Our annual reminder to Stop and smell the roses

It is hard to believe that this year we celebrate the 102nd year of the Coronado Flower Show. On April 20-21, Spreckels Park will welcome thousands of people under its beloved and storied tents. Volunteers, exhibitors, and guests alike will once again revel in the springtime magic the Show brings us each year. The entire Coronado Floral Association (CFA) has worked tirelessly to bring forth another iteration of Coronado’s longest running tradition. From the newly minted green thumbs just beginning to blossom to the most veteran florist already secure in their verdant prowess, all are welcome to celebrate with us as we gather once again for an event many deem a Crown Jewel of our island’s rich and joyous history.

Exhibits and decor this year will center around the theme “Ocean of Flowers.” With a backdrop that sparks imagery of colorful water motifs and floral fantasies, it also has ignited our desire to help bring recognition to the efforts local community groups have already made in nurturing our greatest resource. One can expect to see us continuing our traditions of creating memorable floral experiences that will be guided this year by a piqued interest in showcasing a more sustainable and environmentally friendly event.

While it can easily be said by some that the Flower Show is simply a weekend of flowers and fetes, in my nearly decade-long tenure as a CFA board member I have found it is so much more. The Flower Show weekend is an annual reminder to take the time to come together and build community with one another. Our society can often leave us too preoccupied with bigger issues that affect and weigh down our conscience. I am grateful that the Show allows us each year a moment to pause to appreciate the beauty of nature and experience a transformative sense of togetherness.

As I reflect on my own time as a volunteer for the CFA, I am humbled by what I have gained and learned through an appreciation of what it means to be part of a community. I could not have had such a fulfilling experience without the wonderful and unfailing support of my fellow Board members and our entire island community. My biggest takeaway is the power of what collaborative work can accomplish.

The longevity of the CFA is a testimony to the loyalty, dedication, and hard work that generations of Islanders have put forth over the last century. Coronado is uniquely fortunate for the enthusiasm, participation, and service its volunteers provide to the community. The ability to volunteer is a privilege, and with that privilege comes a responsibility to ensure we are doing what we can to give back. By building community, you can provide a space for strangers and loved ones to share in a unique experience and cultivate unity.

I look forward to having the privilege of bumping into you at any one of the celebratory experiences this year’s event offers: dropping off an entry to be displayed beneath the tents in any of the five Divisions; sharing a cool beverage within the Beer and Wine Garden; nibbling on a tasty treat from one of this year’s vendors from the brand new food pavilion; toasting to friends and family at the 1922 Club’s “Ocean Electric” party and fundraiser on Saturday night; or just simply soaking in the splendor of the memories being made once again under the tents of our Show.

7 Things Not to Miss at the 102nd Coronado Flower Show Ocean of Flowers

Oh April, full of life. The birds are chirping with the glory of warmer days. The flowers bursting with love and devotion for all who tended to them. Take a walk down any street on the island and you are sure to see gardens in bloom. And soon we will gather under the tents of the 102nd Coronado Flower Show on April 20 and 21.

Whether you have been attending the show for years or this is your first one, we invite you to step inside and explore all the splendor of the Earth’s bounty. As always you can expect to see flowers and familiar faces, but you will also be delighted with a few new surprises that we’ve been diligently working on for the past 9 months.

Here are 7 things you won’t want to miss at this year’s Coronado Flower Show, Ocean of Flowers.

1. Home Front Garden Tour

We are bringing back a cherished tradition this year, a guided tour of the island’s most florally beautiful homes.

On Saturday, April 20 from 9am-12pm, we welcome the community to participate in a self guided walking tour of Coronado’s top winning homes. A live painting will be taking place at the yet to be announced top home by local artist Tina Christensen. Home front judging takes place this year April 5-7. Head to our website to find a map, a list of the top homes and more information on how to make the most of this beloved Coronado tradition.

2. Youth Section

The Flower Show is not complete without the participation of our City's youngest gardeners. The Coronado Junior Woman’s Club is thrilled to once again organize and host the Youth Section of the Flower Show. This year, we bring you the whimsical theme of “Sunken Treasure.” Children of all ages are invited to participate in the various youth exhibitor categories and enjoy the themed activities offered inside the Youth Section. Families can drop in to enjoy some crafting and arts activities while taking in the various entries in the picture plate contest, flower murals, potted plant entries and floral arrangements. Join us in cultivating the green thumbs of our junior gardeners!

