olkswagen vans really hit the nostalgia button for me. Once you’ve owned a VW van, it becomes an identity issue. You don’t own a van, it owns you! My husband, Don, and I bought a 1987 Westfalia camper after we moved to Stuttgart, Germany, with our two little boys. That camper was our ticket to adventure. Life in Europe was a gift, and our van gave us affordable travel and the greatest memories. When we moved back to California (with the van), we continued our travels all over the western United States following American history and exploring natural wonders. The van lived a busy life in Coronado, too. It drove kids to soccer, dogs to the beach and Home Front judges around town to pick the top gardens. It also participated in parades, transported plants and even took Olympic athletes to the airport. Writer Samantha Bey shares other 4

Coronado VW van owners’ fun stories of being in this exclusive club. February is a great time to start thinking about spring cleaning and home improvement. We looked in on local interior designers and asked them to give us some of their favorite design choices. John Weisbarth, CHS Class of ’94 and co-host of the popular show Tiny House Nation, shares the philosophy of the tiny-house movement. We also chat with longtime Coronado architect Dorothy Howard about her work and plans for retirement. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we interviewed four Coronado couples who work together in their businesses, and they shared their words of wisdom on how to keep their lives at home and work harmonious. We hope you enjoy our February issue. Leslie Crawford, Editor Crown City Magazine

The Magic Bus VW vans still filled with good vibrations B y SAMANTHA BEY

ave Gillingham’s bright yellow 1973 Volkswagen bus is so pristine and shiny that strangers often knock on his door asking to peek inside the iconic vehicle. They would never know that when Gillingham bought it 20 years ago, it was a rusted-out frame that was used as a chicken coop in Victorville. As he towed his purchase home to Coronado, years of accumulated chicken manure flew out the back. All’s well that ends well, however. “It was all cleaned out by the time I got home!” he said, laughing. Gillingham has restored 10 buses since then, many for friends as a hobby. Years ago, Gillingham found a VW sunroof bus for sale in the Los Angeles area that had sustained a small engine fire. At the time, his neighbor, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church’s former minister Neal Keller had been
wanting a bus for his frequent surfing trips. Gillingham purchased and restored the bus and gifted it to the church. In turn, the church gave it to Keller for his retirement. Gillingham restored another bus for a friend whose condo association was starting to make noise about the “rust bucket” he always parked outside. And then there was the 1967, 21-window rag top bus he restored and sold during the recession for about $30,000. Had he held on to that model, it would be worth more than $100,000 today. Still, that first chicken coop find is his favorite. “It’s not the rarest one out there, but it’s the best combination of being drivable and cool,” he said. “It’s my island car.” He doesn’t take it outside of San Diego, but he loves driving it around the island and taking his dogs to the dog park. “As you drive down the street, people wave and smile,” he said.
These are some of the vintage VW vans that can regularly be seen cruising around Coronado.

Daniel Perwich stands next to his green 1971 VW van that has driven a bride to her wedding and has been a limo for his daughter and her friends’ prom night. The Berta family loves hanging out in their VW, whether it’s on a trip to the beach or having neighborhood kids over to use it as a playhouse.
Daniel Perwich, who owns a 1971 and a 1976 bus, agrees: “Everybody treats you and your ride with such peace and mellowness. They don’t expect you to go fast – they respect the vibe,” he said. His 1971 green bus, emblazoned on the rear window with “Do Right and Fear Not” was his first bus purchase 20 years ago. He bought it for $3,750 from the original owner, who had also paid $3,750 for it. He put in more than $10,000 for a full restoration and impeccable customization. It was a job so well done that he often looks out his window to see people posing for pictures in front of it.
One day, a bride-to-be knocked on his door and said it had always been her dream to arrive at her wedding in a VW bus. In an epically cool way, Perwich loaned it to the total strangers, and the woman’s fiancé drove them to and from their beach wedding. The glitzed-out green bus also served as a limo, escorting Perwich’s daughter and her friends to their high school prom. And every spring, the Coronado Garden Club judges drive it around to assess the home fronts before the Coronado Flower Show. The plan was to use the bus for surfing. But when he

