WE’RE IN THIS TOGETHER

May Mental Wellness Month is here! We are honored to be the guest editor of Crown City Magazine this month as we work to promote the importance of mental wellness in our lives. This month there are lots of community activities you can participate in; just check out our website for the calendar of events at SafeHarborCoronado. org/may23.

Most importantly, this is a great time to connect with your family, friends or neighbors. Use this article to spark conversation and take a chance on being vulnerable and really connecting with at least one other person. You have the power to change a life… including your own, so be sure to take care of yourself this month! Take a walk in the park, along the beach or just through the neighborhood. Stop to smell the flowers, watch the birds or look for dolphins in the ocean. Bring your awareness to the moment as you walk. Feel the sun on your face and the ground beneath your feet… yes, sometimes it really is the simple things that make the biggest impact.

We are so blessed in our community with the ocean, fabulous weather and wonderful neighbors. Sometimes, though, people can feel added shame for having so much, and yet, struggling internally with how they feel. This month, give yourself and others permission to feel emotions without judgment. Sometimes, naming and sharing what you're feeling in simple terms helps to better manage even the most difficult emotions. So move beyond good, bad, happy or sad and put a name to what you are really feeling.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention gratitude in this note. It is so simple that we often overlook it. Study after study shows that finding something to be grateful for has a huge positive impact. Try this today: think of someone in your life who has had a positive influence on you and how they impacted your life. Just doing this alone will be hugely beneficial. If you want to take it to the next level, call or write to that person and tell them how they impacted you. Now you’ve doubled the positive impact.

This month and every month, take time for your mental well-being, connect with others, be in the moment and show gratitude. For more tips and resources go to SafeHarborCoronado.org, sign up for our e-newsletter and follow us on social media @SafeHarborCoronado. I’d love to hear your stories. Connect with me directly at info@SafeHarborCoronado.org or 619-522-6884.

Sincerely,

In This Together

Show your support for Safe Harbor this month by participating in May Mental Wellness Month activities

Safe Harbor is championing May Mental Wellness Month again this year, partnering with several Coronado businesses, organizations and individuals to host a wide variety of mental wellness offerings. These programs are geared toward encouraging everyone in Coronado to talk to their friends and family about the importance of psychological wellbeing, and to work towards lifting the stigma around mental health.

You can join the schools, the library, the hospital, many businesses and service groups as they unite to provide mental wellness programming all month long. With community-driven events, workshops, conversations and programs that aim to celebrate and support one another, there is truly something for everyone.

Show your support for May Mental Wellness month by signing up for one of their many activities on their website, SafeHarborCoronado.org. Safe Harbor offers a myriad of programs in addition to counseling, including:

• Hour-long “Coffee Talks” are interactive presentations given by experts in the field based on hot topics and recurring issues which face our families.

• The Aloha Club serves as a welcoming committee for new Coronado families, who receive a bag of goodies and resources and, if requested, are matched with existing families for support and connection.

• Parenting workshops are designed to equip parents with the tools to manage situations that arise with their children.

• Special community events, like film screenings and panel discussions, serve to

16 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | MAY 2023 COMMUNITY | SAFE HARBOR CORONADO

destigmatize mental health issues.

• Programs for youth ages four through 18, ranging from preschool programs like “Turtle Time,” which teaches emotional awareness and management, to “Game Club,” which brings teens together to develop social skills and build community in a safe environment.

• And so much more! The calendar of events on their website will be updated DAILY during the month of May.

In the frenzied hustle and bustle of today’s fast-paced world, it’s all too easy to let our mental wellness fall to the bottom of the priority totem pole. But

given what we’ve all overcome in the past three years, taking a step back to care for our mental health — and that of the people around us — is crucial now more than ever.

“Our mental health took a huge hit across all realms over the past several years,” said Michael Tanori, AMFT and counselor for Safe Harbor Coronado. Beyond the normal ups-and-downs of childhood and adolescence, isolation due to the pandemic and exposure to social media have created challenges for today’s youth different from those experienced by recent generations. Additionally, the growing need for mental health support has resulted in nationwide shortages in providers equipped to meet the needs of America’s youth.

