Madeline Di Nonno, Doug St. Denis, Geena Davis and Merridee Book at the CIFF 2022 Gina Davis book event.

It is my greatest joy to be the guest editor for the third year in a row, as we kick off the 8th annual Coronado Island Film Festival (CIFF) November 8-12, 2023! Every month, Crown City Magazine perfectly captures the uniqueness of Coronado and the stories that weave the fabric of the community and our rich, diverse history together. As part of that fabric, CIFF is proud to have the city as the backdrop for an international film festival. Every fall, we gather over a hundred filmmakers, industry leaders and attendees from all over the country and beyond for a cinematic celebration! Five jampacked days of curated programming feature independent and studio films, compelling panels, documentaries, parties, culinary cinema, special engagements and our ShortsFest — all open to the public to join the fun. The festival falls over the Veterans Day holiday and every year it's our honor to recognize the sacrifice and valor of our veterans and their families. This year we are screening a powerful documentary The Gift, as our Salute to Veterans program. This film is free to all veterans and active military. Other festival highlights include the Leonard Maltin Industry Tribute Awards Gala, an evening where we honor an accomplished array of Academy Award-winners, nominees and industry trailblazers. This year, a strong female filmmaker showcase brings us Director Sara Freidman's Heightened, Director Robin Givens' The Nana Project, Director Vivian Kerr's Scrap and Director Lagueria Davis' Black Barbie. Every year, certain poignant cultural themes rise to the top and this year's Oppenheimer After Trinity and Downwind focus on the impact of nuclear weapons. Representation in films and entertainment has brought us powerful films by BIPOC directors and producers. Our strong lineup of narrative features run across genres from art house, quirky comedies and family dynamics to drama and dark thrillers. The documentaries are compelling, educating and inspiring, including Humanity Stoked that you can read more about on page 56. Cinematic stories bring us together through our shared experiences, so come see films that you would never see anywhere else, meet the filmmakers, create unforgettable memories and find new friends who share a love of film! Badges are on sale now on our website, including day passes and single tickets! See you on the Red Carpet! Merridee Book CEO + Artistic Director Coronado Island Film Festival

or over 100 years, Hollywood filmmakers, celebrities and producers have flocked to Coronado to film, work, play and be inspired. The Coronado Island Film Festival [CIFF] is proud to be part of the Island’s cinematic legacy and is ready to roll out the red carpet for its 8th season from November 8-12, 2023. Red Carpet Films and San Diego premieres include the Centerpiece Feature, Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story. A nod to his mother’s love, the Amazon Studios and Bekele Films documentary is an intimate portrait of visionary Tyler Perry, following his harrowing road to the top of an industry that didn’t always include him. One of the featured Closing Night films, Common Ground, narrated by Laura Dern, is an uplifting story of the pioneers of the “Regenerative Movement” who are forgoing the toxic products pushed by Big Ag in order to produce nutritionally dense food and revive our ecosystem. A Culinary Cinema series will be held on Friday, November 10, featuring the documentary, Susan Feniger. career of her life partner: iconic culinary artist, author and entrepreneur Susan Feniger, who has cooked for everyone from Barack Obama to Lady Gaga. Following the film will be a demo with tastings from Susan and her famed restaurant, Border Grill. A second culinary event focuses on sustainability with a screening of Shannon Morrell’s compelling short Spear. Spatula. Submarine. A Q+A discussion will follow the film with Amy Steward, founder of Emerald Keepers and Meghan McKee, head chef at the Coronado Yacht Club. A special Vans and Wahoo’s pre-party will be held prior to the screening of Humanity Stoked on Sunday, November 12 with Steve Van Doren, Vice President of Marketing and Special Events for Vans (Steve is the son of Vans Co-Founder Paul Van Doren), and Wing Lam, co-founder

of Wahoo's Fish Tacos. The documentary features professional skateboarders Tony Alva, Lizzie Armanto and San Diegan Tony Hawk, among others. The film is about the beauty of overcoming fear and other challenges facing humanity as seen by icons of pro skating, science, art, music, activism and education, all of whom share experiences and perspectives shaped by their love of skateboarding. A Q&A will follow the film with Director Michael Ien Cohen, Lizzie Armanto and Tony Alva focusing on understanding fear, depression, addiction, education, activism, philanthropy, racism, sexism, homophobia and the environment. Other featured films include Past Lives, written and directed by Celine Song in her feature directorial debut. Starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro, the film follows Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends who

