Take Good Care
As the Sun Sets, the Past Echoes while the Future Beckons
The end of the year is naturally a time for deeper personal reflection. This chapter in time is coming to a close, while the New Year is about to begin. We take note of what has taken place and think about how we want to move forward. It’s truly a magical time of year that can transform individuals, family, friends, businesses, communities and beyond, inspiring resolutions for the New Year.
If I were to have one wish for our lovely little corner of the planet, it would be for each issue of Crown City Magazine to uplift everyone’s spirit. We celebrate all the good stuff – the happy happenings and we give recognition to people who have done amazing things, like local resident Dr. Sally Ann Zoll in this month’s People column.
Surrounded by salt water, kissed by ocean breezes and crowned with lovely weather perfect for a healthy lifestyle, Coronado is an ideal place to march with optimism and joy into the future. The real gems on this island’s crown are the wonderful people. Coronado is FULL of generous and supportive human beings and it’s proven time and time again. Flip to this month’s Giving Back column, and you’ll find a perfect example in local business Parklife Properties and their friends, of how wonderfully caring, compassionate, and hilariously FUN our community members are.
I’d also like to acknowledge those among us who find this season difficult. In a rocky, turbulent world, we are fortunate to be part of a strong, caring community that makes a huge difference in our ability to cope with the harsh realities of life. Many people are struggling and it’s our job to shine our light into that darkness.
With empathy, compassion and good deeds, let’s stand with those who are struggling to show them that they are not alone. We’re in this together. To those who are suffering, I hope and pray that you find relief from life’s terrible grief. The music band R.E.M. sang it quite perfectly with the lyrics in, “Everybody Hurts.” We might feel lonely, but we really, truly are not alone here.
On that note, we are blessed to have Safe Harbor here – a local organization that has stood up as a leader and advocate for mental health. Please take a moment to look at their website, safeharborcoronado.org that is chock full of ideas, tips and information on tackling mental health issues. How fortunate we are to be able to look to our local leaders at Safe Harbor for guidance through many different struggles and mental health challenges. Consider making a donation to support the important work they do for us and our children, who are the most vulnerable. Thank you, Safe Harbor! With love and admiration, we are grateful for YOU!
As we look back on the past, and dream of the future, let’s take good care of ourselves and one another. Onward, friends!
Sincerely, Heather

Racing for Wishes
The Annual Amazing Race Event that Makes Children’s Dreams Come True
By Samantha Bey
Photos by Joe Ramirez Photography
Thirteen years ago, members of the Coronado, Coronado Cays and Navy Yacht Clubs banded together with the lofty goal of creating a local “Amazing Race” adventure to raise money for Make-AWish Foundation of San Diego. The hope was for the three yacht clubs to raise enough funds to grant wishes to three children sponsored by the foundation.
16 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2022
GIVING BACK | PARKLIFE PROPERTIES
The idea was to create a donate-to-play scavenger hunt loosely based on the popular TV show, full of quirky tasks and physical feats that teams of participants would get to and from by bike.
It was an instant success and, more than a decade later, “The Amazing Race for Children’s Wishes” has gained popularity and is now an annual event treasured by many locals. It has raised more than $1M since its inception and now consistently generates between $75 and $100K every year. Early on, the race was held in the Coronado Village, but has since moved to the Coronado Cays and added a boat route so participants can elect to join a bike or boat team. Roughly 10 teams of 10 people each complete the race by bike, and 5 of the same size do so by boat — and the plan is to keep growing.
Teams must raise a minimum of $2500 to participate; they then compete to complete 8 to 10 challenges as quickly and efficiently as they can to amass points. Renee Wilson, of Parklife Properties, who has cochaired the event for four years with Lisa Brenden and this year with Frances Howdyshell, explained
that the challenges and locations are kept extremely, extremely secret until the last second. The challenges include tasks and games in front of scorekeepers like egg carries, trivia questions, hula-hoop tricks and the “infamous” t-shirt puzzle where competitors must attempt to untie a knotted, frozen t-shirt.
“It’s surprisingly hard!,” laughed Wilson. “The stop at the Firehouse in the Cays is always a big hit,” she said.
The firefighters do not disappoint and have supported the event for several years by sponsoring and running a stop where they have the teams participate in fun “firefighting” activities, such as rolling the hoses dressed in fire gear.
CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 17
The Parklife Properties team won best costumes with their football-themed attire.
“The teams have an absolute blast,” Wilson said. “There’s an award for goofiest costume, and teams go all out. Year after year, people come to me and say they just had the best time as a group. It’s so much fun.” Winners are awarded coveted bragging rights and “just feel really good about what they accomplished.”
In addition to the day’s bike and boat adventuring, the race is followed by a luncheon and silent and live auctions all held at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club, with a myriad of items donated by local businesses and generous individuals.
Perhaps the most touching aspect of the event is that every year, Make-A-Wish Foundation chooses two children who are critically ill and undergoing treatment for life-threatening illnesses to be ambassadors to the event, and to have their wishes granted by the funds raised by the race. The children get to attend the event and share their stories at the luncheon.
Wilson said this unique aspect of the event is what makes it so special. “It’s so heartwarming to have the kids there,” Wilson said. “It really puts a face to what we’re doing, and it’s amazing

