JOHANN STRAUSS JR.
“I have never had, as my opponents maintain, any desire to question my father’s superior ability. Father died, and I am alone among his sorrowing dear ones. I intend to make myself deserving of some of the favour my father so deservedly won…”
After reading even a superficial biography of Johann Strauss Jr. (1825-1899), one has to admire these kind remarks about his famous composer father, who died in 1849. The old man was, apparently, a bad lot. He tried to prevent his children from entering the music profession and abandoned his wife for another woman. He and his eldest son were also at odds politically.
History, of course, has judged that the son had the nicer personality and the superior ability; for the next 50 years he turned out hundreds of popular waltzes and polkas and 16 operettas, the most famous of which is Die Fledermaus. By dint of his remarkable industry, which from time to time challenged his health, and a gift for writing a good melody, he
made the waltz Vienna’s biggest export since sausage. K.B. Sandved cites one critic who said, “(Strauss) has done more for humanity than 100,000 doctors,”—a hyperbolic statement that is sure to resonate with those who believe in the healing powers of the arts.
The Blue Danube Waltzes
Strauss composed this waltz in 1867; originally the music was set to words, but it’s without text that we know it best. In his book about the Strausses, H. E. Jacob observes, “…(T)he waltz sings of the Danube…Right at the beginning comes the rippling sound generated by the play of the waters on the river-bottom… The swift Danube pouring through the Wachau (valley) towards Vienna has two movements: one is the straightforward flow and the other the waltzing movement of little waves and whirlpools. In narrow and widening circles river and waltz flow onwards” (qtd. in The World of Music). Indeed, one waltz tune after another (those “little waves”) emanates seamlessly from Strauss’s pen, each with its own charming characteristics.
MICHAEL DAUGHERTY
Multiple Grammy Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty has achieved international recognition as one of the 10 most performed American composers of concert music, according to the League of American Orchestras. His orchestral music (recorded by Naxos over the last two decades) has received six Grammy Awards, including Best Contemporary Classical Composition in 2011 for Deus ex Machina for piano and orchestra, and in 2017 for Tales of Hemingway for cello and orchestra. Since

2020, new commissions include orchestral works for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Omaha Symphony, and a concerto for violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, who performed its world premiere with the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center in 2021.
Michael Daugherty was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1954 and is the son of a dance-band drummer and the oldest of five brothers, all professional musicians. As a young man, Daugherty studied composition with many of the preeminent composers of the 20th century including Pierre Boulez at IRCAM in Paris (1979), Jacob Druckman, Earle Brown, Bernard Rands and Roger Reynolds at Yale (1980'82), and György Ligeti in Hamburg (1982'84). Daugherty was also an assistant to jazz arranger Gil Evans in New York from 1980 to 1982. In 1991, Daugherty joined the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance as Professor of Composition, where he is a mentor to many of today’s most talented young composers. He is also a frequent guest of professional
orchestras, festivals, universities and conservatories around the world.
Daugherty’s music is published by Peermusic Classical/Faber Music, Boosey & Hawkes and Michael Daugherty Music. For more information on Michael Daugherty and his music, see his publishers' websites.
Last Dance at the Surf
The following note, edited for length and clarity, is by the composer: One of my favorite road trips in Iowa is a drive to the majestic Surf Ballroom, opened in 1934 and located in the small resort town of Clear Lake, around 140 miles northwest of Cedar Rapids, my boyhood hometown. Many of America’s most famous swing, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll bands have performed at ‘The Surf’ for generations of music lovers.
The Surf is also remembered as the place where young rock ‘n’ roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper gave their last performances of the Winter Dance Party tour on the evening of February 2, 1959. They died hours later in a charter plane crash caused by severe winter weather. This tragedy is often referred to as ‘the day the music died.’ But did it really?
In memory of these three rock ‘n’ roll legends and in celebration of the Surf Ballroom’s being declared a National Historic Landmark in January 2021, I have composed a one-movement dance symphony entitled Last Dance at the Surf.
It starts with woodblocks and pizzicato strings, playing a five-note rhythmic
26 | ALBANY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
MICHAEL DAUGHERTY
groove reminiscent of a Buddy Holly guitar riff. This groove is repeated in various transformations throughout the composition and provides counterpoint to the main theme, a syncopated ascending melody played in unison by the woodwinds. The main theme goes through elaborate rhythmic and timbral developments, followed by a rousing ‘rockabilly’ section.
A second lyrical theme is introduced as a slow dance, with cantabile muted trumpets, woodwinds and violins swooning over hushed lower strings and trombones. The opening theme abruptly returns in a high-energy fugue ‘goin’ faster than a roller coaster’ and then dramatically transforms into a majestic chorale in slow motion. A solo horn cadenza transitions into a final slow dance, kaleidoscopically unraveling the main theme through elaborate counterpoint, punctuated by the sound of sleigh bells.
The first coda is a recapitulation of all the previous themes, unfolding with great fanfare but interrupted by foreboding minor chords, a premonition that destiny is just around the corner. A slow, wistful second coda announces that the last dance has begun. Three final chords resonate: although the dance is over, the music and memories of the Surf Ballroom live on.
To the New World
The following note, edited for length and clarity, is by the composer:
On September 12, 1962, President John F. Kennedy’s famous speech, “We choose to go to the Moon!” launched America’s
race to become the first country to land a human on the Moon. On July 16, 1969, a massive Saturn V rocket propelled the crew of Apollo 11—Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins—from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida into outer space. Like the rocket, which separated in three stages after lift-off, and the spacecraft, which was divided into three modules, my 22-minute composition is in three movements. I have created otherworldly music, evoking the sense of awe and trepidation that the Apollo 11 astronauts must have felt as they traveled to the new world.
