“ To laugh and love much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a better place, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Below is a student journal based on the culture team.
1
st day Our culture team went to an Art Experience Center to dye handkerchief. There, we experienced natural dyeing, and we experienced the effects and positive aspects of natural dyeing. To dye the handkerchief, we used indigo color which is similar to blue. There are some methods to making the patterns, and we used binding. The shape depends on how you bind the handkerchief with yellow bands. After visiting Art Experience Center, we went to a Folk Village. We watched traditional houses of Jeju island. Jeju’s traditional houses have unique shape because the wind of Jeju is very strong. For example, the houses all tied their roofs with a rope and tied small rocks on it in order to fix the roof from flying off with the wind. Also, the walls of the houses are similar to curtain walls which are good in blocking off the wind, rather than pillar walls which are good in standing the house. As the last course of the day, we experienced horse riding. Jeju island is famous for horses, so horse riding is famous among tourists. Some horses were fast and some horses even pooped while running.
2
nd day On the second day, we experienced Jeju’s traditional fishing. It uses a bamboo fishing rod. An assistant gave all of us shrimp as bait. Many friends caught fish, from small fish to an eel and yellow sea bream. After that, we went to a water park with a sauna and indoor swimming pool. Some visited both of them within 2 hours. The swimming pool was good to play with slides and tubes, and sauna was good to have a conversation with friends eating eggs and drinks. At night, we had a recreation time. Every class showed fantastic dances and singing. Only 3 teams took the prizes but we enjoyed all of the performances and felt all the groups were fantastic.
3
rd day We went to Mara island, which is near Jeju island. Mara island is the South Korea’s southernmost place. It has beautiful scenery and is famous for Jja-jang noodles. There were electrical carriers, so some of the students rode the carrier and took pictures of the beautiful scenery. For our final stop, we went to Psyche world, a theme park of butterfly. It consists of Psyche story room, butterfly exhibition room, and a maze room. Psyche story room shows us various myths and stories related to butterflies and insects. The butterfly exhibition room is the world’s biggest butterfly museum. The maze room tells about the love story between Psyche and Cupid. In Psyche world, there were also some special exhibition room; Animal center, Queen’s house, and Mirror palace. Animal center is made to play with animals. Queen’s house shows various jewels and accessories of royal families all over the world. The Mirror palace is a maze with mirror walls. Around the theme park, there was a garden made with glass flowers. The places had beautiful landscape and offered us a lot of amazing things to experience. This Jeju trip will remain as a precious memory in my heart forever.

What’s happening WITHIN YONGHWA??
Hugs for Free! ● Yonghwa Girls’ High School had a special event on November 3rd, the Students’ Day. Many teachers held out posters with “Free Hug” signs. Students who had finished their lunch could get a Free Hug with teachers and get candies as well. High school students these days tend to be shy about expressing their hearts in words or with hugs. But this was a good opportunity for students and teachers to show their affection, encouragement, and thankfulness to each other. Free Hug event cheered the senior students who will soon be taking the university entrance exam. You might wonder what the Student Day is in the first place. Is it a day that Yonghwa made? Or is it an official day? Let’s take a look into the history of the student movement and the values in the Students’ Day.
History of the Students’ Day ● The Students’ Day was first enacted in 1953 to commemorate November 3, 1929 the day the Korean students held a demonstration against the Japanese students in the district of Gwangju. It all started in October 30, 1929 when Japanese students harassed a female Korean student at a train station. Japanese student Fukui, Tanaka harassed a Korean female Park Ki-ok. Her cousin, Park Chun-jae got angry and got in a fight with the Japanese students. Japanese police came and arrested the Korean students instead of the Japanese. That was unfair to Korean students. After that, there were big fights between the Korean students and the Japan students until November the 3rd. On November the 3rd, Gwangju students held a big demonstration against Japan. And it became “the Gwangju Student Movement.” After that, Japanese police arrested hundreds of Gwangju students. Gwangju Student Movement was an independent movement against Japan, and this movement was spread throughout the country. Now, this student movement sparked the sprit of future pro-democracy movements. We should celebrate the fact that students in their teens, just like us, actually protected our country, and we should also thank all students who fought for Korea and our rights. Ham JiHyun (10135)

