Islander PRIDE

The weather is finally getting warmer, the sun is shining, and there is a familiar energy buzzing around Coronado. Everyone is ready to welcome the summer — a season almost perfectly designed for us here on the island. Beaches, bonfires, barbecues, salt water, fresh air and late sunsets. Families in the community are preparing for their students to finish out the school year. Some are planning for graduation celebrations, tearful see-you-laters and the ever-anticipated “next chapter.” Others are getting ready to make the big transition from eighth to 9th grade — nervous, excited and wondering… What will high school bring?

It is customary at the end of something to be reflective about the beginning of it. In education, that means looking back at a successful school year and setting goals for what is next — taking a breath, remembering the “why” and moving forward with gratitude, faith and pride. Here at Coronado High School, it is the unique “Islander Pride” that we always come back to — forever building, redefining, and refining what it means to be proud of where we come from and who we are.

Historically, the CHS community has actually voiced the famous expression “We are Islanders!”

But what does that really mean?

What is Islander Pride? In 2021, upon the return from the Covid-19 pandemic, I moved from being the principal of CMS to that of CHS.

As I crossed over Sixth Street, I wondered what it meant to the high school students and staff to be an Islander. In my first weeks of professional learning, I invited

teachers to share their thoughts on the gravity of the phrase. I wanted to know everything about it — what does it look like? Sound like? How does it feel? We searched, inquired, contemplated and considered questions such as, “What is our ethos?” I asked them to provide honest input. What ideas, moments, words and experiences truly encapsulate being a CHS Islander? Throughout the year we gathered data and information, processing our relationship with this beloved place. A school is not just brick and mortar; it is a family home. A safe space for students to learn, grow and become the best versions of themselves.

Through our time together, the staff determined a new definition of how Islanders exhibit PRIDE. We are:

are strong, kind and committed. Being an Islander means way more than growing up, living or working on this side of the bridge. It means doing the right thing even when it’s hard. Making sure our neighbor feels welcome. Fostering positivity even in the smallest moments. It means embodying global citizenship, vision, honor and integrity.

There are really no other kids like our Nado Islanders. They epitomize all of the elements of Islander PRIDE. They have displayed a unique resilience and worked tirelessly to reconnect, adapt back to the school setting and adjust to the challenges of a high school career. Our kids are role models to others in how they invest in inclusivity, understanding, an eagerness to build culture and the enjoyment of being surrounded by their community members. After being in this district for 21 years, I am forever grateful for my connections with families, staff and of course, our kids. Establishing a culture of continued Islander Pride has been one of the most exciting goals of my career.

As we end the 2022-2023 school year, I not only congratulate our seniors on leaving behind an amazing legacy and embarking on admirable and exciting journeys, but I also welcome our new freshmen and returning students to our home here at CHS. Go Islanders!

In this process, we reminded ourselves that despite a couple of years of trials and tribulations, we

Student art showcased here ranges from day-to-day life on campus, to self-portraits, and various creative projects they have worked on. Students were also given the option to upload their work in the form of a YouTube video, for students involved in any video-making, animation or graphic design projects. The Beachcomber Yearbook staff was tasked with vetting through the pieces submitted to put in the magazine. With over 30 submissions, it has been proven that it is quite the competitive process to get your piece featured and published in the magazine. Olivia Parr is a Senior in CoSA Digital Arts Animation, created this short animation called, “Creature” that is part of a larger Multi-Animator Collaboration Project that will be posted in the future on YouTube.

Parr describes how the film, “shows the backstory of my original character, Betel, who is a forest guardian in a fantasy world created by my friends and I. After ignoring his warnings, Betel punishes a village for abusing the gifts nature gave to them in an effort to rebuild what the villagers destroyed. While the animals are green and the humans are tan, Betel is a mix of both palettes since he is the connection between humanity and nature in this world.”