are wrested apart after Nora's family emigrates from South Korea. Twenty years later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront notions of love and destiny. Isle of Hope, a film that follows Victoria (Mary Stuart Masterson), a university professor with a grudge against her self-absorbed mother, the famed actress Carmen Crawford (Diane Ladd), for crushing her dreams of becoming a playwright. When Carmen suffers a life-threatening stroke and wakes up thinking she is living 15 years in the past, Victoria is given a unique opportunity to figure out where her life went off track and reconcile her relationship with her mother. Diane Ladd will be in attendance and will participate in a Q&A following the film moderated by Leonard Maltin. The Nana Project from Director Robin Givens (Riverdale, Batwoman TV Series) is set in the competitive world of chess following Nana’s (Academy Award® Winner Mercedes Ruehl) journey in a heartwarming feelgood comedy about reuniting her grandsons and supporting her retirement community. CIFF will host the annual ShortsFest, this year featuring 12 creative, provocative and entertaining shorts tracks. The Shorts kick off on Thursday morning with a Local Spotlight featuring local personalities, filmmakers and compelling stories. 18

Hosted over Veterans Day weekend, it is tradition for the festival to honor our military heroes with an annual Salute to Veterans program. This year, CIFF will host a special presentation screening of The Gift, the story of Medal of Honor recipient, Corporal Jason L. Dunham and the Marines of Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines on November 10th. It is a story of courage, sacrifice and love. Additionally, a profound and moving Vietnam Wings tribute sculpture will also be on display throughout the festival weekend in the lobby of the Coronado Performing Arts Center, courtesy of CJ Machado’s Purple Foxes. Various Special Engagements will take place including historian Tim Reid’s discussion of the historic Hollywood and Coronado connection through actress Olivia de Havilland. Local Coronadan, Christian Esquevin will host a presentation of his new book, Designing Hollywood: How the Studio Wardrobe Department Created the Image of Golden Age Movie Stars. The book showcases the designers who dressed Hollywood's stars from the late 1910s through the 1960s and the unique symbiosis they developed with their studios in creating iconic looks. Studio by studio, Esquevin details the careers of designers like Vera West, who worked on Universal productions such as Phantom of the Opera (1925), Dracula (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1931); William Travilla, the talent behind Marilyn Monroe's dresses in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) and The Seven Year Itch (1955); and Walter Plunkett, the Oscar-winning designer for film classics like Gone with the Wind (1939) and An American in Paris (1951). Featured Panels include a War Photojournalist panel discussing what it means to be on the frontlines behind a camera lens and the harsh

realities of what they witness, personally process, and report back to the world. The Women on the Move Panel will highlight the influence and impact of women in the industry and how it continues to reshape, redefine and reimagine the industry. The Representation Rising Panel will take apart the misconceptions of people with disabilities, and the importance of representation — whether it be race, gender or protected status, on the creative and innovative contributions to the entertainment industry. The Embracing Change - The Future of Entertainment Panel will feature industry experts discussing the state of the entertainment industry, from shifts in audience viewing habits, emerging technologies, representation and sustainable productions to making room for the next generation of filmmakers. The panel will be followed by a guided Q&A and a candid breakout session for an honest exchange between the panelists, filmmakers in the audience and those hoping to enter the industry. CIFF’s programming team and the festival's CEO & Artistic Director since 2019, Merridee Book, have selected films from every genre that will be showcased throughout the festival. Studio and independent films, student and indie films, engaging panels, parties and of course the premiere event, the Leonard Maltin Industry Awards Gala, hosted this year at Loews Coronado Bay Resort & Spa’s Commodore Ballroom, will take place over the five-day festival. Prior to her work with CIFF, Merridee served as the Vice President of a Development with the San Diego International Film Festival and has a storied career that spans the entertainment industry,