What’s happening WITHIN YONGHWA??
Cheers and Prayers : D-0 ● What can be the thing that makes every Korean student nervous? Yes, that’s right. It’s Sooneung! Sooneung, as everybody knows, is a Korean scholastic aptitude test. Students are to go to universities mostly depending on this test scores and it takes place only ONCE a year! And that’s why this test makes every Korean student so nervous. This year’s Sooneung took place on November 18th. Yonghwa’s senior students were all sent to different schools to take the test and I wondered how the atmosphere was. So I interviewed Im Inji, a manager of the students association who was there at the test site to cheer and support the Yonghwa seniors. Jieun
Nice to meet you.
Inji
Nice to meet you, too.
Jieun I am a reporter from N.O.T.E and I want to hear about the overall atmosphere of the Sooneung site at that time. Inji Well, it was quite warm, in fact. I mean, the atmosphere was not that dreary as most of you imagined. A lot of people including parents, student associations from other schools came to support the test takers. We prepared it for about two weeks. We made our own cheering songs and shouts, prepared pots and cups to make warm teas, and we made pickets so that Yonghwa Seniors could recognize us. Megastudy even came to give blankets to students! Jieun
What do you mean by cheering songs and shouts?
Inji Oh, we changed lyrics of some famous songs like DJ DOC’s ‘I’m a person like this’, 4minute’s ‘Hot Issue’, Seo Ingook’s ‘I Love U’ and IU’s ‘You Know What’ with contents supporting the Yonghwa girls going into the test sites. As we sang with loud voices, students from other schools tried to make louder voices. It was quite fun and competitive. Jieun
Wow. You guys must have done a lot of work!
Inji Yes, we did. The day before the Sooneung, I and four students went to Cheongwon Girls’ High school to save a place. We had to go there by 6 o’clock in the morning to get a place so-called Myoung-dang, a space right next to the school gate. We got the right spot and there, we served teas, and gave out tangerines and Hershey’s Chocolate and etc. I wish our seniors did their best and get good results! Jieun
Me, too. Wish them good luck! And thank you for the interview.
2010 Sooneung has now ended and now it’s our turn! Let’s study hard and achieve the score we want in the next Sooneung. Go for it, Yonghwa Girls! Joung Jieun (20136)

“Smart” “Smart”Revolution for Smarter Education
Revolution for Smarter Education ● Along with the advent of the smart phones, the smart tablet PCs are being i ntroduced to various fields of society including EDUCATION. They are replacing loads of heavy textbooks, notebooks, and pencils for students. Devices such as electronic blackboards are replacing dusty chalks and chalkboards for teachers. Students get to learn and experience classes conducted via live web-based video conferencing with students from opposite side of the world. Simply put, schools are also becoming “smarter.” Yonghwa has been working hard to become “smarter” as well. Over the years our school has installed several electronic blackboards in multimedia and specialized, single subject classrooms. You can find several electronic lecture desks as well. On the fifth floor of our school, there is a specially made classroom for distance learning. This year, we have had video conferencing with various schools around the world.
Smart Education at Yonghwa • Video conferencing with students of OLSH(Our Lady of Sacred Heart) in Austrailia • Video conferencing with students of Madison High School in Texas, USA. • Afterschool video conference lesson with Sogang University. • Video conferencing with Linda Sue Park, the writer of the book A Single Shard.
To make our educational environment “smarter,” we should take full advantage of various electronic communication channels and social networking services. All students and teachers should familiarize with e-learning to make smarter lessons, a smarter school, and smarter lives!
Social Networking Services Social Networking Service is an internet connection system that enables us to strengthen our personal relationship through spacious cyber space which takes place on the web. The best example is ‘Twitter’ and ‘Facebook.’ So called ‘SNS,’ for short, helps world-wide people to share their personal affairs like posting their photos and writing about their daily lives. Schools and especially parents have strong expectations about the positive roles that social networking could play in students’ lives, and they are interested in using social networking as a tool. Social Networking in Schools gives incentives for student participation. A true social learning network incorporates innovative teaching through internet-connected communities and digital resources that enables students to master the curriculum and to learn issues beyond the classroom. For example, ePals provides projects linking classrooms from over 200 countries. Focus areas are biodiversity, history, geography, and human rights, global warming, and etc. International Society for Technology in Education(ISTE) allows student to develop computer literacy, critical-thinking abilities, global awareness, collaborative skills, and multi-cultural friendships. Through CultureQuest, learners explore other peoples and cultures via inquiry-based classroom projects that involve studies of art, music, literature, religion, values, daily life customs and traditions of other cultures. They might even communicate using Skype, which is free online video conferencing software.

