The Piggly Wiggly supermarket on Candler Road is getting a face lift as protest leaders call off their weeks-long demonstration outside the store. Store owner Ken Hong said Tuesday that he will spend $120,000 to update the 40-year-old store, which has been the target of daily picketing by two civil rights groups since alleged food quality problems surfaced at the store in April. Hong says the store at 2112 Candler Road will close in the next few days for an unspecified time. “We hope to have everything finished Please see PIGGLY WIGGLY, page 2

RaceTrac to beautify Wesley Chapel Road The Wesley Chapel/I-20 entrance and exit ramps will be extensively landscaped by RaceTrac as part of conditions for it to build a new store at the intersection of Wesley Chapel and Snapfinger Woods Drive.
Gateway sign and extensive landscaping vowed By Jennifer Ffrench Parker
The Wesley Chapel/I-20 entrance and exit ramps and a portion of the median will be transformed into a welcoming gateway by the RaceTrac company. The beautification project is part of 19 conditions that the oil company agreed to in its quest to secure approval for a new service station it plans to build at the intersection of Wesley Chapel Road and Snapfinger Woods Drive in Decatur. The costs were not available at press time Thursday. “What good will pretty signs and trash can do? We want economic development, but at what cost?”
Sydmar Golf Management back at Sugar Creek course after lockout Marie Dunovant and Sydmar Golf Management are back at Sugar Creek Golf & Tennis Club after being locked out by CGL of Savannah Inc. DeKalb spokeswoman Jill Strickland confirmed Thursday that Sydmar and its staff returned to the facility on May 24, two days after its partner CGL of Savannah put them out and changed the locks. “Sydmar returned to the property on Friday and has been there ever since,” Strickland said. “That’s all that we know.” She said that the lockout of Sydmar was “a business matter between partners.” The county-owned Sugar Creek and Mystery Valley golf courses are operated by Georgia Golf Partners LLC, comprising Sydmar Management, operator of Sugar Creek, and CGL of Savannah, which operates Mystery Valley. Golfers, tennis players and other spectators were on the property on May 22 when CGL’s Vice President Alan C. Cale
Sydmar and its president, Marie Dunovant, returned to Sugar Creek on May 24 after a dispute with its partner. Jennifer Ffrench Parker / CrossRoadsNews
removed Dunovant and her staff from the premises and changed the lock. The dispute arose when Sydmar failed to pay its $50,000 into a $100,000 capital reserve account and maintain the Sugar Creek course in accordance with the partnership’s contract with the county.
In an April 30 “Notice of Breach of Time to Cure,” Kevin Walton, the county’s director of purchasing and contracting, gave the partnership “30 days from the date of the letter to cure the deficiencies.” Both golf courses were analyzed in July 2012. Mystery Valley was rated A, and Sugar Creek was rated D because of poorly maintained bunkers – no sand, grass growing in and water standing. Fungus was found on some greens, and shrubs and weeds needed to be cut and tree limbs needed to be pruned at bridges, among other deficiencies. Neither Dunovant nor her lawyer Pam Stephenson returned telephone calls by press time Thursday. But last week, Dunovant said she had until May 30 to make fixes but CGL removed her company on May 22. She said she had liquidated assets to come up with the funds and was ready to put the money in the bank on May 23. She said they are making improvements to the greens.

