Flowers are magical. They can brighten moods, gladden celebrations and even spark imaginations. Luckily for our town, we have an annual tradition that encapsulates the power that flowers hold. The Coronado Flower Show, hosted by the Coronado Floral Association (CFA) is the largest tented flower show in the United States. Located at Spreckels Park, this two-day event includes landscape displays, a variety of floral competitions, educational lectures and demonstrations, live bandstand entertainment, and a food, beer and wine garden with locally crafted beers and shopping. There’s even a Home Front competition which awards exceptional home and business gardens throughout the city.

The CFA was founded in 1922, and for over 100 years has been a part of the floral magic and beauty that blooms each spring here in Coronado. Our mission is to encourage and foster the love, knowledge and use of flowers — and we do this most spectacularly through the production of the Coronado Flower Show. In everything we do throughout the year at the CFA, we are committed to building a community united in the continued beautification of Coronado.

My first memory of the Coronado Flower Show goes back to the 1990s, when I won my first (albeit only) blue ribbon for a Junior Miniature Flower arrangement in the show’s youth section. My grandmother would fly in from Boston every April to celebrate the arrival of spring with me and my sister. Each year, she would bring a different vase for us to use in the competition. I know I fall into the majority of Islanders who grew up here and share similar stories of how the Flower Show has had a meaningful and lasting impact on how we appreciate our beloved town.

In this issue, we focus on the power of community. Since stepping into my current role as president of the club last June, I am constantly inspired by the level of involvement from hundreds of volunteers in order to make the Flower Show a success. We begin planning over summer, where volunteers start the nearly year long process of organizing what many consider Coronado’s favorite event. This event is proudly presented by the CFA in conjunction with the City of Coronado, a partnership that makes the show possible.

As you read this issue, I hope you find the green-thumbprint of the CFA on its pages. I hope you feel the same sentiment I feel by being a part of Coronado’s most longstanding tradition: one of kindness, inclusion and beauty. After all, flowers teach by timeless examples that life, no matter what, moves forward. Why not bloom together?

See you at the Coronado Flower Show on April 15-16!

Coronado Flower Show 10 Things You Need To Know About The

The Coronado Flower Show is a little slice of Americana. With a quaint and local feel, it brings you back to simpler times. Talk to anyone who grew up in Coronado and they will be sure to share their fond memories of the show. And whether you’ve been in Coronado for decades or days, you too are sure to feel the magical vibes that the Coronado Flower Show creates. This year, the show is celebrating its 101st year as a time-honored and treasured tradition. Things may look different now than during its initial years, but one thing that has remained is that to produce the show: it takes a village.

In anticipation for the upcoming event, Jessica Mushovic, Chair of the 101st Coronado Flower Show says, “This year's Coronado Flower Show is the result of a year’s hard work and dedication by all those volunteering. Coordinating all the different aspects of the show has been a rewarding experience and I am extremely proud of what we’ve produced. I am so excited to see the 101st show come to life and look forward to the incredible experience it will bring.”

16 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | APRIL 2023 COMMUNITY | CORONADO FLORAL ASSOCIATION
Tricia Lynn Naval is the Music Chair for the 2023 Flower Show and is no stranger to the stage on the Gazebo.

Here are 10 things you might not have known about The Coronado Flower Show:

1. It’s a community affair

At its infancy, the show was sustained by donations and local organizations chipped in to help with production. Today, it’s still all hands on deck to produce the show. It is run 100% by volunteers with generous grants from the City of Coronado, the county, and various local businesses and family sponsors. Today, there are many local organizations that volunteer to participate in the flower show, including:

• Coronado Optimist Club provides security at all exits during the show.

• Coronado Woman's Club are section chairs for the container grown plants

• Coronado Junior Woman's Club organize the children's section

• CHS Girls Water Polo Team run the food pavilion, and the profits support fundraising for the team

• Coronado Historical Association educates attendees about the rich history of Coronado

• Coronado Boy Scouts Troop 801 help our exhibitors at the pick-up and drop off locations before and at the end of the show. This is just a fraction of the people who are dedicated to carrying on Coronado’s longest running tradition!

2. It’s the Largest tented Flower Show in the Nation!

The Coronado Flower Show has been a spring tradition since 1922. It is the largest tented flower show in the U.S., and brings in guests from far and wide. Located at Spreckels Park, this two-day event includes all things flowers, from competitions and demonstrations to live entertainment.

