120 applicants want to be DeKalb’s next superintendent By Ken Watts

One hundred twenty applicants from across the country want to be the DeKalb County School District’s next superintendent. The district said on April 13 that its fast-track search for a successor to Superintendent Michael Thurmond has been very fruitful. The candidates all applied by the district’s April 10 deadline. Thurmond, who has steered the district through one of its most turbulent periods, joined the district on July 18, 2013. He will step down in June.

DeKalb Schools, with 100,000 students, is the state’s third-largest district. The new superintendent will manage an $800 million fiscal 2015 budget and 14,000 employees. The DeKalb School Board wants to have a new superintendent by June and is under the gun to meet its timeline to pick a

new leader. Board Chairman Melvin Johnson said the time frame is “pretty tight” but the process is on schedule. “Right now we’re on target and we hope to stay on target,” he said on April 15. At the board’s April 1 meeting, several residents, citing progress since the district’s near loss of accreditation in 2012, urged Thurmond to stay awhile longer. Thurmond, however, has not changed plans to return to his law practice in June. Johnson said the board took note of public comments but remains focused on finding Thurmond’s successor. “We’re committed to the search process,”

he said. The School Board hired Chicago-based PROACT Search LLC on Dec. 17, 2014, to conduct the search for a new superintendent. PROACT CEO Gary Solomon said he is happy with the pool of candidates who responded. “They’re a talented and diverse group of professionals,” he said. The applicant pool is 65 percent male, 58 percent black/African-American, 27 percent white/Caucasian, 3 percent Hispanic and 2 percent multiracial. Please see SEARCH, page 3

District to keep tons of trash out of county landfill By Ken Watts

Thousands of children from 50 DeKalb schools are now recycling tons of paper, plastics and other material that would have gone to the county landfill. Their efforts could save the School District as much as half a million dollars a year. Interim CEO Lee May said the partnership with the schools is critical. “You will help to communicate the value of recycling to the rest of the community,” he told students and teachers attending an April 15 intergovernmental agreement signing ceremony. “We have 50 schools right now. Our goal is to expand it to all 139 schools representing 10,000 classrooms.” The recycling program has been under way since last fall. School and county officials symbolically signed the intergovernmental agreement that was approved by the DeKalb Board of Commissioners on April 7. The ceremony was attended by teachers, students and administrators from the DeKalb Early College Academy, which is next door to the School District’s headquarters and the board room where the ceremony was held. Under the agreement, students and school staff collect recyclable materials at their schools and the county provides collection and disposal services. May said the arrangement is more environmentally sustainable because it helps reduce the amount of trash dumped at the county’s Seminole Landfill, which is rapidly running out of space. May said landfills have a limited life expectancy, emit toxic gases, and are unhealthy for the environment and people living near them. DECA students were busy on campus

this week emptying small waste basket-size recycling bins into 50-gallon containers that will be picked up by sanitation crews. “The recycling committee members go to each classroom and collect the two to three bins of recycled materials,” said sophomore Destiny Williams. “We do this twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.” Sophomore Savannah Pittman said the DECA student body seems to have bought into the recycling project. “We’re aware of the negative impacts that bottles, cans and other trashed materials can have on the environment,” Savannah said. “So we want to come together as a community to form better habits.” Freshman Destiny Smith said a seemingly minor effort such as recycling paper can have a major impact. “Many of our animal habitats are decreasing because of the cutting of the trees,” she said. “With our recycling efforts, we

hope to put a stop to the damage of animal habitats.” Students from 17 DeKalb schools laid the groundwork for the agreement in October 2014 by saving 52 tons of paper, plastics, wood and glass from the landfill in a monthlong “DeKalb Makes Recycling Simple” competition. The results convinced county and school officials that such a partnership could work. Gordon Burkette, Keep DeKalb Beautiful director, said the partnership with the schools simplifies recycling by allowing single containers to hold many kinds of materials such as plastics, paper, cardboard, aluminum, tin and steel. The containers are Gordon Burkette placed in classrooms, administration offices, cafeterias and hallways.

Burkette said aggressive recycling could save the School District up to $500,000 and help inspire students to pursue careers as entrepreneurs in the lucrative field of recycling technology. “There are thousands of jobs in Georgia alone created through the use of recycled materials, and we want our young people to be the ones to create new markets for recycled goods,” Burkette said after the ceremony. District 3 Commissioner Larry Johnson said the school recycling project puts students in a leadership role on the environment. “They’ll learn good recycling habits that they’ll take home and encourage their elders to develop as well,” Johnson said. Super District 7 Commissioner Stan Watson believes the program could spur action on other longstanding environmental issues. “It could get them thinking about taking control of our litter problem along highways and streets in the county,” he said.