STEM Superstars: Bringing Home the Digital Gold

It is a typical Friday night, and Mod Med Tech (short for Modular Medical Technology) members Kailani Lenert, Sean Wilbur, Jasmine Lo, and Ava Raugust are sitting around the kitchen table at the Lenert Beach House in the Cays, discussing how they are going to change the world! After a long week at school, after all their AP exams, sports competitions, robotics practices, and club meetings, these four dedicated high school students are still working. They are using their free time to create an innovative plan to help individuals in distress due

Manufacturing

to natural disasters by collaborating to design a 3D model of a modular survival backpack. This is a creative solution that uses digital manufacturing to address a crisis and is part of their entry into the 2023 SME International Digital Manufacturing Challenge.

The Team and The Dream

Each of these dedicated high schoolers brings different strengths to the team. Kailani is the 3D printing wiz, bringing CMS Robotics 3D Printing coaching experience and a background in COSA’s Digital Arts conservatory. Sean is the 3D modeling and organizational master, bringing skills from CMS Robotics Coding and Engineering coach experiences and his passions for efficient time management and keeping everyone on task. Ava and Jasmine are the video editing and research gurus, using advanced computer technical skills and camera editing to create what will be the centerpiece of the project, the video entry. Throughout the process of creating and submitting their entry, team Mod Med Tech recruited NASA Engineer and awardwinning CMS Robotics Coach Pete Waydo

CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 29

to be their team mentor. Always dedicated to the success of Coronado’s youth, Pete made himself available to the students whenever they needed him for guidance, support, and for multiple on-camera performances. The team also had the support of Coronado Schools Foundation. With CSF our Coronado STEM students had the opportunity to strive towards success beyond the classroom walls.

But this team is more than its individual parts. When asked about their cooperation and team unity, Kailani stated, “The best part was making new memories with my best friends. We connected on a level that wouldn’t be possible without the collaboration this competition inspired in us. I had an amazing time coming up with shared ideas, planning weekly meetings, and composing a project that all of us are extremely proud of.” Adding to that Sean said, “The best part of the challenge was being able to look back and see how far we came through brainstorming, multiple iterations, to one final submission.”

3-2-1-Submission!

The team worked for months, after school hours and over Zoom if necessary. In April, after so many meetings and brainstorming, prototypes and revisions, filming and editing, the Mod Med Tech team finalized their entry and hit the submit button. It was an exciting moment, and they marked it with a huge celebration. Regardless of the results, they took pride in knowing they had accomplished their goal and entered an outstanding project into one of the biggest Digital Manufacturing competitions in the USA and Canada. This was the very first year that high schools were allowed to enter into this competition, and the team was also awed at the accomplishment. Previously the SME Digital Challenge had only been available to college, graduate college, and professional candidates. Their project was a first in many ways.

Several weeks passed, and Kailani, Sean, Jasmine, and Ava came up with plans to enter another competition. Each team member was fueled with a passion for

30 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | JUNE 2023

STEM, and had a desire to continue their teamwork and improve upon their concept of a modular manufactured survival backpack, and push it even further. They had been excited with the SME Digital Manufacturing Challenge but assumed that they had not advanced. The team still continued to meet and research their ideas as the days passed. And then one day Kailani opened her computer to find an email declaring; “Congratulations! Mod Med Tech has been selected as the overall winner of the 2023 Digital Manufacturing Challenge in the high school division!” She couldn’t believe it.

WON THE ENTIRE COMPETITION!!!!