3. It’s fun for the whole family

Whether you are one or 101, there is something to tickle your fancy at the Coronado Flower Show. Coronado Junior Women’s Club, in partnership with the Coronado Floral Association, invites Coronado youth, preschool ages through 8th grade to participate. It is an especially popular tent for all. From Zoo’s Who and bean plates, to junior designs, this tent is sure to make you smile.

4. This year’s theme is “Hollywood in Bloom”

Hollywood in Bloom will celebrate all things Hollywood — Coronado style, of course. We will be rolling out the red carpet in Spreckels Park as horticulturists, designers and floral artists alike exhibit their creativity. “The magic of Tinseltown will be transported underneath the tents of the Flower Show for a celebration like never before,” says Sara Stillman, CFA President. “We want every guest to feel like a Hollywood star as we celebrate with the magic that comes alive every year at the Show.”

18 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | APRIL 2023

5. The party continues once the night falls

The 1922 Club is one of Coronado’s most unique and special events. It is a chance to celebrate within the iconic tents of the Coronado Flower Show. “At This year’s The 1922 Club we are capturing the essence of Hollywood of yesterday and today filmed here in Coronado,” say co-chairs Colby Freer & Sam Bey. "Along with our committee, we are in the works of putting together a spectacular evening!” It’s an elevated evening full of whimsy and fun surprises where guests get to kick off their shoes in the Spreckels Park grass, and dine and dance under the springtime stars.

6. Our judges are certified

It’s more than just pretty flowers that win awards. Our judges are certified by national garden clubs. Not only do they have vast wealth of horticultural knowledge and gardening skills, they also took dedicated classes and passed a few tests along the way. Yes, they know their stuff.

7. Anyone can enter

You don’t have to be from Coronado to enter. All are welcome and encouraged to enter the show. With 5 divisions to choose from, there is something for everyone.

8. Roses are auctioned off

If you love what you smell during the show, you have the opportunity to buy the awardwinning roses. Talk about taking home a piece of the pie.

9. You can taste Coronado Brewing Company’s Blond Hibiscus Beer

Last year, Coronado Brewing Company (CBC) created a commemorative beer for the Coronado Flower Show. This special 100th

Blond Ale featured hibiscus flowers from the official flower of the City of Coronado, the Crown Bohemia Hibiscus. This beer came about through a collaboration between CBC’s owner, Ron Chapman, and longtime CFA member and Island Beer Club (IBC) co-founder, Rob Crenshaw. CBC has been a longtime supporter of the CFA and has been the exclusive beer sponsor of the CFA’s Beer Garden since 2008. All the beer that CBC provides is cost-free with the proceeds of the beer sales going directly to the CFA. “CBC has been such a wonderful supporter of the CFA for over 10 years,” said Chris Kleber, IBC member and one of the brewers of the special 100th Blonde Ale. “When we introduced this beer last year, it was a huge success. We have doubled the batch this year, and in addition to the Beer Garden, you will be able to find it at some of their CBC locations after the show.”

Kleber, who has been a homebrewer for over 30 years, invites you to the Beer Garden to try this delicious, easy drinking Blond Ale, with its fresh flower and citrus notes from the hops, orange extract and hibiscus. A perfect way to enjoy your afternoon at the Show! The Beer Garden is only available to those 21Years

20 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | APRIL 2023

of age and older. Beers are only $5. A lovely selection of wines will also be offered for $5-$10 a glass, and are provided by our local High Tide Bottle Shop and Kitchen. Cheers!

10. We take music very seriously

This year’s show will feature a full music lineup put together by Tricia Lynn Naval, a local educator, DJ, musician and community supporter. Her job this year is to coordinate local talent to be on the gazebo at Spreckels Park and set a musical backdrop for the Show as visitors wander amongst the flowers. “I enjoy seeing the community getting together: the different local vendors, guests, volunteers

and participants,” said Naval. “Just being around the energy of this 100 plus year tradition is wonderful. It feels like getting together with your family every year, and I am really looking forward to it!”

You will find Tricia Lynn on stage as she leads the Coronado Ukulele Club on Saturday of the Show at 3:30. Other acts on stage will be the Coronado Concert Band, Coronado Big Band, Crown City Chorale and a special performance at the Saturday night 1922 Club party, “Lights, Camera, Flowers!”