“Amazing” Tablet PCs
● 2010 was the year of the smart phones. 2011 is expected to be the boom of the tablet PCs. Tablet PCs are used as mobile personal computers with endless applications that are useful in all different kinds of situation and need. So tablet PCs are very useful in many areas of society.
Personal Uses Most generally, for personal uses, we can contact friends and families anywhere anytime. We can enjoy social networking like Facebook, Twitter, Cyworld, or check our e-mail, while we are on the subway or at school. We can find out the exact arrival time of the bus we’re waiting, we can find the exact location of our current standing and our destination, like the Global Positioning System. We can reserve movie tickets, immediately type up our lecture notes, etc. We can check the news, read ebooks(electronic books) at any time.
Hospitals Through tablet PC technology, many workers are benefiting from this amazing device. It allows work to be carried out much more efficiently and less time consuming. Companies are purchasing thousands of tablet PCs for their staff members, and are applying it appropriately to their business purposes. For example, in the case of Samsung when their employees go for a compensation duty, everything is simplified with a tablet PC. All the process of receiving a call, distributing, issuing and concluding the accident can be all managed in a short term. Also, with the tablet PC, they can take the pictures of scene, have access with the company network and print the information whenever and wherever necessary. In the case of Lexus Korea, they have distributed iPads to their salesman and whenever they meet their client they can immediately present their brochures and video clips of their car models to effectively persuade their customers.
Businesses
blet PCs has greatly changed the tradition of medical consultation at hospitals. Ipads, and galaxy tabs have removed hospital charts that was used in the process of diagnosis and treatment. So far, doctors had to bring along the charts, and had to explain the patients’ symptoms and conditions usually just in words. However, now, with the tablet PC, there is no need to bring heavy charts and the doctors can show the X-ray files, personal medical history, and the test results directly to the patients for them to verify and see for themselves of their state of condition with reliable sources. The application for the doctors to use is called the ‘Dr. Smart’ and took over half a year to invent. It has functions for doctors to record, take picture and take note of the symptoms and patients complaint right ahead. Also they can refer to the medical resources and documents right away when needed, where needed with the tablet PCs.
Education
We can use tablet PC for education. Students can learn with authentic materials. For example, the whole class can go online and learn about the current affairs while studying politics or social studies, the current weather condition while learning science, the current stock prices while studying economics. Education will not simply be based on theory or textbook lines, but knowledge we can easily apply in reality. Also, textbooks and handouts can all be simply downloaded and stored for use instead of using paper. You can take notes, highlight, and leave bookmarks on important lines. When writing essays or reports, you can simply type up your writing and submit through online classroom. Students can all share their work and comment each other on a website that connects the network. Students can learn history and literature with various multimedia and even learn difficult math equations with animation. There are various apps, free of charge, that can used for educational purposes.

Pros and Cons about Tablet PCs for Education ● iPad ,a kind of tablet, uses in education in many countries. Some people glad to use it in education. Because it could make school lectures richer than textbook and more convenience to carry and use. Others, however, don’t agree with that. Since students can’t concentrate on the lecture than before and expense for using iPad in education is too much. They insist that we should be more careful to use iPad in education properly. Pros
Cons Lessons would be enhanced with more pictures and animation. The more the visual aids, the more effective and easier it is for students to understand. Various and frequent in-class activities would be possible. It could save lots of paper consumption and it might be help prevent environmental pollution and waste. It could save lots of paper consumption and it might be help prevent environmental pollution and waste. It can disturb student’s concentration. Tablet PCs have lots of functions, not just texts and educational applications. Functions like chatting, playing games and listening to music will hinder their studies. Students are not old enough to control themselves.
10
Compatibility and speed is not that satisfying. When taking notes, speed is the most important thing. Writing or typing on the touch screen is uncomfortable and slower. Also, as for now there are not enough contents and proper applications. The expense. Individual purchase will be a burden. Government can’t afford to provide tablets for everyone because of budget limitations. Also, teachers who aren’t so familiar with new devices will be unable to adjust, thus there will be loss in valuable human resources.

Imagining Yonghwa Classes with Tablet PCs ● Introducing tablet PCs in classroom will make a lot of changes in Yonghwa, too. The classes will be based on wireless network, electronic board, touch screen, and electronic schoolbook programs. There will be no more of blackboards, notes, worksheets and school bags. Teachers don’t have to write on the board, and students who sit on the back or at the edge of the classroom will no longer have problems in hearing or seeing. It will be a lot more comfortable for both teachers and students. In the near future, Yonghwa students will download E-books and do the daily reading relay program. They take notes on the E-book while reading: they are preparing for the discussion time. The discussion time is held once or twice in a month, on Monday 7th period, and students use the wireless network to do it. Not simply reading and writing a book report like before, the new technology made the relay program deeper. During classes, teachers upload their powerpoint presentations, and students download it and take notes on it. Compared with blackboards and notes which were used before, the powerpoints and electronic school books provide students better and more various images. At the science class, the teacher uses animations or videos to learn about the process of experimentations. The tablet PC reduced the limitation on space. Before tablet PCs become available in school, it was hard to do experimentations or watch the process of it in science classes. In fact, we just learned it’s outcomes, not the process. But now, we learn both the outcomes and process, and therefore, we can learn more organized. The music class and art class is based on appreciation. Students can use a lot of good apps and programs to enjoy and study fine arts. The history class uses programs which teach students about the historic artifacts, and animations which help students understand the relationships between important historical events. During the breaktime, some girls visit the school homepage and read the lunch menus. Others do their homework. Even homework which needs to be prepared a lot such as researching or preparing a presentation can be done inside the school, at any time. Once in a month, every class in Yonghwa takes class together with a school in Australia. It was also done before, but it was very uncomfortable because it relied on a screen which shows the whole class. It was impossible to do directly between students and students. However, the tablet PCs made it possible to take the man to man style: now it’s possible to communicate directly between students. The after-school supplement learning system also changed a lot. In the school homepage, there are some internet lectures which were done by the school teachers. The girls all access to the homepage and pick a lecture which they want to do. Every Yonghwa students can enjoy good and customized lecture which was done by teachers. Wee Ha Neul (10123) Ham Ji Hyun (10135)