portation,” Zickert said. Before the commissioners voted, Robert Douglas, a 34-year South DeKalb resident, told them to deny the applications. “We don’t need another service station,” said Douglas, who is president of Creekwood Hills Homeowners Association in Decatur. “We don’t need RaceTrac to beautify that area. We are currently fighting for a CID. A CID would enable us to beautify that area. So just to have a service station to tell us we are going to plant some flowers and put some signs up. We have resources. We have too many service stations.” Elfrida Perry, who lives close to the site, said that big oil already left two contaminated lots on Wesley Chapel Road, north of I-20. “An Exxon sat there. A Texaco sat there and they Elfrida Perry are both contaminated,” she said. “No one talks about that.” Perry said that while the land sits vacant it might be unsightly, but unsightly is not deadly. “This pollution will affect elderly as well as the young and unborn children. Why? Because we want economic development. Yogurt and fruit will not make up for the amount of pollutants that will put in the air that we have to breathe. What good will pretty signs and trash can do? We want eco-
nomic development, but at what cost?” Willie Pringle, a community council member who opposed the project, said that another service station is not going to better the neighborhood. He told commissioners he would have a problem with them siding with people trying to make money. “The community is going to be here when the businesses are gone,” he said. “We can do better than a service station. Looking at this here, it’s all about money.” Kevin Chapman, coordinator of the Wesley Chapel Curb Appeal Task Force, said Wesley Chapel has been in a state of decline since he purchased his home nine years ago. “We believe that some Kevin Chapman of the enhancements they are proposing will create a different standard as far as the maintenance and the upkeep and the appearance of the Wesley Chapel corridor.” District 5 Commissioner Lee May, who represents the area, said the service station is not the best use of the property. “I would rather see a much larger vision for this, but at the end of the day, I had to ask myself, is this a net gain based on the amount of concessions that have occurred?” he said. “Yes, I would like to see a lot more. At the end of the day, this is something that will add value and will help to generate additional development in the area.”

the store’s interior, including replacing the lunch meat cooler and installing an 8-foot salad case, a 60-foot produce case, a new 50-foot dairy cooler, and 256 feet of shelves throughout the store. Hong said he also will resurface a 92-foot meat cooler, install three new meat freezers and 24-foot island meat freezers, and refurbish the checkout area. Lithonia-based Operation Lead and the DeKalb SCLC have staged daily protests at the store since a WSB-TV report on April 26 detailed a customer’s complaints about unrefrigerated meats, moldy produce, and a reddish liquid dripping down a wall. The liquid was later identified as corrosion on top of the old cooler. On April 26, Georgia Department of Agriculture inspectors cited the store for four health violations for “items stored too close to the floor” and “excessive buildup in the meat coolers.” Hong said business has plummeted 50 percent since the daily demonstrations started. Picketers carry black-and-white “Bad Food Store Must Go” and “Don’t Shop Here” signs. Counterdemonstrations by store supporters have not softened the impact. Piggly Wiggly has been in the Candler Plaza shopping center since the early 1970s.
Some quality complaints date back years under several owners. But with few grocery alternatives on the Candler Road corridor, considered a food desert, residents continued to patronize the store. Piggly Wiggly and Big Bear next to the Gallery at South DeKalb are the only supermarkets left on Candler. The Kroger in Rainbow Village near Candler and I-20 closed on May 3. A Wayfield Foods Market shut down in 2010. Hong said he was ready to begin remodeling but first wanted to sit down with protest leaders and get their input. His lawyers, Atlanta-based Beal Law Group, tried to shut down the protests in a May 14 letter threatening Operation Lead President John Evans with libel and slander charges. “We hereby make demand upon you to immediately cease your protests against the store as such are unwarranted, baseless and designed to damage the Piggly Wiggly store owners,” Andrew M. Beal wrote. The protests continued. Knight said that they hope to hold a joint press conference with Hong on Nathan Knight Monday.

“We were stunned, but we immediately began taking steps to recoup the funds meant for these disabled artists.”
6 indicted for stealing from disabled artists By Ken Watts ken@crossroadsnews.com
Six people accused of stealing $1.68 million from a company set up to benefit disabled artists have been indicted by a DeKalb grand jury. The indictment returned on May 23 said the defendants, most of them relatives and full-time and seasonal employees, created a fraudulent checking account in the name of the for-profit Mouth and Foot Painting Artists, based in Atlanta, and over five years stole and deposited the group’s donation checks into the fraudulent account. DeKalb DA investigators say that between Jan. 1, 2005, and July 19, 2011, checks were written from the fraudulent account to each defendant – Christina Kelly; her former husband, Glenn Kelly; her daughters Kiante Smith Christina Kelly and Tyleshia Avant; and Tujuana Ross and her former husband, Rory Ross – and debit cards connected to the account also were used so the defendants could benefit from the thefts. The indictment said at least one of the thefts occurred in DeKalb when Tujuana Ross unlawfully took checks totaling $10,000 and gave them to Christina Kelly between Oct. 26, 2006, and June 23, 2011. The funds allegedly were used to take trips to Las Vegas, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Los Angeles; make payments on a time-share property in Florida; service their mortgages; and pay rent and cell phone bills. The defendants are charged under the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt
Organizations Act. Authorities say the racketeering scheme included identity fraud, theft by taking, theft by receiving, and money laundering. DeKalb District Attorney Robert James said the allegations are both troubling and alarming. “These charges outlined in the indictment are truly reprehensible when you think of people taking advantage of individuals with disabilities to line their own pockets,” James said. The indictment described the MFPA as an international for-profit association wholly run and operated by disabled artists to help them meet their financial needs. Because of disabilities sustained at birth or through an accident or illness that prohibits them from using their hands, members paint with brushes held in their mouths or feet. “We were stunned, but we immediately began taking steps to recoup the funds meant for these disabled artists,” said MFPA office manager Bernie Sheehan. “We have successfully regained most of the money lost and have directed it back into the programs that provide financial and moral support for disabled artists. We have already installed additional security measures and will continue our mission of helping our disabled artists.” MFPA creates cards, calendars, books and other holiday gifts produced by disabled artists and sends the items to prospective donors. In exchange, donors send monetary contributions to the group but are under no obligation to return or pay for the items they receive. As a result, the indictment said MFPA receives donations in unpredictable amounts
from donors across the country. The checks are mailed to MFPA, sorted and placed into an MFPA bank account for the benefit of the disabled artists. “Christina Kelly worked as a seasonal employee for MFPA beginning in 2002,” the indictment said. “And at some point prior to 2006, she devised the scheme to steal money from the company.” It said that without MFPA’s approval, Kelly opened a checking account at Main Street Bank in the name of “C. Kelly DBA MFPA” and began stealing checks from the offices of MFPA and depositing them in the fraudulent MFPA account. The indictment said Tujuana Ross, a full-time employee, joined the scheme in 2006. “Ms. Ross would steal checks from MFPA and deliver them to C. Kelly to be deposited into the fraudulent MFPA checking account,” the indictTujuana Ross ment said. “C. Kelly would then write checks to Ross from the fraudulent account.” Kelly also wrote checks to her daughters Kiante Smith and Tyleshia Avant, who were also MFPA seasonal employees; Rory Ross, former husband of Tujuana Ross; and Glenn Kelly, former husband of Christina Kelly, the indictment said. “Each person would negotiate their respective checks knowing that they had not earned and were not entitled to the money from MFPA,” the indictment said. If convicted on the racketeering charge, the defendants face a maximum of 20 years in prison.
MARTA hosting hearing on route changes MARTA will hold public hearings on proposed service changes to the “Q” bus routes on June 4 at the Georgia Piedmont Technical College Conference Center in Clarkston. The proposed changes, which will be implemented on Aug. 24, include the elimination of the Route 521 “Q-Express” and the restructuring of the Route 520 “Q-Limited.” The Georgia Piedmont Technical College Conference Center is at 495 N. Indian Creek Road. Customers and stakeholders can offer their input starting at 7 p.m. MARTA proposed the changes in response to service evaluations that show a greater demand for more frequent stops on Route 121. It will increase the route’s frequency from every 15 minutes to every 12 minutes. The 520 Q-Limited route will be rebranded as Route 121-Stone Mountain/ Memorial Drive “Limited” and will continue offering 10-minute headways during peak service. It will travel to all the stops previously served by the Q-Express, including the Goldsmith Park & Ride. MARTA staff will be available for a Community Exchange from 6 to 7 p.m. Copies of the proposed modifications are available at www.itsmarta.com and at MARTA’s Office of External Affairs, 2424 Piedmont Road N.E. in Atlanta, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. A summary also can be requested by leaving a message on MARTA’s comment line, 404-848-5299.

“We’re able to relieve a huge burden by providing a safe place where their loved ones are able to contribute to the common good.”
Redan Raiders’ state baseball title is one for history books Redan High School made Georgia baseball history on May 27 when its team became the first all-black team from metro Atlanta to win a state championship in the Georgia High School Association. The Raiders swept 12-time state champion Marist in a best-ofthree series. Redan (30-7) defeated Marist (27-9), winning the first game 11-0 and taking the second 4-3 at Marist’s Jerry Queen Field. The two Region 6-AAAA rivals played four times prior to the championship series. Marist won the regular-season meeting,

then beat Redan two-of-three times in the region championships series. The state win is the first title for a DeKalb public school since Dunwoody in 2007 and 10th overall. It was the third time Redan reached the final. Although the win comes at a time when black participation in baseball in the county is lagging, Redan is taking a step toward breaking the color barrier. Three of its graduates – Brandon Phillips (Reds), Chris Nelson (Angels) and Domonic Brown (Phillies) – are Major-League players. No high school in the state has more.
Wounded Warrior grant to aid recovery of veterans with brain injuries By Ken Watts

Post 9/11 military veterans with traumatic brain injuries will soon have another resource to help them recover. Side by Side Brain Injury Clubhouse in Stone Mountain Village has received a $50,000 grant from the Wounded Warrior Project to serve eight veterans who were injured in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars or developed medical problems that led to brain damage while on active duty. The vocational and psycho-social rehabilitation center will do for veterans what it is already doing for the program’s current participants, who are called “members.” Marian Dickson, a Side by Side resource development director, says the program helps members relearn lost skills. “After individuals leave acute medical rehab facilities, they come to us to relearn a lot of the skills they’ve lost due to their brain injury,” Dickson said. “Those lost skills can be vocational like learning to type again or learning to answer the phone again or reacquire soft skills like not interrupting people when they’re talking or how to carry on an appropriate conversation.”

for selecting candidates. Cindi Johnson, Side by Side executive director, said it’s an honor to serve heroes who sustained traumatic brain injuries while serving the country. “After years of advocacy efforts to offer support after medical therapies end, we are proud that Wounded Warrior Project chose Side by Side to welcome veterans and their families back into their metro Atlanta communities,” Johnson said. She said her organization “understands what it’s like to forget a name or feel exhausted by noon. Here, Clubhouse members are valued for who they are now, not as a patient or injury survivor, but as a contributing community member,” Johnson said. Dickson said recruitment for the Wounded Warrior grant began in mid-May. “We’ll probably continue the selection process until midsummer,” she said. “We hope to bring at least eight veterans into the Clubhouse.” Those close to the program say it is not therapy in the formal sense, but members

The nonprofit says the Clubhouse model of partnership between members and staff working side by side to operate its day program is based on trusted relationships, on strengths and on mutual respect. Along the way, members gain confidence in their ability to reconcile their cognitive challenges, and they and their families learn to accept and embrace this “new normal.” The Wounded Warrior grant for veterans covers 12 months with two months set aside
reacquire capabilities by doing certain tasks that they have been assigned around the Clubhouse. They’re paired with other members or with volunteers to work in food service, the business office and maintenance. Therapists Cindi Hargrove and Mike McCord founded Side by Side in 1999 with help from their employers, the Shepherd Center and Emory Healthcare. It opened in Decatur in 2000 and moved in 2007 to its current facility in Stone Mountain Village – a converted two-story 1920s bungalow. Dickson said the group has been pretty successful, serving nearly 400 individuals and their families. The Clubhouse provides respite to the members’ home caregivers. “We’re able to relieve a huge burden by providing a safe place where their loved ones are able to contribute to the common good of this community and acquire skills that they can take out into the greater community.” Experts say rehabilitation from brain injury is not a quick fix and it may take up to 10 years to see significant progress. Side by Side operates a day program in which its 50 current members and staff work side by side to keep their Clubhouse running and to support members as they relearn skills, rebuild relationships, and restore meaning and purpose to their lives. An estimated 50,000 service members have been physically injured in recent conflicts; another 320,000 have experienced a traumatic brain injury on deployment; and as many as 400,000 live with invisible wounds of war – combat-related stress, major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Steven Nardizzi, Wounded Warrior executive director, said partnerships help the project reach out to injured warriors. For more information, visit www.side bysideclubhouse.org.

