Marquel Byrd unloads donated turkeys and hams at the DeKalb County Jail for Hosea Feed the Hungry’s annual meal.

Lisa Lane has a lot to be thankful for this year. Just two years ago, she was unemployed and living in a hotel with her seven children. This year, she has a house in Decatur, a job at Kroger, and on Nov. 25, which is the national Thanksgiving holiday, she will have food on the table for her family. Lane is one of 60 families who will get a Thanksgiving box laden with a fresh turkey, ham and all the fixings from the Decatur Cooperative Ministry. The food was donated by DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis, Publix, Wayfield Foods,

HoneyBaked Ham and Feed the Hungry Foundation. She said the gift of food will help tremendously. “It will be a blessing to sit with my family and share a meal with them,” she said. Across the county, families who have faced extended unemployment and foreclosures are struggling to make ends meet, but this holiday, individuals, businesses, churches and community organizations are rising to the need. United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, which fields lots of calls from families in need, says numbers are up this year.

David Graves, the group’s director of media and marketing, said Thursday that they are seeing large numbers of families needing assistance with mortgage payments, rent and utility bills. He said their 211 call system fielded 331,000 calls through September this year. Last year for the entire 12 months, it got 381,297 calls. Graves said the calls this year are also different from previous years. “We’ve really been getting a lot of calls from middle-class families,” Graves said. “We normally get calls from those who are poor, but with the hit to the Please see THANKSGIVING, page 2

Santas’ arrivals herald start of shopping season By Jennifer Ffrench Parker

It’s that time of the year again. Santas are rolling into town this weekend at the Mall at Stonecrest and the Gallery at South DeKalb, and anticipation is high among retailers that this holiday shopping season will finally banish the blues of 2008, when sales plummeted to minus 3.9 percent. Donald Bieler, the Mall at Stonecrest’s marketing director, said national projections are for a 3 percent increase over 2009 sales. He says he is already seeing signs of a brisk shopping season. “People are already out shopping. We hope to meet and exceed that projection. Sales are already trending up and we are looking forward to a very prosperous season.” When the books closed on last year’s holiday shopping season, sales had increased only 0.04 percent from the previous downer year. Now everyone is hoping that one day soon, they will see a bumper year like 1999 when holiday sales peaked at an 8.1 percent increase. Tene Harris, the Gallery’s general manager, says they too want to better the national projection. “We are expecting to see more people

and that will translate into more sales for our tenants.” Mary Joyce Burdge, North DeKalb Mall’s marketing manager, says it’s shaping up to be a really good season. “Just judging from the parking lots, we are seeing more traffic than last year this time,” she said. To get shoppers in the spending mood, the malls are already decked out in their holiday finery and holiday jingles are already

playing in many stores. At Stonecrest, Santa Jack will be back in his workshop on the lower level in front of Sears starting at 10 a.m. on Nov. 20. He takes up residence after a parade with the Arabia Mountain High School Marching Rams Band and SpongeBob. This is Santa Jack’s 10th year at the Lithonia mall, which opened in October 2001. He will begin taking photos immediately after the parade. For one day only, SpongeBob will hold court every

30 minutes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the upper level. At the Gallery, Santa Dee arrives at 6 p.m. on Nov. 20 in a convertible to the music of the McNair High School Marching Mustangs. The parade will go from Conway Department Store to Macy’s before Santa settles in his big chair for his third season in the mall’s center court. North DeKalb’s Santa Hugh is starting his 27th year on Nov. 26 at 9 a.m.

