photographer. I will cooperate with more fashion brands and create stories for them. 57

I am an Italian full-time photographer focusing mainly on fashion, (Men - Women) beauty and portraits. I began my career 4 years ago when I was 33 years old. I have been a professional basketball player for over 12 years in Italy and had several work experiences in a corporate environment afterwards. I quit my Mon-Fri 9-5 daily routine in 2014 and slowly getting closer and closer to photography: first as drone photographer/videographer (which helped a lot in developing composition skills) and after as fashion photographer. I fell in love immediately with photography, especially because it presented me the opportunity to express myself and the way I see the world around me. But as a new path of life begins, there are so many challenges to face which I truly believe are the most important “screening filters for whoever really wants to be a photographer. The beauty is that everyday you learn something new and you develop your vision, creativity and human relationships.Being grateful is the most important skills to master as it brings positive energy and stunning results.
Q. How often do you travel for photography and where is your favorite place to shoot? I travel a lot in Europe. Cape Town is one of my favourite places to shoot as the light is incredibly clean, but you have to learn how to master it. Q. What are your biggest challenges in Portrait/Fashion photography? I believe the most important challenge is to make my subject comfortable and at ease before the shooting starts; I like to dedicate quality time to her / him. Q.Is there High competition in Fashion Photography where you live? I am from Milan, the Italian Fashion Capital city so yes, there is a lot of competition. On the other hand, competition is the fuel for creativity and I love to believe in Myself!
Q.What advice would you give a beginner photographer that is setting up their first editorial? The editorial has to be envision in your mind first, otherwise is just another sequence of images already seen somewhere else; prepare every details, be ready for disappointments but mostly, believe in your team! Q. What is the craziest photography experience you’ve had so far in your photo career? One of my early experiences as drone videographer, 4 years ago. I was assisting a German production team shooting a documentary in a lion sanctuary in South Africa. I was flying my drone about 4/5 meters from the ground and a lioness jumped and chewed my drone. 97

Inspired
by the recent Netflix series ‘Tidelands’, Jemma styled this shoot around the theme of being drawn to the ocean and water. As the sun rose across a central Queensland beach, the model Jasmin and photographer Jemma dragged an old vintage chest and a large mirror across the sandfor many metres in order to creat some Siren inspired magic in the blissful early morning glow.

STORIES
Chennai, India
hile creating the story ‘Walk to the wild side’ I put myself and my team in a very challenging position. So I live in Chennai, India and it’s extremely sunny and hot here all year round and it’s best to shoot either early in the morning or during sunset. We choose to shoot early in the morning but due to some reasons it was 8am by the time we started shooting. We were shooting in this white washed terrace and by the time we began shooting it got soo sunny that the terrace bounced back all the light , so much that we all couldn’t see anything. I tried controlling this by using coloured fabric as a backdrop. We went on shooting for another 3 hours and by this time I could hardly see what I was shooting. On the brighter side , all the harsh shadows in the face were filled in beautifully by the white washed flooring that I didn’t even had to use the reflector. The shoot ended on a good note but we all melted by the end of it. -Hunar Daga

n international eco wedding gown company got in touch with me and wanted me to model for their brand in Victoria, BC. The shoot was setup so perfectly. I met the photographer and designer early in the morning and talked about my multiple looks. The location was perfect, we shot on the beach and a vintage hotel. We were shooting all day long with 9 different looks. From eco business women, to gorgeous wedding gowns, these looks were flawless. I was able to add my own flare by bringing my pointe shoes for some stunning classic dance shots! It was a perfect day spent with amazing women, and now I’ve created life long friendships. -Alicia Maclaren @Makeupmedicc

Victoria, BC
y name is Jill, and I’m a Makeup Artist based out of Victoria, BC. I go by the company name of “Makeup Medic”, inspired by my other job; a paramedic. I have fun telling clients who sit down with me for makeup applications, and patients who wind up in the back of my ambulance, about my two completely different careers and how they intertwine. One day I could be, quite literally, painting somebody’s face. The next, I could be splinting somebody’s broken leg. I discovered a passion with makeup as a young teenager. My sister bought me a kids eyeshadow palette from “Claire’s”, and the rest of my collection was old Clinique products I’d salvaged from the bottom of my mother’s bathroom drawers. With the help of trial and error, hours of Youtube Tutorials, and multiple Sephora gift cards, I found out what worked and what didn’t work. I discovered my passion for emergency medicine in university, when I took my Emergency Medical Responder course. Soon after, I completed my Primary Care Paramedic course and became a licensed paramedic. I loved how “hands-on” and fast paced it was. Ultimately, I’ve always had an ambition to help people. As a Makeup Artist, I help enhance the features of individuals to create the most beautiful version of themselves. As a paramedic, I help people in their time of emergency. In both scenarios, it is a genuinely unique and personal experience, and I’m grateful to do what I do everyday. 135