THEY

The team had done it! The four students engaged in a flurry of text messages, which progressed into a huge celebration over Facetime. The shock wore off, and the team progressed to their next challenge – figuring out how in just three weeks they were going to get to Chicago for the award presentation, during an AP testing week, to accept their awards, and attend with free passes the largest Additive Manufacturing Event and Student Summit in the U.S. and Canada!

them had been to Illinois. Jasmine unfortunately had too many AP tests to leave, but the team promised to keep her included with tons of pictures and text messages from the trip. Of course, they had researched and planned in advance, and they took time on their first day to explore some of the city’s most famous attractions and foods! First up was the Navy Pier where they got to ride the 150-foot-tall Ferris wheel at sunset. It was a spectacular sunset viewed from the top of their ride! (Insert sunset picture). Next was a blistery stroll to the much-anticipated Giordano’s Deep-Dish Pizza for authentic Chicago deep-dish! It was the perfect meal on a cold night in Chicago. After dinner, the team returned to the beautiful Embassy Suites Hotel

in Chicago’s Downtown Magnificent Mile to prepare for the next morning.

On Wednesday morning the team was up early to grab a quick buffet breakfast and head to the largest and most influential Additive Manufacturing event in North America. The Coronado High students were walking among giants at the McCormick Convention Center as they met some of the biggest and most successful in digital manufacturing. Companies were thrilled to meet them and wanted to tell them all about their new 3D Printers, Resin Printers, and Maker products. Sean, Ava, and Kailani were in Marker Space Paradise. After hours

on the conference floor rubbing elbows with the best in digital manufacturing, the team was exhausted and ready to rest before the next day’s award ceremony.

Thursday morning the team dressed to impress in matching outfits and huge smiles. This was THE big day they had all been waiting for…the SME Digital Manufacturing Awards! The team met in the VIP area and were seated among the other winning teams, colleges including Virginia Tech, Slippery Rock University, and University of Waterloo. Mod Med Teach, its four members representing Coronado High School and El Capitan High School, was

32 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | JUNE 2023

the only high school team to ever attend! It was a huge accomplishment to simply have been invited! As the seats started to fill up and the CEO took the stage the room got quiet. The teleprompters were cued up, the lights on the stage beamed and it was time. The high school winners were announced first, and Coronado’s very own Sean Wilbur and Kailani Lenert, and El Capitan High School’s Ava Raugust stood as Mod Med Tech was announced as the 2023 winners of the High School Division. They gracefully walked front and center to be recognized on the main stage of the SME Additive Manufacturing Event. It was the largest stage any had ever seen, but thanks to their robotics background with competitions and public speaking they felt right at home accepting their awards and shaking hands with CEOs! It was a lifechanging moment that is sure to stay with them through their high school, college, and future careers!

Life After Competition

For these intrepid students, this project began their journey, and was by no means the end. Kailani Lenert now aims to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering from UCSD. She loves everything STEM and will continue to coach Engineering and 3D Printing at Coronado Middle School Robotics. Sean Wilbur has decided to dive deeper into Engineering and is considering it as his future college major and career. His main goal is to enable and inspire younger students that are interested in STEM, and Sean will continue to make a huge impact on Coronado youth by coaching Coding and Engineering at Coronado Middle School Robotics. Jasmine Lo continues to round out her impressive resume with extra-curricular achievements in Golf and Volunteer Work. She aims to graduate top of her high school class and to be accepted at Stanford University. Ava Raugust has decided to pursue a STEM career, starting with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. She is a proud member of the El Capitan Robotics Team.

Please congratulate these four STEM winners, and their mentor, for demonstrating such ambition and commitment, and showing how competitive our local kids are in a national forum! Way to go Team Mod Med Tech!

IN COLLABORATION WITH CORONADO HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION

MEMOIRS OF A STOCKDALE

Once again we return to the familiar name in our community–Stockdale. Some of you may have already heard Sid Stockdale speak in Coronado recently, but for those of you who have not heard let me bring you up to date. Sid Stockdale’s longawaited, memoir, A World Apart: Growing Up Stockdale During Vietnam, was released just recently, with him speaking at the library and taking part in the even greater event later this year at the Coronado Historical Association (CHA). The talk will be in conjunction with CHA’s POW exhibit that will be on display through POW/MIA Day (September 15). The exhibit is part of the national 50th anniversary of the return of POWs from Vietnam in 1973.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Sid Stockdale at great lengths about his process of writing this book. He explained that the thought was there for some time, but it wasn’t until he retired from teaching history for 40 years in 2017, that he freed up time to begin his story. He worked on it for about four years starting with a timeline. He used

34 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | JUNE 2023
Crown City History

three sources, his parent’s book In Love and War, his mother’s diary which he obtained in 2016, and his memory of all those years when he was growing from boy to teen and what happened.