“We’ve come a long way when it comes to getting rid of the stigma around asking for help,” said Tanori. “But we’ve got a long way to go.”

CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 17

In light of this reality, Coronado is all the more blessed to have the services of Safe Harbor Coronado (formerly Coronado SAFE). The organization has been serving our community for 25 years. The vision at Safe Harbor Coronado is resilient youth, able to face life’s challenges.

They want to give everyone exactly what they need to thrive. Through counseling services, programs and workshops, they work hard to strengthen our community with mental wellness knowledge and tools.

One of the barriers to mental wellness anywhere is access to timely, affordable counseling services. Safe Harbor Coronado is NOT an emergency mental health care provider. However, Safe

Harbor can provide a supportive bridge of services and referrals as individuals and families go through the process of accessing traditional and comprehensive mental health care. As Tanori explained, Safe Harbor operates on a sliding scale, addressing cost-of-care issues for some, so they are able to serve a wider range of the population who may not otherwise be able to pay due to extenuating circumstances. Safe Harbor can also work with a family’s particular budget to ensure accessibility of necessary care regardless of financial constraints.

Becoming deeply involved in Coronado’s tight-knit community — and engaging the whole community in return — is a pillar of Safe Harbor’s model, explained Executive Director Georgia Chakos Ferrell. “Because we are a small

organization in a small town, we are able to keep in close touch with the community’s needs and provide services that address them directly,” said Ferrell. “Through the Safe Harbor Coalition, we meet monthly with city council members, the district superintendent, all private and public school principals and counselors, student resource officers, police and library staff to keep our finger on the pulse of what issues our youth are struggling with, what recurring issues we’re seeing and we address them in a tailored way.”

The best way to join us is to visit SafeHarborCoronado.org/May23. Here you will find the most up to date information on mental wellness events happening throughout Coronado in May. Are you looking to add an activity or sponsor an event? Find prompts on our webpage, call us at 619-522-6884 or email us at info@ safeharborcoronado.org to add your event to the calendar, or sponsor an event.

HISTORIC BUILDINGS IN CORONADO

How many times have you walked up Orange Avenue, perhaps on the way to work or strolling along with friends? Have you ever thought to take a good look at some of these buildings? Many avoided the wrecking ball and are still very much in use today. Each adds to what makes Coronado unique from other towns along the coast. Our historic business district is what makes our city special. Take a stroll with me in honor of May, Preservation Month.

This Mother's Day, explore the historic homes of charming Coronado Island while supporting community history by purchasing your ticket for the Annual Historic Home Tour. Ticket holders will walk through the doors of these exclusive private homes open one day only on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2023. Tickets are available at www.coronadohistory.org.

Crown City History IN COLLABORATION WITH CORONADO HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION

If you're unable to attend the home tour, take a journey with us on these pages. Start your trip at the Boathouse, across from the Hotel del Coronado. The boathouse dates back to the early days before the hotel and Tent City, which was centered where we see the Coronado Shores complex today. The boathouse later became the Chart House Restaurant for many years. It was a favorite spot for locals out for dinner, and now is a new favorite, the Bluewater Grill.

CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 23

Not far away, on the Hotel del Coronado site is the Oxford Hotel. It now serves as offices for the Del. In 1887 it was Coronado’s first hotel, located at 1st Street and Orange. It was relocated and repurposed many times over the years. In later years, it served as a boarding house for Hotel Del employees and sat near our post office until the hotel agreed to take it and move it to their grounds in 1983. It has been an active part of the hotel ever since.

Have you been to Chez Loma Restaurant, located on the other side of Orange Avenue on Loma Avenue? For the past 36 years it has been that fine dining location. This is another one of the oldest properties in Coronado. This historic landmark was built in 1889 for Mary Carey, originally located on D Avenue, and was moved to Loma Avenue in 1904 becoming the home of John Hizar, former city clerk. For many years, it was known as the Carey-Hizar House.

