Sign sweep sends 1.2 tons of illegal signs to the dump By Ken Watts
Illegal signs were removed from public rights of way and utility and street sign poles along Memorial Drive (at left); LaVista, Turner Hill, Gresham, Fairington and Panola roads; and Columbia Drive on Sept. 19 by volunteers and Code Enforcement officers.
On Saturday, volunteers met in the parking lots of Sam’s Club at Stonecrest; the Walmarts on Gresham and Fairington roads and Columbia and Memorial drives; and Northlake Mall. They fanned out along Turner Hill Road, Gresham, Fairington and Panola Road, Columbia and Memorial, LaVista Road, and other streets for three hours, pulling up the signs from the public rights of way, removing them from utility and street sign poles, and dropping them in county pickup trucks for the trip to the landfill in Ellenwood. Stone Mountain resident Joe Arrington, who was among volunteers, said he’s been pulling up illegal signs for years and is
More than 1.2 tons of illegal signs are headed to the Seminole Landfill. The signs promoting everything from businesses, the sale of junk cars, yard sales and job fairs to homes for rent and for sale were removed from the streets of South DeKalb by more than 50 volunteers from homeowners associations, civic and community groups, and DeKalb Code Enforcement officers on Sept. 19. The effort was part of the national “Sick of Signs” effort battling the proliferation of illegal signs that add to community blight. In 2013, the sweep removed 1,600 signs, or 1.43 tons. William ‘Buck’ Godfrey Stadium now official Retired educator is first DeKalb coach honored By Ken Watts
William “Buck” Godfrey, DeKalb County’s “winningest coach” and “molder of men,” now has a stadium named for him. The DeKalb School System dedicated the William “Buck” Godfrey Stadium in Decatur on Sept. 19 in honor of the retired football coach, English teacher, and author who inspired his players to seek academic excellence. More than 150 Southwest DeKalb High students, friends, relatives, former players and principal; School Board Chairman Melvin Johnson; and alumni attended the ceremony that renamed the 8,500-seat Panthersville Stadium on Clifton Springs Road in honor of Godfrey. It took place before the Sept. 19 football game between old rivals Southwest DeKalb Panthers and Atlanta’s Benjamin E. Mays High Raiders. School officials unveiled Godfrey’s name emblazoned on the 27-foot scoreboard. After a $3 million renovation that gets under way this winter, Godfrey’s name also will be installed on the outside wall of the stadium. He is the first coach in the School District to be so honored. Godfrey said the honor made him feel “truly loved by the community.” “It’s an amazing thing,” he said. “God gives you a purpose and you put everything into it. If it turns out right, all the honor and glory goes to him. I also think the fans share this honor. If they hadn’t turned out to support us on all those Friday nights, this wouldn’t be happening.” The decision to name the stadium at 2817 Clifton Springs Road in honor of Godfrey was approved unanimously by the DeKalb School Board on April 1.