Our attendance record last year was over 8,000 visitors. This year, we’re looking to break that record. Are you in?

CORONADO’S HISTORIC

FLOWER SHOW

April showers bring May flowers,” an old adage that must have been forgotten with the opening of the first Coronado Flower Show in April 1922.

Political factions and townspeople had been waging an ongoing battle in Coronado since 1919. The political atmosphere had greatly strained community relations. Maude Taylor thought that such an event as a flower show would be a great way to bring back better relations within the town. She enlisted the supporhusband, local local photographer Harold Taylor. They met resistance from the town and were told to expect this venture to be a failure. Persistence won out with the inaugural flower show held in the spring of 1922. It was a huge success that was attended, written about in the local papers, and looked forward to for the next year.

So here we are 101 years later, hosting the annual flower show in Spreckels Park in April once again. From this small community affair of the 1920s, the event has become the largest tented flower show in our nation. As time went on new sections were added to the show with a favorite being the children’s sections.

26 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | APRIL 2023
A home front winner in 1964 at 526 Pomona Avenue. Coronado Public Library Collection.

One can see some very happy children each year on that spring Sunday as they leave the show with their new ribbons. Over the years, the organizers were able to get the assistance of the community band to perform over the weekend. Later the beer garden was added as well.

Since we are a community that loves its roses, one can see the pride of many entries, from both men and women, looking forward to winning a ribbon for their prized rose entered.

Judging is not limited to the grounds of Spreckels Park, either. Coronado’s houses blossom with gardens of flowers each spring in anticipation, not only of the flower show but of the home front judging as well. Every block is walked by judges for the event and ribbons are awarded. If you see people frantically working on their front yard gardens at this time of year, you know why.

Another little-known fact that bears recognition is that our local Boy Scout Troop 801 would camp out at Spreckels Park to protect the entries and the property overnight. What a fun community service experience by a few of our local teen boys.

There are so many categories that there is bound to be something to garner the interest and attention of all who come. So on that note, we encourage you all to venture out to the annual Coronado Flower Show this month in Spreckels Park.

POWs RETURN TO CORONADO

Honoring and Remembering Prisoners of War

2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of the return of the Vietnam POWs. In my ongoing quest to find out more about how the children of these returning POWs saw the homecoming and family life renewed, I interviewed two more children of these men.

Through all of my discussions with the children, it amazes me that to the outside world, they were somewhat ignored. This was the 1970s. Was it because our children at the time were still “being seen but not heard”? We may never know, but now as I look back, I think their stories are even more important than any of us realized at the time.

When the Coronado officers returned, their families were waiting. Some children were able to be at the Miramar homecoming ceremony; others did not meet their fathers until they returned home to Coronado.

One such local POW was Vice Admiral Edward Martin. He was shot down in 1967, and he spent six years in captivity in Hanoi. He remained in the Navy following his return and

served until he retired in 1989 with the rank of Vice Admiral. Vice Admiral Martin passed away in 2014.

In talking with his daughter, Michelle, I learned much about their family. During the years that Ed was gone, their mother took charge, wanting to provide as normal a life for her three children as she could. Michelle said that her mother worked hard to keep her children busy with school, after-school sports, and other activities. They were fortunate that one of their grandmothers lived here as well. The children had supportive family and friends to help them through these troubled years.

Michelle was eight years old at the time they got the news of their father’s capture. She was 15 when he returned. She felt that they were

lucky kids to have grown up in Coronado. When her father returned she said she remembered that she did not know this father with the southern accent. Although Michelle attended high school in Virginia when her dad orders, she has remained friends with many of those whom she grew up with in Coronado.

Michelle lives in Dana Point now, and comes to Coronado weekly to visit her mother who still lives in the family’s home. She also told me that she and her husband are moving back to Coronado this summer, which will be an opportunity to renew old friendships. Her brother, Peter, lives in Florida where he has resided for a number of years.

Next, I made contact with Kirk Jenkins, son of Harry Jenkins who was promoted to Captain while captive in Hanoi. Kirk and I met and talked for some time both about time in Coronado and fantastic stories of his father. Kirk shared that Harry

learned to fly and became a pilot at 14 years of age. When he joined the navy and flight school he had more flying hours than some of the instructors. The family still has the letter written to give permission for Harry to enlist since he was only 17 at the time. As a POW he was one of the first pilots to be shot down, spending seven years at the Hanoi Hilton, as it was called.