to hear their stories. And their involvement in the process really lifts their spirits. They get to see this whole community show up and support them, and it has a tremendous impact on their healing and their ability to get through what they’re facing.”
The race just wrapped up another successful year in October. Wilson was especially touched this year to have her daughter, Reagan, by her side, and to see Coronado’s youth get highly involved in the event. When they were freshmen at Coronado High School, Reagan and her friend Rylie Brenden got involved with the race as junior committee members. This year, as seniors, the girls were the “masterminds” of the entire race route and list of challenges and pulled it all off beautifully, according to Wilson. Over the course of their time at CHS, Reagan and Rylie also started a Make-A-Wish club. Each year, the girls organized and recruited fellow students to get involved, either by participating in the race or volunteering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
“Working with Reagan really showed me how capable our kids are when we stop micromanaging

them and let them go a little bit,” Wilson said. “I am proud to have worked with my daughter and all of the other high school students and through the course of our work together, it was rewarding to see their confidence, achievements and philanthropic values grow.”
The Make-A-Wish ambassadors for this year’s event were Edan, 15, and Karlye, 13. Edan, who has leukemia, is passionate about cooking, gardening, cats and basketball, and his wish is for a greenhouse in his backyard so he can have the freshest ingredients for his dishes. His dream is to one day own a business selling vegetables. Karlye, who has cystic fibrosis, loves reading, singing, and traveling with family. Her wish is to go to Disney World to create memories with her loved ones, and she can’t wait to go on rides and take pictures. The proceeds from October’s race will fully fund these children’s wishes.
Planning for the 2023 race will get underway in January, but the race needs your help. According to Heather Ginsky, Senior Manager of Corporate & Community Partnerships, wishes cost an average of $10K and there are currently 330 kids in

San Diego who are on the list for a wish, “all of which are meaningful, significant and special.” Wilson and her coordinating team are looking for volunteers to fill various committees to keep making the magic happen.
The Amazing Race for Coronado Wishes is one of many fantastic events that raises crucial funding for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego. In addition to this annual event, there are galas, golf tournaments, fashion shows, endurance events and many more ways to participate throughout the year. Whether you’re interested in events, corporate sponsorship, donations or volunteering, there is a place for everyone who would like to be involved.

As the multifaceted leader of United Through Reading, Dr. Sally Ann Zoll served as the chief guardian and spokesperson for the organization’s vision and mission, built and sustained relationships with stakeholders and partners, and led programs, finances and teams. In her distinguished career, Dr. Zoll’s values were grounded in education and military families. This past month, Dr. Zoll received the Angel of Honor award from the Armed Services YMCA in Washington DC, at their annual gala, and for good reason.
During her 16 years as CEO, Dr. Zoll grew United Through Reading from a small, San Diego-based nonprofit that served local Navy and Marine Corps families into a national organization that serves all branches of the military regardless

During her tenure, United Through Reading received the 2015 American Prize of the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program and the inaugural Community Service Hero Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society in 2016.
Dr. Zoll oversaw major technology changes in how United Through Reading delivers its program, from DVDs to USB drives to a mobile reading app to better serve military families. She also led the organization to becoming entirely virtual in 2014, long before the trend of remote work. Her leadership has led to successful partnerships with the Association of the United States Army, Military Child Education Coalition, Armed Services YMCA and many others.

