On April 23rd, the students of Yongwha Girls’ High School ran a race at Seoul ul Grand Park. Several students from different classes were surveyed and the result was as as the follows: 76% of the students were against the annual Health Race while 24% % of students actually liked it. What is your personal opinion? Do you think it is good d for your health? Here are some of the students’ opinions. Many students were against the annual health race. For example, student A said, “Every year we hold it just few days before the mid-term exam. It breaks the flow of our concentration. So, I don‘t like it. I think studying is more important, since we are students. Our duty is to study, not to run a race. Of course, health is important, but running hard just once a year doesn’t really change our health or physical state and ability.” Student B said, “We have to take a test even at a school event like this. Do you feel happy when taking a test? We can’t enjoy the running itself. We get graded and ranked for running the race, according to the time we entered the finish line. They call it the health race, but I get more frustrated and stressed from running.” Student C said, “Why do we have to run at Seoul Grand Park? Don’t you think it’s too far away? I want to run at Joong-LangCheon.” However some students like running. For example, Student D said, “I have experienced a piece of truth in life: life is difficult, it is always full of challenges. The race was a physical and mental challenge for myself. It was a chance for me to test my limit. It was a rewarding and meaningful experience for me.” Student E said, “I was so happy because I didn’t have to go to school and study that day. It was refreshing for the body and mind.” However, all the students did their best and that is the most important thing. Even though there are different personal opinions about Yonghwa Health Race, it will continue. Therefore, doing your best and thinking positive is better than just sitting there complaining on and on. Kim Yunjin (10107)

The Month of Science in Yonghwa This school year, a variety of commemorative events were prepared for ‘Science Month’ at Yonghwa.

On April 5th, a ‘Science Contest’ was held for students who are taking the science course. In this contest, the first and second graders took a test in the four fields of science: physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science, while the third graders took a test in one of the four fields they had chosen to study.

On April 19th, all the students had a writing and drawing contest. You could choose to write an environmental composition or a book review on Science. If you prefer painting, you could make an environmental poster. Students could participate in one or both of the contests. We also had a competition for making and flying “the lightest flying object” on April 19th. If anyone wanted to take part in the contest, they could participate by making a team of two or more students. This competition consisted of making a lighest flying object and making a free-fall from the school roof. Among the objects that were dropped, the one that took the longest time won. If there was a tie, the team with a better artistic expression got the higher score. In addition, there was a guest speaker for the students taking science courses on April 12th. The lecturer was Professor Kim Yeonsoo and he spoke about ‘Virus in Curing Diseases’. It was a meaningful lecture about his experience, the future and the vision of scientific technology in this field. The lecture helped the students in understanding and choosing their future majors. Getting Ready for University This spring, like any other spring for Yonghwa, our school held briefing sessions for entering top universities in Korea. In the past, these sessions were only for the seniors. However, this year, it was open to all those who wanted to get information about different requirements and qualifications needed to apply for different universities. Many of the students had great interest in Yonsei University. There were so many people that most of them had to stand up during the presentation. Then, On May 25, there was a meeting held by Kyung-Hee University. They gave some prizes to the students who attended the meeting, and because of that, many students were more attentive and had a good impression of the university. The next day, there was a meeting about Hong-Ik University. As everyone knows, this school is well known for its art department. So, many students who were interested in the arts m attended at the Hong-Ik University session. The presenter pr of Hong-Ik gave a deep impression to future students. fu We had more meetings from other universities such as Dongguk, Gunguk, Korea, and Ewha. s Through these meetings, we got to realize that entering university is not that far away for us tim for us to be prepared. and it’s time

[Opinion]

Yonghwa is

Fkdqjlqj$ Y

onghwa is changing. With the high school “choice system” -students having the right to choose which high school to attend- our school is also changing in order to keep in pace with the changes in educational policies and atmosphere. The changes can be found in both the outside and the inside of our school. We don’t know yet whether these changes will have positive influences on the school. Still, it is sure that the school will be very different from how it was and how is now. Let’s first look at the changes that have been made on the outside.