Harry’s wife Marge was then fully in charge of her three children while living on base at Naval Air Station Lemoore. The family moved to Coronado because Mrs. Jenkins knew that it would be better to be close to Balboa Hospital for her husband's return. The story of her trying to buy a house here at that time is truly one for the books.

Kirk shared that when Harry returned, Marge met him at Miramar. Kirk did not see his father until later when the men came down to Balboa medical facility for their physicals and treatments needed. He remembers how thin his father was. A 6’4” man, Harry came home malnourished.

Kirk said his dad had good humor and was always the one joking. He was mentally strong, a trait that served him well during his captivity. It was obvious in talking with Kirk how much he respected his dad. Harry had so many stories

of both the men’s time in captivity and after his retirement at age 50. He never lost his love of airplanes, continuing to fly until his death in 1995, flying home from an air show with his son, Chris. Chris survived the crash, but Harry did not.

Kirk’s two siblings live elsewhere in California, while he still lives in Arizona, visiting Coronado frequently and still maintaining the family home here in Coronado.

Be sure to look out for the next article in the Salute series in May. The series will continue, focusing on Coronado POWs, their return and the 50-year celebration of their homecoming this year.

Matzah ball soup Jewish Penicillin

FOOD | OLIVE AVENUE SUPPER CLUB
Story and Photos by Chef Clyde Van Arsdall This soup should be served in a shallow bowl to give easy access to the matzah balls.

Igrew up on chicken noodle soup. I loved mom's homemade version, especially when I was under the weather. The smell of that soup was comforting; it warms your body and soul. I knew I would make it for my children… Or would I?

Marrying into a Jewish family changed everything for me. Soon the high holidays, Friday Shabbat, and DZ Akins became a big part of our lives. Children arrived on the scene, and when they got sick, my mother-in-law, their Bubbbe, insisted on a hefty dose of Jewish penicillin — matzah ball soup. How could I argue? Matzah ball soup is chicken noodle soup on steroids!

This elixir contains everything you like about the goyish (nonJewish) chicken noodle soup version, with the addition of big fluffy Jewish dumplings. These dumplings originated with the Ashkenazi Jews, who live in the diaspora of Germania. They speak Yiddish, which is a west German language with Jewish linguistic elements. This information didn't surprise me, because matzah balls look a lot like the German potato dumplings with which I am more familiar.

Matzah balls come from matzah meal (ground sheets of matzah, which resemble and taste like unseasoned Saltine crackers), eggs, seltzer water and schmaltz (chicken fat). Depending on how you make them, there are two types of matzah balls: fluffy ones that float in the broth and dense ones that sink. Weight is a personal preference, but our family enjoys the fluffy, light version, and using seltzer instead of still water helps achieve this.

As a chef, I should be advocating for homemade matzah balls, but that isn't the case. I have it on good authority that the dumplings I enjoyed the most come from a box, and those I have made from scratch were dense and disappointing. Manischewitz is the most widely distributed brand of matzah ball mix (there is a preferred brand see the notes), and you can find this in the foreign food section of most grocery stores. The Kosher area expands and moves to an end cap when it gets close to Passover.

The instructions on the box work fine, but I like to take it up a notch by replacing the water with seltzer and the vegetable oil with schmaltz. These changes increase the fluffy factor and add a ton of flavor.

I have learned a few other tricks that make for a good bowl of chicken soup. Traditionally, the goal is for a clear, light broth made by boiling a whole chicken with raw vegetables. While this is perfectly acceptable, I like to roast my chicken, remove the meat and roast the bones. In addition, I prefer to roast the vegetables before I make the stock. This method produces a darker broth with a rich chicken flavor.

When preparing the vegetables that accompany your matzah balls in the soup, I like to slice them on the diagonal to add visual appeal; typically, you would dice or simply cut the carrots and celery into rounds.

The next trick is to heat everything separately in the chicken stock rather than cook them together in the soup. This method assures that each component comes out perfectly; nothing is overcooked and mushy.

Vegetables and matzah balls should be heated separately in the broth to ensure everything is cooked perfectly.

Keeping the ingredients separate also helps with the quality of leftovers. If you were to reheat this soup with everything in it, the vegetables would turn to mush by the time the matzah balls warm up.

This year, Passover begins at sundown on Wednesday, April 5, and ends at sunset on Thursday, April 23. Passover is a fun time to try something new; however, matzah ball soup is comforting and therapeutic whenever you make it. Mazel Tov!

