WE KNOW THAT BOOKS HOLD
TRUE POWER: Power to affirm our identities, to build understanding with people unlike ourselves, to challenge our misconceptions, and to broaden our awareness of the world. In the 60 years that Lerner Publishing Group has been creating children’s books, inclusion and diversity have been important considerations for our company. In fact, the very first books published by our founder, Harry Lerner, in 1959—titles such as Michael Gets the Measles and Dear Little Mumps Child—were written by a female doctor and featured a female doctor in the illustrations. At this time, only 6 percent of the doctors in the United States were female, and women in general were not encouraged to have careers outside the home. We published the first children’s book to provide a scientific explanation of skin color. The original Mr. Bumba books in the 1960s featured illustrations showing a multi-cultural cast of characters, intentionally drawn to be diverse. Our list has grown and evolved over the years, and we’re proud to have many award-winning, diverse titles on our list. We continue to make diversity a core component of all of our publishing efforts, from our employees to our authors and illustrators and the subjects of the stories, photos, and illustrations. Recently, we began exploring ways to make those books more discoverable. We looked at definitions from a variety of movements, including We Need Diverse Books, #OwnVoices, #ReadWoke, and the “Windows, Mirrors and Sliding Glass Doors” theory. We followed conversations on social media, reviewed diversity surveys from the Cooperative Children’s Book Center and other organizations, and looked for common themes. We developed nine categories of diverse books, which are noted in the key and on the inside front cover. This brochure highlights some of our best titles in picture books, graphic novels, novels, and nonfiction, and the index starting on page 24 will lead you to titles by thematic category. Look for additional titles online at lernerbooks.com/DiverseBooks. We hope you will discover offerings that will help you provide more diverse books for your readers. We welcome your feedback at em@lernerbooks.com.
WHAT IS DIVERSITY? “We recognize all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, Native, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities.” —We Need Diverse Books “Our Definition of Diversity”
WHAT ARE
#OWNVOICES BOOKS? #OwnVoices is a hashtag/term coined by YA author Corinne Duyvis to refer to stories about diverse characters written by authors that are a part of that same diverse group.

WHAT IS
#READWOKE? READ WOKE
TM
#READWOKE “Read Woke is a movement. It is a feeling. It is a style. It is a form of education. It is a call to action; it is our right as lifelong learners. It means arming yourself with knowledge in order to better protect your rights. Knowledge is power and no one can take it away. It means learning about others so that you can treat people with the respect and dignity that they deserve no matter their religion, race, creed, or color.” —Cicely Lewis, creator of #ReadWoke
#READWOKE BOOKS Challenge a social norm Tell the side of the oppressed Provide information about a group that has been disenfranchised Seek to challenge the status quo Shed light on an issue that many may not perceive as being an issue Source: cicelythegreat.wordpress.com

Bass Reeves was a fearless, larger than life lawman. Outlaws feared him and good citizens respected him. He achieved all this in spite of whites who didn’t like the notion of a black officer.
When African American cowboy George Fletcher unfairly lost the 1911 Pendleton Round-Up to a white man, the outraged audience declared him “people’s champion.” Vaunda Micheaux Nelson and Gordon C. James share his thrilling, important story.

Miep Gies, Anne Frank, and the Hiding Place
Caren Stelson illus. Akira Kusaka

When the atomic bomb fell on Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945, Sachiko’s home turned to rubble. Yet a delicate, green, leaf-shaped bowl—which once held her family’s meals—survived intact and came to serve as a vessel of hope and peace.
Miep Gies, who as a girl was a refugee during World War I, recognized that Europe again became a dark place under the Nazis. With bravery and loyalty, Miep helped to shelter Anne Frank’s family, preserving the great legacy of Anne’s diary.
