Second Term for President Obama President Barack Obama and wife Michelle acknowledge the crowd with Vice President Joe Biden and wife Jill at campaign headquarters in Chicago on election night.
Party faithful bask in local triumphs, Obama re-election By Jennifer Ffrench Parker
President Barack Obama got four more years in the White House, and U.S. Reps. Hank Johnson and John Lewis and other DeKalb Democrats sailed to easy victory on Nov. 6 in a state that went overwhelmingly for Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney. It was a happy night for DeKalb Democrats. When Ohio returns put the president over the top, Democrats erupted in cheers and spontaneous dancing at their victory party at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in downtown Decatur. At Pesos Cantina restaurant on Flat Shoals Parkway, where about 150 people had gathered to watch the election returns, the crowd jumped to its feet when the president won the swing states of Pennsylvania and Iowa. When he reached the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the election at 11:20 p.m., chants of “Four more years,” and “Yes we did” filled the room. When someone led the spectators in a prayer of thanks, the room fell silent. Lorraine Brackery, who was among the crowd, said there were tears of joy. “People were dabbing their eyes with tissue,” she said. Obama won a decisive 303 electoral votes to Romney’s 206 much earlier than pundits had expected. When Ohio put him over the top just after 11 p.m., the president tweeted, “We are all in this together. That’s how we campaigned and that’s who we are.” At 1:37 a.m. when he took the stage before a cheering crowd at his campaign
headquarters in his hometown of Chicago, the president said the task of perfecting the union moves forward. “I return to the White House more determined and more inspired than ever about the work there is to do and the future that lies ahead,” he said. Obama, who is the nation’s first African-American president, said that we are an American family that will rise and fall together. He said he plans to meet with Romney in the weeks ahead to see how they can work together to move the country forward. “Tonight you voted for action, not politics as usual,” he said. “You elected us to focus on your jobs, not ours. And in the coming weeks and months, I am looking forward to reaching out and working with leaders of both parties to meet the challenges we can only solve together – reducing our deficit, reforming our tax code, fixing our immigration system, freeing ourselves from foreign oil. We have got more
work to do.” In conceding the election, Romney said this is a time of great challenges for America. “I pray the president will be successful in guiding our nation,” he said. DeKalb voters turned out in force to re-elect Obama. Turnout in the county was more than 73.3 percent, and Obama won the county with 77.6 percent or 237,704 votes. Statewide, Romney carried Georgia with 53.4 percent of the vote. Jennell Smith of Decatur was among the 161,025 DeKalb voters who cast ballots early. She said she voted for Obama again because she believes he has the people’s interest at heart. “He is really doing a great job given the circumstances around which he came into office,” Smith said. “Most of his first term, he was cleaning up Bush’s mess. I think he can benefit the country.” Barbara Thornton, a retired social worker from Decatur, said she has seen all the effort
that the president exerted over the past four years. “He has invested so much and I feel he deserves to continue and do what he wasn’t allowed to do the first four years,” she said. Eugene Wiley, 64, of Decatur said he voted again for Obama because he has a good heart. “His intentions are honorable, but there were those in Congress who oppose everything he does,” he said. “In a second term, he could get the economy back into shape.” Priscilla Armstrong, who owns Sweet Blessings Bakery in Decatur, voted for Obama. She said she believes that with another four years, the president could really make a difference. “I think he can help small businesses,” she said. “The job market is opening up and I think his policies will really help the middle class. If people are not working, they can’t support small businesses.”

“We didn’t think we were having the success we wanted to have with academics or job placement.”