Who’s reaching BEYOND YONGHWA??
The Annual Yonghwa GLS Program ● From August 22th to 28th, 16 students who participated in GLS(Global Leader Scholarship) program had visited Singapore so as to do intensive research on each theme they have chosen and prepared for over 3 months. They stayed in a hotel called ‘Hotel Emerald Singapore’. Each group was made of 4 students who had agreed on one specific theme. The topics varied, from Environment to Education and so on. After choosing a theme, the group had to think about more specific subjects. The whole work had to cover both Korea and Singapore. Onsaemiro team compared Public Education of Singapore and Korea. In Korea, they researched Science High School, Public High School, Art High School. They sent e-mail or called them to ask about their education surroundings. In Singapore, they visited SOTA, Singapore Education facilities, and MOE. They interviewed the school officials about education curriculum. They also researched about Singapore’s education by asking questions to the students in the streets.
Hanulseonggum team researched Korea’s popularity in Singapore. They visited Korean restaurants, Esplanade and met NUS Korean. Sinaburo team researched on the Environment policy of Singapore. They visited Marina Barrage, PUB Government facilities, New Water Visitor Center and so on. Sipdaedeuruisalm team researched about House Welfare of Singapore. They visited HDB Gallery, City Gallery, PTC and so on.
One of the students who participated in this program said “I was a little bit exhausted cause of the hot weather. But it was a rewarding and joyful experience. It was a good experience for me. If I ever have the opportunity to go there again, I will!”
INFOs about the GLS program • You can apply for GLS program in 2 ways. One is by receiving the scholarship the school presents at the beginning of the year. Another way is by applying and being chosen through English interviews and essays. • You need to be aware that you need lot of preparation in advance. You need to contact Singapore organizations. You need to make international calls and send formal E-mails in English.
• You need to research on your topic, the organizations you will visit, and also about the location and traffic of Singapore because this study research is a student-autonomous activity without a guide. • After the GLS program and study research, it’s not the end of the story. You need to prepare a presentation and make powerpoint slides including the research results and the first-hand information you have gathered. This presentation is made in front of the principal, teachers, and parents!
Many of the students who participated in GLS were satisfied with this GLS Program. GLS program is sure to provide us with great experience. If you like challenge, and if you want to search out towards the world, the GLS program is definitely recommended! Lee Chan-Hee (10424)

Who’s reaching BEYOND YONGHWA??
Korean War Veterans’ Visit to Korea ● On June 24th, a ceremony was held to mark the Korean War’s 60th anniversary. Thirty three 2nd graders were invited to this ceremony as Korean representative students. We were to show gratitudes to the Veterans who had spent their 20s and 30s in Korean War that broke out on June 25th, 1950 and continued until July 27th, 1953. Although the veterans now were in their 80s and 90s, they all seemed to remember the things they saw and felt during the war and seemed to be quite pleased to visit a country they had fought for. Yonghwa girls that day were quite excited to meet the veterans. For most of us, it was the first time to meet and talk to real veterans we had only seen in textbooks and on television. After an hour long travel to expressway rest area, we could finally meet them. Each Yonghwa student was paired up with a veteran and were given some time to talk to each other until we arrived at the next place. After sharing our names, veterans told us about the real war they experienced and sometimes about their families and homes while Yonghwa girls told them about school lives and other things they might be interested in. We also showed gratefulness for all the sacrifices they made in Korean War and told them Korea might have been very different from now were it not for their sacrifices. After a few hours of talk, we arrived at Panmunjeom in Paju Gyeonggi-do that was set as Joint Security Area(JSA) between the US and the North Korea. The place had awe-inspiring atmosphere, being a border between South Korea and North Korea. Veterans and Yonghwa girls got off the bus and went inside the place. After listening to an American soldier’s explanations about Panmunjeom we then moved to our next place where we had a simple lunch. Veterans could have time to talk with other veterans and US Armed Forces in Korea. After that, we went to the final place where we all made our farewells. It was surely a meaningful event for both the veterans and Yonghwa girls.

