Island Surf

We live in a blissful place surrounded by water. We call ourselves Islanders. We see bikes and golfcarts with surfboards passing by. It’s not surprising that much of our lifestyle is based on the gorgeous stretch of sand and ocean between North Island and the Naval Training Base. Specifically, Coronado has a vibrant and close-knit surf community that is a reflection of the community as a whole.

MAKING WAVES | DEREK EMGE PHOTOGRAPHY

While there is surfing pretty much year-round, Coronado plays host to three great surfing events that define our community as much as our sport.

In November, our community gathers to remember one of its fallen, Lorton Mitchell, whose positive focus was an inspiration to so many in the surfing community. The Lorton

Mitchell Memorial Surf Festival went off last year in record surf, producing astounding rides and testing the fortitude of those who dared to paddle out. Thrown by the Coronado Surfing Association, this event is both a heated competition and a celebration of life at the same time.

coronadosurfingassociation.com

"It's more than just a surf contest" – Joe Ditler

In April, Coronado plays host to the Team Quinn Adaptive Surf Event. Adaptive surfers take to the surf to enjoy the stoke while also using the opportunity to continue their training for nationals. With a member of the world champion USA Adaptive Surf Team here on the island, Quinn Waitley, we are guaranteed to get a slate of serious and talented watermen and waterwomen for this event. The event is held by Team Quinn, a charitable organization here on Coronado that was formed for the purpose of serving people with disabilities and their families. teamquinnsurf.org

20 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2023

Coming up right around the corner in October, we are treated to the oddities and creativity of the Urt Spook Halloween Costume Surf. It is perhaps the greatest collection of surfing ghosts and goblins on the coast — how cool is it to see full families participating in the fun? Urt is a local clothing company that has deep ties to the ocean and direct ties to our navy heritage. That they host the Halloween surf contest completes the circle. urturt.com

The importance of family, the military and remembering those who preceded us and those who live among us with

disabilities or their own struggles are all part of the Coronado fabric of life — it’s what makes Island Surf so special!

New Members Join Discover Coronado Advisory Board

Small Business Owner and Historian Elected to Coronado Destination Marketing Organization

After being sworn in, Christine Stokes (L), Coronado City Clerk Kelsea Holian (C) and Colleen Cavalieri (R) pause in Council Chambers, where Discover Coronado meetings are held.

COMMUNITY | DISCOVER CORONADO

Two prominent Coronado leaders — a local small business owner and a historian — have been elected to one of Coronado’s key advisory boards.

At its June 20th meeting, the Coronado City Council elected Colleen Cavalieri, owner/operator of Coronado Tasting Room and vomFass Coronado, along with Christine Stokes, executive director of the Coronado Historical Association (CHA), to the advisory board of Discover Coronado, the city’s official destination marketing organization. The nine-person advisory board helps run Discover Coronado and market Coronado as an ideal destination for group meetings and leisure hotel visits during the off-season.

Cavalieri — a long-time resident of the Coronado Cays — now serves as an at-large board member. She joins fellow non-hotelier David Spatafore, principal of Blue Bridge Hospitality — with a portfolio of such Coronado mainstays as Stake Chophouse, Little Frenchie, The Islander and MooTime Creamery — who serves in the same capacity. Cavalieri, who introduced her gourmet Europe Market concept to Coronado in 2020 and unveiled an adjacent wine bar and tasting room the following year, will represent small business owners on the island while Spatafore represents Coronado’s array of restaurants, cafés and eateries.

A professional historian, Stokes joined CHA as director in 2016 and was promoted to executive director in 2019. She replaced Dave Landon on the advisory board, whose term on Discover Coronado ended June 30. In her current role, Stokes oversees programming at CHA’s museum and also spearheads the organization’s

ongoing advocacy for historic preservation in the community. She will represent residents and property owners who cherish the enduring history of the Coronado community.

“We are thrilled to have these two prominent Coronado leaders join our advisory board,” said Harold Rapoza Jr., chairperson of Discover Coronado. “Both Christine and Collen will provide important insight and expertise as we continue our important efforts to elevate the destination experience on Coronado Island.”