started taking Keller (who clearly liked the VW vibe) surfing three times a week, Keller’s habit of riding home in his wetsuit on the customized seats made Perwich think about getting another bus that could withstand water and sand. So, he bought a 1976 red bus, which he now refers to as the “surf wagon.” When local surf enthusiast Bart Albin was 2, his parents bought a 1981 VW Vanagon, which was the family car until he turned 18 and got it for himself. He drove it until he was 22, when it caught fire and blew up on the side of the freeway

on his way to Los Angeles. Eight years ago, he bought a rusty, blue-and-white 1971 Bay Window Transporter in Orange County and drove it home in the dark with one headlight. He had it restored, hung curtains and even hand-painted the inside, creating a classic surf mobile for himself and his son, who named it Zozo. Albin and his son and two daughters take it camping at San Elijo State Beach in Cardiff and, of course, on surf trips. “She just invokes a happy feeling,” Albin said about Zozo.

“People are always stopping to talk about her or giving me a thumbs-up as I drive by.” And for Corey Berta, who runs the Coronado Surf Academy and teaches surf lessons, what better work vehicle than a 1982 VW Vanagon? He got the bus a few years ago from a friend who no longer had a use for it. He now piles the family in for days at the beach. And his kids and neighbors’ kids use it as a playhouse, spending hours climbing around the inside and imagining they’re off on terrific adventures. Jeanne Schnese knows well the

childhood joy of playing in a VW bus. Growing up in Long Island, New York, she would play endlessly in the back of her parents’ 1960 blue bus. “I even remember being in a little playpen in the back before the time of seatbelts,” she reminisced. Her family would take the bus on road trips to Florida, and her time spent in that vehicle are some of her happiest childhood memories. When she hit some hard times three years ago, she decided to shift her focus away from her troubles and dive into researching VW buses. “It became sort of an obsession,” she said. One day, she told her husband to pack up their 4-year-old son so they could drive to Santa Rosa to pick up a 1988 Vanagon Camper she had made a deposit on. He was on board, and they bought the camper. At points on the ride home, they were without taillights, a headlight and found themselves slowing to a hazardous uphill crawl in a rainstorm. “One thing broke after another, and that’s what it’s been like ever since,” she said laughing. “But I still really love her.” Schnese’s husband suggested they name the bus Mistake, but Schnese argued she wasn’t a mistake but just misunderstood. She also thought of it as mystical and also a bit of a mystery, so they named it Missy. Schnese, who describes herself as a very financially practical person, said buying the bus was the only irresponsible financial decision she’s ever made, but she wouldn’t change a thing. “She’s a complete money pit, but she just makes me really happy,” Schnese said. “I’m happy when I’m

der, Colorado, loved that simple life. They bought a 1987 blue Westfalia Vanagon in 1988 and, according to Steiner, were “total hippies who traveled the country non-stop.” Whenever he visited, he played in what he thought of as the “Swiss Army knife car.” Between the kitch-
en, bed, pantry and a little hang out area, it just had so much going on, he said. “It was like a hotel room on wheels.” As his aunt and uncle grew older and slowed down, they knew that Steiner and his wife and two young sons could breathe new life into the CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM

His aunt had washed it and outfitted it with supplies, including plates and silverware, so the van could continue traveling the country. And continued to travel it has. Steiner and his family have driven all over the United States. Since the three-day trip home from Colorado four years ago, they’ve visited Michigan; North Dakota; Moab, Utah; the Grand Canyon; the sunflower fields, Mount Rushmore and the badlands of South Dakota; as well as the backroads of Iowa and Nebraska (not to mention numerous local soccer

Through it all, Steiner has kept Westie in original condition. “We’ve learned that you can’t do the mountains in the winter, and with no AC, you can’t do Arizona in the summer. But you just find your adventures as they come,” Steiner said. The van, he said, brings out the “inner hippie” in his wife, Amy. He explained that she immediately gets settled and calm in the old VW. “It takes a special mindset to drive these cars,” Steiner said. “You learn to slow down. orothy Howard is just starting the design work on her latest residential project. But this one will be different. It will be the last set of drawings she will create before retiring from an architecture career that has spanned more than 30 years, much of it in Coronado. By June, she should have most of her work wrapped up with the exception of a couple of projects that are still in the pipeline. At 62, she is ready to enjoy retirement with her husband, John, 64, a clinical pharmacist at Sharp Coronado Hospital who is also planning to retire by summer.
Howard designed her first home in Coronado in the mid 1980s. Since then she has worked on countless projects around town ranging from traditional to contemporary including many historical renovations. Her respect for a home’s history and her sense of style and proportion have made her the architect of choice for many of the city’s older homes. “I enjoy peeling away the inappropriate stuff and bringing them into this century while staying appropriate with their character,” Howard said. But, she said, “I’ve done the gamut, from full