publishing and producing. She is a strong supporter of the Arts and currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Patrons of the Prado. CIFF first launched in 2016 and was founded by Coronado native, Doug St. Dennis. Doug was partially raised in Coronado, born into a distinguished Navy family that spans six generations. It was there she took dance lessons and was a member of Junior Theater where she acted and painted sets at the original Coronado Playhouse on the Strand. Throughout her life, she moved around a bit before finding herself back in Coronado as a Navy wife with three young children in the '60s all the while she continued acting professionally and staying connected and involved in the arts throughout the Island and San Diego. Tickets for the Kick-Off BASH and the Tribute Award Gala are on sale now, along with the festival's all-inclusive Emerald Badge. The Emerald Badge is the best way to experience the festival as it includes pre-public early reservations for films, events, parties, priority entry line, the Kick-off BASH - Taste of the Festival, Opening Night Film + After Party, Jury Awards, panels, Culinary Cinema Series and access to the Hospitality Lounge, as well as a discount on Gala tickets if purchased at the time of Badge purchase. Individual tickets are also on sale now. All events and screenings require a reservation on a first-come basis. Don’t miss out—grab your passes now at festival.coronadofilmfest.com. • Chelsea Van Voorhis is a writer for cvv productions, a PR and Event Management Firm currently helping to promote CIFF and their mission to welcome makers and lovers of film from all over the world to the storied seaside village of Coronado, to celebrate the magical art of visual storytelling. There is a guide on the menu pairing sauces with the various meats which is fun to follow but truth be told, they all work with everything; just choose your favorite and dig in. The sides are what you would expect from Hotel Del: exceptional quality and beautifully executed. The slaw was a standout — for me, the slaw is always an indicator of the caliber of a BBQ place. Crawford knocks it out of the ballpark with his take on this simple side using a grilled apple vinaigrette. The bits of green apple in the slaw just add to the crunch and tartness of the slaw. The vinegar cuts through all the barbecue's marvelous fattiness, adding to the experience. A side of this is a must with your BBQ. The Brisket had a beautiful bark and melted in my mouth. The ribs fell off the bone; they were so tender. The flavor was heavenly with just the taste of the rub, but you have to try the sauces. The pulled pork was moist and flavorful, with tender pieces mixed in with the crunchy bark. I couldn't get enough of the sausage, a jalapeno cheddar link, smoky and exotic with just the right amount of heat. I used up nearly all my Apple Mop Sauce dipping these sausage bites. As if the great food wasn't enough, the bar we posted up at to enjoy this meal was, simply put, gorgeous and period-appropriate. The Del found the bar in an old hotel in Pennsylvania and brought it back to its original glory for all of us to enjoy. At the helm of this old gem was bartender extraordinaire Andy Allen. When I commented that I liked his use of real smoke to impart a kiss of flavor rather than heavily smoked liquors, he told

me he took a “Gestaltish view on mixing drinks where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” An old-school bartender spouting German psychology behind a vintage bar in a historic building. All this while I take on some of the best BBQs I have had in San Diego? Sold, I will be back! Don't let the fact that this is the Hotel Del keep you from bringing the family; they are kid-friendly and have an enormous space, games, wide-screen TVs and an outdoor patio. The Del refers to this specifically as a “public” Smokehouse. I asked what they meant by that. They told me while many of the Del's venues are geared toward the hotel's guests, this space was designed with locals in mind. The Smokehouse is not a special occasion space, even though it is very special. It’s an everyday space where you can get great food and drink. The building is fancy, but you don't have to be; come as you are and treat yourself to a truly fantastic experience. There is something on the menu for everyone, and they serve brunch. The Laundry building is very accessible on foot or by bike. Approach from the beach and enjoy the view, or simply walk down Orange Avenue. Just follow your nose; the smoke will tell you where to go. You need to experience and enjoy this space. Bring some good conversation and your appetite, and I will meet you there. • Clyde Van Arsdall IV is a third-generation Coronado local, chef and storyteller. 2023 HONOR FLIGHT

Honor Flight veterans and guardians pose for a photo at the US Navy Memorial Plaza.

San Diego Veterans Honored in 2023 Flight to DC By Morgan Willis

S

an Diego International Airport was bustling with veterans, their families and volunteers on the morning of September 29th — but this wasn’t just any flight. There were nearly 200 people on the flight, including veterans who served in Vietnam, Korea and World War II, along with trip organizers and guardians assigned to watch over each veteran. These trips never get old for Honor Flight Chairman and Coronado resident Julie Brightwell, who has been on more than fifty Honor Flight trips. “It’s a chance to be around this living history and I learn something from each veteran,” Brightwell said. And I couldn’t agree more. My father, retired network news war correspondent Brad Willis, and I had signed up to create video content for Honor Flight San Diego, an organization that flies veterans to the memorials dedicated to the wars in which they fought.

US Navy Veteran William Keesee receives mail from his family.

