INN AQUA INN, an English word referring to a refuge or hostel IN AQUA, written in Latin, in the water
2019
In the Yesa reservoir, at the foot of the Aragonese Pyrenees, this project arose in response to the programmed construction of a new dam which will cause the disappearance of several elements of the historical and archaeological heritage of the area. The most affected area is the Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James), with 22km of its route flooded, along with several buildings associated with it, which will disappear under the water of the reservoir once the dam is built. Next to the ruins of the village of Ruesta, abandoned after the construction of the first dam in 1960, the project appears as a construction that emerges from the ground, colonizing the water, taking back what the reservoir has taken away. The double program proposed acts as a motor for the rehabilitation of the village of Ruesta, the Aragonese Way and the reservoir itself: a hostel for pilgrims and a spa with thermal pools. By means of a constructive system of prefabricated concrete, as if they were large stone blocks, a piece is achieved that blends in with the surroundings of the ruins.

The construction system is built by different pieces and pre-fabricated elements that are visible both in the interior and in the exterior. As if they were large stone ashlars, the different concrete formwork allows for the definition of an irregular cut in the façade and the emulation of the ruins and stone environment surrounding the building. The prefabricated pieces with which the structural wall of the building is built are designed using a computerized numerical control (CNC) milling system, which makes it possible to create a wide variety of moulds and achieve all the necessary pieces and textures.

These concrete forms are made up of two sheets or walls of reinforced concrete, joined together by ribs forming a structural network responsible for transmitting all the vertical forces of the wall.

THE
THERMODYNAMICS
MACHINE The space as the wine maker in the ageing bodegas of the Sherry region
The study of the thermodynamic behaviour of the spaces where the wine is transformed becomes a tool for understanding the “dialogue” that is established between wine and space, understanding the space as the most important element of this architecture, beyond the construction or the design of the wineries.
ETSAM, UPM Final Degree Project Tutor: Jesús Ulargui
Claudia Romero García
The union of architecture and wine is as old as the cultivation of the vine itself. The space where the wine is aged must have very specific hygrothermal conditions that ensure the optimal development of the wine. These conditions have been improved and perfected as a result of the technological advances throughout the world of wine, however, within the Sherry region, this is due to the environmental conditions of its surroundings and the use of these conditions through architecture, which has allowed for a unique wine of an extraordinary quality, 100% naturally aged.
2018
The research carried out and the methods used to analyse the wineries introduce us to the world of energy and stands as a great challenge in which we must begin to combine and apply all these concepts in other areas of architecture and urban planning.

Each of the cases analysed is complemented by a graphic study using a video to aid with the visual understanding of the hygrothermal phenomena studied. The videos are in a virtual platform and are accessible through the QR code or the web address provided in the documentation.

OBSERVATORY LA REAL CASA DE CORREOS (THE ROYAL HOUSE OF THE POST OFFICE) Bustling and centrally located, the Plaza de la Puerta del Sol is one of Madrid’s emblematic spots, where several of the city’s historic and busiest streets converge and where the city’s most representative elements are concentrated. Among them, the oldest building of the Puerta del Sol: the Real Casa de Correos, where a tower clock stands out and whose chimes mark the new year for the great majority of Spaniards on December 31st. The relationship between these two entities is evident; both are intrinsic parts of this monumental environment, thereby generating an inherent relationship of symbiosis. While the Puerta del Sol stands as a place open to the public which promotes the relationship between the city and the citizenry, the Real Casa de Correos does not allow this interaction, closing itself off from the city, the square and the people, generating a separation that seems inscrutable. Eliminating this barrier seems inevitable and strengthening the link with the city becomes necessary.

TIME
An intervention inside the building is proposed, which will serve as an extension of the Puerta del Sol and, therefore, introduce the city into the monument. Besides opening the emblematic building to the square, the monument will connect with the city of Madrid thanks to the lookout point that crowns the intervention.

MIRABILIS CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
RE-USE ITALY Pending resolution TEAM: Marina García Arroyo Laura de Torres Millán Lucía Zamudio Pastor Claudia Romero García
Considering the ruin as a starting point leads us to create an action in which the protagonist does not cease to be the historical memory of an era where Mirabilis was the source of the city. Respect and magnify are the concepts that define the project. The proposal is born from the idea of not touching the ruin, of preserving the state in which it is found by incorporating secondary structures where the different programmatic scenarios can take place and which do not compete with the environment. In this way, a set of footbridges defines the space allowing us to walk through the ruin to admire its beauty from different points of view, or to access the museum of contemporary art that is generated through a metal substructure from which to suspend works. The materiality blends in with the atmosphere. We create spaces with polished concrete that do not gain attention. The furniture is presented as works of art in itself, understanding the cisterns as a whole exhibition space. We extend the museum space towards the roof, where together with the market, we create a public space for the city to use the museum as a place of relationship where they can enrich their culture and at the same time enjoy the views towards the bay in a friendly environment. In this way, Mirabilis is a walk through history as well as a look into the future. A space where the public and the private are blended to endow the city.
