The Festivals for Freshmen of Donghwa High School The Celebration Concert On March 3rd, Donghwa High School held the celebration concert for freshmen at Joshua Hall. The celebration concert is one which represents pride for Donghwa High School because it is the only place to hold the concert for freshmen in Gyeonggido. The stage was started by the wind orchestra, filling Joshua Hall with the magnificent sound of instruments. Many school clubs also showed off their talent - Hannuri(a Korean traditional percussion band), Dinga Dinga (a rock band), Seongyobu(a missionary club), the string orchestra, Choomsarang(a dance club) and Philgram mission choir. Every stage was so great, but one of them was a little bit more special. It was JJCC who performed on the stage. A member of JJCC graduated from Donghwa High School, so they wanted to visit the school to celebrate freshmens’ admission. Many people congratulated freshmen on their beginnings in Donghwa High School. The concert was not only the formal event but a display of the heart of the school to welcome freshmen of Donghwa High School.
The Vision School Have you ever thought about your vision? From March 6th to 7th, Donghwa High School completed a program of Vision School. The purpose of the Vision School is to help freshmen get their vision and materialize their dream. It gave a good chance to students who had only abstractly thought about their dream. On the first day of vision school, students had a lecture from a professor who wrote the book, Son! Life is Too Short to Have Hesitated Mind, at Joshua Hall. After the lecture, students came back to the classrooms and got a red book with I Have a Dream on the cover. They had various activities, such as: writing a wish list called ‘My story of future, my dream’, magic sentences and mission statements. The next day, students spent time presenting what they had done. They had opportunities to know one another by sharing their future life and future diary! The Vision School was a great chance for freshmen of Donghwa High School to build confidence about their dreams as well as to become close each other.

The Pride of Donghwa Do you remember how many athletes did their best during the Sochi Winter Olympics? Did you know there were two skiers who graduated from Donghwa High School in the Olympic national athlete team? One of them is a competitor in the freestyle half-pipe skiing which is a thrilling sport. They perform technical skills at the top of the slope which is shaped like a cylinder, cut in half, as they are coming and going from both sides of the slope. Now, let's meet the pride of Donghwa, Kwang-Jin Kim who brought glory to Donghwa High School and even to Korea.
When and how did you start skiing? I skied for the first time when I was five years old, and became a national athlete at 17. I have steadily skied just because I am happy with skiing. Before I became a national athlete, there was little financial support from the country, so I had to pay all training fees by myself. Although the condition was severe, I was too happy to quit skiing.
How did you feel about being a national athlete in your field? Of course I was happy to be a member of the national team. On the other hand, I got too much burden especially with the expectations and attention people gave me. Since I was the first athlete of freestyle half-pipe skiing, it gave me very big pressure. I sometimes agonized over whether to quit skiing or not, but for the juniors who will follow the way that I have walked, I tend to ski even more happily.
Did you have any slumps and if so, how did you overcome them? At the Pacific Rim Championship in New Zealand, I was seriously injured. It was painful and I even couldn’t walk. Above all, the fact that I couldn’t exercise, made me so depressed. In 2012, however, at the Olympic for Teenagers, I ranked 8th and was full of drive. By getting through tough times, I realized whatever tough time you have, it is important to steadily do your best even if it's too harsh and makes you think of quitting.
s an alumni of Donghwa High School, and as the first freestyle half-pipe skiier of Korea, A what advice would you like to give to your juniors in school? Always try to be the best. It sounds a bit scary, but the world will never acknowledge your efforts, if you are not the best. To be the best, never forget that you must do your best in every moment.

Have you ever imagined studying in a unique shaped building? Or have you ever known that Donghwa High School has special buildings? If you have been interested in Donghwa High School and if you have watched the new building under construction carefully, you probably recognized that it is a triangular-shaped building. Unlike the normal straight-lined schools, the Triangle School is literally a shape of a triangle. The structure received attention from the U.S.A. because of its shape. Actually, this special Triangle School is a work by Korean architects Eun Jung Na and So Lae Yoo couple from‘Nameless Architecture.’They were enough to catch people’s eyes by ground-breaking structures and creativity. It was designed by reflecting the multiplicate factors like the schoolyard at the north, mountain at the east, and the existing structures at the west. Also, halls and classrooms in the building are located near a garden whose ceiling is open so that we can see the sky in the center of the building. Thus, it can be said that this building is designed for an open educational place which can be accessed from everywhere. These unique ideas made this structure receive the honor of an award in the area of‘2014 AIA New York Design Award’, which
is the best work in the field of architecture by the New York Institute of Architects. Do you know why this creative building is being built? It is because one of the buildings will be demolished because of a danger of collapse. It is called the Snail Building due to its snail shell shape. Many students and teachers in Donghwa High School feel the loss, because it was the first building of Donghwa High School which has 50 years of history. It has been cherished because it is not only close to the school gate and cafeteria, but it is a convenient passage to move to the next building. The Snail Building, however, is supposed to be torn down soon, leaving behind sorrow. As a result, freshmen who used it are now studying in temporary places in Donghwa High School. They will move into the triangle school in the near future even though the date of new building’s completion is not certain yet. Donghwa High School students are looking forward to the completion of this building as much as they feel sorry about the old one. The demolition of the Snail Building and the construction of the Triangle School will be a new leap not only for students and the teachers, but also for Donghwa High School.