The Flight Veterans boarded the early morning flight one by one as local firefighters carried their luggage. Onlookers cheered and an airline employee sang God Bless America. Once everyone was settled into their seats, the flight departed from San Diego International Airport. The plane was a sea of red, white and blue clothing, navy, army and marine jackets and groggy passengers. Bags of letters from local Boy Scouts, students and loved ones addressed to each of the veterans were passed around during the flight, and the leftover sleep from the early morning disappeared from veterans’ faces as they sifted through the letters. The mail call reminded the veterans of when they would receive letters from loved ones while overseas. Vietnam Navy Veteran William Keesee reflected as he

received a drawing from his grandson. “I had doubts about coming on the flight,” said Keesee, who had a smile on his face as he looked at the drawing. “It kind of reminds me of being in the Navy as a youngster. I didn’t get a lot of mail from mail calls, so I wasn’t expecting anything from anybody.” Keesee didn’t know why he was unsure about coming on the flight, but the drawing and letter he received assured him that the trip would be unforgettable. “Words can’t describe what this means to me,” Keesee said. Landing on the East Coast After landing in Baltimore and getting a good night's sleep, we were on our way to Washington, D.C., the next morning for a busy schedule of visiting sites including the Martin Luther King, World War II, Navy and Army memorials. The Honor Flight team took us to Arlington National Cemetery to witness

the changing of the guard and a wreathlaying ceremony. From there, we went onward to visit DC memorials with our last stop being the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials. The Vietnam War memorial is a simple black marble wall in the shape of a chevron. Dipping into the ground surrounded by lawn the wall contains the names of 58,320 US service members killed or missing during the war. Many veterans on the flight had served in Vietnam and some had even lost friends there. Being able to come to the wall and find the names of their friends, remembering those who have fallen, was cathartic for the veterans and their guardians alike. 28

This trip was not just about showing veterans that their service is not forgotten, but rather it gives them a chance to heal, to remember and to bond. Returning Home After another night in Baltimore, we returned to San Diego the next morning. The roar of hundreds of people could be heard as we exited the plane, many of them holding signs adorned with red, white and blue. Their warm welcome brought tears of joy to the veterans and to their families. This trip meant a lot to me as I accompanied my father, a former foreign war correspondent for NBC, on this trip. My dad has made over 200 videos for Coronado, profiling local residents,

business owners and artists. He just beat cancer a second time and has a broken jaw from a recent surgery. We weren’t entirely sure he would be able to make it on this trip. Yet he did, and in many ways, I was his guardian. A banquet was held on the last night, with the founder of the Vietnam War Memorial, Jan Scruggs, speaking to the veterans. My dad wasted no time jumping up from his chair to get a close-up shot of Jan for his series of videos. It means so much to me to see him come alive despite all he has been through.

O

ur city started as a little village that has grown and grown over the years. Depending upon where you are driving, you will see remnants of the past in buildings and businesses. Let’s take a trip down memory lane, not too far back — only 45-50 years — to the restaurants we all knew and frequented. In those days, we did not dine out several nights a week. Going out for a meal was more of a treat rather than a regular event. Coronado’s first restaurant dates back to 1887, when the Coronado Beach Restaurant operated out of a tent. At that time, the boathouse for the Hotel del Coronado was under construction on the edge of Glorietta Bay. The boathouse functioned as such until much later

when, in 1968, it became the Chart House restaurant. Students from Coronado worked there after school scrubbing potatoes, making "mud pies" and completing evening set up. Locals loved it for the never-ending salad and good food. We now know the boathouse as the Bluewater Grill. Moving on up Orange Avenue, two icons appear at 10th Street and B Avenue. The first is the La Avenida Restaurant run by the Robinson family for many years, famous for its Jack Salad and the paintings on the dining room wall by famous Mexican artist Alfredo Ramos Martínez. When it closed, the paintings — and the wall they adorned — were saved and can now be seen as the backdrop for the front desk at the Coronado Public Library as well as in the reading center. La Avenida later opened as Bistro d’Asia, which is now closed, and a new restaurant is slated to open this year. Thanks to the efforts of the Coronado Historical Association, the iconic La Avenida architecture that we know so well will continue to be maintained. Cross the street to Loma Avenue and there sits the Carrie Hizer house dating back to the early 1900s. In 1987, it became Chez Loma Restaurant, known for intimate dining with fine French food. It has had several owners since then who have renovated over the years, but the restaurant still remains Chez Loma offering fine dining.