3. Introducing Beyond the Tents

Step beyond the traditional confines of the Flower Show weekend with Beyond the Tents, where floral magic spills into every corner of our city. Join us for the inaugural year of this exciting event as we expand the celebration to embrace our community. Explore streets adorned with enchanting installations and storefronts bursting with spring blooms. Indulge in special menu delights and sip on cocktails infused with the essence of the season at Garage Buona Forchetta or treat yourself to the floral-inspired Crown Meets Sea's unique candle scent. For a rejuvenating experience, indulge yourself at Natalie Falletta Skin Care’s aromatherapy facial. Just to name a few! Don't miss out on this citywide celebration from Friday, April 19 to Sunday, April 21. Keep an eye on our website, coronadoflowershow. com for updates and additional participating venues! If you are a business wanting to participate, please email info@coronadoflowershow.com.

4. Family Movie Night

The Coronado Floral Association is thrilled to partner with fellow local organization, The Islander Ladies Club, to put on the Flower Show Family night, where locals can lay down their picnic blankets within the tents of the flower show and watch The Little Mermaid on an outdoor screen. Food, beer, and wine will be available for purchase and guests will enjoy a range of fun activities in addition to the screening. The Islander Ladies Club, is a non-profit group of women dedicated to bettering the Coronado community through service and giving. Their involvement in putting on this celebrated family event ensures it will be a wonderful, thoughtful evening of fun filled with lots of memorable touches.

5. The 1922 Club, Ocean Electric

One of the most celebrated events of the year is our 1922 Club. This year’s party, Ocean Electric, is taking nightlife to the next level. Think neon lights, glowing jellyfish and more. We have an amazing selection of local food and a variety of fun cocktails. Watch the night unfold as sea creatures come alive, backed by the greatest entertainment that San Diego has to offer. This is a cannot miss event on Saturday night of the Flower Show weekend, April 20.

6. Food

It wouldn’t be a festival without good eats. While we will have the fan favorites, we are elevating our offerings with new vendors like Clayton’s Bistro, Garage Buona Forchetta and Liberty Call Distilling. For those of you with a sweet tooth, we have Gelato Paradiso returning this year! We are excited to continue the tradition to support CHS Girls Water Polo in fundraising for the team and will be partnering again this year with Coronado Brewing Company and High Tide Bottle Shop for our beer and wine garden. Staying true to our Ocean theme, we are also working with the City of Coronado and Emerald Keepers to become a more sustainable event in all aspects of the show!

20 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | APRIL 2024

7. Music

We are also thrilled to welcome back some of our favorite musical guests from past years including the Coronado Concert Band, Coronado Ukulele Club, Crown City Chorale and Coronado Big Band! This year, we will be expanding the entertainment on the bandstand to include other local performance groups like the Coronado Academy of Dance! Be on the lookout for our full schedule of events.

We’ll see you there!

LOOKING BACK AT THE HISTORY OF HOME FRONT JUDGING

April in Coronado does not just bring spring flowers, it also brings the Coronado Flower Show held in Spreckels Park. This event has been presented for over a hundred years. This year’s theme is “Ocean of Flowers,” and one of our favorite local aspects of the flower show is the Home Front Judging.

Reviewing the history of the flower show and the home front judging, I found that the judging began in 1950, according to local newspapers. In 1951, judging was overseen by Lloyd Wall, and fronts of homes meriting awards in the opinion of the judges were marked by curbside signs for easier identification by the public. Home Front judging started small, but it did not take long for the residents of Coronado to look forward to this event.

In speaking with Lori P. Smith, co-chair of Home Front Judging this year, I learned all about the hard work that goes into completing this task. The judging is a long process involving some 150 volunteers. There are 62 areas included in the judges' routes to be reviewed. Each group of judges has between 35 to 70 sites to review. In addition, two judges are assigned to review and judge the commercial areas of town. Churches, schools, and parks are yet another area to be considered, and the Coronado Cays have another team to walk their streets.

After the reviews are completed, the team starts to narrow down the top ten homes, then the final three homes. Then the top three appear in the newspaper before they are announced elsewhere. Meanwhile, street after street is walked by volunteers and many blue, red and yellow ribbons are awarded. On the reverse side of the award is a box that may have been

The home front judging committee is to be commended for a job well done each year along with the homeowners who put so much effort into their yards. The committee welcomes new members and encourages anyone interested to join the team. Over the years they have had vacationers participate as well as some judges serving as a group or a family.

This April, the home front judging is chaired by Kelly Kindorf and Lori P. Smith, for the third year in a row.

The Navy SEAL Museum San Diego Secures Location in Downtown San Diego

Coronado’s Navy SEAL landmark – the Naked Warrior statue in Glorietta Bay Park – will now have a counterpart across the bay. The Navy SEAL Museum is coming to downtown San Diego!