Founded in 2010, Discover Coronado is the City of Coronado’s official destination marketing organization, tasked with enriching and enhancing Coronado as a destination to spur spending by overnight guests. Overnight guests in Coronado pay a 10% transient occupancy tax (TOT) which is the second largest source of funding for the City of Coronado, amounting to about $16 million annually. A nonprofit organization, Discover Coronado’s important efforts generate the TOT, which provides many key public benefits to the residents of Coronado — ultimately improving quality of life in the area.

Discover Coronado advisory board meetings are open to the public and are held the first Thursday of each month in Council Chambers at Coronado City Hall.

For information on the economic impact of Discover Coronado, visit discovercoronado.com/impact.

A GLIMPSE OF OUR PAST

On the Beach in the 1930s

This moment in time brought to us by the Coronado Historical Association shows Roscoe Turner, far left, standing next to his airplane, "The Gilmore Lion," on the beach in Coronado in the late 1930s.

Mr. Turner was known to actually fly with his pet lion, Gilmore. According to Airport Journals, in June of 1935, Gilmore was moved to Burbank Airport, where Turner’s mechanic, Don Young, looked after him. With Gilmore no longer his flying companion, Turner continued to fly the plane with the lion insignia. Courtesy of the Coronado Historical Association Photograph Collection.

• The Coronado Historical Association (CHA) is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 charitable organization that was founded in 1969 to help people understand and appreciate Coronado’s unique history, art, architecture and historical resources. In support of its mission, CHA offers a year-round schedule of public programs and rotating museum exhibits. CHA is the community's trusted historian whose work to save historic architecture ensures that Coronado maintains its small-town character.

Barrels and Burritos

Mexican Food and Surfing: A SoCal Tradition

FOOD | OLIVE AVENUE SUPPER CLUB
Story by Chef Clyde Van Arsdall Photos by Wade Zolla and Will Holder

Growing up surfing in Coronado was all about the August swells. Outlet would get big and was known for its barrels. Getting locked in was exhilarating and, at times, terrifying. Getting caught inside and scratching to make it past the breakers could be exhausting and would undoubtedly work up an appetite.

There is no food in southern California more in step with surfing than Mexican food, and the burrito has to top the list of surfers' favorites. A burrito is filling and easy to grab and go.

As a kid, dawn patrol was a rite of passage. We would convince our parents that we had to get up well before the sun and head to the beach for the first sign of light; we were chasing the morning glass and that feeling you get when you are the first ones in the water.

My friends and I would bike to North Beach and head to the fire ring closest to the water. There would still be embers from the night before. After pulling leftover wood from all the other fire rings, we would use cardboard from discarded six-pack

containers to get a fire going. With any luck, we could find a few stray beers that got lost in the dark the night before. We considered these gifts from the gods.

“All I need is some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine.”- Jeff Spicoli.

Huddled up in our Mexican ponchos with our towels wrapped around our legs, we

Pipes Cafe in Cardiff California Burrito from Tacos El Trompo

would crouch around the fire, pass the cans of beer, and wait for dawn to break behind us. As soon as our eyes adjusted and we could make out the sets, we would pull on our wetsuits and hit the waves.

Several hours later, exhausted and starving, we would make a beeline to Clayton’s Mexican Take Out for a burrito which we would take and eat in the median across from Du-Ray's Surf Shop.

“Certainly, there is nothing wrong with a little feast on our time.” -Jeff Spicoli.

As soon as we could drive, this scenario repeated at various beaches, up and down the coast. You will find a taco shop wherever there are waves, and a good burrito is never very far away.

“I’m driving you’re navigating. Where is the party?” -Jeff Spicoli

I always like the little mom-and-pop joints, but a good ole Roberto’s Taco Shop never disappoints. They did invent the iconic California Burrito, adding fries to the classic carne asada. Few will disagree; that move was genius.

Right off the 5 freeway and West Washington Street, El Indio always opened early. We would pull off the freeway and grab

some burritos for the drive up the coast. The chimichanga was the way to go if we were eating pre-surf. Who doesn't like a deep-fried burrito?

