PUBLISHER’S LETTER | BY VIKKI MORAN
O
ver the years, I have posted several questions in my publish‐ ers’ letter to ponder. Today I ask you, does saying goodbye always have to be sad? I say a firm “No.” This, my friends, will be my last publishers’ letter as I have sold Capital Region Living Magazine. I will remain in the magazine as “The Grateful Traveler,” and as you always have done in the past, travel with me to great locations and properties. So many of you over the years have become my travel friends and have been so kind in your feedback. I have been blown away by how many of you have leaped into travel‐ ing to the locations that I have written about. My time as owner and publisher of the wonderful Capital Region Living Magazine, however, will have come to an end by the time you read this letter. I knew from the day that my husband and I purchased the magazine that I was just the caretaker for a brief period. Capital Region Living will be bigger and better than ever under the direction of the team at Saratoga Living Magazine. I am so impressed with these folks and know in my heart that it will thrive. I have been beyond blessed to work with my CRL team and this, my friends, is where the sadness resides in my soul. I am fighting that sadness because, as I said at the beginning of my letter, I believe all goodbyes are not sad ones. Steve, Teresa, Carole, Tina, Tara, Dani, and Tracy will be in their roles and thriving, I am certain, for years to come bringing CRL into its new day. I am thrilled for their future and know that they will be my family and friends forever! As for me, I am finally retiring. Dan and I will be living happily and traveling. Our family is scattered throughout the south and our son, Greg; daughter‐in‐law, Alison; and grandchildren, Olivia and Jackson; live in Colorado. So as you can see, in addition to my Grateful Traveler work, we have many places to visit the family we love. Now, this issue is certainly not about me, but rather about the businesses who make the Capital Region grow and thrive. The big thinkers and doers, the job generators and the unsung heroes…the independent business owners. I know that I am a bit nostalgic right now, but I want to share how the term, Bestie and the Bestiefest began. I dreamt it! I know it sounds crazy, but I was knee deep in planning the old “Best of” issues and fell asleep. I woke up with a name on my tongue and the “Bestie” issues were born. Later in the day came the second idea of a “BestieFest” to celebrate the winners of the “Bestie” readers’ poll and I am happy to report that we will hosting our fourth annual “BestieFest” at The Century House in Latham later this month. This is a night to shower our “Bestie” winners and finalists with the love and gratitude in our hearts for the work they do. Enjoy this issue, my friends, and know that each issue was created and published in loving devotion to the Capital Region and its residents. I have always signed my letter, Gratefully yours and I have meant it each time I typed it, but now I say… Profoundly grateful and humbly yours, Vikki

he Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804 and has estab‐ lished itself as the leading garden‐ ing charity, with the aim of inspiring passion and excellence in the science, art, and practice of horticulture. The world‐famous RHS Lindley Library holds unique collections of

Clean lines and contemporary style Modern lines are a top interior design trend and it is expanding into outdoor living spaces, offering a seamless visual transition. Contemporary style with clean lines, textures and shapes have taken over more traditional styles, particularly among younger homeown‐ ers. Modular, large‐format pavers embrace this trend and are expected to continue to increase in popularity, with smoother textures gaining traction.
Monochromatic and "greige" tones The contemporary trend also leans toward monochromatic color schemes. Gray continues to be popular, with the growing trend of "greige" ‐ blends of gray and beige tones ‐ poised to take off in 2019. These muted hues blend seamlessly with the land‐ scape, plus they allow homeowners to use strategic pops of color with furniture and flow‐ ers to create customized spaces that reflect their personalities perfectly.
Outdoor kitchens and fire features In an effort to make outdoor spaces an authentic extension of the home, livability is a priority. Remembering all moms
I
once heard a story about a poker game featuring the world’s best writers gathered around a single table. As the cards got cold and their interest waned, one of them suggested they have a writing contest to see which of them was the world’s greatest literary talent. The rules were simple; each man had to come up with the shortest and sad‐ dest story ever written. The shorter and sadder the better. They each sat in silence trying to conjure up a short tale that would tug at the heartstrings and elicit grief, when one of the men grabbed up a napkin from the table, scribbled six simple words and tossed it into the center and said, “Done.” One by one the others read the napkin, and their expressions could‐ n’t hide the sadness in their eyes. They weren’t sad because they lost the bet; they were genuinely heartbroken over the six words they read. The story went as follows, “For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn.” The story implied that someone either had a baby and lost it before the child was even old enough to wear shoes or perhaps the person pur‐ chased the shoes in anticipation of the miracle that was to come but was never able to have a child. Either way, it was indeed heart wrenching. As the legend goes that short six‐word story was written by Ernest Hemingway, which makes sense given some of the other tales he shared with the world. The truth, however, is that sad story was around before Hemingway ever put pen to paper, dating back to a newspaper article around the year 1900. Someone saw an advertisement in the paper offering to sell infant clothes that were never worn. Usually, on this last page of the magazine, I write something fun or uplifting, and I hope by the time you reach the end of this you’ll feel the same way about this one. I open my monthly message with that sad tale about a mother’s loss because we are now in the month of May, where each year, on the second Sunday, we celebrate “moms” in a most special way. We call it “Mother’s Day.” If you’re mom, be you 18 or 108, it is right and good that we set aside one day a year to applaud what you've accomplished; from creat‐ ing a life in the womb, to birth, to 2 a.m. feedings, to walking them to the big yellow bus and letting go of their tiny hand that very first time. I’m not a mom, but I had one, and I've lived with them, and it’s not a job for cowards. And it is true if men had to go through childbirth very few peo‐ ple would ever say, “Let me introduce you to my brother or sister.” One and done would be the reality when it came to having kids if men had to do it. So, acknowledging the deep respect I have for moms, I wanted to take a moment to remind you not everyone gets to be a mom, at least not the way they wanted. There are so many women who can’t conceive or who have suffered through multiple miscarriages and this month is very hard on them. Seeing all those TV commercials celebrating mom and watching women tossing their toddlers in the air can be like a rusty knife to the heart. It’s not that these women aren’t happy for other women who have kids but we can emotionally O.D. on the saccharine sweetness that Hallmark crams down our throats this time of year. I would ask you to look to your own life and your circle of friends and co‐workers and be aware that Mother’s Day can be hard on some women. Not just those who wanted children and never had them but those who did have a child and lost it. It’s not fair for a parent to bury a child and this month is especially hard on those moms.

It can also be a tough time if someone recently lost their mother. Perhaps for years they and their mom had a tradition of shopping for flowers or going out to brunch, and this is the first year “mom” is not with them. Reach out to those people, all of them I’ve mentioned here, and let them know you are thinking of them. You don’t have to be morose, a sim‐ ple, cheerful call to see if they want to go to the movies or walk around the mall just might change a dark day. Especially “Mother’s Day.” One last thought. There are so many ways to be a mom that does‐ n’t involve childbirth. Of course, there is adoption and foster parents, but I've also seen women “mother” a child down the hall or block who is lost and needs guidance. I’ve seen aunts be better mothers to a child than the biological mother is capable of being. And I've seen miracles happen in a child’s life because someone volunteered with Big Brothers and Sisters and took time to care. Have a wonderful May and say thanks to all the moms because lord knows they’ve earned it.
