For the Love of Dogs

Puppy Love is not just for puppies. Animal lovers also use Valentine's Day to celebrate the powerful human-animal bond and love they feel for their furry friends. Unlimited kisses, cuddles, tail wags and love are just a few treats you can get from a four-legged Valentine, so let’s unleash the love this Valentine's Day! If you already have a furry friend, show them some love this month with extra playtime and attention. You can also consider opening your home to an animal in need, which is another great way to support animals locally. You are not only helping one furry friend, but also making more space available for another animal that would benefit from temporary shelter at PAWS of Coronado.

One sweet pup currently up for adoption is Presley, who is featured on this month’s back cover. Read more about her story, along with other animals like her at pawsofcoronado.org.

There are many animals here in Coronado looking for their forever homes, all with their

unique stories and looking for second chances. The staff and volunteers at PAWS of Coronado provide these animals with the care and love they need while they are waiting on their special someone to come along — not just around Valentine's Day, but all year long.

The 2nd annual 5k Ruff Run happening on March 4th is Coronado’s chance to help raise money for PAWS and show our community’s love for animals. Read more about this fun event on page 16.

If you are interested in becoming a forever home to one of our rescued animals, contact PAWS to #AdoptLove this Valentine's Day!

VALENTINE’S DAY HISTORY

February is usually a fairly quiet winter month here in southern California, except for February 14th, Valentine’s Day. Over the past 50 years, Valentine’s Day has become a nightmare for many a gentleman who thought he was doing what was expected of him. In reality, Valentine’s Day has become so commercial that anyone partaking is faced with expensive flowers and fighting for a table at almost any good restaurant, not to mention spending too much on a gift as well.

Go back in time here in the U.S. and you would find that early 1900s women cooked a fancy meal and maybe a special cake for a friend or husband. It held as much meaning for them as our celebrations of today. Cards were frequently handmade and were an expression of love or friendship. It was not until the late 1800s that the first greeting card was available on the market for Valentine’s Day. This special day is celebrated in the U.S. as well as in England and France, but not generally around the rest of the world.

Some of the best memories are from celebrating this holiday in our youth. Just look at the sweet photograph we feature this month of children all dressed up in fun costumes at the Hotel del Coronado in 1921.

So where did this holiday come from?

It was not always Valentine’s Day. This celebration actually goes back to Roman times. As a Roman festival commemorating the Roman god of agriculture and the city’s founders, it was celebrated until the 5th century. That changed when Pope Gelasias I declared February 14th to be St. Valentine’s Day. The first known Valentine was a priest in Rome who in 270 AD was beheaded by Emperor Claudius when Valentine fell out of favor. Thus, he was later honored as a saint and one who was known for his love and affection for others.

For over 1500 years now, we have celebrated what originated as a day to honor martyrs and has evolved into a day to celebrate love and affection. There is certainly nothing wrong with that idea. However, somewhere along the way, we have given into commercialism rather than the true intent. Think about it this year. There is still time to think of something original to do, with meaning, to celebrate. Perhaps tied to where you met or things you like to do. Let your loved one know that it was meaningful, not from the store. As you would see on someone’s ad, “GIVE FROM THE HEART.”

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY TO ALL.

POWs RETURN TO CORONADO IN 1973

released prisoner of war Lt. Col. Robert L. Stirm being greeted by his family at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Calif., as he returns home from the Vietnam War. In the lead is Stirm’s daughter Lori, 15; followed by son Robert, 14; daughter Cynthia, 11; wife Loretta and son Roger, 12. On Thursday, May 24, 2013, some 200 former POWs, almost all of them former pilots, would reunite for a three-day celebration at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library (Associated Press).

SALUTE | PRISONERS OF WAR REMEMBERED
This photo by Slava Veder shows

Iremember when we heard that two of our destroyers fired upon by North Vietnam in 1964. Our military thought this conflict might last a year or so. Our pilots from the different branches were men who were experienced as well as confident, never suspecting that any of them would be shot down or become prisoners of war.

For Coronadans, 1973 is a year well-remembered during the war because American prisoners of war (POWs) were released and returned home. Many of you living in Coronado were not even born when this event occurred. Others may not have lived here and do not know its local significance. During what became known as Operation Homecoming, 591 American POWs held by North Vietnam returned home following the Paris Peace Accords that ended U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. The homecomings began on February 12, 1973, and continued through April 1973. According to the National Organization of Former Vietnam POWs (NAMPOWs.org), which includes men who served in the Air Force, Navy, Marines and Army, only 407 remain alive out of the original 662 military POWs as of July 2021.

