Salvation Stories July/Aug 2011 NEWSLETTER Captains’ Corner
Since I arrived to my new ministry appointment in St. Paul, Minnesota, I have been reflecting on so many things. My past eight years of ministry in Indianapolis, my future ministry work at St. Paul Citadel, and the calling of the twelve disciples and the ministry journey they took with Christ. They covered a lot of ground on foot, literally reaching out to thousands of people by teaching, preaching and exemplifying God’s love and desire for their salvation. Scripture taken from Matthew 4:12-17 reads this: Jesus Begins His Ministry Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those swelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach, saying “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (ESV)
I find this portion of scripture very inspirational. As believers in Christ, we have many opportunities to shine His great light to those who are living and struggling in the dark. We can take
His message out into our world and beyond, and never cease in living out its true meaning. Where is your world and beyond? It can be anyplace, such as your local community center, a local food pantry, or a homeless shelter. We can set an example to others by sharing the gospel, living a Godly example for others to see, by being a prayer warrior, and so much more. Today I challenge you to pray and search your heart’s desire. Find a place where you can shed a dawning light of Christianity in a world of darkness and bring the message of hope and salvation to your world and beyond. —Leti Crowell, Captain

Captain Geff ’s life verse is Romans 12:2—
Captains Geff and Leti Crowell were commissioned in 2003 in the Believer’s sessions. Their first appointment was to start a corps in Greenwood, Indiana. After three years, the little corps, held in a former storefront, was averaging between 45 to 50 in attendance. The Crowells were then appointed to the Eagle Creek Corps, and God blessed their congregation with much spiritual growth. The Crowells have been married for 29 years and have two children: Carmen, 22 years old, and Stevan, 20 years old. Captain Leti has her B.S. in Practical Ministry through Olivet Nazarene University, and Captain Geff is currently working on his degree and will finish this August of 2011. Captains Geff and Leti love the Lord and share a passion for outreach and church growth.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Captain Leti’s life verse is Hebrews 4:14-16— Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Court of Awards
Summer Camps: Northwoods
Over 30 children from the Citadel will be attending camps this summer at Northwoods. Applications accepted while space is available.
Corps Kids/Teen Camp ( July 26-29) is for youth who have completed grades 1-11. This camp is open to those who are not eligible to attend Troop Camp.
On Wednesday, May 25, we held our final Court of Awards for the season. Family members and visitors joined our youth as they were presented with emblems for participation in Moonbeams, Sunbeams, and Cub Scouts. Eleven girls earned the Commissioner Sunbeam award—this the highest award you can achieve in Sunbeams. Another highlight of the evening was a special recognition of Judy Secord for her faithfulness with our Sunbeams. The kids have worked hard all year and this special event recognized both them and their dedicated leaders.
Summer Day Camps at the Citadel

Sunbeam and Explorer’s Troop Camp ( July 5-8) is for youth who have completed grades 1-5 and are already a registered member of St. Paul Citadel troops.
We have three different camps running over the summer, from June 20 to August 12, to meet the needs of families. This year our summer day camp is seeing a whole new batch of children being signed up for our program. Parents are excited that their children will be cared for, fed and entertained with activities such as swimming, roller-skating, and having many exciting adventures here with The Salvation Army!
Boy Scouts: Richard Haus Cub Scouts: Norman Polusca and Tommy Vang Moonbeams: Brenda Line
Traditional Summer Day Camp PLUS Sport Camp. With full enrollment, our staff is hopping! Many of these kids, who have completed grades K-4, are also on-site for care before and after the camps. Summer Camp is Mon – Fri; Sport Camp is held three days per week. Middle School/ Junior High Camp is new this year, operating two days per week (9:00 – 3:00 pm) for youth who have completed grades 5 – 9. Our summer ministry totals more than 100 youth. Pray for our staff as we strive to make these camps effective and profitable in the lives of our kids!