Do you remember the days when Marco’s Italian Restaurant was the place of choice to go for noon time special “fat bellies,” evening pizza or more extensive entrees? Marco’s was another spot that employed our older teens delivering pizzas, seating guests and taking phone orders on those busy evenings. The building where Marco’s was located is now home to the Coronado Historical Association. Chez Loma restaurant, date unknown. Coronado Historical Association Collection.

La Avenida Cafe, date unknown. Coronado Historical Association Collection.

These restaurants are just a few of the old time favorites that are no longer here. Can you remember when we had Chu Dynasty, BaskinRobbins ice cream shop, Charburger or Bob’s Drive Thru? Do you remember where Bob’s Drive Thru was located? The business stood where the Wells Fargo Bank is today. We’re lucky that some restaurants have survived over the years and still remain in business on the Avenue. Danny’s Pub, on Orange Avenue across from Vons, is one restaurant that has stuck around and has been noted as having some of the best burgers in town. Not much has changed there. The Little Club on Orange Avenue near 1st Street, was noted over many years as a hangout for the young sailors from North Island. While it doesn’t attract as many North Island personnel these days, it is still one of the hottest spots around. It has become a favorite for the younger set, 20s to 40s especially, that is full of activity and locals. Evenings at the Little Club are often small high school

Customers still stand in line to wait for a breakfast table, and the side window is always buzzing, not to mention Clayton’s Mexican takeout further down 10th Street toward C Avenue. Now they have opened a second location further up Orange near Wells Fargo, which offers an assortment of breakfast items, great pastries, as well as good coffee. T

hanksgiving is a time to gather with loved ones

and express gratitude for all the things we have to be thankful for. To set the mood for our gathering this year, we created a festive Thanksgiving table that adds warmth and organic elements for a memorable meal. Here is our step-by-step guide to get the same look for your home.

1. Start by creating a neutral palette. Shades of white, cream, beige and brass will provide a clean and timeless backdrop for your table decor. 2. We created a lush centerpiece using fresh greenery. We started with eucalyptus and layered in fall branches, arranging them in a cascading manner. The vibrant greenery will add a touch of freshness to your table. 3. Pumpkins are the quintessential fall decor, so we layered in varying sizes and neutral colors on top of the greenery. We scattered in some figs and artichokes to top off the organic fall feel. 4. White dishes are one of our favorite styling tricks. Crisp white dishes keep the focus on the natural elements and the greenery in your centerpiece. The white dishes provide a clean canvas for the food and allow the other elements to shine.

5. Neutral napkins with a holder in soft brass create another layer on top of the white dishes. We love using a linen or cotton napkin for a relaxed look. 6. We are all about setting the mood with candlelight. A warm marble candle holder with a tan candle blends with the other neutral decor and gives off an ambient light for your meal. Complete the look with simple, elegant glassware and silverware. By combining fresh greenery, pumpkins, figs, artichokes, neutral napkins, brass accents and white dishes, you can create a Thanksgiving table that’s both welcoming and elegant. Hopefully this gives you some inspiration for creating a memorable and beautiful celebration of gratitude with your loved ones. • Karyn Molina and Jessica Nicolls are the owners of local interior design firm Bungalow 56.

o say that Coronado is special is an understatement. It is truly like no other place in the world. As I approach my fourth year on the little island we call home, I am constantly reminded of how lucky I am to wake up and make my life here. The beauty, the people, the community. All of it. Coronado is a juxtaposition of history and the future. Historic homes dance alongside brand new construction in a way that sparkles. It’s a marriage of the way things have been and where they are headed. The Coronado Floral Association speaks to this too. As a club, we are currently in our 102nd year. But each year, a new board joins to bring fresh ideas while honoring the traditions we have set in the past. Like a garden, we are continually growing with new companions along the way. We have members who can tell you stories of attending the show in the ’60s and others who bring enthusiasm attending for the very first time. always taken me to another time and place, right inside Spreckels Park!

Join me here in our monthly column as we share the people behind the scenes who make the Coronado Floral Association. Meet two ladies who are helping build a great community of plant lovers through our social events and our education series, Friends & Flowers.

I also remember my mom getting disqualified from the table arrangements section for (safely) incorporating a live betta fish into her arrangement. I still think she was robbed because I thought it was the coolest table decor ever. And, when I was about seven and my little sister Sarah was five, she won Best in Show for this incredible amaryllis she planted from a bulb. It was about twice her size. She got to take a picture with the mayor and get her name on the huge trophy which was very exciting and special for our family. Now she’s one of the Flower Show chairs!