economy a lot of people have been affected and we’ve seen a rise in assistance to middle-class families.” The state Department of Labor said the October unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.9 percent. Graves says that United Way’s Fresh Start Program, which was launched in June, has assisted 16,700 people between June and September. “The program was a part of the stimulus package from the American government, and we’ve spent $20.5 million assisting people with bills,” he said. Berean Christian Church is again partnering with local churches, businesses and families to distribute 1,200 boxes of food on Nov. 20 to needy families. They also plan to do it again for Christmas and hope to serve 2,010 families. The Thanksgiving giveaway takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will help families from DeKalb, Gwinnett and Rockdale counties. They will be served at the church’s DeKalb campus, 2201 Young Road in Stone Mountain, and in Gwinnett at 1465 Highpoint Road in Snellville. The Christmas giveaway for 800 families will take place on Dec. 18. Partners in the holiday giveaways include Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, Caring Hands, DeKalb County Office of Neighborhood Empowerment, First Afrikan Church, Goodwill of North Georgia, Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church, Overcomers Cathedral Tabernacle of Prayer, Partnership for Community Action, Publix, RBC Bank, Rain Outreach Ministries, Raising the Bar International, Shepherds House, SWIFT Transportation, Wal-Mart and DeKalb County schools. On Nov. 21, after its 11 a.m. worship service, Truth Tabernacle on 5268 Snapfinger Woods Drive in Decatur will give away Thanksgiving food baskets to DeKalb residents experiencing hard times. This year, Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless is expecting more than 40,000 adults and children at its 40th annual Thanksgiving dinner Thursday at Turner Field. Elisabeth Omilami, HFTH’s president, said they have seen a 128 percent increase in need.

DeKalb Sheriff Deputy Clyburn Halley hands out turkeys at the Lou Walker Center on Nov. 12.

On Nov. 18, during its annual “Great Turkey Drop Off,” the organization took deliveries of 1,000 turkeys and monetary donations from the DeKalb County Sheriff ’s Office, Aaron Rents, Harry Norman Realtors, Kroger, Publix and Sodexo to the DeKalb County Jail where volunteers will prepare the dinner. Omilami said the depressed economy has taken its toll on the poor and the middle class. “Because of the economy, people who were making $100,000 a year and giving to others for years are now in line asking for help,” she said. On Nov. 12, DeKalb Sheriff Thomas Brown and members of his staff and the Reserve Deputy Unit delivered turkeys to 50 seniors at the Lou Walker Senior Center in Lithonia for their second annual DeKalb Sheriff’s Turkey Trot. The donations were made possible with the help of Kroger, Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart, Costco, and HoneyBaked Ham. The department collected more than 50 turkeys and distributed them to members of the Senior Center. Brown said times are hard. “We want to bless those who are in need.” Mary Woodard of Ellenwood said the turkey giveaway was a blessing. “I don’t have to worry about buying a turkey this year,” she said.

Early voting begins Nov. 22 for the DeKalb Superior Court bench and District 7 School Board race. Former senior Assistant District Attorney Courtney Johnson is facing Decatur attorney Michael Rothenberg for the seat being vacated by Judge Robert Castellani. In the Nov. 2 general election, Johnson got 36.7 percent of the vote. Rothenberg got 26.1 percent. Johnson has since secured the endorsements of the other two contenders, Yvonne Hawks and Denise Warner. If elected, she will be the fifth woman and the sixth AfricanAmerican on the 10-member bench. In the School Board race, accountant Donna Edler is seeking to unseat two-term incumbent Zepora Roberts, who was filmed threatening to slug a television reporter who was trying to ask her a question about her daughters’ jobs with the school district. In the four-person race in the Nov. 2 election, Roberts got 37.4 percent of the vote and Edler, 30.7 percent. There are also runoffs for the Georgia Supreme Court and for the Court of Appeals. Early voting takes place weekdays through Nov. 24 at the DeKalb Election Office, 4380 Memorial Drive in Decatur. On election day on Nov. 30, all precincts will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call 404-298-4020.

Man arrested in girl’s death Michael Smith of Stone Mountain was arrested Nov. 2 in connection with the death of 15-year-old Shayla Jackson in September. The DeKalb Sheriff ’s Office arrested Smith, 20, and charged him with murder in Shayla’s death on Sept. 23 and with two counts of armed robbery in two incidents committed earlier that day. He also is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and a Michael Smith probation violation. Smith allegedly robbed a home in the Klondike Road area and during the robbery stole a shotgun. After the robbery, he allegedly shot Shayla in the stomach. She later died from her injuries. Smith was arrested at the intersection of Glenwood Road and I-285 after a brief foot pursuit.