Immersing visitors in the experience of Navy SEALs through innovation, interactivity and history, the Navy SEAL Museum San Diego will be the second museum in the United States dedicated to SEALs, with its original location in Ft. Pierce, Florida.

Designed to honor the history and heritage of the U.S. Navy SEALs and their forerunners, the Navy SEAL Museum San Diego will educate visitors about Frogmen from World War II to the present day. The venue will inspire awe, reverence, and patriotism for guests of all ages and backgrounds.

Explore the Covert World of Navy SEALs Navy SEALs have made history since World War II. SEAL is an acronym, which refers to their versatility to operate in Sea, Air, and on Land. They are the most highly trained and elite force in the U.S. military. The museum will bring to life Navy SEAL stories of service and sacrifice that have influenced the trajectory of American history.

SALUTE DISCOVER CORONADO

Expected to open later this year, the museum’s immersive SEAL experience will offer visitors first-person accounts, activated artifacts, digital media, and interactive fullbody challenges. Exhibits and galleries will feature vehicles, vessels, tactical equipment, and weaponry from the beginning of Naval Special Warfare through modern era conflicts.

With dynamic exhibits, the Navy SEAL Museum will be a unique opportunity for guests of all ages to learn more about these elite warriors. You won’t want to miss the museum if you’ve always been fascinated by the inner workings of Navy SEALs, want to learn more about their heritage, or are looking for an educational, immersive, and family-friendly outing.

What’s Ahead

San Diego will now be home to an innovative museum dedicated to Naval Special Warfare, spanning 80 years, with missions on every continent, and conflicts around the globe.

“How often in life can you invest in the future of your city by honoring those who heroically defend our freedom in a new museum and visitor destination that will inspire future generations?” stated Kip Howard, Museum Board Member. “The Navy SEAL Museum truly is a once-inlifetime opportunity to do exactly that, in the heart of the region so proud of its military history. I am honored to be part of the team that will accomplish this vision.”

The museum will occupy the former home of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s downtown location at 1001 Kettner Boulevard.

Scheduled to open in late 2024, the 10,000-square-foot museum will be within walking distance of the San Diego bayfront and serve as the preview of a larger, world-class museum to be built in the coming years. This showcase museum will engage visitors of all ages through immersive storytelling and galleries, activated artifacts, engaging digital media, and interactive exhibits.

The museum will be led by Captain (SEAL) Todd Perry, USN (Ret.), executive director, a San Diego native. Perry recently retired from active duty, after

serving for more than 40 years; he and his west coast team will work closely with the Ft. Pierce museum team and national board. Why San Diego?

San Diego was chosen as the west coast expansion of the Navy SEAL Museum, as it is home to Naval Special Warfare; Coronado claims the training center where every aspiring SEAL candidate must complete the infamous and arduous Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training.

“This museum has been several years in the making, and we’ve secured the ideal space in the heart of San Diego – an iconic location for an iconic force – near Naval Base Coronado, where all Navy SEALs are trained and led, and in a region where more than 600,000 military veterans reside,” said retired Navy SEAL Master Chief Rick Kaiser, the Navy SEAL Museum’s Chief Executive Officer.

“The museum will be both educational and emotional with moments of excitement and reflection that we believe will inspire visitors of all ages to a life of service, patriotism and an appreciation of our military. Perhaps a few of the next generation will aspire to become Navy SEALs,” he added.

The museum promises to be a major tourist draw in the San Diego and greater Southern California region, bringing additional visitors and revenue to the surrounding areas.

The museum is largely committed to serving the Naval Special Warfare community through its Trident House Charities Program. The team also looks forward to being an active partner in the region and will invest in educational programs to benefit schools and organizations in San Diego’s communities.

As the Navy SEAL Museum lays its roots locally, it invites San Diegans to be a part of it through memberships, donations, and sponsorship opportunities. To learn more, visit navysealmuseumsd.org.

Designer Kitchen Tour

We just completed a beautiful kitchen remodel for one of our designers, Karyn Molina. Karyn lives with her husband Tony Molina in San Diego's Mission Hills area. Tony had purchased the home in May of 2019, prior to meeting Karyn. The home was originally a duplex and they have worked over the past couple of years to turn it into

their dream home, doing much of the remodeling themselves. When it came to the kitchen however, she knew that she would need the help of her team and a contractor.