Samantha Bey

If you are active on this island, there is no doubt that you have heard of and probably met Samantha Bey. A passionate gardener and tree person, a mother of four and a member of many local committees including the Street Tree Committee and Coronado Junior Woman’s Club, Sam Bey brings a wealth of knowledge to the CFA. This year marks her second year on the board transitioning from membership to social chair. If you’ve attended one of our monthly social events like Basic to Boujie, Plant Medicine or Floral Wreaths, Sam is the mastermind behind them. Any favorite memories to share about the flower show? “In general, I have these amazing memories of how transportive the whole flower show has always been. The smell of the grass and the tents and the flowers was so fantastic to me. It still smells the same now! And I loved the way the dark tent felt otherworldly and a little spooky and totally magical. Making Zoos Who’s is a core memory for me, as is peeking into all the magical miniature arrangements and pretending like you could be inside their whimsical little worlds. The sound of the big brass band in the gazebo feels like it’s from a bygone era. The whole experience has just

Why are you drawn to CFA? “Simply put, I’m drawn to CFA because the organization puts on one of the most wonderful, special and long-standing events our city offers, and I want to see it keep happening so my children can have the same joyous memories of it that I have. I got involved several years ago planning the 1922 Club. As time went on, and after the city cut funding for the show at the same time costs to put it on skyrocketed, I wanted to keep focusing on raising funds to keep the flower show going and also bringing to life social events that bring the community together to celebrate the love of plants and flowers. What do you hope to achieve this year? "My goal is to put on engaging, fun, joyful events that teach people about flowers. I want these events to breathe fresh life into what CFA does in the community and be a new fundraising mechanism so we can keep the flower show a reality. What’s on the docket for the next few events? "We are really excited to make fresh evergreen holiday wreaths with Root 75; enjoy an amazing seasonal spread by Host & Roast Catering in December; learn about the amazing benefits of cacao with a wellness focused cacao ceremony and sound bath in January; and celebrate Valentine’s Day with a fresh twist on roses in February. Every event is different and special!" Where can we learn more about social events? She advises companies and organizations focused on sustainability and animal protection and volunteers for various non-profit organizations in the animal protection space. This is her first year on the CFA board and we are honored to have her join us. She is planning all of our Friends & Flowers events with a fresh take. Why did you join CFA? "I love how CFA celebrates the beauty of the flowers, plants and gardens of Coronado and invites people of all ages and gardening abilities to join in the fun. My five-year-old daughter has delighted in winning ribbons for her bean plates and junior floral arrangements at the Flower Show. This year we look forward to creating some fun creatures out of fruits and vegetables! What is Friends & Flowers?

Christine Mott

Christine and her family moved to Coronado from New York City in 2019 to enjoy Southern California weather and a more relaxed lifestyle. She loves how Coronado is a small melting pot of people from all over the country and around the world. Christine and her family just finished construction on their new home in Coronado which they have named “Casa de las Flores” in honor of their two daughters, Laila Jasmine and Eva Violet, and to celebrate their love of the natural world. The garden scape for their home is an homage to their favorite plants, flowers and fruiting trees. One of the most prized trees in their garden is a Sullivan mulberry, a special variety introduced to her family by her neighbor and fellow CFA member, Rita Perwich. "Friends & Flowers (F&F) is our monthly educational program that is designed to educate and spark conversation and community around various topics in gardening and horticulture. The program was developed by long-time CFA board members and Flower Show Chairs, Becky Hubbard and Diana Drummey, with the goal of building a community of gardeners and floral enthusiasts. I am honored to build from their work to serve the flower lovers of Coronado. F&F provides a place to meet new friends and learn about things from pests and soil to how to win a ribbon at the Coronado Flower Show. We feature experts from master gardeners to our own local garden celebrities like Rose Co-Chair Rita Perwich, who has one of the most exquisite rose gardens on the island. Why did you take on the role of Friends & Flowers? "I love learning new tips and information about gardening and horticulture so the Friends & Flowers (F&F) role was a perfect