Two women in holiday attire sit with Santa outside a store front. Date unknown. Coronado Historical Association Collection.
December is, without a doubt, one of the busiest months of the year here in Coronado. We have come to expect certain events to take place as usual, often putting them on our calendar without a second thought. Coronado events include everything from adult gatherings to those for the whole family. Have you ever given thought to how any of these events came about?
The first lighted Christmas tree was at the Hotel del Coronado in 1904. They may not have realized it at the time, but tree lighting continues to be an annual tradition some 118 years later. And speaking of trees, what about the tree in Rotary Park? That tree has grown over the years to the giant it is today, its branches now far beyond the reach of volunteers who used to help string lights.
The lighting of the Christmas tree is the culmination of the Holiday Parade, taking place each year on the first Friday of December. This is a Friday night like no other. Families line the streets of uptown Orange Avenue from about Eighth Street to Rotary Plaza, hoping to get a good view of the many entries in the parade. Of special note this year is one entry many of you know both as a school teacher and a girl scout leader: Peggy Price will ride on a float this year as she turns 100 on December 23.
Then there were the years, during the ’70s and ’80s, when parade night was really expanded to a shopping spree as well as the parade. Shops stayed open to
catch the enthusiastic parade goers who chose to get a head start on Christmas shopping. And not to be outdone, the Brigantine Restaurant would pass out small cups of their well-known clam chowder in front of their restaurant. Town and Country, the local ladies' ware boutique, was even known to deliver your purchases the following day to your home. It was indeed a night of community involvement. Those were the days when Santa sat on the front porch of his office and greeted the little children. That was Anthony Furlano, a local realtor, who loved participating with the children and enjoyed being Santa. There is no doubt that there were many very tired little ones put to bed those nights.
In many arenas, the Parade and tree lighting opened the season in Coronado.
CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 31
Santa and Mrs. Claus (Al & Peggy Laing) hold a baby during Coronado Rotary holiday celebrations. c. 1977. Coronado Historical Association Collection.
From that date on came the invitations to gatherings both large and small that would take place until the new year.
If you have not lived here long, you may not be familiar with the Candy Cane Lane tradition. In the area called “Country Club” each year, the 500 block of Country Club Lane becomes Candy Cane Lane for the Christmas season, starting at 6th Street. Homeowners dating back to the 1960s have not only decorated their homes, but each has added plywood figures painted as a character of the holiday, whether it be Santa or elves. It
has been an area where each evening after dark, families walk and cars drive up the cul-de-sac to see the display. Certainly, a sight enjoyed by all for these many years.
Some of our other traditions are definitely unique to Coronado. Where else can you ice skate at such a site as the Hotel del Coronado, with the palm trees swaying and the ocean by your side? Perhaps take your children to enjoy the snow at the Landing on parade day (hopefully this tradition will continue this year) or take a stroll down Candy Cane Lane.

And speaking of tradition, here is a thought for each of you: Ask your friends if they remember a particular event from their family which was a tradition. Some of you will find these traditions may have come with families from their homes when they immigrated to the United States. It is a fun way to spend time with others and learn more about our past.
To all of you, a Happy Holiday season, a Merry Christmas, and to our Jewish neighbors a Happy Hanukkah.

Memories of Mom Yorkshire
Pudding and Popovers
Story and Photos by Chef Clyde Van Arsdall
Who doesn't love things that rise and puff up when cooked? Especially things that remind you of Mom and the holidays. There are some special treats you may only experience once a year. Their presence at the table is part of a family tradition; the holidays wouldn't be the same without them. Now that my mother has passed, these oncea-year treats mean even more. In our house, those treats were always Yorkshire pudding and popovers. While these two items share similarities, we usually enjoy them at different meals.
Every Christmas, we had Yorkshire pudding. Mom was a bit of an anglophile; she even subscribed to Royal magazine. Her prized possession was a letter she received from a ladyin-waiting in response to handcrafting some of her Christmas ornaments for the queen. It was no big surprise, then, that Christmas dinner was always very English. The meal consisted of a standing rib roast, Spinach Madeline, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. For those of you who may not be familiar with Yorkshire pudding, it isn’t what we in the States would consider pudding. Pudding has a much broader meaning in England.
To make Yorkshire pudding, the batter is poured into a pan containing hot drippings from a roast and finished in the oven until puffed up and golden brown. The hot oil sears the dough on the bottom, making it crispy, and leaves a taste like the crust of a steak. The rest of the batter rises with the oven's heat, forming a puffy hollow dome. The pudding feels a bit spongy and tastes like perfectly salted, buttered bread. There is nothing better than this pudding to sop up the gravy made from the roast.
Popovers are basically an American version of Yorkshire pudding, except the cooking process and end product are a bit different.
Mom loved shopping, especially during the holidays. One of her favorite places to shop was Neiman Marcus. When I was a child, we dined in the Zodiac room at Neiman’s for high tea or lunch after shopping. They served their complimentary popovers with house-made strawberry butter, and a demitasse cup of consommé. I loved these so much that Mom bought a popover pan, and soon we were making these at home for special occasions like Christmas morning or Easter.