Who’s reaching BEYOND YONGHWA??
The Model G20 summit for sustainable Development ● From 11th to 12th, November, Korea held a G20 summit level conference which for discussion about economic development and environmental problem, sustainable development. Somewhat, from 6th to 7th, November, there was a mock G20 summit-level conference, ‘ The Model G20 summit for sustainable Development’ at Seoul Namsan Youthhostel. About 120students who will lead our future world participated in it. The conference was held in order to improve youth’s interest about sustainable development and teach them a process of international resolution. The 120 students got into separate teams each representing a country participating in G20. It started from the orientation at 9th, October and representatives prepared for it almost one month. They had to make a plan how to escalate their nation’s benefit, pursue other representatives and write position paper and keynote address paper. There were 2agenda. The first is ‘A international cooperation plan as a justice of climate.’ Our school student, Kim Seung Yean(2-5) participated in it as a representatives of Russia and got a team prize. The second one is ‘Climate change and conversation to global green economy.’ Our school student’ Lee Seung Yean(1-2) and Jeoung Hee Yean(2-13) participated in it as Mexico and China representatives. The first agenda had 4 sessions and the second one had 3 sessions. There were few differences between 2 agenda’s conference, however the discussion’s rule was same. It was advanced like UN international discussion. First, various countries’ representatives announced their stand point and stated about agenda. Then, they wrote a practice paper and chose a swearing paper. The summit was more meaningful to us because our school students participated in it and did well. Let’s see their argument.
Russia
Mexico
China
1. A dvanced nations’ environment destruction badly affected the developing country. Russia’s useful forest ‘Taiga’ is being destroyed by odd intensive heat and drought furthermore polar bears are disappearing along with global warming.
1. Mexico wants to get active investment from advanced nations about developing recycling energy and transferring high technology industry.
1. Advanced nations have legal responsibilities about house gas. But they don’t seem to have any will to solve this problem.
2. We will reduce the amount of carbon released.
2. We will work to make our industrial technology meet the low carbon condition. 3. Try to spread statements to government officials about saving energy.

Volunteer Work at ● From November 10th to 12th, some of the Yonghwa girls disappeared! What happened to them? Actually they were those who went to G20 Seoul Summit 2010 for volunteering. It sure is a great chance for high school students to participate in such a big summit even for a volunteering! Especially for those who want to major in diplomacy or politics, this experience at Seoul Summit would allow them to understand that field much more deeply. So in order to deliver valuable information for our readers, I decided to meet one of the volunteers in 2nd grade named Joung Eunbin in the first class. Joung_Eun-bin ▶
Jieun Hello. I am Joung Jieun, a reporter from NOTE. I heard you did volunteer work at G20 Seoul Summit! How was it? Eunbin It was awesome! I was really much honored to be a volunteer at such a big summit! Jieun Could you tell me in more detail about how you got selected? Eunbin Well, the application for this volunteer work took place in May. I had to fill out an application form on the homepage and then someone from the G20 agents called me and I had to answer their questions like why did I apply for this job, what is the thing I expect from this volunteering work. It was kind of a telephone interview, I think. After I got passed the telephone interview, I got to pass through the documentation with my scores of internationally authorized English tests like TOEIC. That was the last hurdle and then I got passed finally as a volunteer at G20 Seoul Summit! Jieun Wow. It sure was a long journey! And what did you do there at the actual summit place? Eunbin I think I have to tell first how they trained me for the volunteer work. I had to attend several orientations including online training and gathering training. There I received education about moral standards volunteers should have, ways to take emergency measures and etc. Especially they took lots and lots of time for educating us about the problem of terrorism. We, of course, could not handle that kind of problem for ourselves, so we were told to get in touch with the police. They seemed to have intense anxiety about the terrorism. Jieun It seems quite exhaustive. Wow.
Eunbin It actually was. After all those education hours, every participant was placed in each group. There were groups for G20 Business Summit, G20 Bus Tour, subway, online counseling, traffic control, event hall and cultural properties. I was involved into the event hall group. I worked with two other volunteers in my peer group. One was from Myoungdeok Foreign Language Highschool and the other was from Changdeok Girls’ Highschool. They spoke fluent English and they all seemed to be interested in diplomacy stuffs. What we actually did in the event hall was to answer questions of foreigners as well as citizens around. In fact, there weren’t many people there because they had restricted civilian access around COEX where the G20 Seoul Summit actually takes place. We explained people why we were forbidding people to enter the place and also asked them to show their identification card. As it was lunch time, lots of workers at companies there poured out of buildings and it was quite hard to check each one’s ID card in fact. Jieun I didn’t know that the security was that tight! But it seems that you experienced a really great thing that you wouldn’t be able to get if it were not for the volunteer work. Eunbin I think so too. Jieun So, do you have anything to say to Yonghwa Girls? Eunbin Actually, I have. I recommend all of you to participate in volunteer works in these kinds of things as they are likely to provide us with great opportunities to learn the real things of the world. You can also make friends you can never meet in just school! Good Luck! Jieun Wow. Thank you for your kind answers. Have a good day! Eunbin Bye.
During the interview, Eunbin seemed to be really excited about even recalling the jobs she did there. I believe it was an experience no one can get from nowhere else! So why don’t you participate in volunteer works in these kinds of global events? It sure will provide you with great memories and learning!

