For three decades, Karen Donatelli Cake Designs has specialized in creating beautiful, delicious, custom and specialty desserts. Karen and her team diligently work to make each cake, pastry and dessert a renowned piece of culinary art. The masterfully crafted delicacies blend eye-popping design with superb and innovative flavors. Karen started her career at 15 in a small hometown bakery. She then apprenticed at the 5 star Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida before studying pastry at the Culinary Institute of America. Karen opened the bakery and café in 2012 in downtown Asheville, featuring a daily bakery case with croissants (sweet and savory), brioche, specialty cakes, and pastries made from the finest ingredients. PROFILE OF CHEF JOE SCULLY

Chef Joe Scully and business partner Kevin Westmoreland opened Corner Kitchen in 2004, bringing hand-crafted food and service in a casual setting to historic Biltmore Village. In 2012, the partners opened Chestnut in the heart of downtown Asheville, quickly becoming the place to go for creative cuisine and craft cocktails. Chestnut is in close proximity to most of Asheville’s favorite venues, making it the perfect spot before or after a movie or show. Serving lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, Chestnut is “downtown, not uptown!”

So, what makes these two restaurants different from others? “Chestnut and Corner Kitchen are open seven days a week; our guests don’t have to remember our days of operation. The word “No” doesn’t appear anywhere on our literature or menus. We try our best to say “Yes!” to whatever we can, whenever we can.

What is your culinary background? “I started working in restaurants in 1977. The first job was as a Host at a very busy Houlihan’s Old Place in Hackensack, New Jersey. In 1987, I entered the Culinary Institute of America, in Hyde Park, NY. After graduation I was given a fellowship at The Culinary Institute’s Escoffier Room Restaurant. Then I got to be the Executive Sous chef at the prestigious Cherokee Town and Country Club. In the following years leading up to opening The Corner Kitchen, I held Executive Chef positions at Indigo Coastal Grill, The Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta as well as the United Nations in New York City.”