historic restoration to contemporary. The focus is to give the clients what they want with their criteria. I don’t think I have a style. I like to think I can do anything. A good architect doesn’t depend on one style.” Dan and Chris Gensler contacted her in the summer of 2016 when they wanted to build a home from the ground up. They envisioned a traditional Mediterranean home with a tiled courtyard. “We chose Dorothy to design our dream home for many reasons. She impressed us with her passion and desire to build the house that we desired, and she had a process in place to help us determine what that was,” Chris Gensler said. “She explained that she likes to stay involved during the entire building process, which we believed would be an added benefit, having never built a custom house before. “Dorothy fielded our innumerable questions and 18

suggestions respectfully without regard to how simple — or silly — they may have seemed to her. She truly made the effort to get to know what we wanted and skillfully guided us through each planning step, as if the house was her own.” Howard always knew she wanted to be an architect. Growing up in Modesto, she and her father walked through housing tracts under construction. There, sevenyear-old Howard looked at the skeletons of unfinished homes and tried to figure out what room would be where. At home, she said, “I used to draw plans on butcher paper.” But people convinced her a career in design and architecture would be a mistake, so Howard graduated from California State University Stanislaus with a degree in business administration. But she paid her way through college working as a draftsperson and took a

job with a design-build company in the Bay Area after graduation. With her on-the-job experience, Howard took the four-day exam to become a licensed architect and passed on the first try. She got her license in 1986 — soon after she and her husband, then fiancé, moved to San Diego. After a short stint in the commercial sector (she designed the elevations for the bathrooms at the San Diego Convention Center), Howard landed a job with architect Bayless Cobb. She was soon getting small side jobs referred by builders, and by 1998 she started her own business. With so many jobs in Coronado, the family, which includes two now-grown sons, moved to the island in 2001. The Howards live in a 1,700-square-foot home built in 1931, downsizing from a larger house next door after their sons left home. Howard remodeled the
Spanish-style house a few years ago, expanding it from its original 1,100 square feet. “I don’t need too much space,” she said. Her ideal home would be 1,750 square feet with spaces that are all used all the time. These days, the typical remodeled home in Coronado is 3,000 to 4,000 square feet, she said. The challenge is getting everything clients want into a home with size, budget and time constraints. “It’s rare that a project gets everything,” she said. “We start with the must-haves and hopefully get in a lot of wants. The design part is like a puzzle; figuring out how to make things fit together. It’s like a Jenga tower.” That is the part Howard will miss the most. “I find when I’m designing, I get so engrossed hours will go by.” “It’s been a really fun career,” she said. “I have always been stunned that people will pay me to do this.”

1. When putting together a bedroom we like to start with the bed. It is a “bed” room after all! Since this is a place where you spend nearly half your life, we believe that investing a little bit more in a great mattress and comfortable bedding is important. We like to start with a set of white sheets, layer on a cozy duvet, blend in sleeping pillows behind some decorative pillows and top it off with a gorgeous coverlet or throw. 2. Setting the mood in the bedroom is the next step. Creating a space that is calm, cozy and stress-free is ideal for this room. Nightstands and dressers are great spaces to keep belongings organized and out of sight. When styling those surfaces, we like to keep things simple and functional. A stack of books to read, a calming scented candle and bedside lamps with a soft light are a good place to start. Once we have the foundation of the necessities, we layer in a few decorative objects to add height or length to a surface. Keeping the artwork and decor neutral and subtle creates a calm place for your eye to rest. 3. One of our go-to items for a bedroom is either a bench at the end of the bed or a chair in the corner of the room. Not only are they functional for putting on shoes, but they enhance the cozy factor. Chairs and benches will also add a different texture. Bedrooms can often be heavy on the fabric, so a wood or leather chair is a great way to break up the space. 4. Organization is key. We like to make sure there is a place for everything, so things don’t pile up and destroy the tranquility of the room. A designated phone charger, a small bowl for jewelry or a watch on the bedside table and a hook on the back of the door for a robe or jacket are must-haves for every bedroom. 5. The last elements of bedroom designing are window treatments. One of our favorite tricks is to hang a curtain rod close to the ceiling to make the space feel taller and to break up large walls with the softness of fabric. Curtains are also a great way to create balance in a space. Even if doors or window are not centered, extending the rods one way or the other creates a visually balanced look. We also love a good Roman shade because are they functional and add a tailored look to any window.

