JACKSON POLICE DEPT GIVES AWARDS

Early voting numbers for the City of Jackson’s run off race for City Mayor indicate a 60% increase in voter turnout through Saturday with 3,915 early votes as early voting will continue through June 8. Jackson Election Day is June 13.

The first 9 days of early voting has showed an increase of 60% over May city election returns. Local voters and interested campaign workers indicate the recent spark in interest in the Mayors race may have been sparked during a local radio show exchange between current Mayor Scott Conger and challenger Ray Condray. According to WNWS 101.5 radio show “Everybody Talks” with Seabass.

You have heard fishermen say maybe you are not holding your mouth right or something is causing you not to catch fish. However, on this day Shaq Forrest must have been holding his mouth right along with everything else. There is no better feeling than being able to catch bass in numbers that would equal that of bream fishing. It is so much fun when bass after bass keeps hitting your lures and all you have to do is continue fishing and setting the hook. That is exactly what happened for Shaq on this fishing trip. He had a big smile on his face that remained long after he finished fishing that day. Basketball players shoot three-pointers, football players run touchdowns and golfers get a hole in one

on occasions, but on this trip I would say Shaq got a slam dunk. Congrats on what had to be an exciting fishing trip.

Jackson Tn Boom Dominate The Game

The Jackson, TN Boom produced a stunning comeback to beat Zala FFF in a thrilling Group G match in The Soccer Tournament. Trailing 3-0 at half-time, the Boom fought back to score four goals in the second half and secure a memorable victory. Zala FFF started the match strongly, with three goals in the first half, but the Boom refused to give up. The team came out firing in the second half, with a goal from striker Garett Blume, and forward Briamst Castro. The Boom continued to press forward, and Blume scored again to bring the score to 3-2. The momentum was with the Boom, and they continued to dominate the game. Midfielder Garett Blume scored again to level the score, and the Boom completed their comeback with a goal from player/ coach Corey Adamson.

“We’re delighted with the victory today,” said Adamson. “The team showed great character and fighting spirit to come back from three goals down. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players, and we’re looking forward to building on this result in our next game.”

The Jackson, TN Boom will face off against Sneaky Fox in their next Group G match. The game is scheduled for tomorrow, June 2 at 12:25 pm central time.

Work and Worry Will Kill a Mule

“Hard work ain’t never hurt nobody, but work and worry will kill a mule” was one of my mother’s choice phrases that I heard when we kids got out of line. There were 10 of us so I heard it a lot. Her bottom line was that she was not going to allow us to worry her to death with our foolishness.

The responsibility of raising ten children is unimaginable to me. But the burden of doing it alone results in overwhelming stress, regardless of how strong you think you are. Over time, it wears you down physically and/or mentally. For Mama, it was a heart attack in her early forties. Thank God she survived it. Otherwise, my younger siblings would have become orphans.

When it comes to human behavior, there’s a big difference between knowing and doing. Most of us know what’s best when it comes to smoking, but not everyone can do better by abstaining. The surgeon who goes outside to smoke after removing a patient’s diseased lungs knows better, but, at the time, can’t do better. Regardless of the circumstances, we all do the best we can.

Mama knew better. But when it came to doing better, which meant managing stress, she did the best she could at the time. Her focus was keeping a roof over our heads and making ends meet. She worked two full-time jobs, one inside the home and the other doing domestic work outside the home. Some days I would hear her say that she was so tired that she could barely put one foot in front of the other, but she kept going. It wasn’t until after the heart attack, followed by a diagnosis of diabetes that she learned of some things she could do to keep stress and worry at bay. And then she did them.

There is no such thing as living a stress-free life. Only the dead can do that. But the longer you ignore stress, the more it silently wreaks havoc on your well-being, affecting every organ and every system in your body. In his classic book, The Stress of Life, Austrian physician Hans Selye defines stress as the body’s nonspecific response to any demand. His extensive research posits that life is largely an adaptation to the stresses and strains of everyday existence (both good and bad), and our ability to keep what he called distress at a minimum is the secret to health and happiness. Selye described the physiological changes the body experiences in response to stress as General Adaption Syndrome (GAS), which occurs in three stages.

