Landfall in Unknown Seas
SAINT-SAËNS
Landfall in Unknown Seas is a narrated text with string accompaniment by New Zealand poet Allen Curnow, and music by Douglas Lilburn. Written in 1940 for the New Zealand centenary,
Symphony No. 2 in A minor it describes early pioneering days and shares the

spirit of independence and energy of our nation. Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 2 is a forgotten gem. Completely overshadowed by his Organ Symphony (No. 3), his earlier two symphonies give us a glimpse of his mastery of orchestration and melody. We celebrate Madison native Ben Beilman’s much anticipated return, with Beethoven’s enigmatic Violin Concerto in D.

JANUARY 22, 2016 | 8 PM | CAPITOL THEATER Adam Neiman’s 2007 recording of the early Mozart Concerti continues to be a best seller for the chamber orchestra and we look forward to his return for two concertos from the twentieth century: Shostakovich’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 2 of Fantasia 2000 fame and Poulenc’s rarely heard Piano Concerto. Steeped in the impressionist language of Debussy and Ravel, yet with Poulenc’s distinct voice, this concerto will surprise you with its lyricism and originality. HAYDN
Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 and Nielsen’s Flute Concerto make a great pairing on this program featuring the flute. Recently appointed to the faculty at the University of Connecticut, Dionne Jackson returns after making her debut in 2000. Based upon lute music from the sixteenth century, Resphigi‘s Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 1 is a beautifully crafted work for chamber orchestra. We conclude with Haydn’s Symphony No. 79 in F, and a riveting finale.

ALEXANDER SITKOVETSKY MARCH 18, 2016 | 8 PM | CAPITOL THEATER Recent European prize winner Alexander Sitkovetsky returns to Madison for an encore performance of Barber’s effervescent Violin Concerto. We open with Irish composer Joan Trimble’s ethereal Suite for Strings from 1955, the perfect complement to Swedish composer Lars Erik Larsson’s popular Pastorale. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B flat major, like his sixth symphony, celebrates the joy, fullness and robust qualities of life. With its driving finale, it always packs a punch.

A true statesman of the piano, Irishman John O’Conor celebrates his heritage with compatriot John Field’s Piano Concerto No. 1, along with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major (Elvira Madigan). Carl Maria Von Weber is known more popularly by his operatic overtures and concertos. We open with his Symphony No. 1 and a chance to delve more deeply into this early Romantic master. Stravinsky’s short neoclassical work, Suite No. 1 for Small Orchestra, opens the second half of our season finale concert.