“You don’t have to worry about being stuck behind a bus anymore. The bus is constantly sending signals and at each intersection, the traffic lights know it is coming.”

Q buses shave time off rush hour commute Not guilty plea By Jennifer Ffrench Parker

Stone Mountain commuters can trim up to 12 minutes off their rush-hour trips on Memorial Drive if they use MARTA’s new Bus Rapid Transit Service from the new Goldsmith Road park-and-ride lot to the Kensington MARTA station. The service employs advanced transportation technology that gives priority to the 10 MARTA Q Express buses that service Route 521. It is the state’s first BRT service and was installed at a cost of $26.7 million. Peggy Allen, DeKalb’s transportation manager, said they are using Global Positioning System technology to locate the buses equipped with Traffic Signal Priority signals that can extend a green light by three to five seconds or speed up the rotation of a red traffic light to get through intersections. “You don’t have to worry about being stuck behind a bus anymore. The bus is constantly sending signals and at each intersection, the traffic lights know it is coming.” At a Nov. 17 ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Kensington station, officials from the transit system, DeKalb County government, Georgia Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration praised the project and its technology. “This is a huge initiative to move people, not cars,” said DOT Deputy Commissioner Gerald Ross. DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis said DeKalb is proud to partner with MARTA to pioneer the regionally significant project. He said county participation shows that they are committed to reducing travel time for residents. “Our engineers are utilizing cutting-edge technology and the queue jumper lanes are the first to be used in this part of the

country.” The $26.7 million price tag for the service included $21 million for infrastructure – the construction of dedicated bus lanes and bus shelters; $4.9 million for 10 buses; and $750,000 for the signal technology. The Federal Transit Administration provided an 80 percent grant to implement service and fund operations for three years. Annual operation is estimated at $864,300. MARTA, DOT and DeKalb planned, designed and constructed the project. MARTA’s general manager, Dr. Beverly Scott, said they are making it easier for people to use public transit. “For $2 each way, you can have a quick, convenient ride during rush hour,” she said. “There is no longer any need to sit in traffic. If you use this service, you will wind up having an advantage in your travel time.” The new BRT service includes the Q Express (Route 521) and Q Limited (Route

520) that runs between the Kensington rail station and the 150-car park-and-ride lot at the intersection of Goldsmith Road and Memorial Drive. The Q Limited offers customers stops at four locations north along Memorial Drive and branching off at North Hairston Road on the way to East Ponce de Leon Avenue. Both routes operate weekdays 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Local bus Route 121 still provides regular service to stops along Memorial Drive but less frequently. LaVoise Magee, MARTA’s director of bus transportation, said the service has been running since Sept. 27 but utilization has been low because it had not been publicized outside of handing out flyers at the rail station. ”We have had about 20 passengers per trip. We are averaging 15 to 20 cars a day at the park-and-ride.” Magee said he’s hoping more people will hear about the service and use it.

Twyann Artrell Vaughn, whose pit bulls attacked and maimed 8-year-old Erin Ingram in March, is expected back in court on Dec. 16. Vaughn pleaded not guilty to reckless conduct and failure to vaccinate her dogs on Nov. 16 in DeKalb State Court. Erin, who was in third grade at the time Twyann Vaughn of the incident, was attacked by Vaughn’s two dogs while playing outside her home in a subdivision off Union Grove Church Road in Lithonia. While leaving court, Vaughn, who lived on the same street as the girl, told a WSB-TV reporter that she was sorry for the attack. “I am just very, very sorry that it all happened and I just want to express that to the family. I hope Erin is doing well, I really do. My prayers are with her every single night.” A police officer had to shoot one dog to make him let go of the child’s arm. The other dog ran home and was later euthanized by DeKalb animal control. Erin lost part of her left arm and has serious scarring all over her body. Kevin Adamson, the family’s attorney, said Erin is back in school and doing much better but is still having some issues. “She’s having nightmares; she is scared of dogs and afraid to go outside.” Nicole Marchand, acting solicitor general, said Vaughn asked Judge Dax Lopez for time to hire an attorney. Then she asked if she could apply to be represented by a public defender instead.