This began when two letters arrived on April 15, 1966, confirming his father Jim Stockdale was alive and had been shot down in 1965. Through their own system of communication, mom and dad managed to stay in touch. This was followed in October 1966 with Sybil meeting with a group of other POW wives which became regular meetings. At this time Sid himself was a boy with his oldest brother away at school and two younger brothers at home with him. Watching his mother trying to manage her role teaching school, running the group of POW wives, and keeping her household together brought him to take charge of his two younger brothers and their daily lives.

By the time he was fourteen he was fully aware of all that was taking place with this family. He tells of feeling so out of place at CHS, realizing it was his own fault. It was not until he went away to school at eighteen that he felt he came into his own. I will not give away the details of the book but know you will enjoy his telling of receiving his mother’s diary which became a vital source to writing his story.

His book has much to tell of his family, his transition to adult hook, some Coronado history and some twenty-five photos. It is a good read whether you are a local, familiar with the Stockdale family, Vietnam vet or just a history buff. There is something there for each of you. ENJOY!

• Carol Pastor and her family have lived in Coronado since the mid-1970s. Mother of seven girls, many of whom still live here in the village, Carol has been involved in the community over the years with the Friends of the Library, Historic Resource Commission, and most recently writing about Coronado history for the Coronado Historical Association. An avid history buff since her college days, exploring our local history is a perfect fit.

Remembering Dad on Father’s Day

Story and Photos by Chef Clyde Van Arsdall

Aromas can bring back highly specific memories. The perfume of sautéed onions and baked goods from the oven will always conjure up fond memories of my mother. The smells of breakfast, specifically bacon and the smell of meat searing, belong to Dad. The combination of fat and umami gives meats that devilish smell that can override any health concerns we may have with them.

The smell of bacon or a good steak meant Dad was home from sea. To quote the great Jimmy Buffet, “I am the son of a son of a sailor.” Dad was a naval officer and so was his father. Having Dad home was not something we took for granted. Those aromas were sacred to us; they were symbolic of family.

During these periods at home, Dad gladly gave up the bridge of his ship and assumed command in the kitchen so Mom could sleep in. He loved a good cut of meat and always knew the best place to find one. My grandfather was the Naval attaché to Paris in the ’50s, so Dad attended high school at the Sorbonne, learned to speak the language and fell in love

Make sure to sear all sides of the steak. If you sear the fatty side first, it will help to grease the pan.

Use

great ingredients for great results. Strauss heavy cream is the best; choose a good bourbon or Cognac.

Butcher Shops Worth a Visit

Most of these shops will have Father’s Day specials, so call ahead to get the scoop and dad will thank you.

Jolie in Coronado is new on the scene and is off to a great start. The butcher shop is up and running and promises to expand as time goes on. They have some fun cuts like a tomahawk steak and the bonein ribeyes looked delicious. Jolie, 126 Orange Avenue, 619-704-2467.

Sepulveda Meats & Provisions in Golden Hill was voted one of the best butcher shops in America by Food & Wine in 2020. This quaint neighborhood butcher shop is a short drive away and has some of the best meats in town. If you need a better reason to go, connected to the butcher shop is Juan Jasper, an outstanding restaurant and wine bar. Sepulveda Meats & Provisions, 1220 28th Street, Golden Hill, 619501-1878.

Swagyu Chop Shop in Imperial Beach specializes in Wagyu beef, Japanese, Australian and American. They even have a dry-aged program. They also have one of the best burgers in San Diego, with a unique twist on French fries. Swagyu Chop Shop,1002 Palm Avenue, Imperial Beach, 619-947-6360.