Following their return, over 80 of the POW group remained in military service after repatriation

until retirement. Among the medals awarded to our Vietnam veterans for distinguished service on behalf of our country are eight Medals of Honor, 42 Service Crosses, 590 Silver Stars, and 1,249 Purple Hearts. These remarkable men averaged more than five years of torture and inhumane treatment as POWs. The highest-ranking officer was Vice Admiral James Stockdale (at the time a 40-year-old Navy Captain) of Coronado, who returned home with other now-famous Coronadans, including Vice Admiral Edward Martin, Captain Mel Moore, Captain Bill Stark and Captain Harry Jenkins.

On the home front, wives of our POWs were joining forces, led on the west coast by Sybil Stockdale and many of the wives in Coronado. These women, who were asking questions of our government about MIA and POW service members, had a legitimate complaint that was being ignored. They were left to look to family and friends for help with not much from Washington, except being told to sit back, be quiet, not make waves and let the powers to be work on the problem. When the group of women took their fight all the way to Washington, someone finally began to pay attention.

The Coronado Historical Association hosted a special exhibit about these women and their

League of Wives in 2019 and 2020. The special exhibition, created by The Dole Institute of Politics with help from CHA, told the story of Sybil Stockdale and the military wives who founded the organization that would later become the National League of POW/MIA Families. It features documents, artifacts, oral histories and local items, like the Stockdale family dining table where the women met while their husbands were in captivity.

Now, as we honor the 50th Anniversary of the return of the POWs in 1973, the Coronado Historical Association will host an exhibit about their monumental return, present a variety of events to honor this anniversary and share local memories of the return of the POWs. Not only will you learn about the POWs from Coronado, but we will also share interviews with some of their children as well.

To learn more about Vietnam POWs be sure to visit CHA’s Open Doors exhibit in March. It will feature portraits and interviews of 30 former POWs of the Vietnam War from all branches of the military,

including men with connections to Coronado and the greater San Diego region. This collective group of POWs (almost without exception) turned their captivity into a defining moment in their life, a positive impact that helped lead to many of their subsequent successful military and professional careers. Guest curators Taylor Baldwin Kiland, writer, and Jamie Howren Quinn, photographer, originally developed the exhibit in 2002 for the 30th anniversary of the POW homecoming. The exhibit first debuted at the Coronado Historical Association before traveling the country to over 20 cultural heritage venues, ending in the headquarter of consulting firm CACI. In early 2022, CACI generously donated the exhibit to CHA so it could return in time to celebrate the 50th homecoming anniversary.

Be sure to look out for the next installment in the Salute series in the March issue. The series will continue through May, focusing on Coronado POWs, their return and the 50-year celebration of their homecoming, which takes place in May of this year.

Mayonnaise

America’s favorite condiment

Dukes Mayonnaise is great for artichokes.

FOOD | OLIVE AVENUE SUPPER CLUB
Story and Photos by Chef Clyde Van Arsdall

When it comes to mayonnaise, only four make the grade… Well, technically, three — one of the types has two names, depending on which coast you dwell.

If Miracle Whip tops your list, first of all, I am sorry, and second, it ain't mayonnaise — try to find the word mayonnaise anywhere on that jar. To use the word mayonnaise to describe the condiment, specific ratios of ingredients need to be met. Miracle Whip doesn't contain enough olive oil to qualify. This sickeningly sweet product came to market during the Great Depression as a cheap substitute for mayonnaise. Imitations use the word mayo or dressing. You want to avoid those products. Enough of the sweet stuff, let's talk about the real McCoy.

The version of mayonnaise we enjoy today originated in France, but the original sauce came from the island of Menorca off the coast of Spain. A prominent chef created this sauce for a French duke after his troops invaded Menorca in the 1700s, which the duke supposedly brought back to France from the Spanish island.

Popular sauces of the day consisted of cream and eggs. As the story goes, there was no cream, so the chef substituted olive oil, and a crude form of the sauce we know today was born. This sauce was initially known as mahonnaise in honor of the capital city of Menorca, Mahón. After it reached France, the name changed over time, most likely due to the French word for egg yolk, moyen, and the word manier, meaning to stir or blend.