The Recovering Retreat for 3 Days Donghwha High School students went on a retreat from April 9th to the 11th and were divided into two groups. The Liberal Arts classes went to Yeongdeok and the Natural Science classes went to Gimje. Do you want to know what happened there?
Yeongdeok Have you ever sailed to Dokdo? How about rescuing a wrecked ship or avoiding a tornado? Maybe you have never done those things. In the National Youth Marine Environment Center(NYMC), Donghwa students made a voyage wearing sailor uniforms and were given positions to work as a crew like a real crew, but it was a simulation. Students who sailed to Dokdo in spite of bad weather said it was an unusual experience, so it was deeply impressing to them. How did ancient people know correct directions on the night sea without a compass? It was the stars that told the right way with their light. Students observed Polaris and realized the ancients’ wisdom. They told that the night sky was romantic and full of stars they had never seen before. Do you know which sea is more salty? The east or the west? The marine quiz had attracted students’attention with knowledge about Dokdo and the marine; something students had no interest in during a usual day. The quiz was comprised of the OX quiz, and media game to find sea animals in music video and anamnestic animation OST. Students said, “it played in groups, so we developed a cooperative spirit. It could also be a motive to pay attention to the marine.”
Gimje Have you ever seen your DNA? Arriving at the National Youth Agriculture and life Center, Donghwa High School students were able to observe their DNA using cells in their mouth. Many students said the class was very meaningful because they could learn a lot of knowledge about DNA and observe real DNA which was seen only in pictures in the textbook. Besides, they participated in various interesting programs such as: operating a helicopter, tractor simulations, observing mutant flies with a microscope, and making eco-friendly pesticides. Do you know you can draw pictures using lights? It is possible if you have a camera. Drawing pictures with lights was started by a well known artist, Pablo Picasso and now it is called 'Light Painting'. In the dark class room, students were divided in some groups and determined what to draw through their discussion. After that, they started drawing something using LED bulbs in the air and the teacher took pictures of them. Some students said it was interesting to draw pictures with light. They said it did not seem possible and they could cultivate cooperation through this program. Next day, all students were carrying out their missions here and there. Missions were some games that made every student participate such as team jump rope, speed game, and carrying a ball using a pipe. Many students said it was really exciting and they will never forget what they gained through the fun games; cooperation and wonderful memories. Gyunghye Nam (2-4)

If someone asks, 'Can you imagine the final

development in technology?', what will your answer be? Probably most of you answer 'no'. As you know, technology continues to develop and it will last forever. Then, do you know what kind of interesting and novel technology has developed recently?
No More Paper: 3D Printer 3D printer, which has appeared frequently in SF movies, makes products according to a blueprint by spraying plastic powders which are liable to melt. Thanks to this amazing printer, people who damaged their facial bones could be healed. Even babies who have suffered from heart disease could be save. Also, it is so useful in many fields that it could exhibit dinosaur fossils by copying them without any damages. However, it is only able to make products whose size is less than 1m. Moreover, the cost of making products is expensive. In addition, it is possible to be abused by criminals, because it can also make dangerous things like guns.
New Wearable Device: Smart Glasses Recently Google, an IT company, launched the first smart glasses called Google Glass. These special glasses are so-called 'crystal of high-tech' as it has GPS, can recognize a human's voice, check SNS, and even today's weather! This new product provides information more conveniently to busy modern people. This makes people excited by giving them freshness and convenience. However, it is controversial about an invasion of privacy caused by face awareness and camera functions.
You Can’t See Me: Invisible Cloak An invisible cloak, which appeared in the movie 'Harry Potter', was an idol to a great deal of contemporary children. Almost everyone may know features of this famous cloak-it makes a person who wears it invisible. Can you believe that you could use it in real life? Of course you CAN! How does it work? It scatters light which makes people believe there is nothing in front of their eyes. This is because of using a 'smart meta material', which becomes slim when it is transshaped. If the researchers progress more, this cloak will be able to be used in various fields; such as national defense. Due to its feature which makes things invisible, however, it could also disturb social order.