Decor & Design Ideas Are you ready for a fresh look in your home? If your décor is looking a little tired, sometimes simple, easy changes can make a difference. Try a new color or add some light. abrics add color and style while softening a room. And the great thing is that fabric for furniture is constantly improving. Here are some of the latest trends. • New performance fabrics like Crypton have greatly expanded the soft woven and chenille textures, patterns and colors available for upholstered furniture that resist moisture, stains and odors. These hardy fabrics freshen up with easy water-based cleaning. • New fabrics are bringing the durability of Sunbrella into more fashionable upholstered furniture. • For larger pieces like sofas, sectionals, club chairs go with neutral colors and let patterned accent chairs, pillows and accessories tell the color story. This makes it easier to change the look of your room without replacing your investment pieces. • Expanded upholstery options are now available for every lifestyle from chairs that swivel and recline, modular sofas and sleepers, benches, and ottomans that can be used in place of tables. • Non-traditional case goods — such as tables, chests, credenzas — are now coming covered in fabric, grasscloth and faux shagreen textures. Lacquered grasscloth is especially popular now and adds wonderful texture to coastal homes. Pat Marshall Owner, Côtier 1053 B Ave, (619) 435-0791 cotierhome.com

aint is a simple way to freshen a tired space, create a focal point and add dimension to the interior or exterior of a home. Paint colors really can make or break a home. Here are a few colors we found ourselves returning to for many different client aesthetics and styles at J Hill Interiors: • Our favorite white lately has been Sherwin Williams Alabaster (SW7008). It is a warm light white; not too warm, but not cold. We also love Sherwin Williams Snowbound (SW7004) that invokes the same welcoming mood. • On our list of go-to neutrals for primary wall colors are Dunn Edwards Foggy Day (DE6226), Sherwin Williams Drift of Mist (SW9166) and Sherwin Williams Gossamer Veil (SW9165). They are great warm grays and quiet wall colors for a soothing and sophisticated feel. • Sherwin Williams Loyal Blue (SW6510) is perfect for a bold vanity color, furniture piece or accent wall. It is dramatic but not too eccentric. If you want to tone it down a bit, Sherwin Williams Smoky Blue (SW 7604) is a perfect muted blue for a vanity. It provides excitement without being too loud. • Statement bedroom colors we recently have used are Sherwin Williams Smoky Salmon (SW6331) for a girl’s bedroom, Sherwin William Underseas (SW6214) for a moody secondary bedroom or game room and Sherwin Williams Enigma (SW6018) for a soothing master or guest bedroom. • Subway tiles are a good solution for many different applications; they are classy and almost timeless. The good news is that there are now more choices in subway tiles than ever. Fresh and modern options include different sizes and proportions, patterns, textures and colors. Installation can add more variety. We like to stack instead of staggering them.
rom kitchen backsplashes to bathroom showers, tile can create a great custom look without breaking the bank. Here are tips and trends for the latest in tiles: • Concrete tiles are very popular. These come with bold prints. But you have to be very selective where to install them. The bold patterns can be overpowering. • The hexagon is a very popular shape right now. It represents life and energy. You can have it in a classic look, almost like subway tile, or you can go bold and make a statement, maybe using dark glass tiles.

any people underestimate the importance of lighting when it comes to home décor. Can or track lighting is no longer enough, so here are a few ideas to brighten your space. • My favorite lighting fixtures are chandeliers. A shimmering chandelier adds a little bling to any room. I have used them in dining rooms, kitchens, powder rooms, girls’ bedrooms and over a bathtub in a master suite with matching sconces. Depending upon the finish they can be used in coastal, cottage or even rustic cabin style homes. • Pendant lighting in combination with recessed lighting brings more light and character to a

