William Boyce, the English contemporary of Handel, wrote eight symphonies. His Symphony No.5 is a fitting fanfare to open the season, similar in style to Handel's "Water Music." We welcome the debut of Russian virtuoso Ilya Kaler, with Tchaikovsky's seminal Violin Concerto. The 4th Symphony of Schubert, the "Tragic," demonstrates Schubert's mastery of mood and mystery.

Mozart’s Symphony No. 30 provides a dashing overture to start the program. Ana Vidovic returns with Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Guitar Concerto No. 2. This modern Spanish composer writes idiomatically for both the guitar and chamber orchestra. Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3 in D minor is a compelling work as he explores the themes in a formal structure, enhanced by the transparency of a smaller string section.

Violin Concerto in D major
Julian Rhee VI O L I N with Narrator James DeVita
Fifteen-year-old Milwaukee violinist Julian Rhee wowed audiences in the summer of 2015 as our young artist competition winner, performing the first movement of Brahms Violin Concerto. He will return to perform the entire concerto as a featured soloist. His maturity and understanding of this work is remarkable, compelling and awe-inspiring. Stravinsky’s narrated chamber work is one I have waited for a long time to program and with two previously narrated works under our belt, it is time for “L’histoire du Soldat.” Narrator Jim DeVita tells the story of a soldier who sells his soul to the Devil. Haydn is never too far from our repertoire, and makes a great pairing with Brahms.

A concert of contemporaries features three composers from the mid-twentieth century. Madison's own Vicki Powell, violist, performs the Suite for Viola and Chamber Orchestra by Vaughan Williams, with eight short movements covering a variety of dance styles, putting both soloist and orchestra through their paces. Benjamin Britten honors his teacher, Frank Bridge, with his early string work. Keeping things on British soil, the romantic and soulful “Benedictus” by Sir Alexander Mackenzie, Elgar's teacher, sets the stage for Aaron Copland's perennial “Appalachian Spring.” A fitting conclusion and celebration of life.

Ravel's “Tombeau de Couperin” led the way to a revival of old dance forms and a movement towards neoclassicism when completed in 1917. We are excited to feature a commissioned work by New York composer Tom Cabaniss, for duo pianists and former Madisonians Jessica Chow and husband, Michael Shinn. They have uncanny musical chemistry. We conclude the season in grand style with Schumann's Symphony No.2, a stunning work that showcases all sections of the orchestra.