T

he school has built a new gate. Unlike the former one, the new one is huge, red and tall. The gate consists of many small red bricks with the gold Yonghwa mark at the top of it. The building took several months to be completed and all the Yonghwains waited for it to be finished. As the construction dragged on, there were rumors saying that the school was making an automatic gate. Some students said that the construction was taking a long time because of the scarcity of special bricks. Opinions vary on the new big gate. Some say that it makes Yonghwa much better, allowing people to have better image of Yonghwa, while the others say that it is so huge that it does not fit well with other relatively small buildings in the school. Yet, students all seem to agree that the new school gate creates a better facade, especially at night with its lights on.

N

ext, the changes are still going on inside Yonghwa. The school is trying to have classes with students in other countries using video conferencing. Until now, these classes were more of cultural experience for students and forming friendships with students in Australia and Singapore, but it is said that we will someday have a real academic and debate classes through the web cam. Also, the school is working to provide personal connections for students in Yonghwa with students in other countries so that we can learn practical English and about various cultures by making international friends. What’s more, lots of international events are introduced to the students, giving an opportunity to those who are interested in participating. The school is also carrying out GLS(Global Leadership Scholarship) program that intends to grow the leadership of the students through group work and research at a foreign country. All these projects, though not settled yet, are sure to develop the abilities latent within the Yonghwains.

T

he sudden changes in Yonghwa might cause some confusion among the students as well as teachers. Yet, I believe all these changes will, in turn, make Yonghwa a better and more competitive school in the coming years. Joung Jieun (20136)

$6($1 3/86 6800,7 In Dunman High School

From May 31th to June 5th, Yonghwa girl’s high school students (Alan Lee, e, Soyeon Lee, Jongsu Yang, Eun Seo Tak, Hyeon A Kim, Yeeun Park, Seungheee Ryu, Wonkyung Tak, Soohyun Kim, Nakyung Lee, Danah Kim, Dayoung Kim,, Jihyun Yoon, Sangmin Han) went to Dunman High School in Singapore to participate in ASEAN PLUS SUMMIT 2010. This was a model of real ASEAN SUMMIT. We represented Russia and New zealand. Each students had their councils. cils. They were the Social Development Council, the Crime Transitional and Security rity Council, Council, or or tthe he Environmental Council, the Health Development Council, the Science and Technology chnology C Council, ouncil, tthe he E Economic conomic Development Council, and Press Corporal. In every council, we discussed global issues for 2 days. Every delegate had different opinions and complex assertions to argue, however we concluded with reasonable resolutions. On the third day, we participated in Crisis Session, which is an international conference. We dealt with the problem of asylum seekers. One interesting thing during conference was a caucus. There are two types of caucus in there, one is a “moderated caucus”, and another is an “unmoderated caucus”. A caucus is like a break for all delegates to share their opinions. They gave their thoughts and discussed various issues related to different problems. On the last day, all the foreign delegates from India, Brunei, and Korea had a city tour with the Dunman High School students. That night, all participants of ASEAN PLUS SUMMIT 2010 had a dinner party. Lee Alan (20225) Yang Jongsu (20221)

Huiying is 15 years old girl from Nanyang Girls‛ High School. She has a big family. She enjoys listening to K-Pop, hanging out with friends, chatting with friends and so on. We have same interest, so I like talking to her. We exchanged facebook and msn addresses, but we can‛t meet online. I hope we can chat during summer vacation. I‛m looking forward to becoming a good friend with her. Lee Chanhee (10420)

Mingzhen is my penpal friend. She lives in Singapore and we started exchanging e-mail through our schools. She goes to Nanyang Girls‛ High School, and she is really interested in k-pop. She knows many korean songs such as Fire, Gee, Nobody, and so on. Also, she is interested in Korean dramas. She said that recently, she finished watching Korean drama named “You Are Beautiful.” We became very close, so before I went to Singapore to participate in ASEAN PLUS SUMMIT 2010, she had told me about good places to visit in Singapore. Also, we exchanged facebooks, so sometimes we chat through it. It is really nice to talk to Mingzhen, and I hope that we can become closer. Tak Eunseo (10132)

