Mark your calendars for August 20th through the 24th, when the long and storied history of road cycling in the Gunnison Valley will come back to life. The Quiznos Pro Challenge professional road cycling race returns to Crested Butte, Mt. Crested Butte and Gunnison on August 23rd and 24th, 2011. The race, dubbed America’s Pro Tour by race organizers, will showcase Colorado through seven stages of grueling racing that will challenge more than 120 international and national cycling superstars. On August 23rd, the race is scheduled to start in Salida, winding its way over Monarch Pass and through Gunnison, then head up Highway 135 to Crested Butte, where riders will experience the magnificent views we all have come to love. After a trip down Elk Avenue, the riders will face another test as they race up to Mt. Crested Butte, finishing near the base area of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. Through it all, our little valley will be showcased on an international scale. After the finish in Mt. Crested Butte and a night of rest, the racers will start the next days’ stage in Gunnison and make their way to Aspen over Cottonwood Pass in what is sure to be the most grueling stage of the race. This event – the first of its kind in Colorado in many years – has already generated significant buzz throughout the cycling community here and across the world. We are expecting to host a significant number of visitors beginning the weekend before the race (August 20-21). In addition to enjoying the natural beauty of Crested Butte and being a part of cycling history in Colorado, visitors will be entertained by a number of events taking place in conjunction with the race – and no, you do not have to be a cyclist to participate! A sampling of possibilities includes a Townie Criterium, Strider races for children, and mountain biking with members of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. Our small community has responded to this event with a great amount of enthusiasm and excitement. More than 20 individuals have agreed to be a part of our Local Organizing Committee, and race-day volunteers already number nearly 100.
