CHERET
THE BEGINNING
1890s
The evolution and development of poster art has always been closely linked to advances in printmaking. Thus although the lithographic process was invented in 1798, it had little impact on posters until the advent of chromolithography.
It wasn’t until Jules Cheret invented his convenient “three stone lithographic process” allowing lithographers to produce a wide spectrum of colors from just three stones - that low-cost color posters at last became a reality.
Known as the “father of the fine art poster,” Cheret also enhanced the aesthetic nature of the poster, endowed it with graceful designs and transformed it into an independent work of art.

FRANCE’S BELLE EPOQUE
1890s
By 1880, Cheret’s new poster art form was attracting a number of other top designers such as Theophile Steinlen, the great Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, and Edouard Vuillard. Their chosen subject matter featured Parisian
night life, notably the theatres, music halls and cabarets of the city. The growing popularity of poster art led to the hosting of a major exhibition in 1884. The poster craze peaked during the decade of the 1890s. Poster artists
were transforming Parisian streets into colorful art galleries, attaining cult status in the process, and causing theatre stars to insist on choosing their own favorite artist to do the poster for their show.

THE RISE OF ART NOVEAU
1894–
Interest in the poster was further enhanced in the 1890s by the emergence of Art Nouveau, a decorative style of art marked by flowing, curvilinear shapes, and drawing inspiration from Byzantine icons,
Pre-Raphaelite romanticism and the Celtic Art Revival movement. Largely reliant upon form, line and color, Art Nouveau proved the ideal poster design, and dominated the Parisian poster scene up until the late 1900s. Along
the way it attracted a host of artists, including: Alphonse Mucha, Georges de Feure, Eugene Grasset, and Albert Guillaume. One of the first Art Nouveau masterpieces was the 1894 Sarah Bernhardt poster by Alphonse Mucha.

POST ART NOVEAU: FRENCH
1900s
Several events led to a decline in the Parisian poster scene during the 1900s. In 1900, Cheret abandoned poster art to concentrate on painting. In 1901, Toulouse-Lautrec died. In 1904, Alphonse Mucha left Paris for America
and then Czechoslovakia. And from 1905 onwards, Art Nouveau gradually lost its creative edge. Then, into this vacuum stepped a young Italian artist called Leonetto Cappiello, who focused on simplicity and impact. He appreciated
the overriding need to create instant visual impact, as exemplified by his 1906 poster designs for Maurin Quina absinthe, and in so doing established a reputation as the father of modern advertising.

“Beggarstaff Brothers” James Pryde and William Nicholson, who focused on far more simple types of design. Other UK post artists, some of whom specialized in producing works for the London Underground rail system, included

POST ART NOVEAU: GERMAN
1900s
German poster design was strongly influenced by Ludwig Hohlwein. Good at eliminating all non-essential graphics, he was noted for his use of shadow versus light, as well as his portrayals of people and animals. Other German post artists
included Paul Schuerich, H.R.Erdt and the great abstractionist Lucian Bernhard. It was Bernhard who initiated the German Plakatstil, or Poster Style. This style was characterized by extreme simplicity, represented by clean lines,
minimal naturalism, flat colors and precise structure, as exemplified by his Sachplakat Poster for Preister matches. This Sachplakat (in English, “object poster) was to become a whole new genre of poster advertising.

WORLD WAR I RECRUITMENT
1914–
World War I meant a new role for the poster: propaganda. Indeed, the war ushered in the biggest advertising campaign to date, critical to the wartime communication needs of every combatant: from raising money,
recruiting soldiers and boosting volunteer efforts, to spurring production and provoking outrage at enemy atrocities. The lessons of brilliant American advertising in WWI posters were not lost on the Bolsheviks, who
turned to poster art to help win their civil war against the Whites. Lenin and his followers proved to be the pioneering masters of modern propaganda, and the poster became a weapon in both hot and cold wars everywhere.