The most prominent French chefs of the day refined the sauce, and soon it became part of the culinary canon. TV chefs insist we make mayonnaise from scratch, so we’ll leave it to them — let Alton Brown waste time with a whisk. Homemade mayonnaise separates too easily, so I suggest you buy one of the brands we are about to discuss.

The holy trinity of mayonnaise consists of Hellman's/Best Foods, Kewpie, and Duke’s. You may be wondering what makes these unique and how they differ from each other.

The story of Hellman's and Best Foods starts with a classic West Coast-East Coast rivalry. Best Foods originated in San Francisco in 1913. On the other hand, Hellman's started around 1905 in a Manhattan deli owned by a German immigrant, Richard Hellman. He sold a couple of versions of their mayonnaise out of the deli, so he tied a blue ribbon on one to differentiate the two. The blue

ribbon version sold the most, so that is the one he decided to produce commercially. The blue ribbon appears on the Hellman's jar to this day.

If you can't beat them, join them. In 1932, Best Foods bought Hellman’s and decided not to disrupt the market by changing names. However, they changed the look of the Best Foods label to look almost identical to Hellman’s design, including the iconic blue Hellmans ribbon on the jar. This brand sets the gold standard from which all others are judged, characterized by a classic balance of flavors that is not too tart or tangy, and not too sweet.

Duke’s mayonnaise dominates the South. This brand started in Greenville, South Carolina. Eugenia Duke sold sandwiches, but her mayonnaise made her famous. Duke’s uses more egg yolks than most brands, making it rich and creamy. The vinegar shines through, giving it a nice tang and it spreads a bit thicker. Use Duke’s in dishes where mayonnaise takes center stage, such as potato salad or deviled eggs. The tang will stand out rather than fade into the mix. Specialty Produce

Butcher Shop and Deli on El Cajon Boulevard carry Duke’s. I purchase it online when I have to. Yes, it is good enough to order through the mail.

Another variety, Kewpie Mayonnaise, launched around 1925 in Japan. I discovered Kewpie about 10 years ago through David Chang’s Momofuku cookbook. It recently blew up here in America due to a Tik Tok video about salmon rice. The absence of egg whites and sugar makes Kewpie unique. The egg yolks give Kewpie its

yellow tint. It contains MSG, which provides that exotic umami quality. Kewpie comes sealed in a plastic wrapper featuring the image of a vintage kewpie doll and the bottle inside has no markings. Topped with a red cap, this squeeze bottle feels like no other. Once squeezed, it seldom pops back into shape. The thin plastic allows you to wring the mayonnaise out of the bottle. You can buy Kewpie Mayonnaise here in town now at Boney’s Bayside Market; I suggest you add it to your shopping list.

Why is all this talk about mayonnaise necessary? If you invest in good bacon and expensive heirloom tomatoes for your BLT, then the mayonnaise you use better be Duke’s. David Chang’s delicious mustard seed sauce requires you to pickle mustard seeds. If you are going to all that trouble for a sauce, I suggest you use the Kewpie mayonnaise the chef asks for in his recipe. These two brands take mayonnaise to new heights, but make no mistake, Hellman’s and Best Foods set the bar. Food Beast, a food and drink publication, compiled a list of America’s top 25 best-selling condiments, and seven mayonnaise brands made their list. Hellman's earned first place, and Best Foods took the number four spot. I hope I have inspired you to try something new. When ordering a sandwich, hold the mayo — but make sure to double up on the mayonnaise.

Deviled Pickled Eggs

From the much-loved cookbook Pickles, Pigs and Whiskey by John Currence.

• 12 large farm eggs

• ¾ cup apple cider vinegar, divided

• 2½ cups red wine vinegar

• ¾ cup white wine

• 2 medium shallots, sliced

• 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

• 2 tsp black peppercorns

• 1 tsp whole allspice berries

• 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes

• 2 tsp smoked paprika

• 3 dried bay leaves

• 2 whole cloves

• ½ cup finely chopped scallions

• Make pickled eggs: Put eggs in a saucepan, cover with water, and add ¼ cup cider vinegar. Bring to a boil over high heat. Boil for 8 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare a bowl of ice water. Immediately plunge eggs into ice water. Peel eggs.

• Combine remaining ½ cup apple cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, white wine, shallots, garlic, peppercorns, allspice, red pepper flakes, smoked paprika, bay leaves and cloves in a nonreactive saucepan and bring to a boil. Decrease the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes. Put cooled eggs in a nonreactive container, pour hot brine over them and let them cool. Stir in scallions. Let eggs pickle, submerged in brine, at least overnight.