Liberal Arts? Natural Sciences?
What is your choice? ● High school students are forced to make the choice of a lifetime; Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences? This seems to be too much for immature students with relatively unstable state of mind undergoing stormy and stressful transition-adolescence-to make such a crucial decision.
Liberal Arts It would be an excellent choice for students who are interested in Ideology, Psychology, History, Social Science, Literature, Philosophy, Law, Economics and any other fields similar to these to choose “Liberal Arts”.
Natural Sciences Students choosing “Natural Sciences” should find the study of principles or natural phenomenon-Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Physiology, Geology, Astronomy-charming and fascinating. The Way Liberal Arts See the World Like two roads diverged in the wood, sorry we could not travel both, we have to make a choice between them. Yet knowing how a path leads to more paths, we doubt if we should ever come back. No one knows what would there be at the end of each road like Frost once wrote in his poem.
The Way Natural Science See the World
Since our choice will make all the difference, we should be more deliberate and careful about the decision making. The ultimate notice for students who will make the decision or might have done already is just one thing: Follow your heart. Dream what you want to become in 20 years. You do not necessarily have to come up with a specific and concrete blue print. Just give it a shot. I hope the reason for your choice not to be rooted from your hatred toward certain subjects which will definitely lead you to a desperate failure. It’s better to let your passion and enthusiasm as the criterion for your choice. Whatever decision you will make, the thing that really matters is yourself. Throughout your life, you would face tons of choice-making situations every single day. Neither choice is wrong. Better option does not exist. All you have to do is to exert yourself and be fully engrossed with whatever you are doing. Remember, that is the only key to success. Lee Si-Yeon (21326)

The Ordinance of Students’ Right
What is it and is it the best way? Rights are only protected when duties are properly performed ● On November 1st, the prohibition of corporal punishment was declared in Seoul. Most students seemed to welcome this change, believing that their school life would become much better without corporal punishment. However, a few weeks later, teachers in Seoul started to complain about this change saying that students are not controlled anymore and that this change does nothing good to students. Some teachers reported that students are abusing the prohibition of corporal punishment. One of them said when she woke up the students who were seemed to sleep intentionally in the beginning of the class, those students refused to do so saying that they will report her in case she takes further actions. Then some video clips of students misbehaving in schools have been issued, too. With these issues, there has been a controversy over the Ordinance of Students’ Right which was the base of all these changes. The Ordinance of Students’ Right was declared with the Ministry of Education’s long efforts to create a better educational environment for students. This ordinance includes students’ basic rights like a right not to be discriminated, a right to be free from corporal punishment, a right to get proper education, a right to protect their privacy and etc. I personally think this change is desirable, a change that must have been made in sometime in the past. However, at the same time, we should know that the declaration of this kind of ordinance means that we students as well as teachers are not fully matured. In other words, I think the declaration of this ordinance premises that students and teachers cannot make a proper educational environment for their own and that they need government’s intervention for a desirable school life. Therefore, we should make our best effort to create a desirable school atmosphere even without these kinds of ordinances. Unfortunately, however, this ordinance made with a desirable intention came to give birth to some side effects. As some students got out of control, teachers made a kind of system that can control them within the range of the ordinances. In most cases, they created or intensified a penalty system which is to give penalties when students do something wrong. This might effectively control students. However, the thing that we should remember is that students are still young and that they can always make mistakes. I think it is not advisable to penalize all the mistakes a student makes. This will only create stark atmosphere in schools. Also, the fact that the records would remain for the rest of the life severely affects the students’ life as it would be always referenced when they try to enter colleges, companies or even when they marry. In short, this change made in the Ordinance of Students’ Right might work in a short term, but in the long run, this would give birth to other many side effects. Ultimately, I believe it wasn’t the best way to declare the Ordinance of Students’ Right as it is just a short term solution. I, therefore, think that it is best for all of us to make our own changes. Students should respect their teachers and teachers also should teach their students with hearts. Although it may sound a little ambiguous, I personally think this simple way is the best and the most appropriate way to create a desirable academic atmosphere in schools. Plus, we should always remember that rights are only protected when duties are properly performed. Joung Jieun (20136)