Pop-over shapes are always unpredictable.
As an adult, I became the general manager and chef of the Zodiac restaurant at Neiman’s here in San Diego, so I know a few things about popovers.
Like Yorkshire pudding, popover batter is poured onto hot grease or butter. In the case of popovers they have their own special muffin-like pan. The wells of a popover pan are deeper and tapered. The shape creates the classic popover dome and tight cone-like base. Popovers are light and fluffy like Yorkshire pudding, but my preferred condiment is usually sweet, like
the aforementioned strawberry butter. The popover pans can be ordered online or at a specialty store like Williams Sonoma or Sur La Table. Yes, one more cooking gadget for your panty.
Something savory, something sweet — what else does one need? These two sides add a ton of wow factor to any meal. There is no better way to show your family or friends that you went all out than to serve one of these sides. These do take some special effort, but that is the point. Suck it up and go for it; you

only have to do it once a year. The return on investment is enormous; these things make an impression and evoke memories of loved ones. The proof can be seen in this article as I am sharing their impact on me with you, the reader. I still love making these holiday treats, and when I do, I feel Mom’s presence and impact on my life. Cooking memories are a gift we give our children and friends. I hope you find yours; it is a gift worth giving. Happy holidays!

Neiman Marcus Popovers
Yield 12
Ingredients
• 3.5 cups whole milk
• 4 cups of all-purpose flour
• 1.5 tsp of salt
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 6 large eggs at room temperature for the butter
• 1.5 cups of butter at room temperature
• 1 cup of good-quality strawberry preserves
Instructions
• Place milk in bowl and microwave on high for 2 minutes or until warm to touch.
• Sift flour, salt and baking powder in a large mixing bowl.
• Crack eggs in another large bowl with an electric mixer and whisk on medium for about 3 minutes, until foamy.
• Turn down the mixer speed to low and add warm milk.
• Gradually add the flour mixture and beat for about 2 minutes. Let batter rest at room temperature for about 1 hour.
• Preheat oven to 450. Spray the popover pan generously with nonstick spray. (Place 1 T of pan dripping or butter in a pan, then heat pan in oven until piping hot.)
• Fill popover cups almost to the top with batter and place popover pan on cookie sheet.
• Transfer to oven and bake for 15 minutes. Turn oven down to 375 and bake for 30 to 35 minutes longer, until popovers are deep golden brown.
• To make the butter, place in a bowl and beat until smooth; add strawberry preserves and beat until fluffy.
• Remove from oven and pop out popovers on a cool rack. Serve hot with the strawberry butter.
Note: Despite the history of lunch at Neiman Marcus, when I looked up Mom’s recipe, hers was from Bullock’s.

Coronado is no stranger to the art of the Home Front. Each spring, the Coronado Flower Association (CFA), whose mission statement is dedicated to the beautification of Coronado, walks the neighborhood awarding ribbons to gardens and homes that shine.
While nothing says the holiday season has arrived more than wreaths adorning doors near and far, Coronadoans love our wreaths year around. This year, you’ll have a chance to officially showcase your wreath during Home Front Judging for the 101st Coronado Flower Show, and the Coronado 4th of July Home Front contest. In our book, wreaths are a welcome sign for any time of year!

The Bey Family home adorned with a beautiful wreath, captured by Joel Ortiz @joelphotoguyortiz.
Lori Smith, 2023 co-chair for the CFA Homefront Judging Committee offers some advice to anyone participating in our fun local contests. She says, ”I think wreaths are lovely... whether real or artificial! They say 'welcome' and add personality to one’s home. It’s always a plus to change them up for whatever holiday is coming up.”
History of Wreaths
Historians don’t know who made the very first wreath, but they do know wreaths date back at least to the Ancient Etruscans, who lived back in 900 B.C. Etruscan rulers wore wreaths on their heads as crowns. The wreaths were made of vines, branches and leaves dipped in gold and other precious metals. Wreath crowns were adopted by both the Ancient Greeks and the Ancient Romans. In Ancient Rome, wreaths were worn as crowns by everyone, but the different plants denoted the
wearer's social status. Today, Italian students still wear the same laurel wreaths as their ancient counterparts when they graduate. Ancient Romans also hung wreaths on their doors in celebration and to bring good luck to their households.
The word "wreath," however, comes from the Olde English word "wrethe," meaning band together or twist. The English adopted the Roman practice of hanging wreaths on their doors. They used them to mark important events like weddings, memorials and victory in combat. Over time, this practice soon expanded across Europe. Wreaths became a popular way to celebrate harvest time, Midsomer and other local holidays.
Wreaths became symbolic of Christmas from the invention of the Advent Wreath by Lutherans in the 16th century. They

would place a candle to light for each Sunday leading up to the holiday. This practice was soon adopted by many denominations, leading to the widespread use of Christmas wreaths we see today.
Types of Wreaths
Today, there are several different types of wreaths including:
• Rustic Wreaths: Rustic wreaths are simple handmade wreaths made using natural elements like branches, leaves and bark.
• Christmas Wreaths: Typically made with a base of evergreen branches, Christmas wreaths are decorated for the holiday with things like ornaments, poinsettias and bows.