Wise Ox Butcher Shop and Eatery in North Park, now owned by The Trust Restaurant Group, used to be Heart and Trotter. Everything coming out of here is of the utmost quality. Go for the meat but leave with a sandwich. The tomahawk and the bone-in ribeye are my favorite cuts there. They also have a dry age program. The Wise Ox, 2855 El Cajon Blvd. Suite 1, North Park, 619-564-8976.

Iowa Meat Farms in San Diego and Siesel’s Meats in Bay Park are sister stores serving two communities. They both have a ton of retail space with various culinary goodies. Seisel’s, however, has a great deli as well. Both have hundreds of cuts of the best quality meats and dry-aging programs. Iowa Meat Farms, 6041 Mission Gorge Road, Grantville, 619-281-5766. Siesel’s Meat & Deli, 4131 Ashton Street, Bay Park, 619-275-1234.

Valley Farms Market, with locations in Spring Valley and La Jolla, has been a favorite of mine for quite some time. The butchershop is top-notch; I got my corned beef for St. Patty’s Day this year. They have specials on meat that make it well worth the dive. The market is packed with a fantastic array of goodies; you won't leave with just some steaks. They have a new location in La Jolla. Valley Farms Market: Spring Valley, 9040 Campo Rd, Spring Valley, 619-463-9595. La Jolla, 6902 La Jolla Blvd, La Jolla, 858-999-0358.

Steak au Poivre

Clyde J Van Arsdall III (Dad)

4 Servings

Ingredients:

• 4 of your favorite steaks. I like a good New York Strip.

• 2 Tablespoons of peppercorns (crushed*)

• 1 Tablespoon of unsalted butter

• teaspoon of olive oil

• ⅓ cup of Cognac** plus 1 Tablspoon

• 1 cup of heavy cream

Notes:

*I use a mortar & pestle, but a hard surface and the bottom of a pan work great. You want the cracked corns, of course. Do not use a pepper grinder, it will be too fine.

**Dad always had cognac on hand; I do not. I use 100-proof bourbon. Why? Because of America!

Instructions:

• Remove steaks from the refrigerator an hour before cooking. Sprinkle all sides of the steak with sea salt or coarsely ground Kosher salt, and be generous. Then press the peppercorns into all sides of the steak.

• How to cook a steak: Heat an iron skillet on high and add a touch of olive oil. Start with the fat edge of the steak, then sear the remaining edges. Doing the fat side first gives the olive oil a helping hand. Move to the flat sides one and then the other.

• If you want a perfect steak and don't have 100 hours of experience cooking them, use a good thermometer. Rare, 120-130 degrees, medium rare, 131-140, medium, 141-150, medium well to well, forget what I said about a great steak. It won't be great after 150.

• Remove steak from pan and pour off any excess fat but DO NOT wipe out or clean pan. This is what the French call fond, the good stuff. It is essential for your sauce.

• Pour in your ⅓ cup of Cognac or whiskey off the heat, and carefully ignite with a stick lighter. Return the pan to medium heat and add the

cream. Bring to a boil and whisk until thickened. The sauce should coat the back of a spoon. Run your finger across the back of a spoon to make a line. It is ready if the line stays and doesn't run back together. The French call that consistency “nappe.”

• Add steaks back to the pan and spoon sauce over the steak and serve. I use a hot pad and go straight to the table with the iron skillet. This keeps the steaks hot. I move to a cutting board and slice steaks one at a time as needed, spooning more sauce as I go.

CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 41
Flaming the Cognac before adding the cream. Whisking the sauce once the cream is added. Looking for a nape consistency with the back of a spoon. Basting the pepper steak with the sauce. The flat side of the steak is the most important part to get t a good sear on. Once on the final side, take a temperature, careful not to overcook.

