Future energy challenges Tomorrow’s Smart Grid challenges are the interaction between three factors. 1. Increased production of renewable energy on the supply grid With increased production from wind and solar plants, etc., the delivery of energy to the grid will fluctuate much more. When it is windy, a lot of wind energy will be produced; when it is cloudy, less solar energy will be produced, etc. In order to avoid periods of congestion/ failure in the energy supply, it will be necessary to create a balance with large capital expenditure to create a larger and more robust power grid as a result. This is simple in Denmark, as our energy grid is very robust, but in many other countries this will present a challenge, and therefore attention is directed to Denmark to find system solutions.
4
2. Consumer behaviour Private homes, businesses, offices and public institutions are all consumers of energy. Their consumption patterns over the years, months, weeks, days and hours are based on decades of secure access to all the energy they need. Therefore, the consumption pattern is not aligned with the future production pattern for renewable energy, e.g. washing clothes at night or ensuring that an entire residential area can charge its electric cars at the same time. Security of supply is vital. Nor are the price structure and energy taxes aligned to this “new world, so there are no incentives within the private sector to change behaviour. Furthermore, knowledge of private consumption patterns is limited, as remote meters have only become widespread in recent years. Actual data processing is not widespread and so it is not possible to survey consumption in greater detail, e.g. which products use what and when.
3. Prosumers – the new consumers The renewable energy market is rapidly developing. New products for energy production from the wind, sun, ground, fuel cells, etc. appear every day, and efficiency is improving from year to year. Several of the products can be mounted directly in the home of the consumer, for example solar cells on roofs. This means that a private person or business is not only a consumer, but also an energy producer – a “prosumer”. This presents a number of challenges to energy security and balance, as the energy will now be flowing in both directions within the grid. Finally, roll-out of electric cars is also expected to create huge challenges to energy security and efficiency, as the process of charging such cars puts a significant burden on the grid. Work is being carried out worldwide to create solutions to meet these challenges, including local energy storage options to contribute to the energy balance, as well as solutions in which electricity, heating, cooling, hydrogen and gas are combined in total intelligent energy storage systems.
It’s all about creating a balance between production, consumption and storage, so that renewable energy can be exploited in the best possible way.

Green Tech Center is a strategic collaboration between a number of strategic partners:
INSERO Horsens, Lysholt Erhverv and CASA and private interests involved in setting up Green Tech House, Green Tech Park, and the framework for the Living Labs area. In addition, the building is administered and a large number of projects and customer/investor matching activities are coordinated. Vejle Municipality is an official partner, contributing knowledge, networks and entrepreneurship, and is part of a number of joint projects on the operation and development of Green Tech Center related to climate and business development. The University of Southern Denmark is involved in research and development projects around Smart Grid system management, both nationally and internationally. VIA University College is involved in development projects, particularly concerning geophysical solutions, etc. Syddansk Erhvervsskole runs their technology centre with courses and projects within the electrical and plumbing industry from Green Tech Center. Danish Technological Institute cooperates with Green Tech Center, as one of several GTS institutions, to provide Danish and foreign companies with special tests and certifications. Lean Energy Cluster is Region Syddanmark’s cluster within streamlining of energy consumption and intelligent energy systems.
Smart Grid Living Lab
Smart Grid Focus This requires collaboration when it comes to devising future intelligent solutions.
The switch to a fossil-free society is probably the biggest challenge facing Danish society in recent times and will require the development of innovative energy system solutions that will have export potential

European transmission and distribution companies have produced a visionary strategy to enable the European electricity system to accommodate the large amounts of renewable energy agreed by EU Member States in the Climate and Energy Package from 2007. By 2018, approx. EUR 2 billion (nearly DKK 15 billion) will have been invested. This will create huge demand for intelligent solutions and products, and Danish companies are in a favourable position with regard to this market. The research team at the University of Southern Denmark is a natural partner for close cooperation with businesses and other for-profit institutions at Green Tech Center for analysing the opportunities that may

Green Tech House Optimal environment for development and testing of future energy solutions under one roof. Green Tech House is a cluster covering approx. 4,000 m² and has been established on 3 floors, with space for around 150 Triple Helix employees. The building was constructed in accordance with the BR15 building regulations, with a number of exciting and innovative solutions both inside and out. Green Tech House has been prepared for future Smart Grid solutions in energy production, energy storage and energy management of office buildings, and contains open source infrastructure and systems in the following vital areas: • An open source Building Management System, which guarantees the possibility of testing/demonstrating new products in intelligent control, etc. of the office building. • Data loggers of energy consumption down to the individual workplace that can document
• Information systems for behavioural tests/demonstrations with regard to employees in the building under the theme “Green Technology meets people”. • Control and connectivity options for electricity, heat and cold storage in and outside the office building and the electric car stands. • The roof level has been prepared for installation of various energy and environmental solutions for testing and demonstration and can be visited via elevator and stairs (the fifth facade of the building).
the energy and environmental effects/results. • An open tech room, which can be used for testing/demonstration to people interested in operation of intelligent office buildings.

Pulse
In addition, national and international partnerships are being established and a wide range of workshops, conferences, seminars, etc. are being held. Green Tech Center collaborates with the following organisations:
