Johnson re-elected; Mann in runoff for sheriff Incumbent faces former CEO Vernon Jones By Jennifer Ffrench Parker
Congressman Hank Johnson is going back to Washington for a fifth term, while incumbent Sheriff Jeff Mann and three appointed School Board members will face challengers in July 22 runoffs. During the May 20 primary, nonpartisan and special elections, voters were kind to incumbents, returning most of them to office with large percentages. In a hard-fought race for the 4th Congressional District, Johnson led former DeKalb Sheriff Thomas Brown with 54.8 percent of the vote. In the sheriff ’s race, Mann had 39.9 percent of the vote to former DeKalb CEO Vernon Jones’ 22.3 percent. As expected, voter turnout was low across the county and the state. In DeKalb, only 78,531, or 20.1 percent, of the county’s 389,998 registered voters cast ballots. IncludCurtis Parker / CrossRoadsNews ed among those voters were 16,041 people Supporters of U.S. Rep. “It sounded like shots, but we’ve heard people firing weapons before … and no one’s been hurt until now.”
More shooting victims turn up in South DeKalb Derwin Brown’s
son jailed on pot growing charges
By Ken Watts
DeKalb Police have identified two women killed in a mysterious shooting on May 19 at a townhouse complex off Snapfinger Woods Drive in Decatur, but they have more questions than answers. The victims on Shellbark Road were identified as Shaniqua Camacho, 20, of Lawrenceville and 21-year-old Sonia Williams of Norcross. It’s not known why they were in the complex. DeKalb Police spokesman Capt. Stephen Fore said no witnesses have come forward and investigators do not have a motive for the crime. “The investigation is ongoing and we are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.” The killings are the latest in a string of unsolved shooting deaths that began on May 3 in Stone Mountain with the slaying of 29-year-old Michael Phillips on North Hairston Road. Nine-month-old Kendarius Edwards was killed on May 10 on To Lani Farm Road when two men invaded his home and shot three women, who survived. The DeKalb Crimetrac Web site lists 28 shootings in DeKalb between Jan. 1 and May 21 and a total of 800 crimes countywide. Nine of those gun incidents occurred in South DeKalb. The bodies of Camacho and Williams were found on Shellbark Road by a resident of the Walden Pond community next to her car as she was leaving for work Monday morning. Police said both bodies were found outside “very nearby” each other. One was on a sidewalk and the other was in a grassy area. Fore said that someone reported hearing

shots overnight. “But we were not notified until 6 a.m. when someone came out and observed one of the victims,” he said. Victoria Matthews was one of the residents who heard sharp noises about 4 a.m. Monday. “It sounded like shots, but we’ve heard people firing weapons in the air along Snapfinger Woods before and no one’s been hurt until now,” she said. Investigators say they are trying to find out whether the Shellbark Road slayings are linked to the earlier shootings. The rash of shootings has ignited concerns over violent crime and public safety in South DeKalb and throughout the county. Demontay Cullins, 18, was arrested and charged in Phillips’ death. Police later charged Oslushla Smith, 19, and his brother, Cutrez Johnson, 16, in the case. In the shooting that killed the baby, his
grandmother, mother and a family friend – women ages 36, 23 and 21 – were shot. One of them is four months pregnant. Police have not identified the women. Also on May 10, Alexis Malone, believed to be a witness to Phillips’ May 3 slaying, was shot and killed after being lured to a park on Agape Way in Decatur. Kayla Dixon and Oslushla Smith are charged in her death. Investigators think the attack that killed the baby may have been in retaliation for the May 3 shooting because Smith and Johnson are brothers of the baby’s uncles, but they have made no arrests in the baby’s death. Right Choice, a coalition of DeKalb pastors, is trying to raise $10,000 for a reward for information leading to an arrest in the baby’s death. Bishop Quincey Carswell said they have already raised $5,000. “We’re going to find the killers of this baby,” he told a news conference Wednesday outside the house on To Lani Farm Road.
Michael Gerrard Brown, son of assassinated DeKalb Sheriff-elect Derwin Brown, is being held without bond in the Gwinnett County Jail, charged with running a drug manufacturing ring that had more than 650 marijuana plants in three separate grow houses in Snellville and Michael G. Brown Dacula. He was arrested May 15 at a home on Hidden Lane in Snellville after police found 414 marijuana plants. Police say Gwinnett Metro Task Force investigators were following up on information that there might be drugs at the home when they encountered Brown and a strong odor of marijuana. Further investigation led officers to two additional houses, Brown’s primary residence at 3016 Overlook Hill Pass in Dacula and a third leased by Brown, at 3466 San Antonio Drive in Snellville. A search of the houses resulted in the seizure of an additional 251 plants, a small amount of loose pot, suspected narcotics and a partially dismantled grow room. Brown was charged with felony possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. His father was elected sheriff in 2000 but was assassinated in front of his home three days before he was to take the oath of office. Outgoing Sheriff Sydney Dorsey was sentenced to life in prison for ordering his death. Michael Brown’s next court hearing is set for May 29.

‘Your attitude will determine your altitude’ Here are excerpts from Dr. Jabari Simama’s speech to the graduating Class of 2014 at Clarkston High School on May 18. By Dr. Jabari Simama
By 2020, six short years from now, the degree that you will receive tomorrow will not be worth the paper it’s printing on. By 2020, more than 60 percent of all jobs will require some higher education beyond a high school diploma. The minimum standard for working in the future economy will not be a high school diploma, but at minimum a two-year degree from a technical or community college. So if there is anyone sitting here today who is not planning on going to a technical, community, or fouryear college or university, you will confront a sad reality come 2020. You will not be relevant in the job market because you won’t have the requisite education. Or you will be working at such menial tasks and such a low salary that it will be difficult for you to support yourself, not to mention a family. So graduates, high school graduation is only your ticket into the theater, the theater of life. The movie starts when you complete some form of higher education. Having said that, I do not want anyone here today to think that college is out of bounds for you, outside of what you are capable, personally, intellectually, or financially able of accomplishing. I say this to you because I stand here this afternoon, a son raised by a single parent – my mother.
“There will be rough spots and crooked places that you must navigate carefully through. But your attitude will allow you to stay focused and keep moving forward as others around you might be inclined to quit before they reach the finish line. … And once you’ve reached your destination, be like a Sankofa bird. Return to help those who have been left behind.” Dr. Jabari Simama
I am a man who was raised in poverty. Who grew up in a home with only cold water inside, but no inside toilets, no hot water – a three-room flat that housed two adults and three children. My front and back yards consisted of black dirt – no grass anywhere in sight. I was so ashamed of where I lived that when I rode my bike through our neighborhood, I would point out the best-looking house in the vicinity and tell my friends that was where I lived. My story is a familiar one of millions of poor boys and girls, stung by the stigma of poverty. I had to deal with the low expectations of others of how far a little black boy could rise from such humble beginnings. But I am here to tell you today that if you want something bad enough, no one can keep you from getting it. Only your attitude can limit your altitude. Said another way, to paraphrase the Bible, if a man (and may I add, woman, too) believeth, he or she is. If you believe it, you can achieve it. So I believed I could be a top percussionist (drummer) in my city. I learned to be a concert drummer around the third grade and
became one of the best in my city. I believed I could be a star football player and win a college athletic scholarship, and I did. I believed I could break a 10year record in the 400 meters by my junior year in high school and I did. I believed I could finish my doctoral degree from Emory University in three years at the tender age of 27, and I did. It was my attitude that determined my altitude. And so it will be with you. No excuses. No copping out. No blaming others or your personal conditions. Your attitude will determine your altitude. By saying this, I don’t mean that all your successes will be handed to you on a silver platter. There will be rough spots and crooked places that you must navigate carefully through. But your attitude will allow you to stay focused and keep moving forward as others around you might be inclined to quit before they reach the finish line. Your attitude will give you the resilience to bounce back if you face a temporary defeat. Keep moving forward, until you reach the end. And when you’ve reached your goal, don’t forget the many along
the way who helped you get to the end. Be like a Sankofa bird that returns home to help bring those forward who have been left behind. My college, GPTC, across the street, operates under the philosophy of the Sankofa bird. We believe we have a moral obligation to leave no one behind. We believe that you, our students, faculty, and staff, alike, must – as we move forward – not leave anyone behind. This is why we have the state’s largest adult education program. If you have a parent or sibling who did not finish high school, we can help them get their GED and afterward, hopefully, go to college. If you need learning support in order to get through college math or English, we have it. If you enter certain occupational areas like early childhood, information technology, nursing, welding, commercial truck driving, we have special tuition grants to write down the cost for you to attend our college. We would love to have all of you at our college, but we know that is not realistic. But we want to see all of you in college somewhere, if not at GPTC. Tomorrow, you begin the first step of a long journey. Remember, your attitude will determine your altitude. And once you’ve reached your destination, be like a Sankofa bird. Return to help those who have been left behind. Dr. Jabari Simama is president of Georgia Piedmont Technical College in Clarkston.