To assemble eggs

• 2 Tbsp Duke’s mayonnaise

• 1 tsp minced shallots

• ½ tsp minced garlic

• 2 tsp Dijon mustard

• ½ tsp Tabasco hot sauce

• 2 tsp freshly ground pepper

• ½ tsp salt

• ½ tsp smoked paprika

• 2 pinches of Madras curry powder

• 1 tsp sugar

• 2 tsp minced fresh flat-leaf parsley

• 2 tsp chopped celery leaves

• 2 oz Sunburst Trout Farms trout roe (optional)

• ¼ cup finely minced red onion

• White pepper, for serving

• ¼ cup crème fraîche (optional)

• Assemble: Cut pickled eggs in half lengthwise and gently scoop out yolks into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Blend Duke’s mayonnaise, shallots, garlic, mustard, Tabasco, black pepper, salt, paprika, curry powder, sugar, parsley and celery leaves, and mix until smooth.

• Scoop the yolk mixture into a small zip-top plastic bag and force the mixture toward a corner. Squeeze out as much air as possible and seal the bag. Snip a small piece from that corner and pipe the mixture into egg halves. Top with roe, onion, white pepper and crème fraîche. This last step is delicious but optional. I have also used pickled mustard seeds as a topping.

Valentine’s Day Sweets

Sweeten up your Valentine’s Day with some easy treats. We know everyone is feeling a little burnt out after all the holiday hosting, so we put together a fun Valentine’s get-together with mostly store-bought items from Vons and Trader Joes.

This party can be put together in an afternoon and will look like you spent weeks planning and pulling inspiration from Pinterest.

Trader Joe's in San Diego has a fun assortment of cookies and candies for each holiday and it is always a treat to see what they have to offer each year. We chose some yummy selections from their cheese section to make a grazing board as well.

Depending on the ages of your guests (this one was geared toward 10 year old kiddos), you can

choose some pre-packaged treats from your local grocery store like Hostess cupcakes, Ding Dongs and Hershey’s chocolates. We also chose Annie’s bunny fruit snacks because the packaging fit our color scheme.

Swing by Seaside Papery to see what fun holiday party items they have, like cupcake kits from Meri Meri or other cute signs and cards.

It is all about the presentation, so pull out your fun cake stands and platters to display your treats and grazing board. Ours are all from our shop here in Coronado.

We made our own red velvet cupcakes but you could also easily pick some up at your local bakery or grocery store.

Fashion, Fun & Love’s Season in the Sun!

The Season of Love is upon us, and whether you’re romancing the day away with your sweetheart, gathering the girls for "Galentine's" festivities, or teaming up with your bros for some cold brews, we all want to feel fabulous. What you wear depends on the vibe of your Valentine's celebration. For inspiration, I headed over to Monroe and BRADYS, two shops at the Hotel del Coronado, and put together some flirty looks for afternoon, evening and night.

An Afternoon Stroll by the Sea

Strolling hand in hand with the one you love is always a good idea, so I threw together some cozy looks to brave the breeze. For the ladies, these sweaters crafted by 27 Miles have the appearance of being knitted by hand, are very soft to the touch and fit very well with these buttery cardigans by FLY3 I gathered for the guys. The mix of neutral and bold colors adds elements of calm and surprise that enhance the mood of the day. The fun message on the hat encourages lots of cuddles and kisses and the Travel Wrap by Alashan is ample enough to keep you and your date cozy and warm as the ocean breeze dances around the sound of your beating hearts.

Happy Hour

I love happy hours and dining al fresco in the early evening, so for my second look I went for a relaxed, elegant look that suits both of my favorite Valentine's celebrations. This Lamoroque cape is designed to keep a lady warm, stylish and able to compliment this gorgeous cashmere and wool coat I selected if she has gentleman in her life.

The Blush Pink Alashan wrap adds a touch of romance. The piece is 100% Cashmere and feels lux and delicious. I completed the look with a sassy faux leather pant and, for a clutch embellished with antique gold buttons and a rebel with a cause to be fabulous, pair of pink Dior shades.

CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 39

A Night Out on the Town

Finally, I curated a look that puts the red in romance, and lends itself to an evening of cocktails, dining and dancing into the late hours of the night. My friend Sara says that every outfit needs a hero, and this dynamic red velvet blazer fits the bill with a capital H! I choose black trousers and an off-white, sleeveless cami that is light, airy, and embellished with clear sequins to help a lady shine. Both items are from the fine quality Trina Turk collection. The sequin zebra bag adds a touch of scandal and balance to this classic ensemble. When I set my eyes on this stunning party coat by Jack Victor, I felt pairing it with the red “Left Coast Tee” would be a perfect way to bring the look of both outfits together in a way that embrace the sentiment of this amorous occasion.

Gentleman, looking for gift ideas for your one and only? Any woman would love to be gifted the delightful Alashan cashmere travel wrap from Monroe. I highly recommend these creamy, luxurious wraps, which are available in many gorgeous colors.

101st Flower Show, Hollywood in Bloom, kicks off with annual meeting honoring those who helped shape it

Every time I drive home over the bridge, I am awestruck by what’s to come. To me, it is some of the most gorgeous two and a half miles in San Diego. When you turn that curve on our famed blue bridge, the bay to the right sparkles with specs of sails in the

distance. To the left, the deep blue ocean is dotted with working ships; the Naval Amphibious Base and the boat docks of the Cays welcome you back. And when you look straight ahead, the idyllic Hotel del Coronado and its signature red-roofed turret sings a sweet song. But what grabs my attention the most is the number of trees jutting up on all parts of our little island.

Coronado is home to close to ten thousand trees, over 150 different species and 15 heritage trees. Ask a local, and they will probably tell you the most cherished tree is the Torrey Pine in the park located at the intersection of Third Street and Palm Avenue. And for a good reason — the Torrey Pine was recognized by the City Council as the City's Official Tree in 2006.

Just like the Coronado Floral Association (CFA) and The Coronado Flower Show (CFS), some of these trees have been a part of Coronado’s history for over a hundred years. As the Coronado Historical Society says, “The heritage trees soldier on, nature’s sentinels that decorate and commemorate a community’s growth.”

With the same resilience as our storied trees, the CFA is looking forward to celebrating the 101st Coronado Flower Show this April. “The Coronado Flower Show started out as a way to bring our community together through

the shared love and pride of our beautiful, vibrant city,” shares Sara Stillman, CFA President. “Every spring we unite in support of this cherished tradition, which brings together neighbors and flower fans alike. I feel lucky to be a part of such a celebrated club that is so deeply embedded into the fabric of our community.”

The CFA is dedicated to enriching lives through education in, and showcasing of, flowers, plants, and gardens. Like many of Coronado’s long-standing trees, CFA has also dropped its seed to birth new ideas with each board and member paving the way for the future of the association. We have been a landmark in the community and each year, our annual Flower Show grows stronger with deeper roots in Coronado’s rich soil.

This year marks the 101st Coronado Flower Show with the theme Hollywood in Bloom. To kick off the season, we are hosting our annual event meeting, which will take place on March 10th, 2023 at the home of Ali Blake, CFA Vice President. The event will honor and pay homage to those we’ve deemed muses of the CFA — the people who built and grew the organization into the celebrated community staple that it is today.

Blake says, “I cannot think of a better way to honor the muses of Coronado who, throughout the years, have laid the groundwork and dedicated their service to making

DOG. Three simple letters. So full of meaning. Has there ever been a deeper connection than between a dog and his master? The idea of having a family dog sounds nice, but the inclusion of a “best friend” in your home is a most wondrous thing and really defies description. Your loyal companion looks up to you no matter how down you may be feeling. He’ll lay his head in your lap when you are sad. He’ll wag

whenever you get excited. He’ll lay beside you when you are tired. And, of course, he will forever chase that ball. After a while, you will know the meaning of every bark, whine and wag of the tail.

I started taking photographs of my neighbors’ and friends’ dogs during the beginning of the pandemic. While those months felt like the most isolated moment of our lives, those that had dogs always seemed a bit happier; a little bit healthier; a little bit more accepting. Is it that the type of person who has a dog is more aware and caring or does the dog bring out those qualities?

When I am photographing pets, I always seem to gravitate to the image where your dog is staring back at me trying to figure out what that click and flash is all about. He may look at you confidently or maybe with a confused tilt of the head. Each dog has its own personality and it has been fun getting to capture those loving looks in my images. I am convinced that if one looks deep into a dog’s eyes, he will share his soul with you.

Opera in Assolutamente!Coronado?