hen you really need a wow factor, consider wallpaper. Bold or subtle, it can transform a room, adding elegance and sophistication. • One of my absolute favorites is handmade mulberry wall coverings. Their palette is vegetable dyed with great color and tonal depth. Handmade from mulberry fiber, it has many different textures, from smooth to a paper that looks like plaster. It comes in sheets, so the finished installation has very subtle variations in color and texture. This wall covering is especially effective when used around natural materials such as wood, wicker, stone and bamboo. • A wallpaper that succeeds decade after decade is the famous “Martinique” banana leaf, originally designed for the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1942. It is still fresh and contemporary.
It can be daringly applied in a lanai, a pool house, a powder room or a dining room. It is available in vibrant jungle greens (the original), soft sage greens and a sand, cream and taupe version. • Another favorite option is the beautiful gilded papers made in Japan. They can be paper, silk, fine grass or hemp. They are rich in depth of color and very subtle. Their palette is gold, graphite, platinum, silver and copper. They were imported here from Japan in the 1950s as the famous “tea squares.” Any of these wonderful papers would look fantastic in a contemporary setting.

TV show host (CHS ’94) promotes doing things over having things

omegrown local John Weisbarth just wrapped up taping the fifth season of Tiny House Nation, a show where he and co-host Zack Giffin help people across the country significantly downsize in hopes of building bigger lives in tiny spaces. The tiny-house movement has gained traction in the past decade. Americans fed up with being bogged down by stuff and consumerism have chosen to live more simply, forgoing big houses filled with things for smaller spaces and more experiences. Homes less than 400 square feet are considered tiny houses. “Our stuff is not passive,” Weisbarth explained. “It costs us both physically and mentally. This movement is about people who value experiences over things.” The Coronado High School grad (class of ’94) noted that in the 1950s, the average square footage of a home for a family of four was 900 square feet; today it’s around 3,000. “We don’t suffer from scarcity, we suffer from abundance,” Weisbarth said. “And it’s not making us happier — in fact it’s making us less happy.” Weisbarth encourages his clients on the show to think about tiny houses as tools for achieving what you really want. Co-host Giffin embraced tiny-house living years go to facilitate his dream of becoming a professional skier. Giffin had no money and couldn’t afford to live in the ski resorts, so he built himself a tiny house on wheels and parked it in the resort parking
lots, enabling him to pursue his goals. “Significantly downsizing saves people time and money, freeing up space both physically and mentally for what they really love in life, and what makes them really happy,” Weisbarth said. And although the Coronado resident does not live in a tiny house, he tries to live by the tenets of tiny-house living. The first step, he said, is deciding what really brings you joy — art, travel, music, golf, crafting, working out or whatever — and clearing everything out with those focuses in mind. When it comes to paring down, most people don’t use or care about 20 percent of their stuff, which makes it easy to part with. Another 20 percent of their belongings are items they will never part with. (“The things you’d grab in a fire,” he said). The remaining 60 percent is the challenging chunk to attack. “If it’s not something you use, or something you really love, it should probably go,” he said. Clothes seem to be the hardest items to part with because they can be both utilitarian and sentimental, Weisbarth said. But when square footage is a real issue, the things you love and need have to be prioritized. “It’s about both efficiency of space and making sure your house still feels like home.” Of course, moving into 350 square feet is a radical choice that most Americans won’t make. “Like a good handlebar mustache, it may look really good on you, but it’s just not right for me,” Weisbarth quipped. Still,

he said, the bigger meaning of the movement is not about people moving into tiny homes on wheels. “The real power is that people reflect on what’s an appropriate space for them. They think about the unused rooms in their homes they’re paying to furnish, air condition and heat. Or about how much money and time they spend maintaining their stuff.” Weisbarth, said that anybody can employ the tenets of tiny house living. “It’s about living within your means, paring down and decluttering, making space for mental clarity, and being responsible with natural resources, not taking more than you really need.” “No matter the space you live in,” he said, “get away from the trap that buying stuff will make you happier. Find what brings you real joy, clear out the plastic stuff, and make room for that.”