Back on Orange Ave, there is also the building that housed the original hospital. Local Maud Lancaster started running a small hospital operation out of her home before moving it to 1111 Orange Avenue in 1927. The Coronado Emergency Hospital operated until a new hospital was built at the current location on Third Street and Soledad Place in 1942. The Orange Avenue building then served as the Hadley Hall Apartment Hotel for Navy sailors and later was home to various businesses, including the Bayberry Tree gift shop and the Sports Emporium.

Conclude your trip down memory lane in front of the Village Theater. 1947, this art deco and rather extravagant theater came to Coronado. During the '70s and early '80s, it even had Saturday morning shows for the kids. A quarter sent your kids to the movies for the morning. It was also known for its first-run movies until its closing in 2000. During that last year of operation, it was hard to find two seats together that were in good working order. If you came early enough, with the lights still on, your friends would yell out to give you a location for a pair of seats. The theater was vacant until 2011, when it was beautifully restored and repurposed into three theaters. It is now the site of the annual film festival.

As you walk through historic Coronado, remember that May 14th is Mother's Day and the return of the Annual Historic Home Tour. Be sure to get your tickets from the Coronado Historical Association (www.coronadohistory.org) so you can explore the inside of one of Coronado’s many beloved historic homes. I have it under good authority that this year is one you will not want to miss, with exclusive access to homes along Glorietta Boulevard. What a treat!

• Carol Pastor and her family have lived in Coronado since the mid-1970s. Mother of seven girls, many of whom still live here in the village, Carol has been involved in the community over the years with the Friends of the Library, Historic Resource Commission, and most recently writing about Coronado history for the Coronado Historical Association. An avid history buff since her college days, exploring our local history is a perfect fit.

POWs RETURN TO CORONADO

Honoring and Remembering Prisoners of War

Coronado Woman Fought for Those Missing in Action

It was September 1969, and only one month after the Woodstock Festival. A loaf of bread cost 23 cents, a gallon of milk was $1.10 and six cents would buy a first-class postage stamp. America had just put a man on the moon.

But none of that mattered much to Pat Mearns. She wanted to know what had happened to Art, her husband, a major in the U.S. Air Force.

She didn’t know much other than the fact that his F-105 plane had not returned from a mission. Pat and her two young daughters, Missy and Frances, remained in their home for a few weeks at the Yokota Air Base in Japan, where they had been living while Art flew missions. But when no further word came, she moved the family back to her native California, taking a job on the cardiac floor at Los Angeles County Hospital where she had attended nursing school.

As a military wife, Pat believed her government was doing all it could to learn about Art’s fate. As time went by at an agonizing pace with no further word about Art’s fate, she was increasingly irritated and felt the North Vietnamese government was not forthcoming. As time wore on with little information from military officials, her confidence began to fade. Wives were supposed to be as loyal to the Air Force as their husbands, but the tormenting and continuing silence made her question everything. It was also a time of seismic political unrest in America. Yet Pat could never forget the horror she felt watching footage of barefoot and tortured American POWs in the Hanoi March several years prior. “Seeing two men I knew barefoot, bleeding and bandaged made me so mad,” she said. When she first heard the North Vietnamese vowed to put American pilots on trial for war crimes, she was terrified. Pat vowed to do something.

Taking matters into her own hands, she voiced her questions and concerns about the plight of missing U.S. servicemen in Southeast Asia to her elected officials. Leaving Missy and Frances in the care of her parents, she packed a bag and headed for Washington, D.C. Never before had military families had to take diplomatic matters into their own hands, she thought.

28 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | MAY 2023 SALUTE | PRISONERS OF WAR REMEMBERED
Lt. Col. & Mrs. Mearns attend an event.

Camped out in the downtown office of a relative, Pat made meticulous lists of all the members of the House and Senate, and then, typed letters to each one on her spiffy silvery blue typewriter, a gift from her mother. First she mailed the letters, then waited patiently for staffers to call and make appointments. Visiting the halls and offices of Congress, she spoke to anyone who would listen to her pleas on behalf of missing American servicemen and their families.