Gassner is interim police chief Everest Institute to close at Wesley Chapel in December By Donna Williams Lewis
Everest Institute, which opened on Wesley Chapel Road in May 2009 with high hopes, is closing on Dec. 14. The technical school, owned by Santa Ana, Calif.-based Corinthian Colleges, opened in a former Walmart store that had been vacant for four years. Its arrival and $4 million investment in retrofitting the building was seen as a major boost for a corridor anxious for revitalization. Kent Jenkins, a Corinthian spokesman, said this week that the decision was made at the end of February to “teach out” the Decatur campus. “We didn’t think we were having the success we wanted to have with academics or job placement,” he said. Students were told the school would close after their ongoing programs were completed, and no new students were enrolled.
To meet accrediting standards of various agencies, Jenkins said that Everest’s academic programs need to match job markets, and that a certain percentage of students must graduate and obtain jobs. The school trained students in medical support careers and the trades. The Decatur location opened with 700 students. Figures on how many students the facility had at its peak and how they fared in the job market could not be obtained by press time. It was also unclear what would become of its 91,124-square-foot building, which was retrofitted to hold the 50,000-squarefoot school and a 36,500-square-foot retail space for tenants. Four other metro campuses remain in Jonesboro, Marietta, Norcross and southwest Atlanta. Corinthian Colleges operates career educational programs on 116 campuses in 26 states and in Canada.
Martial artist rape trial ends in mistrial, DA vows to retry Lithonia tae kwon do instructor Adrian Spellen’s legal troubles will continue. A DeKalb jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict in his trial for allegedly raping a 9-year-old girl, and on Nov. 5 Superior Court Judge Clarence Seeliger declared a mistrial after the jury foreman said they were deadlocked 10-2. During deliberations, a taped interview of the OUT K C E alleged victim describing CH ER UMM LS! what happened to her was S R U A O SPECI w TIMECoupons Belo played for jurors. See Spellen has said he is Adrian Spellen innocent of the charges, and during his testimony last week, he said the attacks never occurred. Prosecutors pointed out that he purchased liability insurance insuring himself against sexual abuse and child molestation charges after the alleged assaults occurred. Assistant District Attorney Dalia Racine told jurors he chose to purchase that coverage instead of insurance on the vans used to transport his students. “You’re making it seem as if I just went out and said, ‘Hey, let’s buy child molestation insurance,’” he said. “No, that’s not what I did.” DeKalb District Attorney Robert James says the hung jury allows him to try the case again. “We absolutely will try the case again,” James told Channel 2 News. Spellen, 28, is a former Olympic tae kwon do athlete for Guyana. He is charged with raping a girl who was a student at his Powerkicks Martial Arts studio in Lithonia in 2011. A DeKalb grand jury indicted him on three counts of rape and aggravated child molestation on July 26, 2011. The indictment accuses him of having “carnal knowledge of ” the girl between May 23 and June 3. Spellen has denied the charges. He has been in jail since April 9 when Seeliger revoked his bond after the alleged victim’s uncle said he spotted Spellen at the studio where children were present. At the time, Spellen was out of jail on a $100,000 bond and ordered not to have contact with children under the age of 16. Spellen was released Nov. 6 on a $50,000 bond until his retrial, jail records show.
DeKalb Assistant Police Chief Lisa Gassner has been named interim police chief in the wake of the retirement of Police Chief William O’Brien. O’Brien, 49, has been with the department for 30 years. He became police chief in 2010 after acting in the position for a year. Though he retires on Nov. 30, he had been away on leave. Lisa Gassner CEO Burrell Ellis, who announced Gassner’s appointment on Nov. 6, said she has served the department for more than 26 years. “She knows the organization from top to bottom,” Ellis said. “The department is in good hands as we make a smooth transition to a permanent replacement.”
Gassner will serve until a new police chief is hired. She was the county’s first female major and commanded the South Precinct. She joined the department in 1986 and has served in the Robbery/Homicide Unit, Narcotics and the Strike Force. She has supervised several divisions, including Criminal Investigations and Administrative/ Technical departments. When she served as a sniper, she was one of the first female officers to make the S.W.A.T. team. Under O’Brien’s administration, she was promoted to deputy chief and then assistant chief, commanding both the Special Operations Division and the Support Services Division. Gassner said this week that she has no interest in being the permanent police chief and does not plan to apply for the job, which pays $98,800 to $162,600 a year.

