Jenny woke up with a start. It was another nightmare where the strange men were abusing her and she felt unable to scream, unable to escape. Then she remembered that she was safe now. She looked around the room she had been allowed to decorate. She would try to get some sleep and, in the morning, take comfort being with people who truly cared about her. Alicia couldn’t stop smiling as she worked at putting on her new shoes. They were the cool Vans her older brother had said would be just as nice as the other kids' when she started Kindergarten next week. Alicia loved them and she kept looking through her new backpack with all its new crayons and school supplies. These stories represent just some of the challenges that our San Diego children are facing and the hope that they can experience when someone who cares steps up to help.

Many of us are aware of San Diego’s latest, glaring statistics on underserved children: 20,000 homeless children who, without shelter are vulnerable to abuse or exploitation; over 2,700 children who must be removed from their homes due to severe abuse or untenable neglect.

A CHILD ONLY GETS ONE CHILDHOOD IT’S UP TO US TO GIVE THEM ROOTS TO GROW AND WINGS TO FLY

Additionally, San Diego has been identified as a hub for sexual tra cking of minors. The list of challenges is long, and it is hard to know where to begin to help. FOCUS, which stands for Friends of Children United Society, was created for that reason.FOCUS was founded right here in Coronado and has been working to help local vulnerable children for the past 40 years. Partnering with over 100 vetted children’s charities, FOCUS has been able to requests.FOCUSreachmonth,identifying.spentmembersandhelpgoesthatSupporters100,000assistanceprovideforoverchildren.knowtheirmoneydirectlytoorganizationscausesthathavedecadesEachagenciesouttowithprojectFOCUS members then can shop for and deliver goods to the charities. FOCUS is also able to respond quickly to emergency requests to help in an immediate crisis. The only way FOCUS is able to e ectively help so many children is because of the incredible generosity of its members, supporters and donors. We welcome anyone to join us and be a part of truly making a di erence in the lives of our most vulnerable children. avy pulled his coat tighter around him as the night air became colder. He knew he was shivering partly because of the weather, and partly from the dread that comes over him at this time of night. He had felt this way since he became homeless after his parents had thrown him out. Then Davy saw the van with the name of the shelter come by and other homeless teens moving towards it. He knew he could join them and tonight – have a shower, a meal and a safe place to sleep.

Come join us on Saturday, September 17th for the return of Beer by the Bay Coronado’s only craft beer and wine festival!

After a couple years of Covid-related delays, we are back and ready to host a fun yacht rock themed day with lots of great local craft beer, wine and home brewed suds, along with some amazing live yacht rock favorites by the soft-rock band, High Tide Society. Join your friends and community at the beautiful Coronado Ferry Landing from 1:00 - 5:00 pm for unlimited beer and wine tastings, and try your hat at giant Jenga, cornhole, beer pong and other fun games in the sunshine. Beer by the Bay (BBB) is hosted by Islander Ladies Club (ILC), a small group of local women dedicated to celebrating and bettering our community. ILC is proud to have donated over $90,000 from proceeds raised at BBB toward local causes, businesses and people since 2015. This year, the beneficiary of BBB is Safe Harbor Coronado because of the much-needed work they do to support those struggling in our community. Led by Executive Director Georgia Ferrell, Safe Harbor provides a refuge for our local youth

HEALTH + WELLNESS | BY TRACY REAL Help ease the transition back to school with some simple steps to smiles So summer!long,

Local Coronado dad, Andre Pierre enjoying some water skiing during summer vacation with his son, Noah.

eturning to school can be an exciting time for many, but for others, it can be a struggle. If your child hasn’t eased back as easily as anticipated- these tips can help improve the transition from relaxed summer to stricter school schedule while minimizing stress and increasing success and well-being.

22 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2022

1. Adjust sleep schedules. Your sleepy head needs their zzzzzz’s to thrive. Kids need lots of sleep to ensure ideal physical and mental health. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends 8-13 hours of sleep on a regular basis. If your kiddo is allowed to stay up endless hours and can’t get up in the a.m., adjustments must be made, especially to help with maximum functioning at school.

2. Create a launch pad. This easy to find area is where your child places all supplies for the next day to help with a quick and simple departure. All school items should be set there including: backpack, laptop, water bottle, lunch, sweatshirt, PE uniform, school project, etc. The launch pad makes all school essentials easy to find and reduces the frenzied search in the a.m.

3. Prepare prior. No need for added pressure prior to school beginning. As much as possible, get everything ready the night before. Have your child lay out his clothes, shoes, snacks, and put everything on the launch pad for an easy out the door .

4. Safe and loving send o . Mornings can be tough and stressful, but they don’t have to be. Infact, if simple steps are River McCauley enjoying a quick, refreshing dip at the Hotel del Coronado pool.

Annalei Berke feeling free Friends, (L-R) Emily Albin, Savannah McCauley, Lucy Pierre, Cambria McCauley and Wren Farley having fun together a day at the Del Mar Fair. Keep essentials easy to find on a launch pad.