The first stage is the Alarm Reaction Stage which immediately kicks in when stress occurs for the first time. To better understand this stage, imagine suddenly being attacked by a vicious animal. Your pupils dilate, your

blood pressure and heart rate increase, you breathe faster, and your muscles are tenser as your body prepares you to either outrun your attacker or stand there and fight for your life. This stage is often referred to as the “fight or flight” response to stress, and unfortunately you can only fight or run from your attacker for a short time before moving on to the second stage, the Resistance Stage.

In the Resistance Stage your body attempts to repair itself. No longer under attack, your blood pressure and heart rate return to normal. Your muscles are relaxed, and you breathe a sigh of relief. This is the critical stage where ideally you’ve learned your lesson and start to adopt stress management behaviors such as avoiding situations that place you at high risk of being attacked. If not, the body moves to the third and final stage, the Exhaustion stage. This is the stage where if left unchecked, you wind up in a clinic or hospital.

In the Exhaustion Stage stress begins to manage you. It drains your physical, emotional, and mental resources to the point that your body never receives a clear signal to return to normal functioning, leaving it no choice but to do what it can to protect you. So it continues to secrete extra hormones; your blood pressure and heart rate remain high. It becomes harder for you to relax. You find yourself experiencing changes in sleeping, eating, and bowel habits, to name a couple. Left unchecked, you eventually wind up seeing a healthcare provider.

That the body is uniquely designed to repair itself is nothing short of miraculous. Like a complex computer that operates using hardware and software, the body’s organs and systems keep it functioning properly. But the sad reality is that higher-level functioning humans do a poor job of helping the body perform at optimal levels. Some of us may treat our computers better than our bodies. For example, when the energy level is low on our hand-held computers, we quickly find a charging station. But when the energy drops in our bodies, we often ignore the warning signs. As a result, we forget that we are not invincible and instead keep going and going and going until exhaustion sets in.

Exhaustion resulted in a heart attack for my mother in her forties. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it’s the leading cause of death in women and can affect us at any age. Over 60 million women (44%) in the United States are living with some form of heart disease. Exhausted women are also plagued with high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, strokes, autoimmune diseases, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), depression, and anxiety and I am convinced that prolonged stress is the culprit. in most, if not all conditions. I’m also convinced that you avoid becoming a statistic when you learn to manage stress. If you pay closer attention to your body’s warning signs, you significantly lower your risks of being diagnosed with a chronic condition. If you’ve already been diagnosed with a chronic illness, it’s not too late to make lifestyle changes. It’s what my mother did, and I am grateful that they kept her around for 30-plus additional years.

Maybe we humans could learn from mules. They are a hybrid male donkey/female horse cross best known for their strength and stamina. In countries from North Africa to Southeast Asia, mules pull carts to market, carry people across rough terrain, and help their owners till the soil. Able to cross rugged terrain that other forms of transport can’t reach, they have been used in combat. In the 1980s, the US military used over 10,000 mules to carry weapons and supplies through Afghanistan. Another phrase I heard growing up is “he was as stubborn as a mule;” a phrase most often used with negative implications. But those who understand mules would caution you not to be fooled. The animals are highly intelligent, and their stubbornness means they are more cautious and aware of impending danger. In simple terms, they know when to shut down. Sounds pretty smart to me. So when it comes to health, make the small change: work hard to manage stress and when it comes to worry, be as stubborn as a mule.

GRIOT COLLECTIVE POETRY WORKSHOP CHALLENGES WRITERS TO EXPLORE SELF

Thirteen of the most serious African American poets from the Jackson area took seats at the unity table inside ComeUnity Cafe for what they hoped to be a morning filled with inspiration. The occasion was the final poetry workshop of the year for The Griot Collective of West Tennessee, which is highlighted by the organization’s Visiting Writers Series.

“This is our Visiting writers series sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission.

This year’s workshop was led by acclaimed poet, Jacquline Trimble.