Moving Day Checklist

Our job as interior designers has ranges from selecting materials and designing floor plans to coordinating moveins and making beds. Over the years we have refined how we get organized and have become experts on how to make the move in process go smoothly.

1. Make a move in kit

2. Define roles and responsibilities. Are you hiring movers? Are friends and family helping? Make a calendar and note who is helping on which days.

3. Make a layout of where all the larger items are going. It could be a professional floor plan or even a hand sketch but will help everyone know what needs to go where. Tape up the floor plan in each room for reference.

4. Install the larger items first. Lay all the rugs and then place the furniture on top. Next bring in the smaller items like lamps, side tables, chairs etc. This will give you surfaces to unpack the smaller items on. We like to lay out all our accessories and styling items on the dining table or kitchen island so we can see what we have to work with.

5. On the day of the move make sure to have plenty of water and snacks. Hanger is real.

6. Breakup the move. We like to take a few days to move in. First day is large furniture, the second day is accessories and kitchen items, day 3 is making all beds and hanging clothes in closets and placing the final styling touches.

Wave Gliders Coronado’s Brown Pelicans

Iconfess to having a life-long affinity for the gangly pelican. Memories of my childhood include watching great flocks of pelicans swooping along the tops of the waves during vacations in Baja and beach days at Huntington Beach. One part prehistoric and the other part grace in motion, these giant birds usher in feelings of effortless freedom and it seems that my gaze is always pulled toward them when they soar by.

Coronado has its fair share of these skilled flyers. On any given morning, one can see flocks of pelicans diving for a breakfast of Pacific sardines, the tips of their wings skimming the waves — but this hasn’t always been the case. In the 1950’s and ’60s, the regional population of the Brown Pelican drastically declined with the use of the insecticide DDT to the point

44 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | JUNE 2023 IN FOCUS | DEREK EMGE PHOTOGRAPHY

that our favorite bird nearly went extinct. With DDT banned in the mid 1970s, the pelican has made a strong comeback. Now, it is hard to imagine a day on the beach without a train of pelicans winging by. Where do our pelicans hang out when not flying up and down the coast? A large flock rests on the Zuniga Shoals Jetty, which extends 1.4 miles out from North Island parallel to Point Loma. This jetty, constructed between 1894 and 1904 to help dredge and maintain the depth of San Diego Bay, appears on the surface to be a long line of low, jumbled rocks and is a perfectly protected roost for hundreds of birds. During mating season, however, mature Brown Pelicans sail over to the middle island of Los Coronados to nest and raise their young.

I certainly hope that during my lifetime I will continue to have the opportunity to enjoy the flight of the pelican along our shoreline. With the dolphins slowly rolling along at the surface of the water and the pelicans above, I know all is well in our little corner of the world!

SENIOR ART

Every year with the June issue, we proudly showcase artwork by Coronado High School senior class art students. Four seniors were asked how art has helped them in their lives, what their favorite experiences creating art are and what advice they’d give to underclassmen who they’ll leave behind this month at graduation. Admire the incredible artwork the class has created and read about Abigail, Eva, Stephen and Stella’s thoughts on art, with heartfelt advice that the whole community can benefit from. Printed on these pages for the whole city to see, their artwork is kept preserved as a special keepsake in this issue for years to come.

“Making art has been my creative outlet. A close friend I once had, Virginia Knox, inspired me to continue my art journey before she passed away. I only wish I could show her how much I’ve learned and improved since our final lesson together when I was in middle school. Art has become such a major aspect in my life and I will forever be grateful for being led here.

Some of my favorite experiences making art at CHS include preparing for the Art & Wine Festival, the master study lessons

I learned with Ms. Hill (like Monet and the Zorn and Elly Smallwood palettes), staying late in art class after school because I didn’t want to stop creating, and especially just having Ms. Hill as the remarkable teacher she is—I am going to deeply miss this class.