Have you ever read cartoons before? At least once, everyone would have read them in daily life. When do you read them? Why do you read them? For spending your spare time? Or just for fun? Differently from the past, cartoons recently became popularized with various medium, so you can read them more easily. There was an exhibition that you could meet many kinds of comics. From January 30th to February 2nd, an international cartoon festival was held in Angoulême, France. The Korean team participated in the festival and had the exhibition named 'I'm the Evidence'. Its theme was ‘Comfort Women’ who were forced to be sexual slaves during Japanese colonial period. This exhibition drew about 17,000 visitors and let many people know the REAL facts and seriousness of Japanese comfort women. The work formed sympathy with readers and included cartoonists' intention to impart affairs into the whole world. Not every comic, however, deals with heavy and difficult themes. There are many comics for fun. Because of the diffusion of the internet and smart phone, today, comics have been a hot media. For example, a lot of people see cartoons on the internet websites, which are called webtoons, and watch various kinds of animations through TV and movie theater screens, without going to the comic book store. Especially, webtoons and animations have lots of enthusiastic fans, which often makes them recreated into TV series and movies. The movie 'Secretly Greatly', of which 69.5 million people have watched, is one of the movies based on a webtoon. Outside of that, 'Moss', '26 Years', 'I Love You', and 'The Neighbor' were also remade into movies from webtoons. While 'Fashion King', and 'Palace' were remade as TV series. Cartoons are also recreated into animations like 'Naruto', and 'One Piece'. These movies have an advantage that the scenario has been assured by the readers. However, many people have already known the summary of the movies, so it could make people less interested in them than other movies. If directors pay attention to the pros and cons, they could make a greater movie. Comics are recreated into many genre and gaining more popularity than before. Also some cartoons try to give messages to readers. Why don’t you try to find out the hidden messages behind the funny story next time?

Different Education System ; Korea vs. Finland Finland is the top country for the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) and Korea follows it. If you check the ranking of PISA, it seems to have little differences between Finland and Korea. However, you are making a great mistake. If you think about Korean education, called ‘hell of the entrance examination’, and Finnish education, called ‘utopia of the education’. Let’s look at the details of Korean education and Finnish education, and think about Korean education’s future directions.
Korean Education Korean Education is focused on only academic aptitude tests. It pursues competition rather than interests or original goals of education. So, regardless of their dream and will, Korean students study many things that schools or academies offer in order to enter a university. This method of education serves a foundation to achieve great outcomes like the secondariness of PISA, an international economy ranked 15th and a powerful nation of IT. As you can see the results, however, this kind of method is not a happy way to students: Korea accounts for the top suicide rate among OECD countries, and ranks 55th in science interest among 57 nations. If they truly care for students, they have to try to make an education that allows students to find their dream and future.
Finnish Education Because of the war in 1945, Finland struggled in poverty. Eventually, Finland become a nation with a powerful education. How is it possible? That’s because Finland offers educational conditions where students are given an opportunity to think about what they’re learning by progressing debate classes. They satisfy three things - responsibility, customized and creative learning - by applying this progress to education. Finnish education has formed a pleasant atmosphere by taking an active part in practical life because they don’t separate the tailender and the top. Also, the assessment is just used to check what they have learned. As a result of all education for their students’ happiness and dreams, they got the first place in PISA. Although the education system of Finland is much more developed than that of Korea, it should not be accepted unconditionally, also we can’t ignore the history of the Korean education system. Without understanding educational philosophy or history of a country, it is impossible to accept merits of the system. If Korean people understand each country and accept its system with control and supplement, the Korean education system will develop in the near future. Hoyeon Choi (1-15)

Believe or Not ; the Mystery of Bermuda B
ermuda has been focused on by many people since the last century. This imaginary triangle area contains the Florida Strait, the Bahamas, the island of the Caribbean sea, and part of the Gulf of Mexico. Many mysterious disappearances of little boats, airplanes, and ships have occurred nearly more than 100 times in the Bermuda Triangle. It is known as a triangle region of the devil or as a tomb of the Atlantic Ocean. Before they disappeared, pilots usually reported that a compass was dancing, flight control was malfunctioning, and a figure, similar to a UFO, went back and forth. They disappeared on the radar and were not seen or heard from again. Also, no wrecks and traces of them have been found. any people have presented a theory about this unusual disappearance in the Bermuda Triangle. First, some of them say it is because of aliens. They say that wicked aliens have hijacked airplanes and ships crossing the Bermuda. Second, there is a theory called the wormhole theory which is insisted on by an Indian philosopher. According to this theory, ships and airplanes from earth sometimes go over to an antimatter world. It also says that ships and airplanes which are approaching Bermuda suddenly disappear because it is Bermuda that connects our world to the antimatter world. Lastly, the methane gas theory is regarded as the most probable theory. Makiber, the American marine geologist, insists that ships and flights which have disappeared in Bermuda are caused by methane gas. Methane catches fire immediately when it is taken out of the ocean. A methane hydrate layer is hidden all over the world and Bermuda also has it. By this principle, Methane
M
goes into flights’ vents and it burns the flight up in the air. Therefore, very few fragments of the planes remain. owever, some people say that all these disappearances are manufactured. First off, traffic volume of this region is so high that aircraft and ships which were wrecked are actually not very related to Bermuda Triangle. Second, this usually happens because of not only Bermuda but also bad weather. Finally, the reports about the disappearances are exaggerated and distorted. One magazine reported the Bermuda Triangle mystery, since then, publishers and broadcasters manipulated it to draw peoples’ attention. hat is the truth of Bermuda? Does a supernatural force effect Bermuda? Can it be explained by the environment such as abnormal shallow water levels and rare weather patterns? Until the research is finished, the secret of Bermuda will remain as a mystery. What do you think about it? Maybe you can be the one to find out the reason.