Online Lectures,
is it effective?
● Nowadays, it is easy to find Korean students listening to lectures online. Since 2004, with government’s effort to reduce the private education market, EBSi started to provide online lectures for free. Unfortunately, however, this led to the advent of another huge private education market with Megastudy, Vitaedu, Etoos and etc. These companies provide charged online lectures in various fields including Korean, mathematics, English, social studies and science. Its great popularity also led to coin new words like “Ingang” and “Star Teacher”. With this trend, I would like to see both positive and negative sides of online lectures especially regarding its effectivenss. A lot of high school students like taking online courses because they are provided in relatively low cost. When compared to live lectures, these online lectures are quite cheap which is about only the half of the live one’s. This low cost of online lectures surely serves to lessen the burden of education cost. Another reason for taking online lectures is because they allow students to take classes at home without having to go to hakwon. For those students who live far from the main hakwon area, online lectures definitely provide great chances to listen to lectures of good teachers at home. Especially this is really beneficial for those who live in rural areas where private education doesn’t exist, because they can get academic help from teachers online, which is impossible otherwise. Also, with PMP, students can listen to lectures wherever they are and whenever they want. For example, they can listen to lectures in buses or subways to use time efficiently or can listen to lectures during self-study hours after school finished. On the other hand, there are also many students who refuse to take online classes saying that online lectures are not interactive and therefore ineffective. They argue that because it is provided only through the monitor, students cannot actually interact with teachers, which is the most important thing for a successful class. Although there are some supplement services like Questions & Answers services, they are not enough for proper interaction between teachers and students. Plus, teachers cannot monitor students when they are in screens. This leads to the worst result because chances are, students can do other things rather than listening to lectures because there’s no one monitoring them. If students do not listen to lectures, then what’s the use of all the low cost and time - efficiency? In order to maximize the benefits online classes provides, I personally think that the interaction between teachers and students should be guaranteed in some way. For example, they may activate the Q&A services or provide online class takers chances to meet the teachers at least once. Without this disadvantage of interaction lack, I think it would be a good idea to take online lectures.

Three TIPS from Seniors ● You should prepare for SOONEUNG starting from your first year of high school! Don’t just buy stack of workbooks or sign up for academies. If you really want to raise your efficiency, keeping a healthy body and mind is the very first step you should take. Tip 1
Sleep tight Falling asleep with your books open and the lights on doesn’t provide you a good rest. It only makes you feel more tired. It is important to sleep “properly” with the lights off and getting into bed. Take a nice warm shower, have short 10-minute stretch, and put on your cozy fuzzy socks. Getting enough sleep doesn’t necessarily mean 10 hours of sleep. 5 hours can be enough if your body gets a deep rest. Sleeping properly helps your body to rest properly.
Tip 2
Make breakfast a habit Having breakfast focuses your concentration. Many students who don’t have breakfast tend to await the lunch time all morning, missing out on important lessons. That’s half of your day you’re missing out on. It might seem trivial, but it certainly adds up! Never rely on school snack bar to fill up your hunger! Most of it is instant junk food, not good for your body nor in thinking efficiently! Here are some nutritious food that helps your brain to work. Bring a fruit to school for snacks instead of bringing money to buy potato chips at the snack bar. • nuts : makes your brain cells grow • iron content food : helps your brain work more efficiently. ex) meat, fish • seaweed : improves your brain development • DHA : makes your brain stronger • fruits : good for your stress Tip 3
Find a mentor The word “Sooneung” itself is an enormous pressure to most of the high school students. Many students get overly stressed and sensitive about every little thing that happens around them. You can relieve your stress by talking with someone who can really understand and encourage you. There are many people who can cheer you up. Find someone you can call up or meet to share your concerns, be honest about your grades, and feel okay to show your tears. If you succeed in finding the right mentor during your first or second year of high school, then your senior year will be much more comforting and settled just to know someone is out there who really cares and wishes you the best. It is best if the mentor is of the same gender, older than you, and someone who majors in the field of your interest. Kim Bo-Kyung (20205), Kim Yeon Su (10503)