Karyn and Tony got engaged in February of 2022 and the wedding was set for April 2023. Working with Jessica’s husband Kraig Nicolls, owner of Nicolls Construction, and in true interior designer fashion, we raced to get the kitchen remodeled in between our other design projects, throwing a bridal shower, a bachelorette party and working through the holidays to get the kitchen done before the wedding. We reached the finish line the week before the wedding and were able to host friends and family from out of town in the gorgeous new space.

They both love to entertain so having a large open concept kitchen was super important to them. Many custom details were included in this renovation, like a tall, custom cabinet to house coffee makers with retractable cabinet doors and a countertop to conceal the clutter and keep the counters clean. Tony wanted a bar area, so we made taller drawers to store wine and liquor bottles and a paneled beverage fridge by the Dutch door.

CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 35

The kitchen was once a typical galley style space closed off to the living room so we removed the wall and created a giant center island with two dishwashers. The exterior wall had a giant block window that was taking up prime real estate so we moved the front door over a bit so we could create a coffee and drink area. We mirrored this look on the opposite wall with the fridge and pantry.

36 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | APRIL 2024

Our design inspiration for the space was a blend of European style and modern conveniences. We paneled all the appliances to make the space look cohesive. We ran the gorgeous marble counters up behind the stove and installed a shelf for decor and cooking supplies.

Coronado Fitness Club Offers Boutique

Space to Fulfill Your Fitness Goals

or Coronado resident Samantha Bey, it’s a dream job. When the owners of the Coronado Fitness Club decided to expand their fitness class offerings and develop their upstairs studio, Bey knew she was up to the task.

The goal? To create a sleek, inviting space with state-of-the art equipment that welcomes guests of all levels. The results? A zen-like, engaging spot with soothing blue lighting, invigorating music and all the tools you need for a solid, consistent workout routine.

“When you walk in those studio doors, you shed whatever is irritating you or weighing you down and enter a transportive space where you know you’re going to get a great workout,” said Bey.

She said that developing the right aesthetic was very important to her.

“For me, lighting and music are huge factors in getting a good workout,” said Bey. “Without bright lights in your eyes, you can

tone out distractions and hone in on your efforts.”

In addition to a polished new buildout, the studio is getting lots of attention for its range of classes. This includes heated yoga sculpt, spin, barre, heated yoga flow,

restorative stretch and HIIT circuit, which they call FIIT. Bey said it’s the only gym on the island to offer such a robust catalogue.

“I love the studio at Coronado Fitness Club because I can find a class for all my fitness goals,” said Amanda Werth, Coronado resident. “Whether it’s circuit strength training, spin cardio, stretch and recover or my current favorite, barre.”

Werth says that when she walks into barre, she gets an intense total body burn. Barre class uses an individual barre and light hand weights along with pulsating movements to fatigue the muscles in an entirely unique way, according to the Coronado Fitness Club website.

“No minute is wasted in that class, and it’s never the same,” said Werth. “Natasha keeps me on my toes every week. It’s hard work and so worth it.”

Other popular classes include the FIIT class, which is high-intensity interval training. This workout boosts fitness

through heart-pumping intervals followed by recovery periods, utilizing machines, free weights, and resistance props in a circuit around the room. The best part? It goes by fast, and everything changes so much you can’t get bored.

Heated Yoga Sculpt encompasses a powerful series of challenging yoga flow movements that transition into highrepetition, lower-weight strength training and cardio burts. The room is heated between 80-90 degrees for enhanced flexibility and heart rate. The class is very core-challenging but fun, and wraps up in Shavasana complete with a cooling eucalyptus towel.

The Spin class, which one local described as “an out of body experience, in a good way,” will challenge your cardiovascular endurance with a 45-minute indoor bike ride. High-energy music and ever-changing heart-pumping drills keep riders engaged and excited.

CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 39

Other classes include Heated Sculpt, Spin and Stretch, Bodyweight FIIT, Happy Hour HIIT, Restorative Stretch and Heated Yoga Flow. And keep your eye out for new Pilates classes, says Bey.

For people who want to take unlimited classes, the pricing is reasonable at $169 a month. The gym also offers class packages for five and ten classes, as well as add ons for gym access.

It’s all about catering to the needs of a diverse community with different fitness needs.

“I want people to feel welcome, motivated, and excited when they come into the Studio,” Bey said. “Consistency is one of the most important elements of an effective workout routine, so I want it to be a place people want to keep coming back to, and a place where you can leave whatever life stressors you are dealing with at the door.”

For busy moms with kids, Coronado Fitness Club offers something no other gym in town has: childcare. The childcare services launched in November with the help of skilled providers, allowing moms to drop their kids ages six months to six years 8:15-11:30, Monday through Friday.