Jacqueline Allen Trimble lives and writes in Montgomery, Alabama, where she is professor of English and the chairperson of Languages and Literatures at Alabama State University. Her work has appeared in various journals including Poetry Magazine, The Offing, the Louisville Review, and Poet Lore. Her poetry collection, American Happiness, is published by NewSouth Books. The ironically titled book examines America’s refusal to grapple with hard truths, preferring instead the pretense that everyone and everything is just fine.

“Jacqueline Trimble is a poet in the turdition of Sonya Chanze, Nikki Geovante and Marie Evans,” said Griot Collective President James E. Cherry, in his introduction of the poet. “She is a fierce defender of African American culture and history.”

Before a public reading from her collection of poetry entitled “American Happiness” which was named a poetry finalist and the Best Book of 2016 by the newly launched Seven Sisters Book Awards and won the 2016 Balcones Poetry Prize, Trimble conducted the workshop.

“I am so happy to see so many practicing writers here this morning,” said Trimble in her greeting to the group.

“James Cherry is famous and he’s still a practicing writer. We all are.”

She began by asking those present to introduce themselves and tell what they expected to gain from the workshop.

Tammy Cherry, in her introduction said “I like to write about my passions and I hope to gain more knowledge about how to do it more effectively.”

Griot member and author of more than a dozen self published books of poetry, Taomi Ray said she was there to “network and continue to grow as a writer.”

Trimble opened the workshop by distributing handheld, round mirrors to the workshop participants, instructing each to take two minutes to explore the features of their face. “How much time do you spend looking at yourself?,” asked the educator by profession.

“I want you to look into that mirror and then take ten minutes and just write -nonstop- about what you saw,” Trimble intructed.

At the conclusion of the exercise, several poets presented their renderings to The Collective.

Anna-Alicia Sails, who admitted in her introduction that she was prone to suffer writer’s block, wrote a moving piece entitled, “My Father’s Eyes” which prompted Trimble to declare the poet had been cured. Cont’d P. 24

INVESTIGATION INTO FENTANYL SALES IN LEXINGTON LEADS TO INDICTMENT, ARREST

LEXINGTON – An ongoing joint investigation by special agents with the Drug Investigation Division of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in the indictment and arrest of a man from Lexington connected to the sale of fentanyl.

In October of 2022, as agents and investigators worked proactively to target illicit drug sales in Henderson County, three controlled purchases of fentanyl were made at a residence in the 70 block of Brown Street in Lexington. As a result of the covert purchases, on June 1st, TBI presented evidence to a Henderson County Grand Jury, who returned indictments charging Decota Harmon with three counts of Sale and Delivery of Schedule II (Fentanyl).

Today, officers with the Lexington Police Department made a traffic stop and arrested Harmon (DOB: 1/23/86). He was booked into the Henderson County Jail and is being held without bond.

DAR to Install and Dedicate Field of Flags in downtown Jackson

The Jackson-Madison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) will dedicate their 17th annual Field of Flags on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Triangle Park in downtown Jackson in observance of Flag Day, June 14th. The public is invited to attend this ceremony and to view the “Betsy Ross” flags representing Revolutionary War ancestors of Madison County residents. Due to the outdoor setting, please bring your own lawn chair.

The Field of Flags will be installed on the “Triangle,” where Airways Blvd, Main Street and Lafayette Street converge, on Saturday, June 10, 2023 and will remain until Saturday, July 8, 2023. The display will be in place for Flag Day on June 14, and for Independence Day on July 4.

Special guests for the dedication include City of Jackson Mayor Scott Conger and Madison County Mayor AJ Massey. The names of all Revolutionary War patriots honored by flags on the Field will be read.

The 176 flags are flown in honor of the Revolutionary War ancestors of Jackson and Madison County. Madison County was the final home to at least 17 Revolutionary War patriots. These men and all other Revolutionary War Patriots who fought and sacrificed for our nation’s freedom will be honored with Our Field of Flags.

Lamont Ingram was awarded the Most Outstanding Referee for the 100th Annual National Golden Gloves and Olympic Trails Qualifier for the year 2023. That’s the top referee in the country. He also was awarded the Most Outstanding Referee Award for the 2019 National Junior Olympic Championships. Currently ranked number six (6) in the USA out of 20,000 officials. “My coach was Rayford Collins ‘RIP’ and I fought for the Jackson Boxing Club from 19942004 when I turned professional. Former boxing prospect Lamont Ingram has survived hell on earth, which included him losing virtually everything in his life, and now he’s giving back to at-risk youths in Jackson, Tennessee.