Her efforts didn’t end in our nation’s capital. Pat and other wives of POWs and missing servicemen traveled to France to confront North Vietnamese officials at the Paris Peace Talks.

“What did we have to lose?” she recalled. “We were determined to find out what happened to our men.”

The women were on their own; the U.S. government had warned they would receive no help or support from their government.

Pat and other MIA wives then hatched an even bigger plan. With assistance from Bob Dornan, then a Southern California radio host, the women left on a round-the-world trip in 1970 to meet with world leaders. Their mission was to convince them to plead with the North Vietnamese to provide a full accounting of America’s missing men. The women also demanded regular mail exchanges and medical treatment. But their battles were hard-fought and hard-won. Eventually, persistence paid off and the release of POW issue became the only victory of the Vietnam War.

Pat’s personal story is one of resilience. Being eyed suspiciously by her banker when she cashed her husband’s monthly paycheck, and chased around the desk by congressional male staffers when all she wanted was to discuss the missing servicemen, only strengthened her resolve.

It was a difficult and bittersweet day when the first POWs returned to America in 1973. Pat was relieved for the families welcoming home loved ones. But she cried long and hard when her beloved Art wasn’t one of them.

Now in her ninth decade, Pat remains unafraid to face challenges, but is only now beginning to realize

the impact of the work undertaken by a handful of military wives. She has great recall, a fondness for the arts, a fierce devotion to family and friends and a hallmark passion for doing the right thing.

Taste the World Service:

It’s All About Giving Back

This past weekend, I took a trip around the world and got my passport stamped 21 times. This adventure wasn't an actual trip, but a culinary experience offered by the San Diego Peace Corps Association (SDPCA).

The event was called Taste the World, and it took place in a beautiful community garden in North Park, operated by MAKE Projects. All the money raised went to the SDPCA for its various philanthropic projects.

The SDPCA is composed of people who once served in the Peace Corps. The experience featured various association members sharing a soup or stew from the country where they worked, resulting in 21 different offerings.

As guests entered the garden, they were given a bowl with a spoon and a passport. The passport listed the various countries and the corresponding soup or stew. The idea was to get your passport stamped each time you tried a dish.

FOOD | OLIVE AVENUE SUPPER CLUB
Story and Photos by Chef Clyde Van Arsdall The MAKE Projects garden in North Park where Taste the World was held.

It was so much fun going from table to table, talking with the volunteers about the dish they had made and the county where they had served. I enjoyed all of them, but for me, the Squash and Peanut Stew from West Africa, the Pumpkin Tomato Curry from India and the Dahl from Nepal stood out.

Some soups and stews came with rice or exciting toppings such as shaved coconut or roasted peanuts, and others with spicy sauces and chutneys. You could taste the love in each offering. It was evident that the food of these countries had impacted the people who had experienced the cuisine firsthand.

What a fun way to raise money! The Peace Corps is such a noble calling. Georgia Chakos and Colleen Patricia Garrett, who work at Safe Harbor Coronado, both served with this organization and are why I attended this delicious event. After dedicating themselves to the Peace Corps, it is no mystery why they have chosen now to serve Coronado through the essential works of Safe Harbor.

Georgia, Coronado High School (CHS) class of ’85 serves as the executive director of Safe Harbor. When she was a young woman right out of college, she joined the Peace Corps, trained first in Senegal, then served in the Ivory Coast. She recently hired Colleen, who also served in the Peace Corps in Cape Verde off the coast of West Africa.

Besides working at Safe Harbor, Colleen, CHS class of ’97, is president of the San Diego Peace Corps Association. She shared with Georgia that her organization was hosting the tasting event to raise money for her local chapter.

Taste the World was a no-brainer — donating to a worthy cause while sampling diverse soups and stews. Sign me up!