“The childcare was a game-changer for me in many ways,” said Jessica Tompane, who has three small children.

Tompane had been going to the YMCA in Mission Valley specifically because they offered childcare. But she said it was inconvenient, unmotivating and isolating, considering her community is here, in Coronado. As soon as she heard that Coronado Fitness Club was offering childcare, she was sold.

“Now, I’m more consistent in working out than ever before, and I look forward to the classes and love seeing my people every day,” said Tompane. “What a big difference a small offering can make!”

Bey, who started working with the gym back in October, knew that childcare was desperately needed to help families make fitness a routine part of their lives. She says she’s grateful that gym owner and head coach Chris Foote gave it the green light.

“As a mom of four, I know better than anyone you can’t fill from an empty cup,” said Bey.

Parenting can be stressful, and Bey said that the endorphin boost gained from a good workout helps recenter and re-ground.

“I always like to say, you are only one workout away from a better mood,” said Bey. “As parents, it’s easy to let our moods get in the way, and that’s natural. But when you work out, you feel more centered, more together and more relaxed.”

You could say she’s passionate about fitness.

“Fitness and movement are such incredible gifts and a huge part of my life,” said Bey. “I love seeing people accomplish their goals, get stronger or just improve their day by moving their body.”

She says for the Studio, it’s full-steam ahead with exciting things on the horizon.

“Getting to share this with others is so wonderful, people are always happy when they’re done working out, so that’s a really fun part of what we do,” said Bey. “I feel really grateful for our members who are always so kind, supportive, and hardworking. We have a beautiful community!”

The Power of Flowers

An Art Exhibition Curated by the Coronado Art Association at the Coronado Library

Artist’s Reception 2-4pm on Sunday April 7

Free and open to the public, the show runs from April 7 through June

Jaime Camacho

Gripping camera in one hand and hanging on to a low hanging tree branch with the other, the artist set his sights on a large lotus flower floating in dark water just below his perch. His body was draped along the limb of a very large tree.

Then he fell.

By instinct he held his camera high and dry over his head. He gathered himself. Standing there in the dark shallows of the water, he was struck by the beauty of the flower as seen from an entirely different point of view. He decided that this is the way he would paint it.

ART CORONADO ART ASSOCIATION

He took the shot and brought the reference photograph back to his art studio. He dried off and began to paint the flower that he saw that evening.

Looking at this work of art from this point of view we can see how the unfolding curved boat-like petals unfold to kiss the surface of the water, and how the curved surface of the water kisses it back.

This is exactly the artist’s intent. Jaime Camacho is a photographer, a painter of fine art and an architect. All of those skills were brought to bear to create this work of art. The artist has conveyed the powerful presence of this flower. There is a feeling of serenity created by the delicate balance of its floating form and faint reflection in rippling water.

On Exhibit now at the Coronado Library through the end of June, is the work of five extraordinary artists who are members of the Coronado Art Association. The Association holds a plein air art exhibit on the first and third Sundays of each month across the street from the Library at Spreckels Park. This Exhibition is a group show curated by the Association and has been hosted by the Coronado Library annually since 2020. Each of the artists selected for this show present their own unique understanding of the power of flowers

Nancy Plank

Artist Nancy Plank brings her beauties inside to paint. Her paintings capture the exuberance of a freshly plucked bouquet. These paintings will grab your attention from across the room. As you move in to take a closer look, the skill of the artist becomes even more evident.

The flowers emerge from dark to light. The art transcends realism to capture the powerful moment of nature’s poetry in bloom.

Beate Bermann-Enn

German Expressionist Beate Bermann-Enn’s canvases are so large that they provide a wide- angle view of an entire field of flowers. It is a view that moves you. Each of her very large canvases trace the energy lines of water and wind that form the flow of flowers within the landscape. When viewed from a distance of four to five feet, these canvases each can have a slightly hypnotic effect. This is unique to her work. Her bravura brush stroke style evokes the powerful effect that flowers in a field can have at times of prolific bloom. You can almost feel the growing plants draw strength from the earth and power from the sun. Her talents include that of being both a master gardener and fine art painter. One can tell she tills the soil as well as paints the beauty of the flowers that spring forth from the land in each of these works of art.

Tina Christiansen

Artist Tina Christiansen paints from the perspective of a joyful bohemian. Her work ranges in painting style from the wild abandon of expressionism to the quiet and reflective study of realism. When the exuberance of summer arrives the artist’s approach moves towards impressionism to capture the joy in a riot of flowers that the season brings.