“I am asking all of my constituents to stand with me as we face new challenges. I am proud of my strong record.”
Democratic incumbents cruise to easy victories By Jennifer Ffrench Parker
Local Democrats and two statewide constitutional amendments sailed to easy victory during the Nov. 6 general election, but Chamblee’s attempt to annex another 2.5 square miles of the county failed. With most local races decided during the July 31 primaries and uncontested for the general election, only five Democrats – U.S. Reps. Hank Johnson and John Lewis, state Sen. Jason Carter, and state Reps. Michele Henson and Dar’shun Kendrick – faced Republican challengers. They all scored victories with 73 percent to 84 percent of the votes. In the 4th Congressional District, Johnson cruised to victory with 73.6 percent of the votes over Republican challenger J. Chris Vaughn. Johnson got 208,395 votes to Vaughn’s 74,909. Johnson said he is humbled by the support he has received from voters throughout his tenure. “I am asking all of my constituents to stand with me as we face new challenges,” he said. “I am proud of my strong record in Congress and look forward to continuing to work for the people of the 4th District for the next two years and beyond.” Lewis also won re-election easily, with 84.3 percent or 231,281 votes to Republican challenger Howard Stopeck’s 42,963 votes. Carter defeated Republican Kenneth Quarterman with 74 percent or 52,555 of the votes. Quarterman got 18,486 votes. In Georgia House districts 86 and 93, Henson and Kendrick defeated Republican challengers to retain their seats. Henson got 77.2 percent or 16,410 votes to Lisa Kinnemore’s 4,852. Kendrick won with 76.1 percent or 18,006 votes over C. “Tina” Hoffer’s 5,661 votes. The controversial Charter School Amendment won big, passing with 58.5 percent or 2,164,679 votes. In DeKalb, 64 percent or 187,326 people voted yes. The amendment will reinstate the Georgia Charter Commission, which will have authority to approve charter schools denied by local school boards. Amendment 2, which will give the state the authority to enter into multi-year rental agreements, won with 63.7 percent or 2,254,058 votes. DeKalb voters approved this amendment with 67.5 percent or 188,891 votes.
No to Chamblee annexation Chamblee’s annexation proposal was defeated by a slim margin of only 66 votes; 1,126 people – 51 percent – voted no, to 1,092 yes votes. It’s the first time in two years that municipal encroachment on DeKalb County’s unincorporated areas has been defeated by voters. If it had passed, it would have been the second large annexation for Chamblee in two years and would have taken about 2.5 square

“My daughter collects, my neighbors do too, even my best friend in Washington, D.C., clips for me,”
Moms seeking help raising box tops for Greenforest school By Stormy Kage
Not many people like to throw money away. At least that’s what Sherlonda Martin said when she and other members of the Greenforest McCalep Christian Academy Parent Teacher Organization teamed up to earn more than $3,000 worth of box tops for the Decatur school. She said that “throwing box tops in the trash is like throwing away cash.” “This is free money that could be used in our schools,” she said. Greenforest McCalep Academy, which was founded by Greenforest Baptist Church, has 500 students ages 6 weeks to 12th grade. Ten hard-working mothers formed a box top team, headed by Martin, who has three children attending the school, and began bringing in cash. In 2009, their first year, they got $79.40. By 2011, it had grown to $3,000. For this school year, the team is out to raise $10,000. “We call ourselves the Box Top Dream Team,” Martin said. Box Tops for Education is a program of General Mills in which schools can raise funds by trading in the box tops from 55 General Mills cereals like Cheerios, Lucky
Fund-raisers Mary Chatmon (from left), Rhonda Worthem, Ursala Maddox and Sherlonda Martin.