Farewell Sunday
the many potluck dishes contributed by corps members. Kids had fun on the playground including some tug-of-war contests organized by Pao Vang. This year is our second annual picnic with a focus on reaching friends, family and community.
Captains Bob and Lisa Mueller have left to new challenges in Michigan. Their farewell Sunday service at the end of June was full of memories and best wishes from their Corps family. Two groups of children presented songs learned for the occasion. Pao Vang, Hmong Outreach Director, testified about the Muellers’ impact on the Hmong community, and what it has meant to him to have the Muellers as spiritual parents. Gabrielle Brown, on behalf of the Corps youth, talked about the love and encouragement the Muellers have consistently shown to her, leading to Soldiership. Brenda Miller shared some of the feedback received in preparing a farewell—again and again, a testimony to the impact Bob and Lisa have had on individual lives and on building a strong, healthy church body. Envoy Bill Miller, a longtime friend, spoke to their impact on his spiritual life as well, in providing a farewell to the Muellers on behalf of the division.
Corps Retreat at Northwoods
This year’s Corps Retreat at Northwoods Camp takes place Friday, August 19, through Sunday, August 21. This is our third annual Corps Retreat, and we will be enjoying many of the activities and camp features that have been available previously: swimming at the pool, s’mores over the campfire, arts and crafts, pontoon boating on the lake, and meals and fellowship time together. The event is for congregation members who currently attend church at the Citadel, and the schedule is designed with families in mind. The Corps Retreat is an opportunity to get to know your church family better and to enjoy a getaway at this beautiful campground.
Captain Bob also gave a message, noting that it was a sermon taken from his very first Sunday at the Citadel, discussing the qualities of church leaders and what the Corps should expect from their officers. On this Sunday, the message stood as a reminder of how deep a responsibility lies with our leaders, as both of the Muellers enjoined the church body to pray for and offer unlimited support to our new shepherds, Captains Geff and Leti Crowell.
Northwoods Camp covers 205 acres on Elbow Lake in Finlayson, Minnesota, 90 minutes north of the Twin Cities. In addition to the pool, lake, and outdoors spaces, the modern and air-conditioned indoor spaces include housing units for families and comfortable meeting, worship, and dining rooms. There will be a nominal charge to register for the retreat. Details on registration process and fees, travel and housing, and the schedule of activities, will be circulated by Sunday July 10. Our best testimony as a church body to the appreciation we have for the Muellers is our joy in welcoming the Crowells to their new appointment, and that we—as Captain Bob put it—“act like sheep!”

How I Decided to Come Join Our Army
This issue’s testimony is taken from correspondence received from Kelsey R. Ehlert, a longtime volunteer at the Citadel who is now working at DHQ. It is important to remember that our ministry includes officers, congregation members, and also those who volunteer and choose to work as employees of The Salvation Army—which, in all areas, holds to the mission of preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and meeting human needs in His name.
Dear Captain Lisa, I just wanted to touch base with you and let you know what changes have taken place in my life since our last conversation. I would also like to personally thank you once again for all of your advice and guidance.
A HOP Update
The Hmong Outreach Program, lead by Pao Vang, continues to be a key ministry in growing and feeding our church family. HOP is designed not just to provide fun activities and outings (which it does) but first and foremost to bring the Gospel to the children and families it serves.
After you put me in touch with Debra Wilken at the Northern Division Headquarters, I was given an opportunity to visit the facility and speak with some of the amazing people that work there. After learning that there was an open position, I immediately applied. Ultimately, I was offered the position of Donor Services Manager and gratefully accepted. Two days ago, I had my first official day on the job and loved it. I feel so blessed to have an opportunity to work in an organization and know that my work is contributing to something much more meaningful than I probably even understand.
As part of this program, the children have been in an Evangelism training class since the beginning of the year. Pao recently shared his belief that many students are now equipped with the knowledge and confidence to share the gospel with their friends and family. They have shared their personal testimonies on their Salvation experiences, and have learned that their stories and testimonies are the most powerful tools they have when evangelizing to someone who has never heard about Christ. Key factors used to train these students were: G Go to God in prayer daily ( John 15:7)
I would like to thank you, as well as everyone else I was given the opportunity to work with, for being so gracious and kind to me and making me feel so welcome. My volunteer experience at St. Paul Citadel truly changed my life. What I saw and experienced touched my heart and moved me in a compelling way and as a result of this I feel as though I have discovered what I was meant to do with my life. I hope to work with you again in the future and look forward to being part of such a wonderful organization. Thank you again.

