Resort Comparisons Show Crested Butte Offers Best Value Whether you’re buying groceries at Clark’s Market, drinking an après-ski beer at the Brick or considering investing in the local real estate market, value is a critical factor in your decision making process. Every day, individuals all over the world make purchasing decisions based on a comparison of the perceived value of their options. Real estate – particularly real estate in resort communities – is no stranger to this scrutiny, especially in today’s market. Crested Butte’s real estate market offers greater value when compared to other end-of-the-road resort communities. A Magic Kingdom in the Mountains By Beth Buehler Bill and Jane Chaney had been looking for what would eventually be their retirement home for nearly eight years when they found the perfect lot on Kubler Street in Crested Butte South. They had put a deposit down on 5 acres in Ridgway and called to have the check torn up after visiting the Gunnison-Crested Butte valley for the first time in October 1999. “We didn’t know that Crested Butte or this beautiful valley was here. We had driven Highway 50 so many times and drove right on by. Finally, the skier icon on the map made us turn onto Highway 135,” Jane recalls. “At dinner that night, we said, ‘It just feels right here.’” The couple met in the 1970s while working for Vail Associates and knew they wanted to return to the mountains when Bill retired from Disney after 30 years, with 23 of those years spent in Orlando. For two weeks every year, starting in the early 1990s, they toured around and shopped real estate in places like Durango, Ouray, Telluride and Pagosa Springs. “There is something special about southwest Colorado. The advantage is the wonderful mountains and closeness to the desert,” Bill notes. The Chaneys both envisioned a log home on a river, so when their real estate agent Bob Kray took them to the edge of the Kubler Street lot in the River Rim neighborhood and asked them to listen, the sound of the bordering East River did its magic. The expansive views and frequent sunny days and Crested Butte South made a big impression on the pair as they signed on the dotted line and began building a prowfront log home in June 2002. They returned for the stacking of the logs and two other times for the interior framing and wiring; otherwise, they were hands off 2,000 miles away and let local builders and craftsmen do their jobs. They wanted many windows to admire the view and an open floor plan. A sprawling home was not part of the vision, so they built 1,200 square feet on the main floor that is their living, dining and kitchen area with two guest rooms and a bathroom to one side. Upstairs is an 800-square-foot master suite and loft for Jane’s office. The 1,200-square-foot walkout basement/garage houses Bill’s office, work area, storage room and three bays for cars. One of the standout features of the home is the 1,100-square-foot deck that wraps around two sides, a welcoming sight when the two drove into the driveway of their new home in June 2003. Bill had just retired early at the age of 56, and Jane was starting as executive director of the newly-formed Gunnison-Crested Butte Tourism Association (GCBTA) after working for Walt Disney Travel Co., Hilton, Marriott

International, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and Orlando Convention & Visitor Bureau in Florida. Shortly after moving in, they purchased the lot next door, which has become a fun playground for their rescue dog Annie, an Australian Shepard/border collie mix. TOP-NOTCH PERFORMERS GRACE 2011 MUSIC FESTIVAL LINEUP By Beth Buehler The Crested Butte Music Festival (CBMF), July 3 – Aug. 14, isn’t your average music festival. It distinguishes itself from other Colorado music events with extremely diverse offerings and the intimacy audiences can share with visiting artists from all over the world. Boston Brass will kick off the festival with concerts on July 3 and 4, including a free outdoor July 4 concert at the Town Park, and lead a brass camp for high school and college students. Where else can you go to a local barn, share a beer and brat with friends and listen to a symphony by Beethoven? “Have a Beer with Beethoven” has become one of the festival’s most popular concerts of the season, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 will be on tap July 21. Other symphony highlights are the hilarious comedy-duo à la Victor Borge, Igudesman & Joo, on July 17; film music from Hitchcock thrillers featuring this year’s special instrument, the theremin, on July 31; and five home soirées, which offer the ultimate in intimate performances in beautiful mountain homes. This year’s opera production “Carmen” will sell out, so buy tickets early. Under the guidance of Artistic & Managing Director Alexander Scheirle, CBMF started bringing in talent from the New York Metropolitan Opera and

London’s Covent Gardens several years ago. Today, the opera is a central part of the season’s program. Also performing will be members of the festival’s Marcello Giordani Opera Young Artists Program, which as grown from 35 applicants in 2008 to more than 500 for 15 spots in 2011. A new collaborative partner, Giordani, one of the bestknown tenors in the world, joined the program this past January and will help mentor participants. The American String Quartet will be in Crested Butte for a one-week residency, and The Kingston Trio is the featured entertainment for The Celebration fundraiser on July 16. Local newgrass great Drew Emmitt will again host Bluegrass In Paradise and play in one of 12 featured bands from around the country performing at the base of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. CBMF is also holding a Bluegrass Kids Camp for ages 7 to 17 from July 5 – 8. Django Reinhardt’s gypsy jazz returns to Crested Butte when the festival hosts DjangoFestä in Mt. Crested Butte Aug. 12 – 14. CBMF has something for everyone including a free concert series for families on Saturday mornings.
