Oundle School Church Street Oundle Peterborough PE8 4EE I am delighted to welcome back all young cricketers involved in the London Schools’ Inter-Counties Cricket Festival to Oundle. Oundle School is located in a ‘Town and Gown’ setting in a quintessentially English market town within the county of Northamptonshire. Cricket has been played at the School since 1830 and the Town Cricket Club was founded by schoolteachers and tradesmen as far back as 1826, so it is the oldest cricket club in Northamptonshire. Recently, with MCC Foundation support, a Cricket Hub has been formed, that reaches out to state school pupils and the local cricket club junior players, to ensure that all young cricketers, whether at state or private school, get the same chances to play and practice on the excellent Independent School’s cricket facilities. Oundle School boasts nine match cricket squares, three pavilions, twenty cricket nets and sports fields that go on for ever. These outstanding cricket facilities are at your disposal during this LSCA Festival Week. I hope you all enjoy playing cricket on our grounds, as there are few nicer settings to play and enjoy your cricket than in Oundle, and it is a privilege to have you here.

Welcome London Schools’ Cricket Association Registered charity no: 303325

President: John Barclay (Sussex C.C.C & England)

Welcome everyone to the Festivals. London Schools’ have been running festivals for many years. Our two Festivals for Under 12 and Under 15 players have been running for over 20 years now. This is our second year at Oundle School, and we are very excited to repeat the great experience from last year for all the players taking part. Most of you will only come to the U12 or U15 Festival once, and it is not always possible to play each of the other Counties participating. But it is still a fantastic experience because you will probably be playing Counties you would not normally meet in your fixture list. You will socialise with everyone and hopefully make friends with players from all over the country. This year we are again helping with the training of young umpires, in a scheme supervised by the ECB. Also for the first time this year all matches will be electronically scored by young scorers from the ECB. A big thank you goes to all the regional, county school and county boards for sending sides to the Festival and all the supporting parents, and I wish everyone a very happy time and good weather.

“Keating Chambers is a large set of barristers and Q.C.s based in the heart of London, who work all over the world in courts and arbitrations, mostly in the construction, engineering, energy, procurement and technology sectors. They also act as mediators and adjudicators in these fields. They would like to wish all the teams taking part in the Bedford Festivals all the very best of luck. Have fun and hopefully, good weather.”

INFORMATION FOR PLAYERS, MANAGERS & PARENTS This festival handbook gives you details of your matches and the tournament rules. All the matches are played in the same area, so you will find it easy to keep up with the progress of the other eleven teams. Results sheets appear daily on the notice board outside the main pavilion. Your manager should have copies of these. Oundle School is an independent boarding and day school for boys and girls aged 11–18 years, where fundamental traditions combine with innovative educational thinking. In addition to an established reputation for academic excellence, the School is known for its strengths in music, the arts and sport. This week you will be sharing the grounds and facilities with those who work here and with other resident guests, which include young people attending a language school. We have built up good relations with Oundle School and you are asked to be well mannered and friendly to others while you enjoy your stay here. Our activities are encouraged and supported by the Oundle School community and great interest will be shown in the Festival and your behaviour and conduct during it. School Houses used by the festival sides are also home to Oundle School staff and their families, some of whom have young children. Please respect their privacy by not causing unnecessary noise. Showers and facilities to make hot drinks are available and you have the use of TV / common rooms. Please help us by keeping these areas tidy. Please observe bedtimes set by your manager and note that there is a curfew of 11pm when everyone is expected to be quiet and back in their accommodation, unless an extension has been specifically authorised by the Lettings Department. Cricket facilities are excellent. The all weather nets are available for use throughout the festival. Team managers will be responsible for supervision in the nets and therefore no parents or non-playing children are allowed to play in the nets. No food or drink is to be consumed in the nets themselves and please help us to keep the nets tidy by removing any litter into nearby litter bins. No studded boots are allowed to be worn in the nets. The squares at Oundle school will be covered outside of matches, please observe good practice during practice sessions and avoid any usage outside of these times. Other facilities include the Sports Centre, which has sports halls and a swimming pool. We are allocated times for using the sports halls and swimming pool and these facilities can only be used in these times. You will be told about these during the week. Meal times are arranged to allow us to fit in as much cricket as possible. Breakfast, lunch and supper will be taken in the Dining Halls during intervals in play and are for players and officials only. Please note the timings of your meals and stick to those timings. Smart dress is expected at the evening meal. Drinks and snacks can be purchased from the pavilion during hours of play. Bad weather is always a disappointment. Every effort will be made to get the matches played and when necessary play will be extended into the evening. Should play be abandoned, a programme of activities will be organised by the Festival Manager. However, do not try to use the Recreation Centre or any other facility unless authorised by the Festival Manager, as another group may have booked them. The Festival Presentations take place after play on the last day. Valuables should be left with your team managers. Kit bags can be left in the pavilion overnight. Each County will be allocated a changing room to use for the whole week. No studs or spiked shoes, under any circumstances, are to be worn in the boarding house or any other building (including the all-weather nets). Laundry - please strip your beds on departure and leave the bedding outside your dormitory/room for collection after breakfast. Cars - On arrival please go directly to the boarding house your County has been allocated.