Last month, Ingram was selected Most Outstanding Referee of USA Boxing’s 2019 National Junior Olympics.

Ingram’s recovery is nothing short of incredible, especially considering he went from being an outstanding amateur boxer, who competed successfully in national amateur tournaments, to homelessness, blindness in both eyes, two failed suicide attempts and, unfortunately, much more despair.

“I am no longer ashamed of what I went through because it made me the man I am today,” the 38-year-old Ingram said. “My life had been so hard that I was ashamed to talk about it for so long. I now understand that my struggles are my testimony for the next person to see that he or she can make it if they keep trying.

“Boxing is all I knew, but I couldn’t see out of one eye (cornea injury) that developed at the age of 19. I got mad at God and wanted to retire. I got depressed and didn’t understand why this had happened. In 2008, I became homeless the first time with nowhere to go. I lost everything, including my family, and then went (legally) blind in the other eye. Then, God told me to work with children, and I also opened the non-profit halfway house.

“Boxing taught me how to never give up no matter how hard it gets. In 2013, I lost everything for the second time: my business, my family, everything…..and I went homeless again. But I never gave up! The following year, when everyone said it was over for me, God gave me everything back times two. I lost the building I was in, but eventually I found another building. I had no money and I lost that building in 2013. God gave it back to me in 2016, when the man who bought it, gave it back to me. Now, I have the only two Federal and State halfway houses in Tennessee for special and general populations with more than 50 beds. I’m mostly

at capacity all the time with men who have done 50 years calendar down to those who have done five years.”

Ingram operates the Second Chance “New Beginning” Halfway House and Homeless Shelter, as well as the Team Ingram Boxing & Mentoring Program.

Lamont started boxing when he was 14, because he used to be severely bullied to the point of having his head smashed into a brick wall, thrown into a garbage can, and jumped on repeatedly by others. Ingram’s mother sent him to a boxing coach, Rayford Collins, which turned out to be arguably the most life-changing moments of his life.

“I liked boxing,” Lamont remembered. “I wasn’t the best boxer, but I did beat some good boxers. I was a very determined young man, though. I was 58-10 with 35 knockouts as an amateur boxer. I got my special education high school diploma and later I graduated from Kaplan University with a 3.7 GPA in Business and Chemical Dependency.

“Most kids (in the boxing program) can’t afford the fee to our summer camp or boxing program going on right now. We give them a free breakfast and lunch. I really enjoy this, but I would have never thought that I’d be doing what I’m doing.”

Team Ingram Boxing Club & Mentoring Program was founded in 2017, after Ingram’s long battle associated with him not wanting anything to do with boxing, because he believed God had done him wrong for taking away from what he loved to do and was good at, boxing. When his amateur coach, Collins, died in 2016, Lamont decided to take a larger role at the gym, to the point he was there every day.

“For some reason I wanted to be part of it and help like my coach had helped save my life,” Ingram explained. “Boxing helped me. My coach was very firm, strict and very

Following several other writing exercises,the group took a break for lunch. Amy Crenshaw, owner of the ComeUnity Cafe had prepared a spread which included a variety of tasty wraps and salads.

At the conclusion of her reading, Trimble signed copies of her book and chatted with participants.

COMING EVENT:

On October 6th and 7th the Griot Collective will present “The Jazz of Poetry.” The two day event will kick off with a poetry symposium featuring Ashley Jones, Poet Laureate of Alabama, Mona Lisa Savoy, Poet Laureate of Louisiannaa, Author and Ole Miss Professor Derrick Correll, and Major Jackson, a professor of Literature at Vanderbilt University.

“They will be on October the 6th on the campus of Lane College and the discussion will be “Black Poets Speak” A Conversation of Craft and Culture,” said Cherry. “The following day at the Ned, they will give a reading of their work and in-between the reading will be live jazz music.”

The headliner of that event will be Saxophonist Gregory Tardy and his quartet.
