Update: Wallace Road Shooting

[Jackson, TN] On December 4, 2024, the Jackson Police Department, in partnership with the United States Marshals, apprehended DeAndre Perry, a suspect in the Wallace Road shooting that occurred on November 26, 2024. In that incident, five individuals, including a two-year-old child, were shot, and tragically, the child succumbed to the injuries.

Jackson, TN — The West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex has been honored with the prestigious 2024 USSSA Baseball Complex of the Year Award. This recognition was announced during the 2024 USSSA National Convention in San Antonio, TX, cementing the Sportsplex’s status as one of the nation’s premier youth baseball facilities.

This distinguished award is presented annually to a facility that exemplifies excellence in supporting the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) and hosting outstanding USSSA baseball programs. Elks Lodge Awards Hoop Champions

For the first round, the winners were Kensley Toliver and Karson Brown of Brownsville for the 8 and 9 yearolds. Edi’Yanna West and Landon Burton of Brownsville won the 10 and 11 year olds while Anaiyah Cole and Javien McGee of Jackson took home the honors in the 12and 13 year old category.

They all advanced to the second round in Huntingdon for the District Championship held on December 8th at the Middle School.

In Huntingdon, Kensley Toliver, Landon Burton and Edi’Yanna West all won first place and advanced to the state competition in Franklin, Tennessee on February 9, 2025 for a chance to go on to the national competition in Chicago.

Frankie Lax Show Ends at 93.1

Local radio show icon Frankie Lax has ended his current show at 93.1 FM show called the Frankie Lax Show. Lax had been the afternoon drive host in SuperTalk 93.1 owned by Grace Media which also owns 101.5 Newstalk. His last show date was last Friday in the downtown radio studios.

Lax said he has been hosting this show over a year and indicated recent uncertainty and an unstable work environment influenced his decision to quit working for Grace Media.

“I’ve worked in commercial radio most of my life since high schools days and have always enjoyed the loyal listeners, callers and area support” said Lax.

Lax also owns Maxxguard Security Agency and is an advid supporter of conservative Republican values and candidates. He has built a close relationship with United States Senator Bill Hagerty and Senator Marsha Blackburn. Both Senators along with other area state senators and legislators have been regular guest on his afternoon shows. Lax said he’s not sure what the future holds regarding his being part of commercial radio again, other than to say, “never say never” as sometimes, he said, “opportunities come knocking when you least expect it.”

This type of community and law enforcement collaboration is vital for achieving progress. We encourage citizens to continue providing any information they may have, as we will exhaust all available resources to bring those responsible to justice," said Chief Thom Corley.

Update: Windy City Road Crash

On Sunday, August 4 at 7 p.m., officers of the Jackson Police Department responded to the intersection of Windy City Road and McClellan Road where they encountered a deadly crash involving two vehicles. A 22-year-old male and a 21-year-old female were pronounced deceased at the scene. The sole survivor in the same vehicle, a 17-year-old female, was extricated and flown to Regional One in Memphis. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to a local hospital, was treated for her injuries, and was then taken into custody.

After a thorough investigation by the Jackson Police Department’s Traffic Unit, all evidence and findings were presented to the District Attorney’s office. On 12/02/24, an empaneled Madison County

Grand Jury indicted Katrina Michelle Salmons of Bells, TN for her involvement in the deaths of Connor Alexander White and Aaliyah Alexandra Ayala.

Salmons has been charged with two counts of Vehicular Homicide, one count of Vehicular Assault, two counts of DUI, one count of Reckless Driving, one count of Speeding, one count of Disobeying a Stop Sign, one count of Driving on a Suspended/ Revoked/ Canceled License, one count of Violation of Open Container Law, one count of Possession of a Legend Drug, one count of Violation of Seat Belt law, and one count of Violation of Financial Responsibility Law.

The Jackson Police Department asks that you still keep the families of Connor Alexander White and Aaliyah Alexandra Ayala in your thoughts and prayers. This senseless tragedy is a stark reminder not to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated.

Don’t Get Lost in the Holiday Magic!

December is arguably one of the busiest months of the year; a whirlwind of a month marked by the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Houses are adorned with bright lights and elaborate decorations. Shops come alive with cheerful holiday music, drawing you in to find that perfect gift. Online shopping retailers ramp up their promotional efforts to get you to spend money. Festive gatherings fill your social calendars, bringing families, friends, and co-workers together to celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, and gear up to welcome the new year!

What we’re thinking small change Wings of Gratitude

Arriving just a few days after Thanksgiving, December doesn’t give you much time to prepare for the merrymaking. Even though you welcome the month’s festivities, the holiday stress associated with societal and personal expectations can be outright demanding. If you aren’t careful, it can cause you to abandon your essential Self-Care practices.

But remember that neglecting your daily wellness routine can have lasting effects long after December ends. And please don’t be misguided by thinking that a gift certificate to a luxurious health spa (you know - the one you received as a thoughtful Christmas present from someone who knew you would likely be overwhelmed) will compensate for the neglect. It will not.