FESTIVAL FORMAT

1.

Teams will play in two pools on a round-robin basis:

Pool A

Pool B

Yorkshire Nottinghamshire CCVG Leicestershire California Bedfordshire Metropolitan Essex London 2.

The winners of Pool A and Pool B shall play off for 1st/2nd position, and similarly for the other positions.

3.

If two teams are level on points, the team to be placed higher in their pool shall be the winner of the match between them. If this cannot be done due to abandoned matches or because three teams have equal points, the following tie-breaker formula shall be used to separate them.

a.) Recalculating points totals by adding bonus points for matches won. b.) The team with the highest runs/wickets average over all their matches. c.) The team with the highest runs/overs average over all their matches. d.) The team with the highest runs aggregate over all their matches. e.) The team taking the most wickets in aggregate in all their completed matches. f.) A tie-breaker bowling competition organised by the tournament organiser. 4.

If the final day is lost the eight positions shall be determined on points gained; 1st and 2nd place being decided between the two pool winners, 3rd and 4th place between the two pool runners-up, and so on. Where two sides have an equal number of points, they shall be separated using the criteria given above.

5.

Points shall be awarded as follows:

WON 15 points: no bonus points TIED 5 points: plus bonus points Bonus points Batting Bowling

6

1 80 runs 2 wkts

2 100 runs 4 wkts

LOST bonus points ABANDONED 0 points 3 4 120 runs 140 runs 6 wkts 8 wkts

5 160 runs all out

In a match which has been reduced in overs below the 80 over total, the batting points may be re-assigned at the organiser’s discretion to reflect this (i.e 60, 80, 100, 120 and 140 in a 60 overs game).

RULES OF PLAY Except as otherwise stated, the MCC Laws of Cricket (2000 Code, 5th Edition 2013) will apply. 1. Playing Conditions

1.1 The pitch shall be 21 yards in length 1.2 The balls used shall weigh 4.75 ounces 1.3 The stumps shall be 27 inches above ground & the wicket 8 inches wide.