Hi everyone! This is Ian, Christine’s husband. She asked me to write this column in honor of Valentine’s Day. (Actually, she told me to write it, there was no choice.) But I’m cool with it, because the topic is awesome: Valentine’s Day gifts that you can buy for

B E PA M P E R E D If your special someone is like mine, she’ll love getting her nails done. But no one gets regular manicures anymore…it’s all gel nails. And then there are extras like glitter or other things painted on the nails. This is all done at fancy places with cute furniture, chandeliers and champagne. Be Polished is the perfect place for this. The website says the salon blends “posh pampering, blissful bubbly and exceptional service for a divine experience.” I walked by to get visual confirmation: chandeliers for the win! Definitely picking up a gift certificate here. Be Polished 131 Orange Ave, Suite 102 619-437-1440 bepolishedstudio.com

S O M E T H I N G S PA R K LY I’m pretty artistic, so I like to design jewelry for my wife. But did you know that Muhl Jewelers can help you do this? To make your unique piece, owner Renae Wease can help you pick out a stone and create a design. But if you’re short on time (and I’m guessing you are), she has all kinds of pretty things available just for Valentine’s Day. Some of my favorites include a heart-shaped necklace made out of sapphires and 14-karat yellow gold; a heart necklace made from natural pink sapphires with a Hotel Del crown on top, decorated with diamonds; and a beautiful layered necklace with natural sapphires in pink and green. All are handmade. Whatever you pick, if you get it from Muhl, you’re going to look like a boss! Muhl Jewelers 1130 Orange Ave. 619-435-4541

Working Relationships Couples find strength in business together
While most couples head out in different directions in the morning and won’t meet up again until the evening, some partners head to the same workplace. Is that much togetherness too much? In honor of Valentine’s Day, we asked four local couples their thoughts on sharing work and home life.
HOW DID YOU END UP IN BUSINESS TOGETHER? It was a family business of Perkins, Perkins and Hammett that bought the store in 1987. We had the opportunity to buy out our partners and run it as Hammett and Hammett in 1999. That is when Pam started being a part of the day-to-day operations. HOW DO YOU KEEP WORK AND HOME LIFE SEPARATE? It hasn’t been important to separate home and business. We both have varying schedules, so we talk and brain storm wherever we might be. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES WHO WOULD LIKE TO WORK TOGETHER? Go for it! Strong relationships get stronger. Pam thinks she is just as funny as I am, so laughter is a part of our daily life.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DATE SPOT IN CORONADO? We love the aft deck view of Glorietta Bay from our boat Pampered. It is our happy place at the Coronado Yacht Club. — Phil Hammett
HOW DID YOU END UP IN BUSINESS TOGETHER? We always thought that it would be exciting, fun and rewarding to run a business of our own. Over the years, we tossed around a bunch of different ideas ranging from a mobile ice cream truck to children’s bibs, opening an event space, trying out custom calligraphy and finally doing construction. Taking the leap of faith and quitting a good job is a bold move when you are responsible for everyday family expenses. I worked for another general contractor for 10 years before we had enough savings and courage to make the transition. Some people called us crazy, and they were right. It was crazy, but also rewarding and exciting. HOW DO YOU KEEP WORK AND HOME LIFE SEPARATE? Separating work life and home life is difficult, especially since we have our office set up at home. We manage it fairly well with dedicated times set aside to discuss work outside of the regular work day. In the beginning, we used to let Clarke Construction dominate most of our conversations at home, but that became exhausting, and we learned to compartmentalize it. Even a simple “I need 30 minutes with you for work at some point tonight, but you tell me when” is effective and creates enough heads up and avoids the feeling of being bombarded with work all the time WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES WHO WOULD LIKE TO WORK TOGETHER? We were careful to think through what we anticipated to be our strengths, weaknesses, fears, daily workloads and many other things.

You just don’t know what you are getting into as a first-time business owner. Make sure you are starting out with a strong foundation is important, try to anticipate how each person will deal with stress and have open and honest communication. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DATE SPOT IN CORONADO? Tartine is hard to beat, but we’ve been known to take advantage of Matt Heineke’s music at Stake Chophouse & Bar for happy hour, and also love Maretalia’s cold cocktails. — Trevor Clarke

