CREATING MORE PREGNANCIES By: Patsy Houghton, President and General Manager, Heartland Cattle Company Heartland Cattle Company is a 5000-head Professional Heifer Development and Research Center located in southwest Nebraska. Long-term customers and employees are hallmarks of the Heartland program. Over the past 26 years, we have developed and artificially inseminated (A.I.) over 105,000 estrous synchronized beef heifers representing 31 states. We believe in closely defined (35 or 45 day) breeding programs using visual heat detection along with total A.I. and do not provide any excuses for open heifers. Over the life of the business, we have routinely met fertility targets of 70% first service conception rate (FSCR), 85% seasonal pregnancy rate (PR) for 35-day heifers and 90% PR for 45-day heifers. These fertility goals remain in place today.

Over the past few years, we’ve noticed a distinct trend toward increased variation in service sire fertility. It is no longer unusual to see A.I. service sire fertility range from 50 to 90% for FSCR, with outlier bulls ranging all the way from 0 to 100%. We’ve also learned that, by itself, evaluating semen under a microscope for morphology, motility and morbidity is not always a good predictor of subsequent A.I. sire fertility. Wide variations in FSCR often translate into reduced seasonal PR, fewer calves born and less pounds weaned. This is why fertility is so important to a rancher’s bottom line. Any measure that predicts and/ or improves service sire fertility will

help keep cow/calf producers in business, especially during tough market times! The ability to identify A.I. sires that will consistently deliver a 70% and higher first service conception rate is a big step in the right direction. That’s why we pay close attention to the PregCheck™ fertility rankings GENEX provides. Using 100 as the base, PregCheck™ fertility rankings are calculated as an index and are designed to predict an individual sire’s frozen semen conception rate. So, let’s compare two bulls with PregCheck™ rankings. Bull A has a 104 PregCheck™ with 93% reliability versus Bull B with a 99 PregCheck™ and 75% reliability. At 93% reliable, we are confident Bull A will perform

at 4% above the average of his contemporaries for conception rate, and he is likely 5% higher than Bull B for conception rate. At only 75% reliable, there is still some uncertainty as to how Bull B will actually perform over time until he is bred to more females, but at this point Bull B is trending below the average of his contemporaries. At Heartland Cattle Company, we appreciate the value of measuring economically important traits. Fertility tops this list! On the other end of the fertility spectrum, we are also confident any sire that doesn’t meet reasonable conception rate

If we time-bred a group of synchronized cows and 65% were pregnant as a result of artificial insemination (A.I.), most of us would be happy with the results. Many factors would contribute to that success: adequate body condition score, sufficient days post-partum, good protocol compliance, proper semen handling and A.I. technique, etc. However, what if you also knew fertilization occurred in just over 90% of the females? And what if pregnancy rates were closer to 40% with the same 90% originally fertilized? Would we still be happy?

Background The first 50 days after breeding is a critical window in the life of a gestating calf. In the span of less than two months, our future calf crop transforms from microscopic

sperm and egg cells into fetuses that are slightly smaller than a manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fist. By the first two months of gestation, calves also have a majority of all organ systems developed. However, for every two breedings that result in a successful pregnancy, at least one breeding results in a fertilized embryo that was lost somewhere in the first 50 days of gestation. Researchers of North Dakota State University (NDSU) are currently investigating unknown aspects of how nutritional management affects development of gestating calves during this critical first 50 days of early pregnancy. Once we better understand what might be causing fetal loss and altered development, altering management strategies to mitigate losses can begin. Continued on next page.

What do we know and what can we do about it? Administering vaccines close to the time of breeding (off-label) poses a real danger that the pregnancy rate with A.I. could be compromised, especially in the case of modified-live vaccines. Some vaccines can cause short-term infections that may harm oocyte/embryo development or temporarily disrupt normal reproductive function. Be sure to follow all label instruction for timing of vaccine administration.

Embryos at 34 Days of Gestation

Embryonic loss can also result from cattle that become stressed after breeding. An embryo within five days of gestation is protected in the oviduct of the reproductive tract and is less sensitive to stress compared to an embryo in the uterus. To help prevent or reduce stress in pregnant cattle, it is suggested to refrain from shipping them between days 5 and 42, as up to 10% of pregnancy losses can occur simply because cattle were shipped at the wrong time. Keep in mind losses are also possible when cattle are shipped between 42 and 60 days, but the risk lowers as gestation progresses. Even trailing cattle to their next pasture can be a stressful event if low-stress handling principles arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t followed.

Non-Viable embryo

Heat stress can impact embryo survival as well, so be proactive with weather monitoring, and ensure cattle have access to quality water and shade. If cattle need to be handled during heat events, move working hours to early mornings or consider the option to delay handling in extreme weather cases if possible. Diet and environmental changes immediately post-breeding also can impact pregnancy losses. Moving heifers from a dry lot setting to a pasture immediately after breeding can cause a reduction in pregnancy rates. If possible, give heifers previous exposure to summer grazing pastures before breeding and turnout or provide a supplement after heifers are moved on pasture.

What donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t we know and what are we evaluating? The research group at NDSU has recently developed a method to study factors that affect embryo development. The latest project compared embryo, uterus and placenta development up to day 50 in heifers. The heifers were split into two groups that were on different planes of nutrition at the start of A.I. After they were bred, one group of heifers gained 1 lb. per day (Control), and the other group did not gain any weight (Restricted). Even with the moderate difference in diet, the research group saw major impacts on nutrients supplied in fetal fluids. Changes in nutrient transporters as day of gestation advanced from breeding to day 50 were also observed. Gene expressions of key proteins that help the embryo attach in the uterus were also changed. Using a powerful tool to sequence RNA, NDSU researchers uncovered the two maternal diets resulted in large numbers of differential expressed genes in muscle and other tissues from 50-day-old developing fetuses. It is not clear how differences seen in developing fetuses are ultimately translated to differences throughout the lifetime of the calf crop; however, the take-home message is: a moderate dietary change in heifers from breeding to day 50 of gestation can have major impacts on gene expression during early embryo development. Certainly these results will pave the way for much more research with a common goal; to help improve the reproductive efficiency and productivity of beef cattle. ď Ž

Once the animal’s attention is on you, the timing of how much you pressure and the kind of pressure is also very important to not only get the animal to do what you would like, but also to keep it doing it. You must become

more important than every other stimulus in the environment, but not scare the animal by applying too much pressure.

Here is the order I think one should take when moving livestock… Before penetrating the animal’s flight zone, approach from an angle and use a speed that lets the animal realize the pressure you are applying. When you get a response, immediately change your pressure to reward the animal or to reassure the animal and to get it thinking out of the pressure. The timing of this is important. The closer you make the change in pressure to them thinking about it, rather than physically doing it, the better the timing.

Once you find the pressure zone that creates movement then you can change the angle of the pressure to create direction. You may be wrong in your estimations and this is when you time your change of pressure to get the direction you want. By your timing of pressure and also the release of pressure, the animal is learning to take your pressure and work for you. No matter if it is a herd of livestock or a single animal, I treat them the same way. With one animal I get movement that fits the situation, then try to point the nose where I would like it to go. With a herd it is important to get proper movement, then establish direction with the lead animals without stopping the movement of the herd. 

HPG, HP: Heifer Pregnancy (Red Angus, Angus) – Differences in percent probability of female progeny conceiving to calve as 2-year-olds; a more accurate measurement than her sire’s or paternal brothers’ scrotal circumference. MkH: Milking Herds (Angus) – Indicates the number of herds from which daughters are reported. MkD: Milking Daughters (Angus) – Reflects the number of daughters having progeny weaning weight records included in the analysis. SIRE INFORMATION $F: Feedlot Value (Angus) – Calculates a $/head difference in expected progeny performance for post weaning merit. $F uses WW and YW EPDs along with trait inter-relationships. Typical feedlot gain value, feed consumption and cost differences are accounted for in the final calculations. $G: Grid Value (Angus) – Combines quality grade and yield grade attributes, and is calculated for animals with carcass EPDs, ultrasound EPDs or both types of EPDs. A three-year rolling average is used to establish typical industry economic values for quality grade and yield grade schedules. $B: Beef Value (Angus) – The expected average dollar per head difference in the progeny post weaning performance and carcass value. The $B value is comprised of two pieces: $F and $G. API: All–Purpose Index (Simmental) – Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with daughters retained and remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. TI: Terminal Index (Simmental) – Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold on a grade and yield basis. BMI$: Baldy Maternal Index (Hereford) – An index to maximize profit for commercial cow/calf producers who use Hereford bulls in rotational crossbreeding programs on Angus-based cows and heifers. Retained ownership of calves is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef® (CHB) pricing grid. CEZ$: Calving EZ Index (Hereford) – Similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are mated only to yearling heifers. Increased emphasis on CE and MCE compared with the other index BII$: Brahman Influence Index (Hereford) – This index is similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are used in rotational crossing with Brahman rather than Angus. Greater emphasis placed on traits deficient in Brahman-cross cattle, (fertility and age at puberty) and less on acceptable traits (growth and calving ease). CHB$: Certified Hereford Beef Index (Hereford) – A terminal sire index where Hereford bulls are mated to British-cross cows and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB pricing grid. HB: HerdBuilder (Red Angus) – Used by producers to increase the sustainability of the cow herd and ultimately their operation. HB assumes bulls will be mated to both cows and heifers, replacement females will be retained within the herd, and the remaining progeny will be sold on a quality based carcass grid. GM: GridMaster Index (Red Angus) – Used by producers whose primary goal is to maximize profitability of feeders in the feedyard and on the rail. GM assumes bulls will be mated to cows only, and all progeny will be sold on a quality based carcass grid. TSI: Terminal Sire Index (Charolais) – Combines BW, WW, YW, REA, HCW, MARB and FAT into one single value. The TSI uses estimates of the genetic relationships between traits with an economic default value based on three year rolling USDA data.

Genetic Defects In the last couple of years several genetic defects have been identified in Angus and other breeds, defects which include Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA), Developmental Duplication (DD), Osteopetrosis (OS) and Oculocutaneous Hypopigmentation (OH). It is important for A.I. companies to be vigilant concerning genetic defects as the opportunity to increase the frequency of these negative traits on the population can be significant. With bulls selling 50 to 100,000 units, a single carrier bull can widely spread a genetic problem. GENEX has worked hard to ensure this does not happen. All GENEX bulls listed in this directory have either been tested or are known free by pedigree for the major genetic defects unless otherwise stated.

CALVING EASE RATINGS Take Calving Ease and Birth Weight EPDs and accuracy into consideration, as well as reports from progeny test herds and breeders. Young, low accuracy sires are not rated.