“We’re trying to make sure physical activity becomes an everyday part of school for our children.”
$1 million to boost physical activity at schools Subdivisions The Georgia SHAPE program, which is fighting childhood obesity, now has $1 million more in its war chest. The award from the Coca-Cola Co. will help implement a Georgia SHAPE initiative encouraging 30 minutes of additional physical activity in all elementary schools in the state. This physical activity is in addition to structured physical education classes, not a replacement, and can be led by any teacher. Gov. Nathan Deal, who launched the SHAPE fitness initiative in May 2011, joined Coca-Cola chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed on May 8 to celebrate the company’s pledge. He said childhood obesity decreases academic performance, increases the chances of sickness and disease, and shortens life expectancy. “We’re trying to make sure physical activity becomes an everyday part of school for our children,” Deal said. In contrast, more physical activity means higher test scores, increased attention in class, and a healthier student population. Georgia SHAPE is a public-private partnership to promote childhood fitness and build a culture of wellness among the state’s youth. Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health, said the funds will have a significant impact on the lives of our children today and well into the future. “Unless we address this obesity epidemic
Gov. Nathan Deal, Coca-Cola CEO Muhtar Kent, and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed celebrate Coke’s pledge to help Georgia SHAPE add 30 minutes of physical activity.
facing our children right now, they will likely suffer lifelong consequences of obesity – diabetes, hypertension and heart disease,” she said. Georgia was once known as the state with the second-highest rate of childhood obesity in the United States. But in April, government statistics showed a 5 percent decrease in the state’s childhood obesity rate, dropping Georgia to the 17th spot on the list. Fitzgerald said that kind of progress is encouraging, but there is still much work to be done. The $1 million award to Georgia SHAPE
is part of $3.8 million that Coca-Cola is donating to programs aiming to make all Georgians healthier. It also has given $1 million to Walk Georgia, a physical activity promotion program created by the University of Georgia’s Cooperative Extension, and $1 million to Atlanta’s Centers of Hope, Reed’s initiative to provide after-school programs and development for Atlanta youth. The remaining $800,000 will go to other physical activity programs, including the Atlanta BeltLine and the PATH Foundation. For more information, visit www.georgia shape.org.

“It’s been a blessing. It’s taken a tremendous financial burden off my family.”
15 grads head to college with $16,000 Simon Scholarships By Jessica Smith
Darius Little’s early years were in constant flux as he watched his mother, who was raising two boys on her own, count pennies to get by. After a layoff in the early ’90s, she packed up Darius and his older brother, Davonte, after being evicted from her apartment. “My mother was constantly struggling to put Darius Little food on the table and keep a roof over our head,” Darius, a Southwest DeKalb graduate, recalled on Tuesday. “Because of her financial situation, we had to move around a lot.” He attended seven different elementary schools, and in his sixth-grade year, he and Davonte moved in with their aunt, Catreil Range. Over the next six years, Darius settled down and managed to climb to the top percentage of his class with a 3.4 grade-point average. He dreamed of going to college but knew he had no way to go. In his sophomore year, he found a way through the Ronald M. Simon Scholar Program, which benefits academic high achievers facing economic worries caused by immigration, death, sickness and job loss. The 2013 graduate is one of 15 scholars headed to college this fall with a $16,000 scholarship from the Irving, Calif.-based foundation. Through the program, Darius and the other scholars also get leadership training, community service opportunities, college tours, a laptop computer, $500 annual award, SAT prep, and academic tutoring. His aunt said the scholarship has been a big help. “It’s been a blessing,” Range said. “It’s taken a tremendous financial burden off my family.” The Ronald M. Simon Scholar Class of