It’s not often that you see the words “opera” and “Coronado” used in the same sentence, but come February 11th, you will also have the opportunity to hear opera in Coronado. The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission, as part of its Classical Music Series running through March, brings International Opera soprano Gabriella Rodmac together with San Diego’s Felipe Prado to present Seasons of Love at the John D. Spreckels Center.

The program, officially entitled Le Stagioni dell’Amore: The Seasons of Love, celebrates love’s many phases through music in true Italian fashion. A romantic concert of Italian arias and duets from some of the most loved operas in the romantic repertoire will be sung by operatic soprano Gabriella Rodmac and tenor Felipe Prado, both accompanied by pianist, Michele Scanlon, and featuring a special guest host.

The concert gives our community an opportunity to enjoy the exquisite music composed by two opera titans: Giacomo Puccini and Giuseppe Verdi. Nothing expresses love and passion like Puccini’s orchestration and incredibly romantic melodic line, especially when accompanied by Verdi’s romantic realism composed into an exquisite display of vocal ability. Our goal is to bring people of all walks of life a little bit closer to opera. The city of Coronado is the perfect backdrop for this type of event as the city stands for its elegance, history and legacy. The vocal and musical quality, together with the beauty of this wonderful music, will be inspiring and soul-elevating for those attending.

SOUND WAVES | CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

The program has been carefully curated to represent the vocal identity of the singers, combined with some of the most loved pieces in the operatic repertoire. The concert will navigate us through love’s deepest emotions:

• “Tacea la notte placida,” from Il Trovatore, one of the most beautifully composed operas there is.

• Verdi’s Il Trovatore, an aria that speaks of the early stages of love at first sight and courting with Leonora excitingly reliving the moment she encountered troubadour Manrico and couldn’t stop thinking about him and his poetic music.

• Des Grieux, who has been enchanted by the beautiful Manon and sings “Donna non vidi mai” (never did I see such a woman) from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut.

• One of opera’s most romantic duets in Puccini’s masterpiece: La Bohème. In “O soave fanciulla,” Mimi and Rodolfo give in and declare their love for each other.

• An audience favorite, “O Mio Babbino Caro,” where Lauretta begs her father to let her marry the handsome young man she’s fallen in love with. From one act of Puccini’s popular Il Trittico, Gianni Schicchi.

• The enchanting aria for tenors: “Che gelida manina,” also from La Bohème, where Rodolfo tells Mimi about himself and flirts with her in hopes she will return the favor.

• One of Opera’s most romantically dramatic, cinematic and electrifying love duets: Mario Mario Mario! (Qual occhio al mondo) from another Puccini

masterpiece, Tosca. Love is far from perfect, and we see the jealousy that Tosca feels when she discovers Mario’s beautiful painting of La Madonna, prior to being won over by Mario’s inescapable charm.

• La Bohème’s Mimi sings a comingof-age “Donde Lieta Uscì” and decides to break it up with Rodolfo.

• Because opera can’t be opera without real drama, we have one of the most moving arias for tenor in “E lucevan le stelle,” where Tosca’s Mario sings about his last days and the fear of never seeing Tosca again before he dies.

• The program ends with THE soprano aria in all of the operatic repertoire, immortalized by Maria Callas. “Vissi D’Arte” is a true hymn of love and devotion in which Tosca implores God to tell her why she must endure the tragedy of loss and death when she’s been faithful to Him. We then close the program with a love duet from Verdi’s La Traviata where, despite all, Violetta and Alfredo sing of hope for a future of undying love in “Parigi O Cara.”

If you’re already an opera buff, seeing this program will no doubt motivate you to get your tickets early; if you’ve never attended an opera performance before, this is an opportunity to expand your horizons and get a wonderful introduction to true Italian opera. For those just looking for a unique Valentine’s experience, this is it. Please join us for one of the first times, but hopefully not last, that opera comes to Coronado.

Caring From the Heart

February is American Heart Month, a good reminder to focus on ways to reduce the risk of heart disease. Eating a healthy diet, exercising, quitting tobacco use and getting good sleep can help protect your heart.

It’s also vital to know the signs of a heart problem. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you experience:

• Shortness of breath

• Numbness, pain or tingling in the neck, jaw, back, or in one or both arms

• Squeezing, tightness or severe pain in the center of the chest

• Extreme fatigue

The exceptional emergency care team at Sharp Coronado Hospital is available 24/7. For non-life-threatening emergencies, you can save a spot in the ER at sharp.com/coronadoscheduling.