Note: There is an excellent documentary on Amazon, Streit’s: Matzo and the American Dream. It tells the story of the last independent Matzo factory on New York's Lower East Side. You can buy Streit’s products on Amazon.

Matzah Ball Soup

Serves 6

Don’t go kvetching thinking this goy has a lot of chutzpah riffing on this traditional dish. Just know this is my version of matzah ball soup, and my children kvell over it. As a chef, I aim to optimize flavor wherever I can — not to disrespect.

Chicken Stock Hack

This recipe makes an outstanding stock, but I am not above using good storebought chicken stock or bone broth and skipping all the rest. Boney’s carries a good brand of bone broth, and the Wise Ox sells some they make in-house. You will need 2 quarts for the recipe.

12 cups water

1 store-bought roasted chicken

1 pound of chicken wings, necks or backs

2 large onions unpeeled and quartered

6 celery stalks cut into one-inch pieces

4 large carrots cut into 1-inch pieces

1 parsnip cut into 1-inch pieces

1 large shallot quartered

1 head of garlic halved crosswise

6 sprigs of flat-leaf parsley

1 Tablespoon of whole peppercorns

Soup Assembly

• 2 small carrots sliced diagonally a quarter inch thick to create ovals instead of rounds.

• 2 stalks of celery sliced diagonally a quarter inch think to create ovals instead of rounds.

• 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh dill

• Coarsely ground fresh black pepper

Matzah Balls

• 1 box of matzah ball mix

Uncooked matzah balls ready to be boiled Fully cooked matzah balls

Preparation

Chicken Stock

• Remove meat from the roasted chicken and set aside for the soup. Leave the wings, as there is not much meat on them; they will help flavor the stock.

• Roast the bones in a 400 degree oven until browned.

• Roast the vegetables in the same oven at 400 until they are begging to brown.

• Place all the ingredients in a large (at least 12-quart) stock pot and bring to a boil.

• Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for about 2.5 hours, skimming the surface occasionally.

• Strain through a fine mesh sieve. You should have about 8 cups.

• This can be made up to two days ahead of time, chilled then stored in the refrigerator.

Matzah Balls

• Follow the instructions on the box of Matzah ball mix. Substitute the vegetable oil for chicken fat and the water for the seltzer.

Soup Assembly

• Choose shallow soup bowls if possible. This allows the matzah balls to sit on the bottom of the bowl, which makes them easier to break apart and eat.

• Bring chicken stock to a boil and season with salt and pepper.

• Cook the carrots and celery in the stock until just tender; remove and portion them evenly into your serving bowls.

• Cut the reserved chicken into bite-size pieces.

• Warn the chicken in the broth and portion it into your serving bowls.

• Warm the matzah balls in the broth and portion them into your serving bowls.

• Ladle broth into bowls and garnish with fresh, chopped dill.

While Manachezitz is the most common brand or matzah ball mix (top photo), I prefer Streit's brand (bottom photos). Streit's potato pancake mix is pictured here, but you can purchase the matzah ball mix on Amazon.

It’s Time to Show Your Roses

Our roses are beginning to bud out and with all the rain we have had this year, we are eagerly anticipating extra-beautiful blooms. If you have previously entered the Rose Section of the Coronado Flower Show, we are looking forward to seeing you again and helping you enter your

beautiful roses. If you have attended previous shows but never entered your roses, you may recall looking at winning entries and wishing you had entered. Resolve to make this the year you show your roses!

You can access the Coronado Flower Show schedule online at coronadoflowershow.com. Read the rules and schedule before the show. Rose

entries are received on Friday, April 14th from 4pm to 6pm and on Saturday, April 15th from 6:30am to 9:30am. Roses cannot be entered after 9:30am. If you have a lot of roses to enter, bring address labels for your entry tags. Know the name of your rose. Volunteers will be on hand to help you enter your roses. Come early if you think you may need a lot of help. We supply the rose tags and the entry vessels and containers.