I feel selfish telling you about this delicious event after the fact, but never fear; this was the sixth year they have organized Taste The World, so I am sure they will hold the event again next year. While we eagerly await its return, I have discovered a similar way to enjoy a fantastic meal while contributing to another noble cause.

MAKE Projects was generous enough to allow the SDPCA to host the event in their community garden. The organization also operates a cafe on Thursdays and Saturdays in the same beautiful setting, the MAKE cafe. The establishment offers job training that provides real-world, hands-on, paid work experience for low-income refugee and immigrant women and youth, many of whom have never worked in the United States.

The community garden provides a lot of food for the cafe. The menu has offerings from over 26 countries and dishes inspired by the many fantastic refugee and immigrant women who work in the garden and restaurant.

While you plan your culinary trip to next year's Taste the World event, we can all support MAKE Projects, no passport necessary. This charming outdoor garden experience is one of a kind and makes a real difference in people's lives.

• MAKE cafe is open Thursdays from 5:307:30pm and Saturdays from 10am-1pm. For more information, go to sdmake.org.

• Georgia, Colleen and the rest of the Safe Harbor team have partnered with the community

West African Peanut Soup with Chicken

Georgia enjoyed a version of this soup while in the Ivory Coast Mark Bittman, New York Times

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

• ¾cup roasted and shelled peanuts

• 2 tablespoons peanut or neutral oil, like grapeseed or corn

• 1 medium red or white onion, chopped

• 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger

• 1 tablespoon minced garlic

• ½ pound skinless, boneless chicken (about 2 thighs or breasts) cut into chunks

• Pinch of cayenne

• Salt

• Freshly ground black pepper

• 6 cups stock or water

• 2 sweet potatoes or yams (about 1 pound), peeled and cut into thick slices

• 8 plum tomatoes, cored and halved (canned are fine; drain and reserve liquid for another use)

• ½ pound collards or kale, washed and cut into wide ribbons

• ¼ to ½cup peanut butter, chunky or smooth

Instructions

• Chop peanuts, crush them with the side of a knife, or pulse them in a food processor to chop roughly.

• Put oil in a deep skillet or medium saucepan over medium heat; a minute later, add onion, ginger, and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is soft, 3 to 5 minutes. Add chicken and continue cooking for 3 or 4 minutes until just coloring. Add ½ cup peanuts and the cayenne and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

• Stir in the stock and sweet potatoes, boil and gently turn the heat down to medium-low so the soup bubbles. Stir in tomatoes and collards, then cook, occasionally stirring, until chicken is cooked through, about 10 minutes.

• Stir in ¼ cup peanut butter. Taste, adjust seasoning (you may want to add more peanut butter at this point), and serve, garnished with remaining peanuts.

This is Colleen’s meatball version of Moroccan Merguez sausage. She fell in love with Moroccan culture and cuisine traveling there while in the Peace Corp.

Moroccan Meatballs for a Party

Yield: 40-50 1-ounce meatballs

Meatballs

Ingredients:

• 1.5 pounds of ground dark meat chicken

• 1 pound of ground beef

• 1 large head of garlic chopped fine

• ½ bunch of a mixture of fresh parsley, mint and cilantro chopped. Not a bunch of each (you can adjust the mix, you decide what feels right)

• 1 ½ teaspoons each of paprika, cumin, fennel and cinnamon

• 1/4 cup of Harissa paste (buy pre-made in a jar)

Instructions:

• Mix everything completely — no fillers needed! No eggs or breadcrumbs!

• Wet your clean hands with ice-cold water (do this repeatedly, so the meat doesn't stick to your hands) and roll 1-inch round balls (pingpong sized); place on parchment-lined baking sheets.

• Bake the meatballs for 20 minutes at 400 degrees.

