PERSONAL VIEWPOINT / SUBJECTIVE I define myself as a creative person with rather artistic than technical skills, though I find gladly to face technical matters in architecture and not only. I have the personality of an idealist, fact that brings me both positive and negative aspects in everyday life. First, I am committed to absolute authentic and perfect in details way of doing things that preoccupy me. I am optimistic and I have an immeasurable source of finding reasons to fight for and also to find meaning and good in life and people. Second, this way of idealizing is slowing down sometimes my efficiency in terms of time, but this is a battle of mine that I hope I’m winning more and more everyday. Curiosity is another thing that defines me. Curiosity such as discovering places, cultures, or even philosophical, moral matters. I have a great passion for old things, houses, objects, habits, and memories but I’m also intrigued by the future technology. Along with the architecture, trumpet and opera singing are my great interests, since childhood.

CONTEXT Located in a historical region where the field meets the mountain, the house features the architectural specific characteristics of this area where the population's basic occupation was the cultivation of vineyards. Therefore, the big cellars, full of wine making tools and storage are found in every old house.

A RTI C U L ATI ON Therefore, a way to diminish this obvious articulation was needed while making it more functional.

EA SI N G TH E H I ER A R C H Y A simpler and lighter roof will ease the reading of the volumes hierarcy. Furthermore, in order to reduce the size of the volume closer to the size of the actual interior space a lower roof was required.

CONCEPT Turning the additional volumes into contemporary modern design while restoring carefully the original, creates between them a contrast which puts both of them in value.

INTERVENTION Replacing the conventional roof of the addition with a lighter wooden structure allows old walls to be preserved. Also, the sculptural shape of the new roof creates a more friendly design and better proportions of the volume that fills the courtyard with its presence.

The architecture of the self tries to tell the story of a society that, when turning to a diametrically opposed system of organization, characterized by freedom from every angle of view, storms every means of acquiring the social position that is coveted but forbidden up to that moment. This has meant a process of restratification of the society, a fierce struggle in which it is essential to keep in balance two important factors, the restructuration of class and the construction of status.

If a person’s rank is higher in one dimension than another, than he will seek to emphasize the component that he owns in a grater extent in order to build his desired identity.

Ownership, and especially house ownership, has come after the revolution to represent such key element in the struggle to highlight one’s class affiliation.

By using symbolic goods, especially those regarded as attributes of excellence, there are formed key markers of the class, and the ideal weapon in the strategy of distinction, which is the infinitely diverse art of marking boundaries.

The house is the object chosen by individuals to simulate the welfare and the lifestyle specific to a superior social position.


COMMUNITY & SOCIAL I N V O LV E M E N T C U LT U R A L & S O C I A L C A P I TA L P R I VAT E S TAT E M E N T (PROPERTY AS A KEY ELEMENT OF DISTINCTION)

RESOURCES DISTRIBUTION Low status combined with high level of ownership brings poor management of the property & commodities. Having a mismatch between these two, one of them is emphasized over the other. The urgent need for the self to acquire a new identity has directed all resources to that end. Thus, symbols were created to prove the new position of the self. So the first function of the house is no longer

inhabitancy, but symbolic, a representation of the self as it was imagined and conceived. Since all the effort is directed towards the private, the new residential neighborhoods of the urban sprawl are no more than an accumulation of private spaces that generates between them a kind of space rather residual than public. There is nothing left for the infrastructure or social space.

PUBLIC S PA C E S VS URBAN FOOTPRINT The quality of the global containing spaces trough the variety of functions they accommodate, and the entertainment dose they provide to users makes that the outdoor spaces, markets, parks are less and less used. Thus, social spaces are substantially reduced compared to the increase of the urban footprint.

THE DISTRIBUTION OF S TAT U S A N D I T S M I G R AT I O N O V E R T I M E During the comunist period, the nomenclature occupied the best and the more exclusivist residential areas in the city built by the bourgeoisie of the period before Communism. Instead, the elite of the city and all those inhabitants who, after the fall of communism, have accumulated economic capital have migrated to the outskirts of the city, and especially to the interstitial space between the city and the nearby towns where they have built new houses. So some of the central neighborhoods lost their status in the post-communist period because of their monopolisation by real estate speculators who often are associated with a bad reputation.

D I F F E R E N T S TAT U S LEVELS WITHIN THE SAME LOCALITY There is a pattern for developing the urban sprawl that takes into consideration several factors including the distance to the city center, the distance to the main roads and the distance to certain facilities, factors that generate a sub-categorizing of the new residential areas on different levels of status. Thus in the new residential area surrounding DumbrăviČ›a, we can find at least 3 main categories of status.

Today climate change casts shadow of doubt on our civilisation being so self centred. We are told that the world has been abused by us. By simply exploiting it, we seemingly missed the fact that there is more to it than just being our pantry… However, can ‘Green’ ideology, as we know it, embrace the whole complexity of that conflict? Can eco-city, as we know it (Masdar), be a sufficient solution? Biodiversity explores how both architectural and urban design could facilitate meaningful relationships between humans and other species. We want to look for new intimacy between human beings and nature that we can project today. We want to envision new engagement with natural cycles spreading beyond existing agriculture. We want to design a new city embracing a democracy of people, animals, micro-organisms and minerals. We want to find out what would be the city that animals would love. [The Why Factory]

BOTTOM UP / I M P L E M E N TAT I O N S T R AT E G Y It starts from the surface of the city. We go to the Brico catalog and choose between 2 types, Shelter and Environment. The next step is to combine them according to each biome’s needs, information provided by the Habitat Calculator (II). We stop by the time we reach the exact quantity of energy needed to host each biome.

TOP DOWN / I M P L E M E N TAT I O N S T R AT E G Y It can be explained easily by imagining the city as an environment full of species of animals and plants, altogether with humans. To reach an image of a perfect symbiosis urban-natural, we start from the top. We first choose the biome we would like the city to host. After, we take its Foodweb and calculate the amount of energy it needs. Then we choose Bricos to place on top of the city and calculate how many biomass they produce.

AUDITORIUM 4th YEAR STUDIO Faculty of Timișoara The auditorium was conceived to accommodate between 500 and 700 spectators for a wide range of events typologies, from classical concerts to cultural and social meetings. The project involved joining an old building existing on the site with a new structure.

The concept sought to mix carefully the surfaces of the site, so that the valuable public green space and the urban mobility to be generous to the people.