DADAISM
1916–
After World War I, Art Nouveau’s organic inspiration seemed irrelevant in an increasingly industrial society. The new realities were better expressed in the modern art movements of Cubism, Futurism, Dada and Expressionism, all of
which would have a profound influence on graphic design. Dada was the result of a reaction to WWI, artists congregated together in Zurich, Switzerland. Artists decided because life and the war made no sense, why should their art?
Dada’s use of typography and photomontage gave a different standard and flexibility to graphic design.

CONSTRUCTIVISM
1920s
In Russia, the fine arts were rejected as part of a change in political ideology. In the new Communist society art was put to work in the service of the state. Two artistic mediums, movies and posters, were exploited by the state as
the perfect platforms to educate the illiterate masses. Stylistically artists became constructors, assembling images into new compositions and collages. The Stenberg brothers created a series of dramatic posters for the Russian cinema.
Mechanical enlargement was not yet available, so they developed a special hand technique to increase images to poster size. They combined contrasting scale and unusual color application to create dramatic, theatrical impact.

SACHPLAKAT (OBJECT POSTER)
1923–
The Swiss developed an early passion for the Sachplakat, or Object Poster, introduced in Germany by Lucien Bernhard. After World War Two, the Sachplakat reached new heights in Switzerland where the extreme realism
appealed to the Swiss sense of precision. The four most recognized practitioners of the style were Birkhäuser, Stoecklin, Leupin and Brun. In 1923 Otto Baumberger completed a uniquely Swiss variant of the object poster for PKZ. The
poster was a drawing of a life-size coat with wool fibers, silk lining and PKZ label so realistic that most viewers assumed it was a photograph. Aside from the label, the poster had no text.

1924–
Various methods can be used to combine two or more photographs into a single image —several negatives (combination printing) or multiple exposures. The term photomontage came from the German Dada at the end
of WWI, most notably from the work of German expatriate, John Heartfield. Heartfield cut and pasted together parts of different photographs to recreate a new composition, often satirizing Hitler and the Nazi Party. The text was often
quotes from leading Nazis, such as , Heartfield’s “Millions Stand Behind Me” which shows what is really meant by Hitler’s millions.

SWISS INTERNATIONAL STYLE
1945–
During both world wars avant-garde artists fled European countries for neutral Switzerland, concentrating in the cities of Basel and Zürich. Influences from Constructivism, De Stijl and the Bauhaus were incorporated into
a design style that exemplified Swiss neutrality and rationality. It was the graphic equivalent of Modernism, the predominate style of world architecture and design from the 1950s through the 1970s. Totally devoid of
emotion, or national affiliation, this international style was perfectly suited to the increasingly global post-WWII marketplace of poster design.

1950s
In 1954 three graduates of The Cooper Union, Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast, and Ed Sorel joined together to form Push Pin Studios in New York City. All three were gifted illustrators but soon added graphic design to their roster
of skills. The Push Pin look, nothing like the Swiss Style, often remixed historical styles, especially art nouveau, Victorian typography and wood type. Glaser’s famous Dylan poster is a typical stylistic hybrid, “a classical Persian
miniature painting and 20th century collage portrait by Marcel Duchamp.” Humor and wit, as well as strong political statements against racial issues and the Vietnam War, were part of the Push Pin work.

The International Typographic Style began to lose its energy in the 70s and early 80s. Many criticized it for being cold, formal and dogmatic. Wolfgang Weingart led the palace revolt which ushered in today’s predominant graphic
style loosely known as Post-Modern design. Weingart experimented with the offset printing process to produce posters that appeared complex and chaotic, playful and spontaneous-all in stark contrast to his elders’ teachings.
Weingart’s liberation of typography was an important foundation for several new styles, from Memphis and Retro, to the advances now being made in computer graphics.

NEW WAVE
1980s
Weingart’s students, April Greiman and Dan Friedman, brought a wealth of typographic arsenals from Basel and co-opted it into the mainstream of graphic design. From April Greiman’s hybrid imagery to David Carson’s
deconstructive page layouts, anarchy reigned supreme in the nineties. Those were the days for graphic design superstars, whose style many a graphic designer adored and imitated. While no one can give a definitive answer as
to whether these American graphic designers took what Weingart did and brought it to new heights, they certainly managed to make it a huge commercial success for its unique design.