CrossRoadsNews founders, Law Day organizers praised Dear Editor: On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I wish to congratulate Curtis and Jennifer Parker, founders of CrossRoadsNews, who received the Liberty Bell Award presented by the DeKalb Bar Association during its recent Law Day luncheon. “So why should we invite another corporate giant in our neighborhood that’s bringing us down as far as our health is concerned.”
Commissioners to decide second McDonald’s fate on May 27 By Jennifer Ffrench Parker
Residents opposed to a second McDonald’s restaurant on Wesley Chapel Road will be headed to the May 27 DeKalb Board of Commissioners meeting to tell their commissioners why they shouldn’t approve the company’s application for special land use permit. McDonald’s Corp. is seeking the SLUP to install a two-lane drive-through on the property in the Kroger shopping center at the intersection of Wesley Chapel and South Hairston Road. The District 3 Community Council voted April 16 to defer the application for 60 days so that members could hear directly from the operator for the proposed restaurant. On May 6, the Planning Commission approved it with six conditions. The BOC has the final say on the application at Tuesday’s meeting. The 0.82-acre site at 2739 Wesley Chapel Road was the former home of a Hardee’s restaurant and is already zoned commercial. Because of new overlay district rules, a dual drive-through lane needs county approval. The proposed free-standing, 4,218-squarefoot restaurant would join an existing 30-year-old McDonald’s a quarter mile away overlooking the Wesley Chapel/I-20 east ramp. It will open 24 hours a day and have an 8-foot-high monument sign and 60 full and part-time employees and managers. Residents say having two McDonald’s that close to each other is unnecessary. David George, president of the South DeKalb Neighborhood Improvement Association, said he enjoys eating at McDonald’s and loves its chicken sandwich but having two McDonald’s within a quarter-mile of each other “makes no sense to residents.” “We have two doughnut shops looking to come,” he told the planning commissioners. “We accepted that. Six gas stations will be in that area as well. We accepted that. Now we are to have two McDonald’s also in the immediate vicinity. How much more should we accept? We deserve better and I think we should vote for something better than another McDonald’s.” Elfreida Berry, a member of the District 3 Community Council and a resident of the King Ridge Home Owners Association, said McDonald’s food contains vast quantities of salt and sugar, which causes whoever eats it to become addicted to junk food. “The food is very unhealthy,” she said. “So why should we invite another corporate giant in our neighborhood that’s bringing us down as far as our health is concerned. We have one. One is enough.” Peggy Hoppdy, a 33-year resident of the Main Fair subdivision, said she was concerned with the oversaturation of fast-food restaurants in the area, the proposed Mc-

Donald’s 24-hour operation, traffic backups at the busy Wesley Chapel/South Hairston intersection, security in the shopping center, and the unhealthy food. “We already have 13 fast-food restaurants within a one-mile radius,” she told the planning commissioners. “They are proposing to use the security in that shopping center that has proven not to be effective. We have had several crimes there already, including a recent killing.” The company says the new location, on the north side of the interstate, would serve residents who don’t want to cross I-20 and make a U-turn to get their morning coffee and breakfast on the way to work. Addressing residents’ concerns about the restaurant’s menu, Demetria Peterson, McDonald’s area construction manDemetria Peterson ager, said that many of the company’s menu items are 400 calories or less, but that they can’t control the selections that customers make when they come into their restaurants. “We have landed in the No. 8 spot for the top 10 healthiest restaurants in the U.S.,” she said. “There is no other quick-serve fast-food chain on that list. One of the things we need to do is do a better job of telling our story of the healthy choices we do have available.” Project manager Waylon Hoge told the commissioners that traffic to the restaurant would be regulated by the traffic light at Wesley Chapel and South Hairston roads, that the size of the property does not lend itself to the type of sit-down restaurants that residents say they want, and that developing the site will reduce security issues. “As part of this, Kroger has committed