When taking part in a holiday meal, remember that food is only part of the gathering.

Lighten up that plate with food that’s low in fat, high in fiber

+0*/5 40-65*0/4 $&/5&3

A typical Thanksgiving dinner contains 1,200 calories for the single meal, but modifying the menu can reduce the calorie burden. Dena McDowell, nutrition expert for TOPS – Take Off Pounds Sensibly – says that including recipes that are lower in fat and higher in fiber and adding physical activity can lighten the load. Dena McDowell McDowell says that we can keep weight gain to a minimum throughout the holiday season by practicing portion control, substituting skinless white meat turkey for high-calorie and high-fat dark meat, loading half of our plates with vegetables and fruit to reduce the calories of the meal, using a 9-inch plate, and waiting 20 to 30 minutes before deciding on a second helping. If you are still hungry, choose a small helping of a fruit or vegetable with a glass of water. She said that preparing low-fat and higher-fiber recipe alternatives is another way to lighten the holiday meal. “For example, in recipes such as green bean casserole, use reduced-fat cream of mushroom soup and low-fat milk to reduce the calories and fat content of the dish substantially,â€? she said. The fat and calories saved by substituting traditional recipes with makeover recipes are substantial. For example, with the traditional menu of a dark meat turkey dinner with green bean casserole, corn soufflĂŠ, stuffing, cranberry sauce and apple pie, a person will take in 1,262 calories and 44 grams of fat. Using the modified, lighter versions of recipes reduces the calories to 778 and fat to 24 grams – a

If the pie has a double crust, she recommends skipping it because it will have more calories and fat. When taking part in a holiday meal, remember that food is only part of the gathering. Making the meal a secondary aspect of the celebration can help. Other suggestions for a healthier holiday include: n Aim to spend quality time with friends and relatives. n Offer to bring a low-calorie menu option. n Slow down and enjoy the meal. n Encourage everyone to get up and get active to burn those unwanted calories. Cranberries are a good source of vitamin C and other antioxidants, with up to five times the amount of antioxidants found in broccoli.

Fresh cranberry sauce is fast and nutritious Eating Healthy Life Chef Asata Reid

The most festive Thanksgiving table looks barren without the gorgeous jewel tones of cranberry sauce. There are two camps of cranberry sauce connoisseurs – those who love the jelled cylinder from the can and those who love the homemade version made of boiled sweet cranberries. Like most canned products, canned cranberry sauce is not always what it seems, as gelatin is often used in commercially canned cranberry sauce, making the side dish inappropriate for vegetarians. Homemade cranberry sauce is so fast and delicious that unless you are a die-hard canned fan, you should give it a try. Fresh cranberry sauce involves no cutting, little stirring, and basically takes care of itself in 15 minutes. Cranberries are a native American berry in season October through December in the northern part of the United States. Cousins to blueberries, they have a host of health benefits that may persuade you to eat them more often than on Thanksgiving Day. Numerous studies have been published that cite cranberries’ effectiveness in preventing bacterial urinary tract infections. Drinking unsweetened cranberry juice acidifies the urine, and cranberries have a specific tannin (which also gives them their famous pucker factor) that reduces the ability of E. coli, the pathogen reportedly responsible for 80 percent to 90 percent of bladder and urinary tract infections, from adhering to the walls

Here’s my fast and flavorful cranberry sauce that cooks up in a flash and makes a great condiment to any roasted meats, and it even works great as a spread on a sandwich. The marmalade brings sweetness to the sauce without it becoming cloying and also provides natural fruit pectin so that the sauce thickens quickly. 1 bag fresh cranberries (found in the produce department) ¼ cup all-natural orange marmalade (such as Simply Fruit) 1 stick cinnamon, broken in half Pinch of ground cloves ¼ cup orange juice (more if needed during cooking)

as cancer, coronary disease and even arthritis. Cranberries have been reported to help prevent kidney stones, decrease LDL or “bad” cholesterol levels, improve overall cardiovascular health, and act in an antiviral capacity.