If I am up in North County, I love the egg burritos from Pipes Cafe in Cardiff; they open at 7 a.m. There are few places like Pipes left. This iconic spot is all about surfing and surfers.

Many old spots are gone, and I won't pretend to be the expert I once was at finding good Mexican food up and down the coast. So I reached out to friends in town that still chase waves: Wade Zolla, Sam Working and Jackson Boomer. They came up with some shops that still roll some fat ones; yes, I am talking about burritos.

Wade and Sam still teach surfing on the Island at Coronado Surf Academy and volunteer at the Jimmy Miller Foundation. The Jimmy Miller Foundation is the world leader in providing Ocean Therapy for people suffering from trauma-induced mental and physical illness. You can also find Sam and Jackson slinging cocktails at the Tavern in town, so drop in and say howdy. I apologize for all the Spicoli quotes, but Fast Times at Ridgemont High was right in our wheelhouse. Cheers, here's to an epic August swell, good burritos and, God willing, clean beaches.

Local surfer and burrito enthusiast, Wade Zolla.

This beachside condo has undergone a transformative remodel, embracing the essence of coastal living. The original unit had some wonderful craftsmanship, but was in need of a major facelift. With an emphasis on airy, clean designs that accentuated the panoramic views, we brought this unit up to date. With its curved carpet and enclosed dark wood cabinets, it was time to bring this beauty to her full potential.

We started by opening up the wall that blocked the view when you first walked into the unit. Running a large island through the space maximized kitchen prep space and counter stool seating. In the open living room, we created a large sectional seating area, dining area and a smaller seating area with swivel chairs to take in the gorgeous views.

The middle bedroom was an office space that we turned into a room with two full beds,

perfect for those summer sleepovers. We carefully selected furnishing and textiles to evoke a sense of tranquility and comfort. Natural accents with hints of coastal charm create spaces that are relaxing and not overpowering. From the moment you step through the door of this condo, the clean design welcomes you into the space and reflects the stunning views. Head to Heads Up!

Coronado Art For Extraordinary

It’s a little-known truth that Coronado is an enclave of exceptional artists, from the talented students enrolled in CoSA and our other local schools, to the rank and file of our community possessing an extraordinarily creative bent. That’s exactly why you should head to the C3 Gallery in the Coronado Community Center for Heads Up! The exhibition is running now until September 8.

Curated with original work from nearly two dozen local artists, most of whom are longtime residents of Coronado, or employed here full time, this exhibition features portraits created in various mediums, from graphite, pencil and acrylic, to photography, watercolor and oil. Some of the images are haunting, like Cuban Baby and Sunset Beauty, while others are frivolous and fun, such as Pappy and Deacon or Didi, the Sunlover One named Ninth Inning simply mesmerizes with its captivating clarity and authenticity, portraying our own hometown hero, Manny Machado, during a crucial game ending at bat. But then, a personal favorite of mine is certainly Dale, an oil on wood using brushstrokes replete with love and admiration, as this well-known local artist pays homage to her departed husband.

What’s truly remarkable about this exhibition is the story behind each of these individual artists. Take, for example, photographer Laurie McCormick, whose formal photography training began in the windowless kitchen of her basement apartment in Boston more than five decades

ART | CORONADO CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Sunset Beauty by Jean Pierre Marques

ago. There, she painstakingly put together a personal dark room and began developing images of the scenes that she shot. Her poignant image, Cuban Boy, was taken on one of her two trips to Cuba where, she explains, “One of the most striking things I noticed on both visits was how the Cuban people look straight into your eyes and how serious they are about life.” Viewing this wide-eyed, precious child is certainly a testimony to her travelearned truth.

Equally haunting, yet ever so eerie is the mixed media piece, Sunset Beauty, created by Coronado’s own Jean Pierre Marques. This Frenchborn artist, a familiar face in town for decades, has been drawn to color and the beauty of nature since he was a child. This multi-talented artist explains, “When I paint I am in a deep state of awareness, I am in another world, another dimension…. My mind and body are totally relaxed. Coming from that guided invisible force my creativity flows like a rushing river reaching her goal toward a calming sea.” This is certainly evident in both of the pieces he created for Heads Up!, but remarkably so when studying Sunset Beauty as she gazes ever so hauntingly off into space.