Charms, Fiber One and Total Raisin Brand for cash. Since its launch in 1996, the program has earned more than $340 million for schools that get 10 cents for each box top traded. Greenforest Academy PTO President Sheryl Crawford said they need help from the community to collect 100,000 box tops. Through October, the school has collected 18,500 and has 81,500 more to go. “We would like to get the word out so people can help,” she said. Because of their success with the program, Martin and three other mothers – Mary Chatmon, Rhonda Worthem and Ursala Maddox – are featured at http://www
.boxtops4education.com. Martin said the national recognition has inspired the students and parents as well as strangers. “We’ve even gotten box tops sent to us from people as far as Arizona,” Crawford said. The school’s Box Top Dream Team was called to speak at a local Box Top conference at which parents and teachers shared fundraising ideas with other schools. “It’s not just about the students at Greenforest McCalep Christian Academy, but about helping other children too,” Martin said. As incentives for students to participate, the PTO hosts pizza and ice cream parties,
movie nights, goodie bag prizes, and bubble parties for classrooms that bring in the most box tops. “This keeps it fun for them and gets everyone involved,” said Martin. “When the parents get excited, so do our kids.” All of the money earned from the program has gone to providing the school with better equipment like new computer systems and monitors. The PTO also wants to help provide projectors and school supplies for the children. Martin admits that she is passionate about box tops. “My daughter collects, my neighbors do too, even my best friend in Washington, D.C., clips for me,” she said. “It was funny this year, for my 44th birthday, she sent me a card with 44 box tops. She said, ‘There’s nothing I could have gotten you, Sherlonda, that would have made you happier than these box tops.’ She is right.” Martin is asking everyone who eats General Mills cereal to save and donate the box tops to their school instead of trashing them. Box tops can be dropped off or mailed to Greenforest McCalep Christian Academy, Attention: PTO Box Top Dream Team, 3250 Rainbow Drive, Decatur, GA 30034. For more information, call 678-4297533.

Fernbank physical science instructor Nathan Haeck said lean times and budget cuts offer the opportunity to innovate. “We knew that there simply wouldn’t be as much money for transporting students to the Science Center as previously, so we asked ourselves how we could reach the most kids with the least money,” he said, The brainstorming led to a partnership with the Porter Sanford Center, which hosted the third- and fourth-graders for the physical science demonstrations by Mary Breen and Haeck during the first week of October. The programs were so successful, Fernbank Science Center is negotiating a schedule of programs for next spring and looking to expand it to fifth-graders. In October, third-graders saw a program called “Hot Stuff,” which addresses their curriculum on heat. Fourthgraders sat in on the “Move It” program, which covers
Haeck said he heard lots of “oohs” and “aahs” from the students, and at least one student said expressed interest in becoming a scientist. Traditionally, Fernbank Science Center instructors reach students by visiting individual classrooms throughout the county or having the students ride buses to the Science Center for instruction. Instructors said the Porter Sanford Center was more accessible to many students, and the school buses used less fuel to get them there. Joyce Gamble, Fernbank’s assistant director, applauded the new partnership between the Science Center and DeKalb County Parks and Recreation and praised David Manuel, the Porter Sanford Center’s executive director, and Jackie Swain, the Parks Department’s special events coordinator, for their assistance. “We’re looking forward to a long and fruitful partnership,” she said. Arabia Mountain tour of history, culture and dramatic places An “Arabia Mountain Expedition” and bike tour on Nov. 17-18 will showcase the rich history and culture of Lithonia and the Arabia Mountain Heritage Area. On Nov. 17, participants can tour the homesteads of some of the area’s earliest settlers, discover relics of the granite quarrying industry while exploring the granite mountain, and learn about the area’s historic African-American community of Flat Rock. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Lithonia Woman’s Club, a building constructed in 1928 with local granite. Lithonia Mayor Deborah Jackson will greet guests and there will be a brief presentation about the Arabia Mountain Heritage Area’s natural and cultural history. Participants will have lunch at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, a religious community established in 1944 by Trappist monks who traveled from Kentucky to Conyers. While there, they will explore the 1960s Abbey Church, tour the new Monastic Center and Historic Museum, and see the bonsai nursery and gift shop. Father Methodius Telnack will give a short presentation and overview of the church. Stops include Rockdale County’s historic Smyrna Campground and Presbyterian Church that was established in 1827. It still hosts annual camp meetings that bring worshippers to the 30-acre campus, complete with historic cottages, tabernacle and cemetery. Participants will visit Arabia Mountain, a granite monadnock (isolated rock mountain) similar to Stone Mountain and Panola Mountain. It was owned and quarried by the Davidson family for much of the 20th century. The family donated it to DeKalb County in the 1970s as a nature preserve. Visitors will explore the mountain’s unique ecosystem and

see evidence of the area’s once thriving granite industry. A special closing reception will be held at the Housworth Homeplace, a restored cottage built in the 1890s by members of the Housworth family, one of the earliest families to settle in the area. In 2005, the cottage was sold through the nonprofit Georgia Trust’s revolving fund and rehabilitated. Participants will tour the house and its outbuildings before attending the closing reception in the barn and gardens. On Nov. 18, participants can opt to take part in the Arabia Mountain Expedition Bike Tour Challenge, a 24-mile guided bike tour that will begin in downtown Lithonia and
follow paved trails constructed by the PATH Foundation. Sites include the Lyon Plantation, Vaughtner’s Farm, Arabia Mountain and granite ruins. The two-day Arabia Mountain Expedition and bike tour is co-hosted by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and the Arabia Mountain Heritage Area Alliance and sponsored by Vulcan Materials Co. Georgia Trust members pay $35 and visitors, $40. The fee includes lunch and the closing reception. Sunday’s bike ride is $30. The cost for both days is $65. South DeKalb families can get farm-fresh produce for their Thanksgiving dinners on Nov. 17 at Saint Philip AME Church. An array of fresh-picked collards – whole and cut up, sweet potatoes, turnips and turnip greens, slender green beans, and vine-ripened tomatoes will be available from Radford Farms/Radford-Simmons Produce in Houston County. Radford Farms’ fresh produce truck will be at the church as part of its Community Development Corp.’s efforts to make fresh produce available in the Candler Road food desert. Eugene Radford said produce will come from his 40-acre family farm or from other black farmers in Haynesville. “What we don’t grow, we get from other farmers in the area,” he said. “We don’t grow everything, but we work with other farmers close by.” Radford grew up working on the farm

“Charter customers of the bank have been discovering that our name exemplifies our approach.”
Turner heads Private Bank of Decatur DeKalb property tax The Private Bank of Decatur has opened on Ponce de Leon Avenue in downtown Decatur with longtime Decatur banker Judy Turner at the helm. The branch opened on Oct. 22 at the One Decatur Town Center, offering high-touch hands-on banking to its customers as well as the latest in technology, like online and mobile deposit capabilities and smartphone apps that enable customers to view account balances, transfer funds and pay bills. “Charter customers of the bank have been discovering that our name exemplifies our approach,” Turner said. “We believe that all customers should benefit from the private banking approach other banks reserve for a certain few.” Turner touts perks like free ATM usage – the bank does not charge ATM fees of its own and refunds those that other institutions charge. The Decatur branch is the first expansion for the 7-year-old Private Bank of Buckhead. Turner, who once headed Decatur First Bank, has her signature popcorn machine in the lobby. Her team includes Melanie Funk and Jamie Ensley, who worked with her at Decatur First Bank; senior vice president and senior lending officer Greg Russell; personal bankers JoAnn Ellis and Juanita Marzette; and Greg Wood, who is credit portfolio manager. Turner said people with deep roots both personally and professionally in Decatur are on the team. “Many will be familiar to customers and are certainly familiar with the com-