The Prime Gatecrashers in Spring There are some unwelcomed guests that always bother us in spring when flowers bloom and animals become active. Do you want to prevent those annoying things? Here are some tips for you!
Spring Fever It is not a disease but a physiological phenomenon which is caused by our bodies adapting suddenly to changed temperatures in spring. To prevent it, do regular aerobic exercise at least three to five times a week for 30 minutes to one hour. Also, you need to take in vitamins and minerals in vegetables or fruits to increase metabolism. If you are sleepy even though you followed these precautions, press the deep parts of the back of your ear or temples or take a nap. However, NEVER take caffeine such as coffee or energy drinks.
Yellow Dust Frozen soil melts and creates sand. Sand and wind generate this awful phenomenon called Yellow Dust. Recently “Fine Dust” which is similar to "Yellow Dust" also occurred. This phenomenon is caused by exhaust gas and industrial wastes from overpopulated industrial cities of China such as: Beijing, Shandong and Tianjin. You should be more careful about this new phenomenon because it can always occur and it is hard to prevent. However, it is said that by using masks you can filter 80 percent of the dust and sand. BUT DO NOT reuse used masks or add towels or tissues to it.
Allergic Conjunctivitis An enemy of our precious eyes is caused by dust mites, dandruff or far off pets, and mold. This disease has symptoms like a slimy optic discharge or swollen eye. At this time, it is best never to wear lens or scrub eyes with salt water. You should do basic things like washing your hands. It would be better not to eat processed goods or greasy foods.
Skin Trouble During the day, ultraviolet rays attacks our face with three awful weapons; melisma, freckles, and blemishes, which cause hyperpigmentation and make skin trouble. However, sunblocks, and wearing a sun cap, can defend our skin from these enemies. Eating foods containing Vitamin C like oranges, peppers and strawberries also help you prevent them and a cold caused by a huge daily temperature range. Youngjun Lee (1-6)

Unusual Place, Unusual Memory How is your life? Don't you need something fun? If you do, here are some places – restaurants and hotels managing with unique themes – that make your experiences more special.
China - Fangweng Restaurant If you travel to China, don't miss visiting Fangweng restaurant located in Yichang, Hubei province, China. You can feel lots of thrill here due to the location of the restaurant. It was built in the cave of a steep cliff. Under the cliff, Yangtze river flows. If you have a meal there, you can also enjoy the terrific scenery of the river.
U.K. - Malmaison Oxford Castle Have you ever thought about spending a night in prison? If you want to try it, Malmaison Oxford Castle is the right place. It was used as a prison from the Queen Victoria era until 1996. Because of overcrowding, however, the prison couldn't work as it had done before. In 2006, the prison cells were remodelled, and surprisingly, they became a hotel with high-end facilities and modern interiors. It also runs 24-hour room service, restaurant, laundry service and etc. Austria - Das Park Hotel Here is a hotel only for the guest who doesn't have claustrophobia. Das Park Pipe hotel made by Andreas Strauss is located in Linz, Austria, and each pipe room in the park is surrounded by nature. Unfortunately, there is no bathroom and shower facility, so you have to use public establishments around the park. The most peculiar feature of this hotel is a donation system where guests pay as much as they want.
Finland - Lumilinna Snow castle Hotel If you don't care about the cold, Lumilinna Snow castle hotel, located in Kemi, Finland, is one of the unique hotels you can stay. It is said that a woman who resided in Sweden came up with an idea for building a snow castle. Almost all accommodations such as the theater, chapel, and restaurants are covered with ice and a thick fur blanket is provided on the bed. In addition, annually, the ice hotel is newly rebuilt. Is there anything that caught your eye? If so, how about visiting one of these HOT places for your next journey? Jiyun Kim (1-11)
