Backgrounder – Multicultural Student Affairs About MSA
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs provides services and resources that support the academic mission of the University of Miami. We provide a supportive environment where individual growth and cultural expression is encouraged and academic excellence expected. Each student has embarked on a journey to become better educated citizens. We encourage them to take educational risks and sharpen their academic skills by becoming high achievers. This is a place where, through their efforts and commitment, their academic and professional dreams can come true. Opportunities for involvement abound at the University of Miami and each semester is filled with new experiences of discovery and growth. We encourage them to develop positive relationships with their professors, become involved in campus life and student organizations, and enjoy the UM athletics.
Our Mission
The mission of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) is to provide leadership and advocacy for underrepresented and ethnically diverse students at the University of Miami. The office provides direction in developing programs and services that enhance the retention and successful matriculation of students, while supporting their personal and academic development. In addition, MSA supports the university in its ongoing efforts to maintain a multicultural campus community, which supports, values, and celebrates its diversity.
MSA Programs
MSA strives to coordinate services and programs that challenge, motivate, and support ethnically diverse students in their development at the University of Miami. We also seek to bring issues of diversity and multiculturalism to the foreground of campus conversation by sponsoring programs that celebrate cultural differences and highlight similarities that connect us to each other. We hope to engage in dialogue regarding issues of personal and collective notions of race, ethnicity, and culture; while providing a safe and supportive environment for students to freely share their thoughts. Our office collaborates with several academic units, university departments and key student organizations and we look forward to working with others to help students at the University of Miami diversify their collegiate experience.

Backgrounder – Diversity Week About Diversity Week
Diversity Week at the University of Miami celebrates the unique and varied cultures of the university community. Programs and events are developed in an effort to promote cultural and diversity awareness, foster leadership and skill development, educate students on issues of multiculturalism and inclusion, enrich the campus environment, and enhance the sense of community.
Our Mission
Diversity enriches the educational experience – we learn from those whose experiences, beliefs, and perspectives are different from our own, and these lessons can be taught best in a richly diverse intellectual and social environment like at the University of Miami. In the Universitie’s efforts to promote personal growth and a healthy society we celebrate diversity everyday but more specifically once a year in the Fall. We want our students to challenge stereotyped preconceptions and encourage critical thinking.
Diversity Leadership Retreat
The Diversity Leadership Retreat will provide students the opportunity to discuss diversity, social justice, leadership, and so much more. Participants will be inspired and equipped with strategies for success, lessons on leadership, and practical skills that will be helpful in navigating our global society. Workshop topics include: Diversity in the Community, Oppression and Cultural Conformity, Politically Incorrect, Leadership in a Global Environment, Symbols Used to Define Who You Are, Inclusion for LGBTQA Communities, and Effective Communication in Leadership. This event will feature Rev. Dr. Jaime Washington, President and Founder of the Washington Consulting Group, a Multicultural Organizational Development Firm and James Brown, Co-President of ALFA World Wide, Ltd. and a former Senior Vice President at ESPN.
Diversity Week Programs
Programs are geared to allow students to share with the University of Miami community how their diversity has shaped their personal identity. The programs bring awerness, knowledge and skills needed in order ot benefit their personal and professional life.
Organizers of Diversity Week
The UNITY Roundtable was developed in order to bring together student leaders from cultural groups that the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) works with. Meetings are held every month and provide an opportunity for students to discuss issues relevant to the multicultural community. Some of the topics include: calendar planning, collaborative programming, support and guidance for multicultural student organizations, leadership development training, and sharing of knowledge and resources. For additional information on the UNITY Roundtable, please contact MSA at multicultural.studentaffairs@miami.edu.
Backgrounder – common ground. About common ground.
“common ground.” is a joint initiative between the University of Miami and the University of Ottawa to foster good community relations in multicultural societies through public relations education, research, programming and communication in general. Dr. Donn Tilson of UM and Dr. Isaac NahonSerfaty of UO are international scholars in public relations and, in 2009, began their mission to use communication education to promote a better understanding of diversity through dialogue with a pioneering conference on the topic at the University of Ottawa.
Goal
To position the University of Miami and the University of Ottawa as global leaders in public relations education on diversity and multicultural dialogue by 2015.
Objectives
1. Further expand the University of Miami and University of Ottawa’s collaboration with international scholars and institutions on issues of diversity and communication through research and programming. 2. Advance academic knowledge and curriculum design in the area of public relations and diversity. 3. Contribute to the enhancement of the Public Relations programs in both universities. 4. Collaborate with community partners to organize programming on multicultural dialogue on and off campus.
Colleagues
Donn Tilson holds a Ph.D. from Stirling University in Scotland, the first in Europe to graduate with a doctorate in the field of Public Relations. A member of the Public Relations Society of America’s College of Fellows and past chair of the Professional Interest International Section and national board of governors for the Religion Communicators Council, he has lectured internationally on corporate public relations and religion and communication and published in journals from Europe to Africa to the Americas. His book, Toward the Common Good: Perspectives in International Public Relations (2004), was one of the first works on the subject, and his recent work, Saints, Celebrities and Shrines: The Promotion of Devotion (2012), is a pioneering study of religion and public relations. Isaac Nahon-Serfaty, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication, University of Ottawa, has more than 25 years of experience in health communication, international communication, public relations, and journalism. He is the author of several papers and book chapters about public discourse on health and illness in French, English, and Spanish.
History
The collaboration between the University of Miami and the University of Ottawa started in 2009, with the international workshop on “Cultural Dialogue, Religion and Communication” held in October of that year. Dr. Tilson was named a Fulbright Scholar to the University of Ottawa in 2013 to continue work with UO on multicultural dialogue. Various institutions have expressed an interest in partnering on the initiative, including Harvard University, St. Augustine University (Tanzania), San Martin de Porres University (Peru), the American University in Cairo, University of Glasgow and the Tony Blair Faith Foundation (London).