Sax player Ryan Kilgore collecting music instruments for kids Get out those dusty musical instruments stored in closets and under beds and put them to good use – donate them on April 25 at the Mall at Stonecrest. The Ryan Kilgore Music Foundation is spearheading the collection drive, which starts at 4 p.m. next to Sears at the Lithonia mall off I-20 at Turner Hill Road. Fourth-generation sax player Ryan Kil gore, a Southwest DeKalb High alum, started the foundation to help others in need. The Atlanta native picked up the sax at age 8, and by 14, he was booking weddings. He vividly recalls how he got his first horn. “My mom was renting my instrument,” Kilgore said. “When she couldn’t keep up with the payments, my grandfather had to step in and buy it for me.” Because of his grandfather’s unwavering support, Kilgore, the oldest of seven, promised to always pay it forward. “My generation played an instrument or sang,” he said. “But after high school, many people gave up. Their instruments are sitting on the floor. So now these people can donate their instruments to those who can’t afford it.” Kilgore, 34, will release his debut jazz album, “Just Walk,” with a concert and tour kickoff on April 26 at the Porter Sanford III

songs from his new solo project. Kilgore, who plays the sax and drums, attended Clark Atlanta University on a full scholarship. As a drum major, he was chosen to star in the 2002 blockbuster movie “Drumline.” After graduation, he was discouraged from playing professionally so he accepted odd jobs. In 2006, he quit his Buckhead security job. “I wanted to pursue music full time,” he said. “It put me in a spiritual desert, just me, God and my faith. In less than a year, I was in Stevie’s band and touring Japan.” Kilgore has toured with Tyler Perry’s stage plays and he’s worked with legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. He says it’s his time now to open up and let his fans know about his journey. “This whole record is about faith,” he said. “The ‘Just Walk’ movement shows how ‘getting by’ is just not good enough. Exhibit on Ga. poverty opening

Author Jennifer Teege shares her search for identity in “My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me: A Black Woman Discovers Her Family’s Nazi Past” on April 22 at the DeKalb Library. The talk starts at 7:15 p.m. Teege, a German-Nigerian woman, was given up for adoption as a child. When she happened to pluck a library book from the shelf in 2008 in HamJennifer Teege burg, she had no idea that her life would be irrevocably altered. Recognizing photos of her biological mother and grandmother in the book, she discovered a horrifying fact – her grandfather was Amon Goeth, the vicious Nazi commandant chillingly depicted by actor Ralph Fiennes in “Schindler’s List,” a man known and reviled the world over. State agents shut down Cake Cafe for $76,000 in unpaid taxes By Ken Watts

Customers arriving to pick up their orders on April 15 at the popular Cake Cafe bake shop in Decatur found the store shuttered by the Georgia Department of Revenue. State agents arrested and handcuffed store owner Ardra Tippett for alleged tax fraud. Tippett is charged with operating a business without a state tax license, unlawful conversion of state funds, and theft by Ardra Tippett conversion. Nick Genesi, Department of Revenue spokesman, said the raid was far from a surprise for Tippett. “We had been trying for over a year to bring her into compliance,” Genesi said. “Closing a business is a last resort after everything else fails.” Department of Revenue notices posted on the store’s locked front door detailed more than $76,000 in unpaid taxes owed by Tippett, who has been in business since 2009. Tippett built a thriving business creating artisan cakes for weddings, birthdays and other special occasions. The shop’s cupcakes, including strawberry swirl, red velvet, butter cream cheese, German chocolate, Key lime,

sweet potato, pecan and apple pie, were popular with customers. In addition to removing Tippett in handcuffs, revenue agents confiscated store equipment and left eight to 10 plastic bags filled with store supplies and office papers in the parking lot behind the shop at 368 Candler Road. Tippett also owns CEO Tax and Accounting Service nearby. Agents say Tippett charged Cake Cafe

customers state sales tax in 2013 and 2014 but did not remit the funds to the Department of Revenue as required by law. Investigators say the raids at Tippett’s businesses are part of a months-long probe of tax preparers suspected of millions of dollars in theft. On Wednesday, agents also arrested Xzavier Sullivan, owner of VLOS6 Tax Services, at 3285 Columbia Woods Drive in Decatur. Sullivan admitted to using a relative’s

Preparer Tax Identification Number to file his clients’ returns, according to WSB-TV. Genesi said agents did not shut down Tippett’s tax service on April 15 but seized boxes of evidence from it. Agents suspect her of unlawfully increasing customers’ refunds. Tippett was booked into the DeKalb County Jail. She had not made bond at press time on Thursday. The Cake Cafe’s closure left several customers with incomplete orders. Jasmine Brown of Buckhead arrived Wednesday afternoon to make a payment on a $900 cake she ordered for her May 30 wedding. Instead, she was wondering how she will get her money back. “I gave them $550 for a nine-tier cake and my wedding’s next month,” she said. “Now I have to find someone else to make my cake.” Ashley Collins of Decatur stared at the collage of notices on the shop’s door, hoping to find a way to contact the owner. “I already paid them for a cake for my daughter’s first birthday party,” said Collins, also hoping for a refund. Thaddeus Walker noticed a box filled with credit card receipts among the items dumped in the back lot. “I don’t know what to do with it, but it sure doesn’t need to be out here,” Walker said.