Healthy habits can help keep family on track The traditional Thanksgiving feast can contribute to unhealthy eating habits, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta wants to help keep you and your family on track for many more happy holidays. Forming healthy family habits is important as Georgia faces an epidemic of childhood obesity. The Atlanta hospital says that family influence plays a strikingly large role in childhood obesity – children with an obese parent are 50 percent more likely to be obese themselves. To keep Thanksgiving from becoming “Thanksgaining,” Children’s advises: n Leading up to Thanksgiving, encourage your family to spend one less hour in front of the TV and one more hour of physical activity per day. n Eat a light, healthy snack before sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner to decrease your appetite. n Serve water with your meal instead of sugary beverages. n Provide fruit and vegetable platters as healthy alternatives to more fattening appetizers. n Encourage your family to fill at least half of their plates with fruits and vegetables. White meat turkey is also a great source of lean protein. n Enjoy a family game of touch football instead of watching the games on TV. n Take a family walk after your meal. n Remember that parents serve as role models for their children, so make sure your actions are ones that you would want your children to follow. Former CrossRoadsNews columnist Al Wiseman has unleashed his funny side in an aptly named book, “Finding the Funny.” The book, published this week, includes many pieces that first saw print in his CrossRoadsNews “Laugh Lines” column between January 2003 and May 2005. A self-described Toastmasters junkie, Wiseman, who labels himself a “motivational humorologist,” discovered his love and talent for writing and public speaking when he joined the public speaking organization in 1993. Fans will find much to chuckle about in “Finding the Funny,” including favorite columns like “Miss Bessie, the Hoopty,” “The January Blues,” and “Grow Yo Fro, Bro’,” along with other humorous stories and speeches that Wiseman wrote and has performed during his years in Toastmasters. Wiseman says that, as a kid, humor became his armor from the neighborhood tough guys. 1/4 TABLOID – 5.25”w x 5.5”h

Thanksgiving tradition The Lithonia churches are holding their annual Community Worship Service on Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. at First Afrikan Presbyterian Church. The churches, which are located within a mile of each other, have co-hosted the annual worship service the Tuesday before Thanksgiving for more than 16 years. Ousley UMC’s pastor, the Rev. McCallister Hollins, will preach and the Big Miller Grove Choir will perform. First Afrikan Church is at 5197 Salem Road in Lithonia. For more information, call 770-981-2601.

“I was always the class clown and a master at playing the dozens,” he says. “Growing up in the inner city of Detroit, my sense of humor set me apart and also helped keep the bullies off my behind because I could make them laugh.” That humor helped him “crack up” the audience in the 2002 Toastmasters Humorous Speech Contest, which he won. Wiseman, who lives in Stone Mountain, hasn’t looked back since. He says all the stories in “Finding the Funny” are based on real events. “I don’t have to make up this stuff,” Wiseman says. “Good and bad stuff happens to all of us every day. I believe that one of the best ways to maintain your sanity in life is to find the funny in what happens to you.” “Finding the Funny” is self-published by Tucker-based Wise Guy Publishing. “I am a family-oriented person. It’s my first time away. I miss my family. I miss my dogs.”

Debate team seeks funds for trip By Carla Parker

Staff Sgt. Leticia Mitchell, a Lithonia native stationed in Iraq, will be spending her first holiday away from family. She is a 2004 graduate of Lithonia High School.