fit. The F&F events are special because they help engage the community throughout the year with free educational programming that can benefit everyone, from novice gardeners to master gardeners. As chair of F&F, I have designed our programs to include a focus on sustainability. We have monthly events that take place every third Monday at the Library in the Winn Room. This year we have talked about earth-friendly gardening without pesticides, good bugs versus bad bugs and the role of birds, pollinators and native plants in our garden. Beyond the CFA, you are very active with the trees in Coronado. What is your involvement with “Save the Trees”? "I am part of a group of local activists working to save five mature pine trees from destruction by the City. The five trees, located adjacent to the lawn bowling court behind the library, include a 100-year old Torrey Pine — a critically endangered species and the most rare tree in North America. These trees are living symbols of Coronado’s history and provide beauty, shade and a range of environmental benefits including a cooling effect on the surrounding sidewalk, asphalt and indoor temperatures, reduction of electrical bills, noise and air pollution, as well as carbon capture. The trees also provide critical habitat to nesting birds and other wildlife. We are asking the City to revoke its decision to remove these trees and find an alternative solution that preserves and respects our urban tree canopy. I have

been moved by the showing of support by tree-lovers from all over Coronado who have aided our efforts to save these trees." Coronado Floral Association The Coronado Floral Association (CFA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community service organization dedicated to enriching lives through education in, and showcasing of, flowers, plants and gardens. Specifically, we: • Encourage and foster knowledge of horticulture. • Promote the love and use of flowers. • Encourage community beautification (including homes, schools and public grounds). • Produce the Annual Coronado Flower Show (in partnership with the City of Coronado). When you join CFA you become part of this annual tradition of floral magic and beauty that blooms each spring. Sound like something for you? Join us! Go to coronadoflowershow.com to learn more about how to join and what else our organization has to offer. • Stephanie Clegg sits on the board of Village Elementary Parent Teacher Organization and is the Communications Chair for The Coronado Floral Association. She was a technical writer and editor, but considered herself a creative writer first, having majored in creative writing in college. As a writer, Karen had a lifelong dream to write and publish a novel. In October 2020, Karen was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. In November 2021, Karen called her siblings, ecstatic that her first novel, Reasons for Waking, was going to be published. Shortly after that call, her health took a sudden turn for the worse, and she was unable to complete the final edits. Her siblings promised her they would do everything possible to get the book published. Foster completed her first novel, Reasons for Waking, shortly before her death in 2022. Lori and her other siblings were determined to get the book published. Not only was it published — by Bold Story Press, which publishes books exclusively by women — but it was also recently awarded the Readers' Favorite Award Silver Medal in the "Fiction - General" category. For more information about Karen Foster and Reasons for Waking, please visit reasons-for-waking.com.

Autumn Concert Series Kenneth Brown

Friday, November 3 at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room

Coronado Philharmonia Orchestra

Our Autumn Concert Series, which kicked off on September 1 and has featured solo pianists, wraps up with pianist, composer and music educator Kenneth Brown on Friday, November 3 at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Some Islanders know Kenneth as the associate director of music at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Coronado, where he performs and conducts both classic and original musical compositions. Having studied piano, composition and various music skills for his entire life, Brown holds a B.M. from Temple University and an M.A. and PhD from UCLA. His musical compositions, described by Alex Ross in the New Yorker as “strongly imagined… rich in dreamy textures”, are performed across the United States by established ensembles such as Yarn/Wire and the Momenta Quartet as well as renowned soloists such as Stefano Greco, José Menor, Clipper Erickson and many others. As a pianist, Brown frequently performs classical repertoire, his own original works, and those of contemporary composers in environments ranging from concert halls to dance studios. He has created music for filmmakers, theater directors, ballet and modern dancers and choreographers, having collaborated

NO FEAR Humanity Stoked is Here

Coronado Island Film Festival brings so many fabulous films to town each year, & Humanity Stoked is Crown City Magazine’s publisher’s pick. By Heather Canton Photos by Derek Emge Photography

O

ur fair island city is so lucky to have its very own Coronado Island Film Festival (CIFF). It’s also one of the coolest festivals in existence, celebrating and exploring the world of film. With walkable location sites all over our lovely little town, festival goers are transported not only to this enchanted island, but also to experience an incredible variety of films thoughtfully selected by some of the most prolific and brilliant community members. These creative organizers roll out Hollywood’s red 52

carpet for us all to enjoy. Hats off to Doug St. Dennis, Merridee Book and the fantastic CIFF crew who work long hours all year to bring the magic of Hollywood to Crown City. The team at CIFF have chosen a wonderful mission for our community — not only is film entertaining, it also has the power to change the world. Roll camera to this year, CIFF has brought us one such film, Humanity Stoked, whose director knows this more than anyone.