“Moonrise,” the first movement, takes its title and inspiration from the 1917 Imagist poem by Hilda Doolittle: “O flight/ Bring her swiftly to our song.” Neil Armstrong, the commander of the Apollo 11 mission crew, played euphonium during his college days and was a lifelong music enthusiast. For his historic trip to the Moon, Armstrong brought along cassette tape recordings of his favorite music, including Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, subtitled “From the New World,” and Les Baxter’s Music Out of the Moon, a mixture of lounge jazz and exotic music featuring a theremin. A favorite instrument of Armstrong, the theremin was a microtonal electronic musical instrument often used in 1950s science fiction film soundtracks. In a tip of the hat to Armstong, I have added a solo euphonium to the brass section and a soprano vocalist, singing and glissing like a theremin. I also interweave musical fragments and chords from the second movement of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 with atmospheric cluster chords and atonal punctuations, performed by the harp, celesta and mallet instruments. On July 20, with only 25 seconds of fuel left, Armstrong
ALBANY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA | 27
landed the “Eagle” lunar module on the Moon’s surface, in an area known as the “Sea of Tranquility.”
The second movement, “One Small Step,” is inspired by Armstrong's memorable words, beamed back to Earth as he became the first human to walk on the surface of the Moon: “That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.” I have rhythmically translated these words into a repeated, syncopated pattern (ostinato) that is first heard in the marimba. To dramatize the unearthly sensation of Armstrong’s moonwalk, this movement features an amplified soprano vocalist singing an eerie wordless melody, accompanied by a waterphone (an inharmonic acoustic percussion instrument that creates sound by bowing a stainless-steel resonator filled with water).
In “Splashdown,” the third and final movement, I celebrate the speedy return of Apollo 11 into the Pacific Ocean on July 24, 1969, in a dance rhythm composed in a recurring musical motif of 11 beats. This motif, first heard in the double basses and cellos, moves at lightning speed through the strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion of the orchestra. I also create polyrhythms by superimposing the 11-beat motif over a four-beat pulse. To heighten suspense, I feature flexatones that create strange glissando effects in the percussion section. A spirited coda brings our celebration of the historic first landing on the Moon and “a giant leap for mankind” to a rousing conclusion. But before the final triumphant chord, the glockenspiel, harp and celesta softly play an ascending scale, as I imagine the three astronauts glancing back at the Moon one last time.
PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 3, “Polish”
This symphony was sketched out and partially scored during the summer of 1875, while Tchaikovsky, 35 and on break from his teaching duties at the Moscow Conservatory, was visiting the estate of a former student (and lover), Vladimir Shilovsky, to whom the symphony is dedicated. He completed the score in August at the home of another friend, and it was premiered in November of 1875. What follows are 10 comments about the symphony, which has not been played in at least 26 years by the ASO.
1. Tchaikovsky: (from a letter to the Sofronov brothers): “I am now composing a new symphony, but am taking it steadily, not spending all my time on it, and taking long walks…Nothing’s changed here…Even the dogs are the same, and they chase after me to go for a walk.”
2. Tchaikovsky: “As far as I can see this symphony presents no particularly successful ideas, but in workmanship it is a step forward. I am satisfied above all with the first movement and the two scherzos (movements two and four).”
3. Musicologist Hugh MacDonald: “Tchaikovsky’s departure from the standard four movements allows us to see the Symphony’s equilibrium from a different angle: the weightiest movement is at the center, the Andante elegiaco, with scherzos either side, and discursive first and last movements to complete the frame with a degree of symmetry. The second movement, the Alla tedesca, is the intruder, but its charm fully justifies
28 | ALBANY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Tchaikovsky’s decision to include it… The movement is a waltz 'in German style' with more than a hint of ballet. Swan Lake was the next work to follow. The finale has a 'tempo di polacca,' which has caused the symphony to be nicknamed the ‘Polish,’ but it is neither German nor Polish, just Russian.”
4. David Brown: “The outer movements do not represent Tchaikovsky at his best, but the middle three movements (and especially the central Andante elegiac) are excellent…”
5. Lansdowne (PA) Symphony program notes: “The second movement is a sunny and easy going ländler with a humorously offbeat melody. (Tedesca being an Italian word for German—the ländler is a German/Austrian folk dance). The movement’s central Trio section is rhythmically precise and robust.”
6. Houston Symphony program notes: “The third movement, marked 'Andante elegiaco' (moderately slow, elegiac), resembles other musical elegies Tchaikovsky wrote with its juxtaposition of despondency and nostalgia. After a brief
introduction, a solo bassoon introduces a desolate melodic idea that wanders from one instrument to another until a lush theme for strings (marked 'molto espressivo' or 'very expressive') emerges.”
7. MacDonald: “One of the oddest features of the Symphony is the spare, halting funeral march at the beginning, suggesting a narrative that might have been in Tchaikovsky’s mind even if he never revealed it. Another is the banality of the second main tune in the finale, especially when it returns in a noisy parade, grandly scored for the full orchestra. The appearance of a fugue in the finale can also sound routine, as if other options had been considered and rejected.”
8. K. B. Sandved: “Tchaikovsky was not particular in his choice of expression, but he had, on the other hand, a rich vein of melody, and when he openly and fully abandoned himself to it, he could swing his melody into breadth and power that sweep away all criticism.”
9. MacDonald: “As the forerunner of such mighty works as the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Symphonies, though, the Third may seem more of an hors d’œuvre than a main entrée. Within two years of its composition Tchaikovsky suffered the unimaginable crisis of his doomed marriage, which, for all the pain it caused, led him to a higher level of maturity as a composer. It marks a dividing line between the first three and the last three symphonies.”
10. Macdonald: “Let the listener be the judge.”