Sauce

Ingredients:

• 1 14.5 oz can of diced tomatoes

• ½ 6 oz can of tomato paste

• ½ 15 oz can of tomato sauce

• 1/2 cup of peanut butter (I use the smooth, fresh ground kind — lots of yummy oil)

• ¼ cup of harissa paste

• 1/2 bunch of a mixture of fresh parsley, mint and cilantro, chopped. Not a bunch of each (you can adjust the mix, decide what feels right)

• 1.5 teaspoons each of paprika, cumin, fennel and cinnamon

Instructions:

• Stir the meatballs into the sauce and serve hot from the pot or crockpot.

Colleen's Notes:

• Traditionally served with couscous, these meatballs are also super yummy on a baguette sandwich.

• I like a nice Mediterranean-style salad on the side for a complete meal.

• I buy mine at Vine Ripe Market in La Mesa, a Turkish-owned market with all the ingredients needed for this recipe – check out their website, vineripefoods.com.

Spice Up Your Spice Drawer

With the warmer temperatures and blooming flowers, we are delighted that spring is in full swing. We started our spring cleaning off right this year by tackling the spice drawer. It was a mess of different sized bottles and labels that made finding anything a challenge.

Did you know that spices have an expiration date? Before you start organizing, make sure you check the bottles and throw anything out that has expired.

1. Uniform Jars: We went with a clear jar with a white lid for a clean and simple look.

2. Pretty Labels: Nothing makes our hearts happier than clean, legible labels. With a cohesive look, it makes it easier to find what you are looking for and makes you want to stare lovingly at your spice drawer all day.

3. Make sure to write the expiration date on the back label of the new bottles so you know when it is time to replace the spices.

LIFESTYLE | BUNGALOW 56

You can put this same method to use in the rest of your kitchen, finding clear organizational bins and labeling them with uniform labels. This advanced level of tidy can change your entire mood when opening up doors and drawers in your kitchen.

Cluttered, messy spaces can feel overwhelming and cause unneeded frustration when you need to make a meal or find something you’ve been looking for. We suggest picking one small area or drawer at a time to tackle your spring cleaning. Pick an area you use most, like your kitchen, and tthen move room by room nd choose small spaces to work your way through. This is the most effective way to organize, and we use this method often when installing items in our clients' homes. Choose one space and finish it before moving on to the next area. When everything has a clearly labeled place, it will be easier to maintain order and cleanliness.

Happy spring cleaning!

Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Home Front Judging (HFJ) contest! This annual tradition brings the whole community together to help make our island even more beautiful than it already is. This contest would not be possible

without the many volunteers involved. Home front judges award homes, schools, churches, municipal buildings, parks and businesses with blue, red and yellow ribbons. This year, green ribbons were also given for earth friendly homes.

Lori Smith and Kelly Kindorf, Co-Chairs of the 2023 Coronado Floral Association’s Home Front Judging reflected on another fun contest. “Our Volunteers were out in full force last week, happily awarding ribbons and taking advantage of the sunny weather. The Community answered the challenge and beautified their gardens. With our recent rains, everything (save some Roses) was in full bloom. This year we saw so much green! Bushes, trees, leafy flowers and succulents, all were thriving. We are so grateful to all our 2023 Volunteers who made HFJ a success.”

We hope interest in Earth Friendly home fronts continues to grow as it saves homeowners time and money while benefitting our local soil, water supply and biodiversity.”

Use this handy map to see these stunning landscapes for yourself! No doubt you will gain plenty of inspiration for the many ways to spruce up your own garden. Many residents start preparing for this fun contest well in advance, making the beauty last all year.

A big thank you goes out to all of the volunteers who made this contest a success this year. If this sounds like fun to you, consider joining the Coronado Floral Association for year-round gardening fun that culminates with the HFJ competition and of course, the annual Coronado Flower Show each spring.

This year promises to be bigger and better than ever with over 75 local and international artists, three separate wine areas, samples from the best local eateries, live music on the main stage, including local bands and student performances, an art auction and an interactive youth art area. It’s an event that promises to be fun for the entire family!

This event kicks off the Art & Wine Festival, a celebration of food, wine and culture, bringing together the best Coronado has to offer.