Be grateful for the gift, but here’s the bottom line: Your Self-Care is your Healthcare. Your Self-Care is the activities you incorporate into your daily routine, and those activities are what keep you well, not an occasional trip to a spa! Count the spa as a bonus!

I’ve had my share of overwhelmed Decembers, but when you learn better, you do better. Gratitude has taught me to stick to my daily wellness practices so that I can take my time and fully engage in the holiday activities of my choosing. So here are 10 healthy reasons to maintain your Self-Care practices and not miss out on December’s holiday magic:

1. Self-Care helps you recharge and avoid burnout.

2. Self-Care enhances Joy -Putting yourself first allows you to fully enjoy the holiday festivities.

3. Self-Care can help manage stress levels effectively.

4. Self-Care prioritizes your well-being through proper nutrition, exercise, and rest.

5. Self-Care enhances relationships - when you take care of yourself, you’re more patient with others.

6. Self-Care encourages mindfulness - you appreciate the holiday moments rather than rush through them.

7. Self-Care cultivates Gratitude – it deepens your appreciation for yourself and others.

8. Self-Care encourages Creativity - a well-rested mind is more open to creative ideas, making activities like decorating, gift-giving, or cooking more enjoyable.

9. Self-Care sets a positive example and inspires others to do the same.

10. Self-Care creates a healthy balance in your mental, emotional, physical, social, spiritual, and financial well-being. You see, even though we were poor and may have come from broken homes, we didn’t come from broken families. Our family was our community.

Any old man or woman could tell us what to do. One favorite quote to us was, “You’re smelling yourself.” We now have a whole generation of insanity.

Unless the churches do something about it, we’re going to have to lock our doors, lock our windows and give them our cars if we don’t want them to break the windows out.

The churches must give them some help because they’re not getting it anywhere else. So the help should come from the people already helped, the church folks.

Memphis police use excessive force and discriminate against Black people, Justice Department finds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis Police Department uses excessive force and discriminates against Black people, according to the findings of a U.S. Department of Justice investigation launched after the beating death of Tyre Nichols after a traffic stop in 2023. A report released Wednesday marked the conclusion of the investigation that began six months after Nichols was kicked, punched and hit with a police baton as five officers tried to arrest him after he fled a traffic stop. The report says that “Memphis police officers regularly violate the rights of the people they are sworn to serve. The people of Memphis deserve a police department and city that protects their civil and constitutional rights, garners trust and keeps them safe,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said in an emailed statement.

Repurpose Stacks of Old Magazines to Create New Vision Boards for 2025

Over the weekend, I came across a photo of one of my old vision boards. That old picture of my vision board as well as my growing stack of magazines serves as my friendly reminder that it’s time for me to start working on a new vision board for 2025. That old poster I made highlighted some of my goals, dream travel plans, and words of inspiration for 2019 that are ironically still very relevant today. How symbolic that the old vision board that I saved was from a vision board workshop that I attended at the Jackson-Madison County Library.

No one knew until the pandemic hit in 2020 that 2019 would be referred to as the pre-COVID year. (Does anyone else remember the virtual vision board invitations that were sent out during COVID?) Surrounded by stacks of old magazines, poster board, glue sticks, and scissors, I was drawn to images and encouraging words that perfectly captured what I hoped a successful future ahead would look like. (And for the record, 2019 turned out to be a very purpose-filled and transformative year for me personally and professionally.) In 2019, I met two very influential Christian women leaders at the same event in Atlanta. I was blessed to meet my favorite podcaster, Patrice Washington, as well as my favorite reinvention strategist and devotional author, Marshawn Evans Daniels. I had the opportunity to show Patrice the picture of my vision board that was so representative of the purpose-filled content that she shares on her podcast. I also pointed out that the photo of the woman on my poster board looked like she could’ve been Patrice’s twin. It was such a stunning observation because I included all those things on my poster board several months before I would happen to hear the podcast episode where I first started following Patrice.

I even know people who created vision boards for their successful marriage, family, and careers and posted them in their prayer closets in their homes. I’m all for that. (And if anyone wants to see the true power of prayer closets, watch the 2015 movie, “War Room.”)

I placed several general references to faith on my poster and I even included the specific descriptive words of a Proverbs woman on my vision board. It turns out that the very act of creating a vision board lines up with biblical scripture.

Several Christian-based vision board gatherings often quote from the following scripture in the Bible found in Habakkuk 2:2 that says, “And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.”

In the Bible, in Philippians 4:8, it also says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.”

Hands down, reading the Bible is the best way that I can think of to find daily encouragement. The additional hands-on activity of creating a vision board is another positive and

creative outlet that helps me focus on my goals for the year ahead. I plan to be intentional, prayerful, and very specific about the scriptures and the goals that I add on my vision board for 2025.

Wendy also formerly worked as a features reporter at The Jackson Sun. She received her bachelor’s degree in print journalism from Clark Atlanta University. She is an active volunteer with several community organizations.

The Jackson TN National Action Network Chapter celebrated quite a week of activities in the Hub City last week.

Members of the Board of Directors, under leadership of President Sabrina Parker, held a ZOOM meeting on December 3. That meeting highlighted organizational procedures and protocol.