Women’s Fellowship and Service
On Tithing
Women’s Fellowship, which meets on the second Friday evening of each month, provides social and service time for women currently attending our church. July’s gathering will focus on responding to the prayer requests that come in via the prayer box in our lobby, as well as social time with refreshments. Summer Bible Studies
Over the summer months, we will continue to host two Bible Study groups, but our start time will be 6:15 (rather than 6:30). If you are new to Bible Studies, you can join us at any point in the series. Current ongoing studies include Digging Deeper, an in-depth look and further study of the Sunday preaching passage, or The Church Ignited, a study on the book of Acts and the birth of the early church. Either study will ensure that you are in the Word and growing with the support and encouragement of other believers. Child care is provided.
Tithing and charitable giving is one of the most difficult steps for many new Christians and church-goers. How do you take that first step and make the commitment to tithe Biblically, when your family’s budget—and even the country’s budget—feels stretched too thin already? How do you give God’s portion back to Him, when you may be afraid of a possible job layoff...or sudden medical expenses arising...or even covering your basic expenses, like rent, from month to month?
Help Wanted
Yes, we need your help! Several positions are open for service at Saint Paul Citadel. No previous experience is necessary–only a willing spirit and sincere interest. All positions are volunteer only, but you will be surprised in how much you will gain.
The first step is the same first step you need to learn for any difficult situation: prayer. Speak your concerns in prayer to God, and listen with an open heart to the answers He has provided in His letters to you: the Bible.
We’ve highlighted some of these opportunities below. To learn more and discuss how to use your spiritual gifts and time to support our church, talk to Captain Leti or Captain Geff Crowell (651.224.4316).
Next: speak with your pastors. You can be confident that your Salvation Army officers will hear you with respect and caring, and will be willing to provide you with the practical guidance needed for this journey. In fact, it is literally part of their training to learn how to be responsible, effective stewards of all the resources with which the Lord has entrusted them for the growth of the Kingdom of God.
Chapel Specialist. Prepare for and clean up from all events in the chapel, including Sunday worship. This includes putting song books away and picking up left over bulletins. Classroom Specialist. Pick up after all small group sessions on Sundays and Wednesdays.
You know already that it is God that grants you the resources that surround you in addition to the incredible gift of life. This includes financial resources, whether they come to you as a paycheck for work you are gifted by God to complete, or by the gifts and grace of others who extend support to you. Everyone comes to The Salvation Army with their own unique financial situation and background. Trust your spiritual leaders to understand your worries, and offer you support in taking the steps, no matter how big or how many, toward tithing. Trust God in carrying out His plan for your life.
Cafeteria Specialist. Pick up after Sunday and Wednesday meals in the cafeteria. Greeter. Assist in greeting and welcoming church members and visitors on Sunday mornings. Usher. Assist in distributing bulletins and collecting weekly offerings. Assistant Sound and Video Technicians. Learn and assist with audio and media equipment on Sunday mornings. Video Editor. Capture regular and special events on video; edit these videos for future use.

There seems to be an increase in the amount of clients needing help who are out of work due to cancer. We are finding that it is happening with all offices. We are helping with an array of referrals, Heatshare, rent/mortgages, food, transportation to treatments and prayer. In most cases, their time is limited, and the best help we can provide is prayer, to help take some of the worry and burden for them.
Corps Historian. Research and update corps history. This may include creating scrapbooks and displays, writing summaries of events and working with Corps Photographer and Video Technician. Assistant Sunday School Teacher/SS Teacher in Training. Work with existing Sunday School teacher to learn lesson preparation and teaching. Work towards filling in for teacher in his or her absence.

The Salvation Army provides basic needs services to thousands of Twin Cities residents through feeding programs, food pantries, thrift store vouchers, housing, rent and utility assistance, transportation, medical aid, employment assistance and seasonal services.