Meet Inocente

Inocente discovered her passion for art when she was 12 years old as a homeless teen living in San Diego. Since then, she has participated in world-renowned art shows, had an Oscar-winning documentary made about her and continues to paint and work with organizations that bring art to kids and teens. Her story is an inspiration. Don’t miss meeting her on May 13th at the festival.

Mother’s Day Style and Fun in the Sun!

Photos by Joel Ortiz

Spring has sprung, the sun is shining, hydrangeas are in bloom and the breeze off of the ocean is calling. It is as though Hollywood and nature have conspired to create this glorious setting just in time for Mother’s Day!

Feeling inspired, I invited the beautiful Castiglione family for an early Mother’s Day Celebration on the beach.

50 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | MAY 2023 FASHION | ISLAND STYLE
Photos by Joel Ortiz

As a stylist, I am always excited to create a look that fits any occasion. For our celebration, I curated a light and airy coastal vibe. For the color palette I choose crisp whites, soft blues and beachy beiges, as they mirror the colors of a wave as it crests and washes up to the sandy shore. To evoke both comfort and elegance, I aim for textiles of 100% linen, cotton and cashmere. Adding straw hats and sweeping totes add whimsy and fun, so I threw some of those in the mix. Finally, a stunning pair of shades sprinkle a dash of glamour and luxury.

CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM 51

Beautiful Janet Castiglione is a youthful, modern and playful Grandma who prefers to be called Granny by her Grandkids. Her outfit was composed of a white blouse and beige drawstring pant. Both are linen and made by Haris Cotton from Greece. I topped off her look with a tan L*Space bucket hat and a pair of sunglasses made of tortoise shell, with antique gold accents designed by KREWE. Granny Janet rocked those shades and exuded international flair and elegance.

Mom Courtney always leads with a big “let’s play” smile, and I wanted her ensemble to reflect her young, fun personality, so I pulled together a white cotton midi dress by Mare-SOLE-Amore. Draped over her shoulders is a capri blue and white woven cotton sweater by Wooden Ships — perfect for a breezy day. I added a wide brimmed, two-toned sunhat adorned with a starfish detail from Tommy Bahama and generous white tote by Sarah Stewart. The tote is made

of plastic, which is easy to rinse after a beach day, and helps to keep its shape. I finished her look with a pair of navy-blue hexagon shaped Tory Burch sunglasses with golden bamboo accents. These shades are absolutely divine, and added sophistication and surprise to this beachy ensemble. Courtney looked breathtaking and effervescent as we headed to the beach with her adorable children, Saylor (6), Isla (5) and Krew (2), all adorned with clothing from Janie and Jack to celebrate and play in.

For me, a perfect outfit has to have a combination of form and function, and these looks fit that concept. Sun hats for protection, large totes to carry all the basics to the beach and clothing made of breathable, natural textures that are suitable for either relaxation or play, and look graceful and effortlessly put together. For sure these looks suited our celebration, which was wonderfully playful and full of fun!

All of the clothing and accessories featured here are available at Weekends, a women’s clothing store located in the lower lobby of the Hotel Del Coronado. I also included some cute sandals and flats that complement the look available at Sweet Soles on 957 Orange Avenue in Coronado.

How to Spot a Stroke

Sharp Coronado Hospital is nationally recognized for the high level of care provided to patients having a stroke.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month. Remember “BE FAST” to help identify the signs of a stroke:

B — Balance: Sudden loss of balance

E — Eyes: Blurry vision or loss of vision in one or both eyes

F — Face: Facial weakness or drooping on one side of the face, or uneven smile

A — Arms: Arm or leg weakness or numbness on one side of the body

S — Speech: Altered speech, slurring or inability to speak or find the right words

T — Time: Act fast and call 911

Every minute counts when a stroke happens. Call 911 right away if you see signs of stroke in yourself or someone else. Tell the operator you think the person is having a stroke. Paramedics will be better prepared to help them, and the hospital can prepare for their arrival.

Visit sharp.com/coronado to learn more about our exceptional care.