The rose schedule provides a class for every rose brought to the show. There are classes to enter your hybrid teas, floribundas, polyanthas, shrubs, old garden roses, climbers, minifloras and miniatures. There is a section to compete for the best fragrant rose and a class specifically for Coronado-grown roses. There are several classes for entries by novice exhibitors and a class for roses entered by children. There are certain steps you can take now to ensure that your roses will be gorgeous for the show. Walk into your garden often and pay attention to the on-set of any pests, such as aphids which you can dislodge with blasts of water. Look at your hybrid teas closely in the weeks prior to the show and remove any side buds while they are still tiny, leaving just the one central bud on the stem. You will do this as the hybrid teas in the show need to be entered without side buds and this also encourages a bigger bloom.

If you don’t grow roses, come and immerse yourself in the beauty and the fragrance of hundreds of gorgeous roses. You may discover that you too want to grow roses! The weekend is also a wonderful opportunity to ask rose questions and learn how to select and grow the best roses for your garden.

Q & A with JoJo Ruiz

The Crown City Magazine team sat down to catch up with Chef JoJo Ruiz of Serea Coastal Cuisine, the Hotel del Coronado’s signature restaurant. JoJo was featured in the January 2020 issue of Crown City Magazine, and since then, Serea has unveiled some new brunch creations while keeping some original favorites. We were curious to learn more about where he finds inspiration in the kitchen.

1. What draws you to Coronado?

I grew up in the South Bay in Chula Vista and spent much time in Imperial Beach. We would go to Coronado regularly throughout high school. The beach has always been a draw for Coronado, and the water and sand-to-beach ratio are perfect. I loved going to Coronado Beach at night with the smell of the bonfire.

2. Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in the people I surround myself with — mainly my yoga teachers, and jiu-jitsu professors and coaches. They all have different stories and practices. It is inspirational to see the passion in people in something they teach and practice themselves.

52 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | APRIL 2023
CROWN JEWEL |

3. Favorite places to travel?

I love to travel anywhere with good food, but New York truly always has a place in my heart for inspiration and the feeling of going somewhere to find peace as opposed to being in San Diego and going out.

4. If you could cook for anyone, who would it be?

If I could cook for anyone, it would be Anthony Bourdain. Maybe it's because I recently re-read Kitchen Confidential, and was reading a writer of the Rolling Stone on his jiu-jitsu journey, but cooking for him would be fun.

5. What chef would you like to collaborate with? Which chefs inspire you?

I would love to cook with Jose Andres. He’s an inspiration in the way that he trusts his chefs in his restaurants, and also seems like a fantastic human with what he does outside the kitchen. His food is amazing, and I feel like I would learn a lot, and it would be great to have wine with him and hear his stories.

6. Best meal in San Diego?

The best meal in San Diego is a tie with Anime and the Cantina Mayahuel. I've had some amazing meals at Anime, and always had an amazing time at Cantina Mayahuel.

7. Best meal in the world?

One of the best meals I have had worldwide is at Hartwood in Tulum. I went about seven years before the Tulum Boom, and we had a great meal. It was outside in the jungle, with super fresh seafood and all wood-cooked food. It was truly inspiring and eye-opening.

Books In Bloom

Come pick a bouquet of books!

This year is the 101st Coronado Flower Show and along with it comes another annual tradition – the Friends of the Coronado Public Library Book Sale, which will happen Saturday, April 15 from 9am to 5pm in “Library Park,” the park adjacent to the Coronado Public Library and across the street from Spreckels Park, where the Flower Show will be. This year’s Book Sale is dubbed “Books in Bloom” to go along with the Flower Show’s “Hollywood in Bloom” theme.

Attendees will find great deals on thousands of books in all genres, fiction and nonfiction, for adults, teens and children. Special sections will also feature DVDs, CDs, puzzles, rare and exceptional books and gift items.

“The Book Fair is more than a book sale; it is a time for the entire Coronado community to come together and share the love of reading while supporting the Library’s programs,” said Marsi Steirer, immediate past President of the Friends of the Coronado Public Library.

Please bring your own bags or boxes for your purchases. Cash and credit cards are accepted. The cost for most items sold is from $1- $8 with the exception of some rare and exceptional books that are priced higher. Proceeds from every sale will be given to

the library to continue growing great public programs for our community.

Many are not aware that the Library’s operational budget has no money allocated for public programs. That means that the Friends fund nearly all of the library’s events and other special offerings, such as the Community READ, the Summer Reading Program, the Winter Read Challenge and the Library’s art exhibits.

“All the free programs provided at the library are financed by the Friends group, and this sale provides a significant portion of their annual income,” said Shaun Briley, Director of Library Services. “Library staff and patrons are really grateful for the hard work and
