C.P.E. BACH Sinfonia in A major SCHOENBERG Chamber Symphony No. 1 BRAHMS Double Concerto in A minor WITH GUEST VIOLINIST & GUEST CELLIST

SOH-HYUN PARK ALTINO & LEO ALTINO Composed in 1887, the Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, was Brahms’ final work for orchestra. We are thrilled to showcase newly appointed UW violin professor Soh-Hyun Altino and cello virtuoso Leo Altino as soloists for this soul-searching work. Carl Phillippe Emanuel Bach, the second son of Johann Sebastian Bach, bridges the gap between his father's Baroque style and the Rococo style of the classical era. The fourth symphony of his six Hamburg string symphonies points towards the dramatic style known as sturm und drang (“storm and stress”) of the 1860s and 70s. Arnold Schoenberg composed his two chamber symphonies in the early twentieth century. Having performed his second chamber symphony in 2015, we turn now to his challenging Chamber Symphony No. 1, an intense and provocative work.

GOUNOD Petite Symphonie PROKOFIEV Violin Concerto No. 2 TCHAIKOVSKY Serenade for Strings WITH GUEST VIOLINIST

GIORA SCHMIDT The Tchaikovsky Serenade is truly a masterpiece. The symphony highlights Tchaikovsky’s superb gift for melody and virtuosity. Counterbalancing this epic work, we open with a gem for wind players, Gounod’s delightful Petite Symphonie. In between this showcase for winds and strings is Sergei Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.2 with famed Israeli virtuoso Giora Schmidt. The New York-based soloist brings incredible lyricism and soulfulness to this intimate and poetic work.

J.S. BACH Suite No. 4 in D major MACDOWELL Piano Concerto No. 2 in D minor SCHUMANN Symphony No. 3 “Rhenish” 2018

WITH GUEST PIANIST

ALEXANDRE DOSSIN Bach ‘s Suite No. 4 provides the prelude to Edward MacDowell’s mighty Second Piano Concerto. An American original, the composer and piano virtuoso spent time in Paris and Frankfurt before returning to Boston in 1888. This seminal work has all the hallmarks of the late nineteenth-century Romantic tradition and anticipates Rachmaninov. It will be performed by Brazilian pianist Alexandre Dossin, First Prize winner at the 2003 Martha Argerich International Piano Competition. The Symphony No.3 “Rhenish” by Robert Schumann is a work of great beauty and power, written during a time of great joy in the composer’s life.

ROSSINI String Sonata No. 2 PAGANINI Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor HAYDN Symphony No. 81 in G major WITH GUEST VIOLINIST

ILYA KALER The sensational debut of Ilya Kaler at our 2016 opening concert drew immediate cries to re-engage him at the earliest possible time. Winner of three international violin competition gold medals, his Tchaikovsky performance was thrilling and unforgettable. He returns to perform Paganini’s signature violin concerto "La Campanella," so named for the bell part in the final movement. Rossini wrote his six string sonatas in three days in 1804 when he was just 12 years old. They show an extraordinary precociousness and depth of emotion. The second sonata is an example of the influence of Mozart, and the slow movement particularly anticipates Rossini’s later operatic aspirations. Symphony No. 81 is vintage Haydn, full of good humor, energy and lightheartedness.

BEETHOVEN Overture to King Stephen BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5 in C minor

2018

WITH GUEST PIANIST An all-Beethoven program completes the season. The Overture to King Stephen was commissioned in 1811 as a commemorative work to celebrate the founding of Hungary in the year 1000 by King Stephen I. It included an overture and nine vocal numbers that show a more playful and dramatic side of Beethoven’s personality. Pianist John O’Conor mesmerized and delighted us with his masterful performances of Mozart and John Field in 2016. Back by popular demand, he performs Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor which, along with the famous (or should we say infamous) Symphony No. 5, promises to rock the house.
