Workshop 7: Public building
2013 / Finalist / Couple work
The natural history museum is im planted on the hill, creating a direct connection with its natural environment through a public surface that blends into the mountain and from which the six container volumes of the exhibitions emerge, located “under the earth”, like great excavated rocks.
This public platform is connected to the surrounding layout through trails and descends to the National University, joining the educational and cultural program of the sector.

The circulation is fragmented with the help of the voids that are configured inside and outside the volumes, creating different heights and light entran ces, allowing a more dynamic relationship between the observer and the exhibition, forcing him to observe from different angles.

Bioclimatic Strategies
Natural lighting in the spaces occurs largely thanks to the orientation of the facades and the arrangement of the skylights that allow light access to the most restricted areas.
The spaces where activities of greater visual demand are developed have natural lighting.
The large overhangs generated by the project’s roofs, make the interior spaces have controlled direct solar radiation conditions, which favors both the thermal behavior of the building and the visual comfort of the spaces.

Guidelines are established based on Colombian regulations and international manuals to improve the quality of circu lation areas and thus promote the inclusion of people with some type of mobility restriction.
Through the proper use of materials, it is sought to improve the acoustic conditions in spaces such as the auditorium and the multiple classrooms, evaluating different occupation models, it was possible to identify the surfaces that have the highest absorption coefficient.

UNSOLAR is the proposal presented by the National University of Colombia for the Solar Decathlon Compe tition, which was developed over a year and a half by a multidisciplinary team of students and professionals in architecture, engineering, and construction.

The project seeks to meet the needs of a low-income family from the tropics, made up of three adults and two children.
The architectural design of UNSOLAR is based on the reinterpretation of the patio — cen tral courtyard — a typology of large importance in the Colombian architectural tradition.
The patio is conceived as an articulating void through which the exterior is integrated into the interior of the house, providing constant contact with the sun, air, rain and making this element the heart of the house.
The plant is structured from a 3mt x 3mt grid, forming 9 cubes around the patio: each one responds to a strip or life zone, which determines the character of each space.
The northern strip is intended for the social spaces of the house, including a flexible area for the auto nomous management of the family.
The central strip supports the speci fic service spaces, such as; kitchen, bathrooms, and patio, serving as an integrator of technical systems.
The southern strip houses the private areas that can be integrated or divided according to the needs of the family.
The grid that is arranged on the ground plan is reflected in the facades with a modulation strategy specially designed for the construc tion process of the prototype.
The Compressed Earth Block (BTC), works as the modular element from which the façade module of each cube is resolved, determines the assembly process, and provides in ternal thermal insulation properties.
The master plan is proposed to the southeast of Cali, in the area designated for the Navarro Eco-City macro project, which has generated negative perceptions due to the de terioration of the environment cau sed by agriculture and the pollution derived from the Navarro dump.
Faced with this conflict, a recovery strategy for the degraded natural environment is proposed, before any building intervention, to later urbani ze in stages under the parameters of a compact city model with sustaina ble principles.
On a local scale, a density of 160 dwellings per hectare is developed, replicating the concept of patio or central courtyard on a larger scale, which allows offering convergen ce spaces that include economic, social, and environmental aspects, promoting life in community and environmental awareness
A five-story building with a total of ten apartments —two apartments per level— is proposed as the basic grouping unit. The buildings operate self-sufficiently in terms of energy generation, accessibility, and co llective life, so they can be grouped to respond to different densities or conditions without affecting their dynamics.

The street presents certain conditions rooted in the tradition of its inhabitants; we can see how the front gardens res pond to commercial, family, and meeting dynamics that allow a different and unique appropriation of the territory.
These conditions are integrated into the project, maintaining the ways of inhabiting the community space, and making them part of the intervention, thus respecting the desire of the inhabitants to preserve their front gardens as they are.

Tactical urbanism
2018 / Architect Contractor Edu Hábitat Sabaneta, Colombia
A tactical urban planning proposal is developed to intervene in a problematic and unre solved road intersection in a small area adjacent to a public park — The Four Elements Park. From said theme, the concept of this small-scale spatial improvement is develo ped, which aimed to be very low cost and quickly executed. The proposal is elaborated in the watercolor technique and personalized according to the geometry of the urban mobility elements.