• Floral Wreaths: Used mostly in the Spring and Summer, flower wreaths are primarily paired with flower blossoms.
• Funeral Wreaths: Funeral wreaths are used as memorials. They often use flowers, plants and other elements to express spiritual beliefs.
• Swag Wreaths: Swag wreaths are wreaths that come in other shapes besides circles.

SOUND WAVES | CORONADO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
The Coronado Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) was established in 2021 by Osvaldo Mendoza as a response to the desires of the residents in Coronado. Previously, as a member of the Coronado School of the Arts staff at Coronado High School, Osvaldo found that there were no string programs or opportunities for adults in the community to perform, and decided to construct a brand-new orchestra using his background which includes an M.M from the Peabody Conservatory in Theory and Composition. With the help of music loving volunteers Osvaldo, a conductor, composer and music arranger founded CPO.
CPO’S MISSION IS TO:
• Provide professional level symphonic performances to an appreciative community.
• Build a community base of support for classical music in Coronado.
• Promote unity and build a sense of community for adult musicians; and
• Expose the very youngest in the community to a myriad of fine classical works, thus creating lifelong symphonic enthusiasts.
54 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | DECEMBER 2022
With support from the Coronado Public Library, CPO performed its first free Debut Concert with 18 volunteer musicians at the Coronado High School Black Box Theater in July 2021 to an audience of over 100. For its second concert in December 2021, CPO held auditions to build a larger symphonic, professional sound and presented Christmas in Coronado, when over 50 musicians performed Tchaikovsky Nutcracker for over 250 attendees. Support for this concert was provided by the City of Coronado, the Coronado Schools Foundation and private donations. This collaborative financial support
lifted CPO off the ground, moving it towards realization of the dream of a professional orchestra Coronado can be proud of.
Earlier this year, the City of Coronado’s Community Grant program honored our efforts with a grant, allowing us to present two concerts: the first of which took place on October 8th, and with the 2nd planned as a Holiday Concert on December 3rd.
The Coronado Philharmonic Orchestra is excited to announce its second annual Christmas concert, in collaboration with the Coronado School of the Arts, Holiday at Coronado
Join us for a spectacular concert featuring over 50 musicians, choir and dancers interpreting your favorite classic holiday themes from the Nutcracker to your favorite holiday films soundtrack themes.
The Holiday Concert is on Saturday, December 3rd at 7:30 pm at the Coronado High School Main theater, the Coronado Performing Arts Center.
Tickets can be purchased on-line at coronadophilharmonia.org
Become a Friend of the Coronado Philharmonic Orchestra
Many of us have been impressed by the performances of the recently formed Coronado Philharmonic
Orchestra. In 2021, former CoSA music director Osvaldo Mendoza established a non-profit organization and launched CPO as an all-string orchestra. As funding allows, he envisions adding other instruments and eventually hopes to start a Coronado Youth Orchestra. We are enthusiastic about the prospect of making classical music a regular part of Coronado’s vibrant arts scene. To further this vision, you are invited to become, without obligation, a Friend of the Philharmonic, enabling you to be kept informed of concerts and future events. Earlier this year the City of Coronado, through its Community Grant program honored Osvaldo’s efforts by awarding him a grant which will allow the presentation
of two concerts, the first of which was on October 8th and the second, a Holiday concert will take place on December 3rd. Your attendance at previous concerts has demonstrated that there is a support base for this type of programming and by joining together in a more organized fashion we will be able to demonstrate to the City of Coronado that the grant monies extended to the Philharmonic were well spent and that this is an organization worthy of further support.
Classical music is not just an enjoyment of the moment for adults as it is equally important that our young people be exposed to fine music early in life. Research shows that
classical music in particular, activates young brains in a way that other music doesn’t, and it is the areas thus activated which strengthen creative ability and problem solving - both valuable lifetime skills.
One of the best ways for you to support the Philharmonic is by encouraging friends and others you may know to attend concerts and to join us as a Friend of the Philharmonic. It’s as easy as responding on the orchestra’s website, coronadophilharmonia.org and clicking on the “Become a Friend” tab.
Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season. Hope to see you in the audience!
