CHALLENGE: This project is the result of the collaboration of the Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Interior Design disciplines at Texas Tech University. This required research concerning the existing site and its surroundings, interactive exhibition design, and information regarding the Holocaust artifacts. E. DIAZ | C. RUEDA, M. KNIGHT, T. DO, E. SCHAUER | C. LEMONS, D. VAUGHT
CONCEPT: LOSS OF IDENTITY This museum emphasizes the loss of identity caused by the prejudices and discrimination towards the victims of the Holocaust. This resulted in a loss of selfdom, causing a void in their person. This design focuses on the abrupt changes in direction of the lives of millions and the slow progression of their dehumanization.

CHALLENGE
The Children’s Exhibition features several portraits of children of the Holocaust, located next to a handprint button. When pressed, the button will play the child’s experience into headphones and the corresponding square will light up on the map, showing the journey from their hometown to their ultimate destination. Another interactive exhibit displays Nazi propaganda that was shown to children during World War II to instigate discrimination and prejudice. The children use this information to draw their own posters that encourage unity and tolerance.

CHALLENGE: ELEV. #1 ELEV. #2
Carillon required research concerning precedent retirement homes, the physical limitations of the residents, and the use of pattern and color to encourage wayfinding. The current facility was outdated and lacked the appropriate spaces to meet with visitors, speak with doctors and lawyers, or engage in everyday activities. In addition to the need for a variety of spaces, the nurses’ station prevented their tending to the residents’ needs.
CONCEPT: TREE HOUSE This organic, natural design will be based on the ideas of a child’s tree house by resembling an independent environment that encourages the residents to explore different spaces under proper supervision and assistance.

NURSING STATION PERSPECTIVE N U R S E S’ S T A T I O N C H A L L E N G E The previous nursing station resembled a traditional, L-shaped reception desk. Relatives of residents complained that the nursing station acted as a barrier between the nurses and the residents.

The solution called for a modern desking situation, such as an open office system. This type of desk still offers storage and access to digital records without blocking their connection to the residents.

FIG. J-03: acts in compression due to the weight of the user’s legs while also preventing the chair from rolling back as the user leans into the back of the seat

PIONEER HOTEL: RESIDentIal PROJECT BACKGROUND: LOCATION:
LUBBOCK, TEXAS
PROGRAMS:
REVIT
CHALLENGE: Lubbock is currently trying to revitalize their downtown vicinity, starting with the renovation of the historic Pioneer Hotel. The hotel is scheduled to house 1/2/3 bed condos from levels 4 – 11. Levels 2 – 3 will be leased as office space and Level 1 as retail space. The challenge was to design the building to attract more pedestrian traffic to the downtown area. The downtown area only attracts high traffic to celebrate local art through the First Friday Art Trail.
CONCEPT: MODERN ART–DECO The Pioneer Condos will promote a creative, social lifestyle through its emulation of the art community in the 1920s, paying homage to when the hotel was originally built. The combination of Art Deco architectural details and fabrics will redefine the hotel as an interactive, art-friendly environment.
