TIME SPANS

TIMESPANS is created in the spirit of the late American Composer Earle Brown (1926-2002) Earle Brown was a major force in contemporary music and a leading composer of the American avant-garde. Since the 1950s his conducting techniques and experiments with “time notation,” improvisation, and open-form compositional structure have become part of contemporary compositional usage. Among Brown’s most frequently performed and reinterpreted works is DECEMBER 1952, the score of which is a stark, abstract series of floating rectangles – a musical equivalent to a Calder mobile.

JUN 25 JUN 27 JUN 28

JACK QUARTET JACK Quartet has performed to critical acclaim around the world and is the recipient of Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award, New Music USA’s Trailblazer Award and the CMA/ ASCAP* Award for Adventurous Programming. JACK has appeared at prestigious music venues and festivals globally.

ATTENDING COMPOSERS DAVID ADAMCYK creates musical works for the concert hall and the theatrical stage. He recently completed a doctorate from McGill University, Montreal and has participated in IRCAM’s composition program Cursus in Paris. His interest in technology has pushed him to explore various ways to combine electronic devices with acoustic instruments. OSCAR BETTISON is described as possessing “an unconventional lyricism and a menacing beauty.” His recent work has been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, musikFabrik, Slagwerk Den Haag, So Percussion, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the New York Philharmonic Contact! series and the Berkeley Symphony. ZOSHA DI CASTRI is a Canadian composer/pianist living in New York. Her work extends beyond purely concert music including projects with electronics, installations, and collaborations with video and dance. This year, she will work with several symphonies around the country. She is also finishing a doctorate in composition at Columbia University.

Leftover Cuties is known for a timeless jazz-tinged sound that combines sultry vocals, pop-perfect songwriting and the seasoned musicianship of Shirli McAllen, Austin Nicholsen, Mike Bolger and Stuart Johnson.

Eufórquestra is energy and rhythm personified by a sound that has been influenced by music from all over the world. For over a decade, the band has been igniting dance floors across the country, blending the roots of funk, soul, afrobeat, reggae and dub.

THE SUFFERS

THE FAMILY CREST

The Suffers, a 10-piece band from Houston, are redefining the sound of Gulf Coast Soul, intertwining elements of classic American soul with rock ‘n’ roll. The ensemble packs each position of the rhythm and horn section with talent and energy.

The Family Crest was started as a recording project to reinvent how music could be created. The outcome was greater than the original duo imagined, with 80 people credited on the first recording. The Family Crest is now a seven-piece core band with over 400 “extended family” members.

DON PASQUALE

CRESTED BUTTE OPERA STUDIO

Gaetano Donizetti’s delightful comedy has been an audience favorite since its premiere in 1843. The elderly and vain Don Pasquale decides he will marry the pretty young Norina, but she has other plans, and sets out on a course to get her own way with the help of the wily Doctor Malatesta. Donizetti’s tuneful score expertly traces the high spirits and humanity of this ageless story. Renowned bass Kevin Glavin stars in the title role along with members of the Crested Butte Opera Studio. Fenlon Lamb directs, with David Stern leading the Festival Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to their starring roles in Don Pasquale, members of the festival’s acclaimed opera training program will be featured in nearly a dozen performances, including an intimate cabaret evening, an opera gala with the Festival Symphony Orchestra, a special late-night performance at a local bar entitled Opera on Tap, and in master classes with tenor Barry Banks and dramaturg Cori Ellison.

GYPSY JAZZ IN PARADISE

Now in its fifth year, Gypsy Jazz In Paradise in Mt. Crested Butte will celebrate the music of Django Reinhardt, one of the most influential guitarists of the 20th century. This summer’s festival is now four days long, includes a stellar line-up of some of today’s most gifted gypsy jazz musicians and introduces the Frank Vignola Guitar Camp.

AUG 6 - 9

FRANK VIGNOLA’S GYPSY JAZZ GUITAR CAMP

OPENING NIGHT

Learn from guitarist extraordinaire, Frank Vignola, and other accomplished musicians. Camp includes warm ups, jam time, rhythm guitar, improvisation, a workshop on Django Reinhardt’s style, ensembles, and late-night jam sessions with performers.

AUG 7

HOME SOIRÉE: FRANK VIGNOLA AND VINNY RANIOLO The dynamic ‘Frank & Vinny’ show has been taking the guitar world by storm. They inject comedy and showmanship alongside dazzling virtuosity to deliver an eclectic set of popular tunes crossing all sorts of barriers into every performance. Frank Vignola is one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before the public today. His stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top ensembles, including the Boston Pops and the New York Pops. Guitar legend Les Paul named Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitar List” for the Wall Street Journal. At the age of 28, Vinny Raniolo has already proved himself to be among the elite. He has performed and recorded with Bucky Pizzarelli, Tommy Emmanuel and David Grisman, just to name a few. Since Frank and Vinny teamed up in 2008, they have performed over 1,000 shows at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in the world.

AUG 6

Ben Powell, Olli Soikkeli, Brian Netzley, Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo - The Gypsy Jazz In Paradise All Star Band - will be on stage for the first time ever and exclusively for this evening! Music by Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli and “Hot Club of France.”

AUG 8

CYRILLE AIMÉE BAND Jazz Times says, “It is impossible not to be charmed by French moppet Cyrille Aimée and her infectious joie de vivre.” Primarily raised in France by a French father and Dominican mother, Cyrille Aimée was a curious child. Growing up in Samois-sur-Seine, she would sneak out of her bedroom window to wander into the nearby gypsy encampments filled with those attending the annual Django Reinhardt Festival. She quickly fell in love with the gypsy music and way of life; years later she would sing on street corners with friends while traveling across Europe. While in the midst of one such odyssey, she found herself at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where she won first prize in the vocal competition - which included the financing of her first self-produced album. She now happily tours the world with her band as well as in a duo setting with Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo.

AUG 9

GYPSY JAZZ IN PARADISE BRUNCH Take in the spectacular view of Gothic Mountain, savor a delicious brunch, and enjoy Ben Powell and Brian Netzley with A Tribute To Stéphane Grappelli. Ben Powell stands among a select few as one of the leading multi-stylistic improvising violinists of his generation. He has worked with jazz icons such as vibraphonist Gary Burton, classical conductors Sir Roger Norrington, Marin Alsop and Keith Lockhart, and with composers such as Hans Zimmer and Alexandre Desplat. As a performer, recording artist, composer and ambassador for jazz and alternative string playing, Powell transcends musical boundaries. NPR has compared him to the late Stéphane Grappelli.

Described by the Boston Globe as one who “plays classical violin with the charisma of a rock star,” Juilliard graduate Charles Yang has performed as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals in the United States, Europe, Brazil, Russia, China, and Taiwan, and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors.