My advice to underclassmen who have never taken an art class before is to simply take one, and to be patient with yourself. When I look back to my art freshman year I can see how much I’ve grown—this kind of mastery takes time. You can’t expect to perfect your art in a day. It’s a skill that takes time, patience and commitment.”

50 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | JUNE 2023
Abigail Brownlee

“I have taken art class ever since I was in kindergarten. Every year when I chose my classes, there had to be an art class in my schedule. I have taken art history, drawing, and advanced art classes, and they have all led me to realize that art is what I want to do forever. At the beginning of my senior year I decided not to apply to college and take a gap year, but at the last minute I decided to apply to two art schools in Paris. The portfolio I created helped me get into art school and I am now going to Parsons Paris.

I moved to Coronado my junior year and immediately loved Ms. Hill’s class. I took advanced art with her and she taught me how to use acrylics and utilize color theory in painting. Up to that point I had been too scared to use acrylic paint, but she helped me overcome this. Her art class is the best environment I could ask for—it is a studio full of incredible artists and amazing music. In November of my senior year I started my biggest painting yet—Ms. Hill calls it my high school “Opus Magnum.” It is a painting of a picture I took in Florence. It has been six months of work and I am finally close to finishing it. I’ve done the math, and so far I have worked on it for over 63 hours—I can’t wait to hang it up on my wall at home.

My advice? Take an art class--you will never regret it. Even if you swear you don’t know how to draw or paint, you can always make art your own. Everyone has such a set idea about what “good” art is, and those expectations aren’t real. We all have our own style and mark, and finding it is a very fun journey. So please, take an art class, listen to some good music, and paint a picture! You will look back at that picture in a few years and remember how much work you put into it, and that feeling never gets old.”

CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 51
Eva Serdio Hank Eva Serdio Hank

“Art hasn’t just helped me through my life, it is my life. As cliché as it sounds, it’s my reason for getting up in the morning and my last thought before I go to sleep. In a world that thrives off of commonality, art is a beautiful vessel to express ourselves shamelessly. Whether it’s through my drag artistry, my painting, or just dancing around in the street, my life is my art.

I’m so grateful to be able to dedicate hours a day to creating my art and to be surrounded by my best friends while also being taught by the best teacher in the world, Ms. Hill. Being able to have a space where us students can build each other up and bond over a mutual love for art is everything. I’ve learned so many things in this class that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my life.

Everyone sucks at art when they first start. The illusion that art is solely based on talent is false. It’s about dedication. Art is an investment; the more time you invest, the more profit you receive. Give yourself grace, time and patience. Don’t try to paint like someone else—be true to yourself and your art.”

52 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | JUNE 2023
Stephen Smith Stephen Smith

“One of my favorite painters, Georgia O’Keefe, was quoted saying, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way, things I had no words for.” I think about this quote often when I create art, it echoes the power and transcendence that I feel art contains. For me, the practice of making art has been a key for which I am the lock. Even if I did not always know it, I have always created art to communicate the unspeakable, to shed light on the unfathomable parts of myself. I have had many favorite experiences making art at CHS. Most of my closest friendships have been fostered through my time in CoSA. It’s also a wonderful feeling to be able to curate art shows alongside my art peers. During my senior year, I participated in the Emerald Keeper’s Earth Day Chalk Walk. During the Chalk Walk, the students from Village elementary came to visit. Seeing their smiling faces and hearing their excitement over my Manatee chalk art will be a memory forever cherished.

To incoming freshman, I implore you to find somewhere where you feel like you belong. Whether it be sports, clubs, or CoSA, it will provide you a safe space to be yourself and foster relationships with like minded people. To underclassmen who have never taken art class, I would advise you to take Ms. Hill’s art classes. There is something for everyone in art, and you’re never going to know if you love it unless you try it out. It’s alright if you don’t think you’re talented enough, you will find the angel in the marble and set him free. Even if you don’t, I promise you’ll have fun.”