I have a penpal from Nanyang Girls High School in Singapore. Her name is Dominique Yong. She was born in 1995, and is 15 years old. Also, she has one younger sister and many pets. I was so surprised that she can write Korean well. Dominique and I have a lot in common. She likes dogs and so do I. She also likes K-pop. She is really interested in Korean bands. I felt her love for Korea, so I was proud of that. Besides, I will ask her about the culture of Singapore. We still don‛t know much about each other yet, but we will find out about each other steadily by exchanging Facebook IDs or other internet messengers. I hope she will be a good friend of mine and I want to be her good friend. Yang Jongsoo (20221)

My pen pal‛s name is YingYing from Nanyang Girls‛ Highschool in Singapore. She and I are interested in foreign language (I‛m interested in Chinese which is one of official language in Singapore, and Yingying really wants to learn Korean). So, we email using English, Korean, and Chinese. It‛s a great opportunity to practice writing English and to study each other‛s language. I think it‛s killing two birds with one stone, isn‛t it? She is a huge fan of one of the most famous pop singers in Korea, Super Junior. Whenever I receive her email, she always talks about Super Junior. I didn‛t know that the Korean wave is washing over Singapore. It‛ll be a great chance to increase my writing ability, and to make a foreign friend. So, I want to continue this relationship. [Lifestyle]

Do you wanna

Nowadays there are many people who have slim, beautiful bodies. It is always our dream to become like them. Since it’s summer I’m sure everyone wants to be slender, I’ll give you 3 tips on how to make our bodies healthy and slim! First, you should eat BREAKFAST regularly. I think it is the most important thing in a diet. If you don’t have breakfast you may go to the snack bar to fill your hunger before lunchtime. Also it is helpful to your brain so don’t skip your breakfast if you want to succeed in your diet!! Second, MOVE as much as you can. Many people think exercising is good for a diet. Of course it is good, but students like us don’t have time to exercise often. However, when a little movement is accumulated day after day, a great amount of calories are spent. So if your school is walking distance, walk!! Lastly, drink a minimum of 8 glasses of WATER a day. You need to enjoy drinking water as much as you can. Water is really good for your body, exhausting the waste material in your body. Also it can be a substitute for your snack when you are hungry. Do you understand what I said? How about starting right NOW!! I hope you guys succeed! Lee Soyeon (20224)

On March 2nd, there was the 23rd Entrance Ceremony for the newcomers. About 500 freshmen were admitted to Yonghwa. Students were given the opportunity to choose which school they would want to attend. The students looked very excited and curious about their upcoming days in Yonghwa. I hope that they have an unforgettable time in Yonghwa!

On March 26th, there was a devastating accident while the Cheonan Ship was patrolling at night. Suddenly the ship and the men disappeared. Many marines died and were injured. Moreover, nobody knows the exact cause of the accident till today, which makes it one of the biggest mysteries of Korea. There were lots of plausible assumptions from accidental explosion sion on tto North Korea‛s firing.

On a very fine day in Seoul Grand Park, Health Race was held for Yonghwa girls. The course was about 7km! Yet, with lots of things to see, beside the course - lions, tigers, elephants, and lots of trees - students could easily and safely finish the race. Although it was quite tough, health race is sure to refresh Yonghwa girls by providing fresh air and pleasant scenary. c na ce nary ry. ry

Parents‛ Night took place on May 28th. Many parents who were interested in their child‛s school life joined the Parents‛ Night with many other mothers and fathers. Parents were able to experience what their daughters eat by trying out the school lunch. They also had a pleasant time with homeroom teachers. At the end, parents wrote letters to their daughters and hung them on trees so that their daughters can find and read them the next day. Also, this year‛s World Cup has featured some soccer stars like Christiano Ronald, Ki Seongyong, and Lee Cheongyong.

World Cup for women under 20 was held in Germany. Actually, this world cup has not been renowned to the public. But this time, the U20 has issued many women soccer stars, with Korea winning the 3rd place. Especially Ji Soyeon drew the world‛s attention by making the 2nd most goals. Goal keeper, Moon Sori was also issued as a ‘Alzzang Goalkeeper.‛ New supporters have been formed and they say that they like the athletes‛ delicate plays. We all hope for their better plays in the next U20!

As the 2010 South Africa World Cup has heated the air of the Earth, this summer was hotter than in any other years. As we are high school students, we had to attend the summer school for three weeks out of the four-weekbreak. But summer vacation is always a time to improve and a time to rest your body and mind. Hope everyone is fully recharged!