MISSY AND CAM CAMERON Real estate agents, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties HOW DID YOU END UP IN BUSINESS TOGETHER? When Cam retired from the NFL (he coached a number of teams including the Chargers) and college coaching, it was a natural move to join me in real estate — something I had been doing for years, and something he had always had a keen interest in. The flexible schedule allows us to see our four kids: two play college football on opposite ends of the country and traveling to see them all keeps us hopping.
HOW DO YOU KEEP WORK AND HOME LIFE SEPARATE? For years while Cam was in coaching, we established a date night to keep it fresh, and we still do this now that we work together in real estate. It is hard not to talk shop though because we love what we do. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES WHO WOULD LIKE TO WORK TOGETHER? It really helps if you pick something you both dearly love so that it doesn’t feel like work. We have felt that way in football and in real estate. We’ve been very lucky! WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DATE SPOT IN CORONADO? There are so many great spots for a date night in Coronado. We love dining at Sheerwater at The Del and have also had High Tide Pizza delivered to the beach at The Shores where we eat at sunset and watch the surfers in our bare feet. We love the beach, the activity and the planes and helos flying overhead reminding us of those who are serving. One of our sons is at West Point and we love seeing these heroes in action. — Missy Cameron

HOW DID YOU END UP IN BUSINESS TOGETHER? When we married, we didn’t realize that we had complementary talents. Then John’s business moved from commercial to residential building (Flagg Coastal Homes). He needed additional assistance in design and finances. So, although I had been a corporate banker and then switched to event management, I left my business to move into residential real estate sales with Flagship Properties. The combination of sharing ideas between what buyers look for and what owners like in building style was a win-win. HOW DO YOU KEEP WORK AND HOME LIFE SEPARATE? For us, its intertwined, which is not a bad thing. We work in separate locations so sometimes the only time we can hash out details is at coffee in the morning or at home in the evening. Sharing perspectives and ideas is part of what makes not only our businesses but our relationship successful. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES WHO WOULD LIKE TO WORK TOGETHER? Communication is key, keep things in perspective

Opossums are the only North American marsupials.

T’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE. While we are
sleeping, there’s a lot of action outside. Opossums and rats are commonly seen, while raccoons and skunks are a bit more elusive. All this wildlife can be a nuisance but I love knowing that nature is thriving in Coronado’s urban environment. Rats are a big problem and regularly eat the fruit off my trees. The evidence is in the hollowed-out oranges lying under the tree. Skunks visit occasionally but stay out of sight for the most part. I haven’t heard of anyone’s dog getting sprayed in Coronado, but there’s a first time for everything! Raccoons can be destructive and mean, knocking over garbage cans and injuring or killing pets. I know when they have visited our yard because they

leave an oil slick or soapy bubbles in the pond, which leads me to believe they are coming out of the sewers. They ate all the fish in our pond and recently stole the whole crop of apples off our tree overnight, so they are on my naughty list. Opossums are cute when they are small, but as adults they are smelly, messy and not so attractive. They get a bad rap for being aggressive and mean, but it’s mostly an act. Usually they will freeze and “play possum” when scared or give a menacing hiss. They knock plants off shelves and snack on our fruit trees, but I welcome them because they eat snails, slugs and baby rodents. Based on our eyewitness accounts and strategic video cameras, Coronado’s animal kingdom is alive and well. Now, if only I could have chickens….

February is a maintenance and preparation month in the garden. A lot of what you do now will reap benefits when the warmer months arrive. ✿ Garden prep: With our recent rains, the weeds are starting to pop up so stay ahead of them while the ground is soft. ✿ Planting: It’s time to start warm-season flowers and vegetables from seed to transplant in early spring. Use ‘“seed starting” soil, a mixture that is light, crumbly and more sterile than typical soil for a better success rate when starting seeds. As a rule, the soil depth that covers the seeds should be only three times their thickness. Did you know we can grow blueberries in Coronado? They

love to be grown in pots which makes them great for our small gardens. Shop for low-chill varieties (SouthMoon, Sunshine Blue, O’Neal or Misty). You should still be able to find these bareroot plants at your local nursery. ✿ Watering: My irrigation has been off for more than a month because of the rain we’ve received. With the sprinklers off this is a great time for irrigation maintenance and repair. ✿ Fertilizer: If you haven’t fertilized your citrus trees yet, now is the time. Avocado trees

are also ready for fertilizing in our frost-free area. ✿ Pest & Disease Control: Keep the yard raked to clear leaf litter and other decaying debris to keep snails, slugs and other pests from hiding out in your garden. ✿ Pruning: Plumerias are dropping their leaves so this is the time to take cuttings before new leaves start to develop. Let the cuttings dry at the cut end and wait for two months before planting. ✿ Miscellaneous: We had a week of exceptionally cold weather last month. If your garden suffered frost damage, wait another month or so until you see new growth on plants before pruning out the dead branches.