Soldier missing holiday at home By Jennifer Ffrench Parker

When Staff Sgt. Leticia Mitchell’s family gathers in Lithonia for Thanksgiving on Thursday, she won’t be there. She also won’t be with fiancé Conte’ Stanley’s family in Macon. Instead, Mitchell, 25, will be halfway across the world in Talli, Iraq, where she has been stationed since February with the 110th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 224th Sustainment Brigade, 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary). This week, Mitchell, who is on her first overseas deployment, put a brave face on the separation from her family. “This is my career and I love it,” she said. “I will be fine. This is what I have to do.” Still she admitted being homesick. “I am a family-oriented person,” she said. “It’s my first time away. I miss my family. I miss my dogs.” Her mother, Annette Robertson, who lives in Lithonia, is taking care of the dogs – Bear, a Shih Tzu, and Munosh, a Chinese Shar-Pei. Mitchell and fellow soldiers will have turkey and all the trimmings, but of course it won’t taste like Mama’s. Last Thanksgiving when she was in the United States, Mitchell had Thanksgiving dinner with her fiancé’s family. “There were about 50 people there,” she recalled. “It was loud, and children running everywhere. I started eating when the cooking started. We got together at 5 p.m. and it lasted until well after midnight.” Stanley said they are already missing her. “We have been dating for three years and she always goes home with me,” he said. “My

mother is already asking about her.” Stanley, a staff sergeant, has been in the Army for 16 years. He spent a year in Baghdad in 2005 and knows how difficult the holidays away from home can be. “It’s pretty rough,” he said. “That is why every time she calls I try to answer the phone. I also send her cards to let her know that we are thinking of her.” The two also talk daily by e-mail and telephone and on the weekend by Skype, where they can see each other, Mitchell said both of her parents are retired Marines but that they didn’t push her to enlist. “It was just something that I wanted to do,” she said. She joined ROTC in her sophomore year and followed up by enlisting in her junior year. By the time she graduated from Lithonia High School in 2004, she already had a year in the Army. “I was doing one weekend a month drill at Fort Gillem,” she said. After graduation in May, she went to basic training in Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. She studied forensic pathology in college and now works in mortuary affairs in the Army, doing autopsy on fallen soldiers and preparing their bodies for the journey home. She said the movie “Taking Chance” starring Kevin Bacon is a realistic and vivid portrayal of what she does. “I am able to give back to the soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice,” she said. “When they are being transported, we ensure that they are transported with dignity and respect. I try to make everything perfect.”

The Southwest DeKalb High School Debate Team has been on a winning streak, but cash is standing between them and a January debate tournament in North Carolina. So far this year, the 16-member team has captured three first-place wins, placing in the top eight in six local debate tournaments. Members are trying to raise money to travel to Charlotte to compete in the 43rd annual Laird Lewis Invitational on Jan. 7-9, 2011. Reginald Grimes, the team’s president, said this week they need $1,700 to cover transportation, hotel stay, and food. “I feel that our team has made a statement this year, especially when it comes to black debaters,” said Grimes, a senior at the Decatur school. “I would have to make the bold statement that after our performances this year our team is the best black debate team in Georgia.”

Grimes said he would hate to have to tell his team members that they can’t participate in the Laird Lewis Invitational because they don’t have the funds. “We’re asking teachers, businesses, and everyone to help us raise the money,” he said. Kristina Parrish, the history and world geography teacher who coaches the team, said money has kept the team from participating in out-of-town tournaments before. “Some of the team members were invited to compete in nationals the past two years but couldn’t go because of lack of funds,” she said. “The team has been doing exceptionally well this year in the local tournaments, so the tournament in North Carolina will give them more of a challenge.” The team will be taking donations – cash or money orders – through Jan. 4. Donations can be sent to Southwest DeKalb High School at 2863 Kelley Chapel Road in Decatur. For more information, call Kristina Parrish at 770-377-5339.