On the other hand, the ephemeral Pappy and Deacon captures a succinct moment

in time, as a toddler takes his grandfather on a stroll, oblivious to the world around him. The work was created by longtime Coronado resident Connie Spitzer, whose community-focused watercolors are familiar around town. She captured this moment the very first time Deacon’s cautious grandpa took his 18-month-old grandson out of

Cuban Baby by Laurie McCormick

his stroller and allowed him to walk all on his own. “He was just strolling down the street, so proud, prancing along the sidewalk”, Connie explains. “Once I took the photo, I thought ‘Oh my gosh, that’s a painting.’” Best known for capturing the Emerald Isle’s quintessentially unique charm, Connie has been commissioned by dozens of locals to create watercolor paintings of their homes and gardens.

Fortunately, the portraits presented in this exhibition represent more than just humans, as evidenced by the tabby cat Didi the Sunlover in afternoon basking bliss. This delightful graphite, created by Romanian-born Brigitte Reimer, holds all the charm of the chance to savor the sunlight as so many felines are wont to do. Prior to moving to the states in 2008, and eventually landing in Coronado, Brigitte received her M.A. magna cum laude in Art History from the Université Lumière of Lyon. Brigitte’s love for the arts is deeply rooted, and wherever she goes she finds ways to connect with artists and the art world.

Self-employed muralist Brodrick Antoine has three different pieces in the Heads Up! Exhibition. While Ninth Inning is absolutely stunning in subject matter and size, his other pieces are equally impressive. He seems to have a proclivity for real-life enactment, and poignantly captures moments in time with distinct precision and passion.

Throughout her long and interesting life, local icon

Doug St. Denis has been passionate about the arts as an actor, dancer, painter, writer, potter, folksinger and author of two poetry books. Working in oil, acrylic and mixed media, she describes her paintings as “impressionistic,” although she has experimented with a variety of styles over the years. She continues to be influenced and inspired by the work of Matisse and Van Gogh. But her portrait Dale is a work clearly inspired by endearing love.

There are plenty of other captivating portraits you’ll want to see in the Heads Up! Exhibition at the Community Center (1845 Strand Way). Curated by the Visual Arts team of the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission, this is one of many exhibitions the Commission puts on throughout the year. Created by the City Council in 2011, the Commission's mission is to serve and partner with Coronado's many local artists and cultural arts organizations, and to act as a catalyst in further developing a vibrant and cohesive arts community, strengthening arts education, enhancing cultural tourism and economic development.∙

Learn How to Surf On-Island!

For most of us, paddling out through the whitewash into the ocean, standing up on a wobbly surfboard and holding your balance to ride a wave might seem a bit out of reach. Well, for anyone who wants to learn how to surf, we’d encourage you to banish all those negative thoughts and give it a try.

Surfing is for everyone. No matter your age, level of coolness or physical limitations — where there is a will, there is a way! For some inspiration, check out Team Quinn — a

Celebrating Coronado’s Surfing Community with the 5th Annual

SURF Photo Contest!

Crown City Magazine is proud to support the arts and shine a light on our local surfing community with this year’s SURF Photo Contest! This past June, 17 photographers submitted 127 photos in either amateur or professional divisions, and winners were announced at a special party at Emerald C Gallery.

Over the years, the contest voting process has become very complex to ensure a fair outcome. In short, each photo is assigned a letter and number, and the works are arranged in a random order to lessen the chance for judges to know who took the photos. Photos are then sent to judges via email, and judges respond to the email with their votes, which are counted by the Crown City Magazine team.

Photos were voted on by 32 judges. Magazine contributors, advertisers, community partners and many local groups and organizations were invited to be a part of the voting process. Judges were of all different ages and consisted of both surfers and non-surfers. Each judge invited to vote has a strong connection with Coronado and the panel is mostly made up of Coronado residents, local surfers, Coronado civic group members and City of Coronado employees.

This contest is meant to be a fun event for the whole community, but the impressive skill level of both the surfers and professional photographers who participate give the contest a level of seriousness and respect for the sport, as well as the art of photography.