pleasures of the weekend. “We should go out to a parade, go to a picnic, a ballgame, have a cool beverage, a hot dog, a hamburger,” he said. “Have some fun. Dance. Laugh. Because, you see, that’s why they gave their lives. They gave their lives so that you and I could enjoy our freedom to the fullest.” The ceremony, attended by war veterans from all branches of the armed forces, included a color guard from the Decatur High School Jr. R.O.T.C. and wreath laying. Ten recruits from Miller Grove and Cedar Grove high schools who recently signed up for military service marched up to the front of the auditorium to a round of enthusiastic applause. Interim CEO Lee May praised the memory of the fallen service members. “Public service pales in comparison to
our military heroes who put their lives on the line for us,” he said. Participants remembered Army Spc. Jamaal R. Addison of Lithonia, who was the first Georgian to die during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Patricia Roberts, Addison’s mother, told the rally that she is honoring her son’s sacrifice by helping to establish a scholar- Jamaal Addison ship in his name at all campuses of Georgia Perimeter College. “The fund will provide $500 to a GPC student veteran in the spring and fall semesters of each year beginning with the fall semester of 2015,” she said. to redeveloping the center and we really feel that a new development in the front corner will actually reduce crime,” Hoge said. “Instead of a vacant lot people can hang out in, we feel it’s a good thing from a security standWaylon Hoge point versus a negative.” Hoge said that an unfunded MARTA I-20 rail project could take right of way from the 30-year restaurant near the I-20 ramp. “McDonald’s has concerns about making a $1 million investment in remodeling and re-imaging it and then it be condemned very shortly,” he said. Before the Planning Commission unanimously approved the application with six
conditions, Commissioner Vivian Moore asked Peterson if in light of the cancer and diabetes in the community, the restaurant could become a pioneer. “I would like to know if we could be the first to look at creating a salad bar that will be in McDonald’s,” she asked. Peterson said that it was definitely something they could look at. “I can let the marketing team and the R&D know that it is something that is being requested from the neighbors,” she said. “It is something that we can look at. We are always looking at something different, even with this building. It is going to be one of the latest buildings that we are doing, the most energy-efficient ones that we are doing.” The conditions are: n A dual drive-through lane that meets and exceeds the development standards of the local commercial district and the I-20 Overlay District. n The building facade shall be four-sided brick and stone. n Access shall be subject to approval of the county’s Development and Traffic Engineering Divisions. n Refuse areas shall be fenced or screened with material matching the building’s facade and shall not be visible from the street and adjoining properties. n Adhere to the submitted Landscape Plan received by the county’s Planning Department. n The SLUP approval by the BOC has no bearing on the requirements for other regulatory approvals of the Historic Preservation Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals or other entity. The DeKalb Board of Commissioners meets at 6:30 p.m. The Maloof Auditorium is at 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur.

Seniors of Year crowned at gala Retired nurse Vivian Granger is the Lou Walker Center’s 2014 Senior of the Year. Granger nabbed the top honor from a field of 12 finalists at the May 3 Theresa Walker Senior of the Year Silver Gala Awards. Arlene Fitts-Winfrey was first runner-up, and retired Col. Hank Woolard was second runner-up. Granger, who was nominated by longtime friend Constance Talford, has been caring for people since she graduated from Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina with a degree in nursing. She served in several hospitals and officially “retired” from Grady Memorial Hospital in 1999 after 23 years of service. Fitts-Winfrey, who was nominated by Dr. Richard and Trust Zetter Shaw, was a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Tucker High School and retired in May 2013. She is considered a pillar in her church and community. Woolard, who retired from the Air Force, has called DeKalb his home for more than 30 years. He was nominated by Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Decatur. He volunteers with the Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services of Atlanta and the
FUGEES Academy in Clarkston. The Senior of the Year Gala honors DeKalb senior citizens who have served and continue to serve in their community. During the gala, a portrait of the late South DeKalb community activist Theresa Walker was unveiled. Walker died on Oct. 18, 2013, at age 68. Her portrait will be hung in the lobby beside a portrait of her husband, the late DeKalb Commissioner Lou Walker, for whom the center is named.