2. Duration. Matches shall be of 90 overs duration. The side batting first may not bat for more than 45 overs. Should the first innings be completed in less than 45 overs, the remaining overs shall be allocated to the side batting second. A minimum of 20 overs per side shall constitute a match. No side may declare an innings closed. 3. Hours of Play All matches will commence at 10.30 am except on the final day when it will be 10.00 am & all subsequent timings will be 30 minutes earlier. Provided no time is lost, the first innings will conclude by 1.30 pm. Lunch will be taken at 1.30 pm & will end at 2.30 pm. The second innings will commence at 2.30 pm & conclude at 5.30 pm.The notional over rate will be 17 overs per hour & both sides are expected to adhere to this rate. If the first innings concludes after 1.15 pm, lunch will be taken immediately & last for one hour. If the first innings concludes before 1.15 pm, there will be a 10 minute interval & the second innings will commence after that interval. Lunch will then be taken at 1,45pm & last for 1 hour. 4. Drinks Two intervals for drinks will be taken after 15 & 30 overs of each innings. Each interval will last for not more than 10 minutes. An individual player may be given a drink, either on the boundary edge or at the fall of a wicket, on the field of play providing playing time is not lost. 5. Delayed or Interrupted Matches The first cumulative 30 minutes of play lost shall be ignored before deducting overs. If 30 minutes are lost before or during the first innings, 2 overs shall be deducted (one for each side) for each complete 7 minutes lost. If 30 minutes is lost during the second innings, then one over shall be deducted for each complete 3.5 minutes lost. The side batting second must have the opportunity to bat for at least 20 overs in order to constitute a match. 6. Number of Players Each team shall consist of 13 players & shall be nominated in writing to the umpires before the toss. No more than 11 players may bat or be on the field of play at any one time. There will be no need to nominate which players will bat. Any substitution of a fielder can only take place with the permission of the umpire. That substitute can immediately play a full part on the match. 7. Number of Overs Per Bowler The ECB Fast Bowlers Directives and Fielding Directives will apply. No bowler may bowl more than one fifth of the allotted overs.

7 u12.indd 7

27/07/2015 00:51

RULES OF PLAY CONTINUED 8. Wides Any off-side or leg-side delivery which in the opinion of the umpire does not give the striker a reasonable opportunity to score shall be called & signalled “Wide Ball”. 9. No Ball. 9.1 Double Bounce Deliveries Law 24.7 shall be replaced by: The umpire at the bowler’s end shall call & signal “No Ball” if a ball which he considers is delivered, without having previously touched the bat or person of the striker either (a) bounces more than ONCE or (b) rolls along the ground before it reaches the popping crease. 9.2 Dangerous & Unfair Bowling Law 42.6(b) - Bowling of high full pitched deliveries- shall be amended to read: Any full pitched delivery (regardless of speed) which passes or would have passed above waist height of the striker standing upright at the crease shall be called & signalled “No Ball” In addition, if the high full pitched delivery is not slow, then the bowler’s end umpire will, in addition to calling & signalling “No Ball”, shall adopt the procedures of Law 42.7. If any ball which after pitching passes or would have passed above the shoulder of the striker standing upright at the crease it shall be called & signalled “No Ball” by the bowler’s end umpire. 10. The Result The winning side shall be the one scoring most runs. In the event that the scores are level in a match unaffected by weather, the side losing fewer wickets shall be awarded the match. If the both teams lost the same number of wickets, the match is tied. If, in an interrupted match, the side batting second is unable to receive the number of overs they are entitled, the result shall be determined by calculation of scoring rates. The runs/over average of the whole of the first innings shall be compared with the runs/over average of the second innings at the time the match ended. The revised target becomes the average runs/over of the first innings multiplied by the number of overs received in the second. In these calculations, if a side bowled out before receiving their full allocation of overs, the side shall be deemed to have batted for the full allocation. A partly completed over shall be counted as a full over. 11.

The match umpires’ interpretation of all matters concerning the conduct of play shall be final. The tournament organiser’s ruling on all other matters shall be final.

I have been a supporter of London Schools’ Cricket Association for several years, and I am very pleased that the LSCA Festival at Bedford School is going from strength to strength. It is fantastic that LSCA hosts such an important Festival and attracts Counties from all over England. All the boys taking part have a special time meeting up and enjoying a few good games as well as the social side of a residential event. I wish everyone a successful time and hope for good weather for the week.