2013 was recognized on its annual banquet held May 28 at Emory University Conference Center Hotel in Druid Hills. Nine of the 15 students – Brittany Williams, Melat Hagos, Brandi Nicolls, Noah White, Matthew Seals, Brieana Hollis, Raven Hutchinson, Nicholas Crosby and Darius – are from Southwest DeKalb High. The remaining students – Sumiya Culler, Greta Movsisyan, Winta Mehari, Jessica Stewart, Hoa-Mai Nguyen and Arfan Siddique – attended Chamblee Charter High. Since its launch in 2003, the Simon Foundation has helped 731 and awarded more than $22 million in scholarships. Its Atlanta chapter, which began in 2004, has inducted 157 students. Since then, scholarships have been awarded to students in almost all of DeKalb’s high schools. In 2008, the foundation selected four certified Simon Scholar High Schools in DeKalb. The others are Druid Hills and Redan.
Scholars are selected in their’ sophomore class and offered intensive support during their last two years in high school. Up to 20 scholarships are awarded annually in DeKalb County. Qualified students must have at least a 2.5 academic grade-point average, be selfmotivated, and be involved in community service. To stay in the program, they must maintain a 3.0 GPA during their senior year and throughout college. Darius said the scholarship will open doors. “I wouldn’t have been able to go to college without it,” said Darius, who is headed to Columbus State University to double major in business and economics. During the banquet, each of the students stepped onstage and spoke openly about their hardships and received words of encouragement from interim Superintendent Michael Thurmond.
“I want you to continue to grow and fulfill your every dream,” Thurmond said. Family members and younger classes of Simon Scholars also offered moral support. Many in the 100-member audience got emotional as the students shared their struggles and dreams. Southwest DeKalb graduate Brittany Williams said her life got off to a rocky start. “As a baby, I was found with burns on my body,” she said. “There were false accusations of who was responsible, and I was removed from my home and sent to live with my grandparents.” She received more than $500,000 in scholarship offers and will attend Duke University in the fall. “Because of the Simon Scholarship Program, I have hope for a better future,” Brittany said. For 15 years, Post 91 of DeKalb Fire and Rescue has partnered with area teens to teach them the ins and outs of fire service. One of those teens, Joseph Charles Wyatt, a student at Martin Luther King Jr. High, was a department favorite. “He was our lead man,” said retired Battalion Chief Seth Garcia, who knew Joseph since he was in the eighth grade. Joseph Wyatt When he passed away suddenly on Nov. 24 last year, the bereft team at Post 91 made the decision to create a scholarship to honor the 18-year-old avid DeKalb Fire Rescue Explorer, talented artist, AP student, math tutor, volunteer, poet and jokester. On May 22, the Joseph C. Wyatt Scholarship was presented to MLK Class of 2013 graduate Carlos Young. Carlos, who is headed to Full Sail Univer-
sity in Winter Park, Fla., in the fall, received the $500 book scholarship during a senior awards ceremony. Garcia said he knows how hard it is for college students to get books. “Hopefully this will take a little bit of a load off of his family,” he said. Post No. 91 decided to create the scholarship after reaching out to Joseph’s mother, Kathryn, shortly after his death. “When Joseph passed, his mother didn’t know what to do,” he said. “She was dumbfounded.” Garcia and fellow firefighters started to raise money to help with funeral expenses. The reaction was great. When V-103 hosted a fundraiser, they raised $10,000, more than they expected. “The least we could do was create a scholarship,” Garcia said. Carlos was picked as the first recipient because they wanted to give the money to a student involved in MLK’s visual arts program, just like Joseph.