Interview with Brian Teacher! This is an interview with Brian teacher. It was a very good time and he answered all the questions sincerely.
● Part 1
About Korean Culture Q1 : What did you think about Korean culture during your stay in Korea? A1 : T hat question is so difficult to answer. Maybe I should answer this question about differences between Korean culture and American culture. First, education is one of the most different aspects. In Asia, especially in Korea, students go to school a lot. Also, they go to academies even on Saturdays, but western students do not. Also, the food culture is different. In my country, people eat food for one person but here, people share food with each other. So they usually eat food for two or three people. I was surprised because of these differences. Q2 : What is the hardest thing to stay in Korea? A2 : Korea is such a crowded country. Korea is relatively small country but many people live in Korea, especially in Seoul. So I feel it is a little noisy. Sometimes, I miss quiet places like my home in Kentucky. Q3 : What is your favorite Korean food? A3 : Probably ribs of pork. Of course Bulgogi and pork belly too. That food tastes really good!
Part 2
About Yonghwa Girls’ High School Q1 : What is the most impressive thing in our school, Yonghwa Girls’ High School? A1 : I guess the special study room is the most interesting thing. And I think the school festival is the most impressive enjoyable thing. Because on school festival day, all the students can show off their talents. I think Yonghwa girls have a lot of surprising talents. Q2 : I heard that you would leave Korea after this semester. Is there anything to say to Yonghwa girls’ high school? A2 : Personally, I like this high school job because it is very nice. And I really like teaching. I think this school is very clean, and looks nice. Also Yonghwa girls’ high school has many facilities for students. My coworkers and students are good, too. So I think our school is a wonderful place.
Part 2
About Brian Teachers’ Personal Story Q1 : Who is your favorite singer? A1 : M y favorite Singer is Neko Case from USA. Her songs are very beautiful and realistic. Also in another aspect, her songs are very sorrowful. My favorite band is Collective Soul. Their old music is nice guitar rock. Q2 : Who is your ideal type of woman? A2 : I like a person who is smart and well-read. Also, I like a open-minded person, and pretty. I think my ideal type is similar with Natalie Portman. If a person liked exercising, it would be perfect! Tak Eun-Seo (10132)

sub characters Cho-Sun : A famous Gisaeng in the country. ‘Gisaeng’ means a female entertainer in Chosun Dynasty. She didn’t know that Yun Hee is a girl. So Chosun loves Yun Hee as a man. However, she gets a good grades, and the king doesn’t know that she is a girl, so the king orders her to attend Seunggyungwan. In Seunggyungwan, she meets Sun Jun Lee, Yong Ha Gu, and Jae Sin Mun. Even though their political views are very different, they became good friends. Also, she falls in love with Sun Jun despite Sun Jun’s father’s strong disagreement. Finally, the four friends all pass Daegwa with good grades, and Sun Jun’s father also consents to Sun Jun and Yun Hee’s marrige. Sogwa is the preliminary test of Daegwa, and people who pass Sogwa can apply for Daegwa. Seunggyungwan is for people who get good grades on Sogwa, and people who pass Daegwa can get a position in the government office.
The Days in Gyujanggak Sun Jun’s father, Jung Mu Lee, found out that Yun Hee pretended to be a man and studied at Seunggyungwan. Therefore, he got really mad and ended their marrige. The four friends promise to be friends forever.
Seunggyungwan Scandle Seunggyungwan Scandle is the remake film of the book, The Days in Seunggyungwan. The main story is same as the book, but it became more specific than the book. It shows more about the Chosun Dynasty, and the love lines between characters more complicatelly. In the drama, there are two main points: the first one is King JungJo’s innovation plan and political conflicts between the ruling class, and the second is love lines between characters. The ending has also been a little bit changed. Yunhee helps King JungJo’s innovative plan, but she was caught that she is not a man. JungJo first thinks to expel her, but he decides to delay his plan and protects her. She also marries with Sun Jun. Even though the drama didn’t get many viewers, it made a lot of fans for its interesting story and characters with strong personality. Also, some new great actors were also showed up; like Jung Gi Song who acted Yong Ha, Yu Cheon Park who acted Sun Jun, and Ain Yu who acted Jae Sin. Wee Ha Neul (10123)

● It is not too much to say that, nowadays the world of singers is under the Idol teen groups. They become most of the teenagers’ icon. Teenagers mimic their fashions, styles, songs to be like them and to escape from their stressful school work and life. But behind the Idol’s splendor, Idol rights have been a serious issue. Between singers and management, unfair and unilateral contracts are the main point. Flourishing popular song field of action in Japan, Kara, Korean Idol girl group informed the annulment of a contract to DSP Entertainment on January 19th. Except the leader of Kara, 4 members canceled their contracts and urged that entertainment compelled performances by making a bad use of position and profane individuality. From H.O.T, Super-Junior, to JYJ, there were many groups that had contraction problems with their company. Usually these contracts shall remain in force for a period of 7 to 10 years. “Actually it is impossible to move to another company, because the high costs of penalty and the long term of a contract” said A, a member of the famous group. This is not the first time, thereupon, a Court of Justice and the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) stepped forward to look into the matter. In the long run, a Court of Justice and the FTC raised the hand of Idol singers. FTC has given a warning and makes the entertainment groups correct the term which is more than 7 to 10 years. Also a Court ruled controversial contracts invalid for Super Junior member Han-Kyung. The other side, the contracting parties asserted that these judicial decisions do not consider the entertainment industry’s angle. They also claimed it will carry the atmosphere that it is proper to disregard business practices. On this, music critics referred this action of Court and FTC would affect many Idol groups and entertainment management agencies, yet there are too many unfair cases that weren’t revealed, and would need regular conduct surveillance. They are also concerned about an adverse effect of K-Pop which is quite popular in other Asia countries nowadays. Lee A Lan (20224)