Retired Southwest DeKalb High football coach William “Buck” Godfrey hugs his granddaughter Bailey Smith in front of the scoreboard bearing his name at the former Panthersville Stadium.
Horace Dunson, the School District’s executive director of athletics, said the approval was a “home run” and generations of students will call Godfrey’s name. “Thirty years from now, students will be calling his name and asking, who is ‘Coach Godfrey?’” Dunson said. “He made a remarkable contribution beyond his coaching. It’s a win-win situation to have a school property named for someone who did so much and is so widely recognized.” During a coaching career that spanned
As well-wishers crowded him Saturday to offer congratulations, Godfrey said it felt strange to be on the field again and not coaching. Family was a recurring theme of the emotional dedication ceremony. Godfrey, surrounded by his wife of 45 years, Joyce, and grandchildren – Morgan, 5; Bailey, 8; Gabby, 7; and Carter, 6 – listened to former players and others thank him for his positive influence in their lives. Former players spoke of how he treated them like sons and opened their eyes to much more than sports. Seven of his players went on to NFL careers. One of them, receiver Danny Buggs, gave the invocation for the dedication ceremony. “We give you thanks for this man of vision who came and did what no other coach had ever done before,” Buggs said in his opening prayer. Clemente Gordon, a starting SWD quarterback in 1984 who went on to play college ball at Grambling State University and for several teams in the Arena Football League, said he admired Godfrey’s personal values. “He showed me a strong family structure when I came to Southwest DeKalb,” said Gordon, now a successful family and business man. “That was important for me coming from a single-parent home.” Well-wishers included fellow coach Ray Bonner and Johnson, DeKalb School Board chairman. In his remarks, Godfrey called on his audience to save young black males. “We lost our boys when we stopped calling them sons,” Godfrey said. “The only way we’re going to get them back is give a better choice than the gangs.” The Godfrey Stadium, built in 1968, is slated for extensive renovations. The district’s request for proposals to do the renovations opened Aug. 20 and will close Oct. 6. Dunson said Thursday that several firms already have submitted proposals. The work will involve installing artificial turf, a new track, fencing, lighting and electrical wirings.
three decades years, Godfrey and his teams played more than 150 games at Panthersville Stadium. Not once did it occur to him that his name could one day grace the structure or the stadium. Godfrey retired from Southwest DeKalb High in February 2013 after 34 years with the DeKalb School District. “The impact of body-worn cameras touches on outcomes that build upon efforts to mend the fabric of trust, respect and common purpose.”
Suspects jailed Newton Sheriff Office lands grant for body cameras in cop shooting By Ken Watts
Two men suspected in the shooting of DeKalb Police Officer Marco Vizcarrando are in jail charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and felony obstruction. Rome Crowe, 21, and Isaiah McCray, 24, were captured Sept. 18 after Marco Vizcarrando running away from the scene of the shooting on Northlake Parkway in Tucker. Police say the two shot Vizcarrando, 47, in the shoulder after a chase that ended in a car crash at the RaceTrac on Northlake Rome Crowe Parkway, and the men jumped out of the car after the crash and fired shots at officers. Crowe was arrested outside the RaceTrac and officers recovered a firearm. McCray was tracked by police K9 and taken into custody on Robinhill Isaiah McCray Drive. Neither suspect sustained significant injuries. Vizcarrando, a 19-year member of the police force, was flown by police helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a shoulder wound and released on Sept. 18. Investigators said the incident began when a police officer attempted a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet SUV on Northlake Parkway. The investigation is ongoing.
Seventy-three police agencies nationally, including the Newton County Sheriff ’s Office, will get more than $23.2 million in grants to expand the use of body-worn cameras and explore their impact. U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced the awards in Washington on Sept. 21. She said the funding is part of President Barack Obama’s “commitment to building trust and transparency between law enforcement and the communities they serve.” The Newton Sheriff’s Office is among three agencies in Georgia that will receive 2015 grants totaling $167,722. Its $89,199 grant is the largest. The St. Marys Police Department in St. Marys and the Wilkinson County Police Department in Irwinton got $69,000 and $9,523, respectively. The three Georgia agencies were among 285 applications. The body-worn camera pilot program, first announced in May, includes $19.3 million to purchase the cameras, $2 million for training and technical assistance, and $1.9 million to examine the impact of their use. The grants will come from the department’s Office of Justice Programs. They build on the president’s proposal to purchase 50,000 body-worn cameras for law enforcement agencies within three years.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is among three agencies in Georgia receiving grants totaling $167,722 to expand the use of body-worn cameras.
Lynch said the pilot program will assist local jurisdictions that are interested in exploring and expanding the use of the cameras in order to enhance transparency, accountability and credibility. “The impact of body-worn cameras touches on a range of outcomes that build upon efforts to mend the fabric of trust, respect and common purpose that all communities need to thrive,” she said. The grants require a 50/50 in-kind or cash match and can be used to purchase equipment. It requires that applicants establish a strong implementation plan and a robust training policy before purchasing cameras. Each agency awarded a grant is responsible for developing a plan for long-term storage, including the cost of storing data.

The African Children’s Choir will perform on Oct. 2 at the Lovett School in Atlanta, followed by a screening of the award-winning documentary “Imba Means Sing.” The program, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Alston Memorial Chapel, features well-loved children’s songs, traditional spirituals and gospel favorites. It is free and open to the public. Music for Life, the choir’s parent organization, works in seven African countries – Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa. It has educated more than 52,000 children and impacted the lives of over 100,000 people through its relief and development programs. The documentary follows the journey of Angel, Moses and Nina – three children growing up in the slums of Uganda who are unable to afford a basic education. They get the once-ina-lifetime opportunity to tour the world with the Grammy-nominated African Children’s Choir, raising support to put themselves through college.
Prospective members and DeKalb County employees will get a chance to tour the Lou Walker Senior Center and meet its instructors at a Sept. 29 open house, part of the center’s celebration of National Senior Center Month. There will be a sneak peek of swim aerobics, volleyball, tai chi and Zumba at 5 p.m. Membership is restricted to DeKalb seniors and Silver Sneakers members over 55. Upcoming events, which are open to the public, include Showdown With Motown at 2

The film, which is directed by Lovett alum Danielle Bernstein (2002), features “Nashville” star Connie Britton, “Spy Kids” star Carla Gugino, country legend Big Kenny, and children’s music celebrity Randall Goodgame. The screening is part of “Imba Means Sing’s” campaign to move people to act for education as a human right globally and provide better access to music education programs locally. Bernstein will take questions from the audience after the screening. The school is at 4075 Paces Ferry Road. For more information, visit www. lovett.org or call 404-262-3032.