Michael Ien Cohen, a Brooklyn born New Yorker who has been skateboarding since he was 7 years old, dreamt of being a filmmaker by the time he was 14. Like many of us who put our dreams on hold, Michael ended up keeping it a dream for way too long. He didn’t start pursuing his film career until just 6 years ago, at 50 years old. This time lag inspired the creation of his children's charity, the WhatStopsYou.org Foundation, and it’s a big reason he created the Humanity Stoked documentary. After finally pushing play on his film career, he looked back on all the time he lost not doing what he loves. For years, he lived a professional life that was far from satisfying. What was it that stopped him? Michael knew it was fear that held him back. Cut! Take two: FEAR. Let’s talk about it. In certain instances, this emotion can be helpful to our survival, but all too often fear can be debilitating. Michael’s mission is to encourage others to overcome their fears and start living their dreams so that in turn, they can help others live more satisfying lives. Humanity Stoked features various compelling stories from over 70 iconic figures from the worlds of science, art, music, education, and activism, all of whom share a love of skateboarding. These incredible human beings get real on screen about the challenges and fears that have held them back in life. They testify to powerful perspectives and common experiences that helped them overcome their fears. The issues these skaters expose to discussion are very different — xenophobia, homophobia, racism, gender inequality, depression and addiction — but they can all confine us in the same emotion: fear. CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM

As skaters share these poignant stories, you gain an extraordinary level of understanding and compassion learning about different challenges humans collectively face. The cast inspires us about what helped them overcome self-sabotage and the tribulations of a sometimes cruel, oppressive society. You will be moved and inspired by these beautiful souls who think deeply about what matters, finding solace and support in skateboarding and sharing a love for the sport that brings them together. In order to help people escape the trap of living a fear-based life, the film aims to provoke the audience to contemplate more deeply about the origins and consequences of fear, as well as the many social, interpersonal and environmental issues fear creates and exacerbates. Michael and his cast stress the importance of art, music and good ol’ fashioned inspirational pep talks. There’s nothing quite like a motivational speaker to wake you up and put a spark in your soul to make positive changes.

Michael’s non-profit organization, the WhatStopsYou.org Foundation helps people, especially in underprivileged areas, by providing life-altering, inspirational speakers at no cost to offer hope, guidance and encouragement for both children and adults in schools and organizations who need it most. World-class speakers focus on a wide range of topics including action sports, science, music, art, education, self-help, business, politics, humanitarian work and more. Fast forward to postproduction, Michael and his supporters are promoting the San Diego debut of the documentary, Humanity Stoked and his non-profit organization, WhatStopsYou.org, the recipient of all proceeds from his film. He wants to go big. He doesn’t want to see Humanity Stoked come and go! He intends for the documentary to continue to bring validation and hope to all who suffer and become a stimulus for

positive interpersonal and social change, in conjunction with the foundation. This film makes you think. The introspection of the audience is the catalyst for positive, constructive change — real change in our hearts and lives that can collectively change our whole world for the better. Michael isn’t messing around. Purchase tickets to the movies and support him in his mission to save this wild show of a world! One person choosing courage over fear at a time. With each issue of this community magazine created for our hometown, our contributors also hope to inspire, uplift and create that ripple effect of positive change for our world. We ’ve decided to help promote this film, and recently held an opencall photoshoot at the Coronado Skatepark where Derek Emge captured local Coronado and San Diego skateboarders spending time with one of the cast members Micaela Ramirez, the founder and president of the Poseiden Foundation. Micaela’s nonprofit creates life-changing experiences, inspiring kids to pursue their passions and accomplish their dreams. Crown City Magazine has now also volunteered to promote the film at the Exposure 2023 skate competition in Encinitas which is co-founded by another Humanity Stoked cast member, professional and Olympic skater, Amelia Brodka. This annual event empowers women, trans and nonbinary persons through skateboarding, specifically benefiting survivors of domestic violence. Our mission here at Crown City Magazine is to celebrate the people like Doug, Merridee and the rest of the CIFF cast, who make this city great. Thank you for bringing films like Humanity Stoked here for us to be moved and inspired by in this magical artform that the film industry gifts to us. Here’s to you, Coronado Island Film Festival — may you bloom and grow! That’s a wrap. Cheers! • Heather Canton is a local skater who is proud to support Humanity Stoked.