7. Balance. Help ensure most days are not over scheduled nor under scheduled. While some kiddos thrive with back-toback activities most need down time to relax, reflect, and regroup to energize for the next day or prepare for a test. On the feeling

followed, you will personally put the good in goodbye by positively jumpstarting each day with a genuine smile, well wish and hug vs. rushing out the door and forgetting these important elements. In turn, if kids begin with an argument or feel out of control, it increases anxiety and can send them into a tizzy that’s di cult to tame before period 1 begins.

6. Monitor regularly. After check-in, hope for a positive response, but know it is natural to have days that or just okay or even bad. This provides opportunities for problem solving. Monitor your children’s days to ensure most are at least okay. A perfect tool is the check-in magnet from Safe Harbor. While its normal to feel sad, mad, or frustrated sometimes, you don’t want your child to always live in those spaces. Also, monitor your child’s workload and grades to help them stay on top of each class. Falling behind can lead to frustrated kids and disinterest in school.

5. Ask open ended questions. Check in with your child daily.Avoid asking yes / no questions otherwise you may get a simple response that doesn’t provide many details. (i.e Tell me about your highlights today? What did you learn about? What was your favorite class and why?) Questions like these can give you an idea of the many aspects of their lives. Hone in on the areas your child feels proud of and also address their potential struggles --friendships, homework, class work etc.

9. Welcome down time. Find time to relax. Everyone needs a little R & R. It actually helps to think clearer and make better choices. Fidget toys not only help one relax they also can increase focus. Additionally, brain breaks between homework or intense studying can reduce stress or frustration and may result in increased productivity that allow your child to finish school work with more interest and energy. Whether children need a calming space or a way to help them sleep better, this website has many options worth exploring. calming-room/homesites.google.com/sandi.net/lmec-virtual10. Find ways to incorporate joy into each day. Participating in activities your child enjoys individually and as a family is healthy. They don’t have to be big excursions. Sometimes smaller undertakings are better with less coordination. Try a new sport, play family games, share knock knock jokes, have a tickle party, snuggle, or watch funny videos. Brainstorm the many options and take a few minutes to welcome them into your daily routine.

Here are some responses from local kids after we asked them what brings them joy: Sebastian- Grade 9: “I like hanging out with friends and biking around Coronado.” Savannah- Grade 9: “ Going on bike rides with friends and enjoying the Coronado summer weather."

8. Build resilience. Children navigate each day and although parents want to make everything perfect, know that problem solving opportunities build confidence and resilience boosting their confidence to tackle hardships that come their way.

T year we celebrated the 100th anniversary of several organizations here in our fair city. A city that was incorporated in 1890, after the completion of the Hotel del Coronado. We grew into our village and later the larger city in order to meet the needs of the hotel, its staff and visitors alike. Here is a question to ponder: What would Coronado be if those men of vision had not built the hotel? Would we still be hunting rabbits here?

Thinking about Coronado, one does not have to go back one hundred years to delve into the history or our rich past. Looking back into the 1970s, I remember that most people had not yet started to head across the bridge to do what had been done here on the island for so many years. For example, thinking about restaurants alone, we had plentiful choices for daily dining out. If we had a visitor or a special occasion, it might have been time to cross the bridge to Mister A's or the Westgate Hotel, but that was a rarity. On any given night in Coronado, one could visit Marco’s for a hearty Italian dinner, Chu Dynasty for authentic Chinese food, not to mention the Mexican Village on the other side of town, our famous Mexican restaurant. Uptown, we had a variety of stores and shops to ll the shoppers' needs. You could dress well from any number of shops and buy your groceries from several markets, big and small. Orange Avenue was our Main Street, USA. A busy area then, as it still is Recently, today.a block on Orange Avenue struck me as one of interest that not everyone knows of its history. That is the 800 block of Orange Avenue, starting with the “movie house” on the north end. The Village Theater had its grand opening on March 18, 1947. So indeed, most of you locals of all ages know it well. It not only showed rst-run movies, but on Saturday morning for 25 cents, the children could head over for cartoons and a show. And guess what? Mom had three hours of very inexpensive freedom. very inexpensively. By the late 1990s, it was showing wear, with no repairs in sight. You really had to want to see that night’s showing badly since it had become dif cult to nd two seats

30 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2022 together that had seats and backs as well. With the lights on before a performance, it was common to have friends shout out where you and your companion might nd seating. It was not particularly surprising when the Village Theater closed in 2000. It was not until 2011 that work began to completely renovate the theater and reopen as a triple-screen theater showing rst-run movies once again. Just a few doors down the street was the Coronado Department Store. If you don’t remember the store, it is now Rite Aid and the of ce above. In the old days, the late 1940s that is, Ben Cohen and associates came to town to run the store.

By 1950, he had taken over management and owned it. One shopped there for anything from clothing to china or linens. In the early 1960s, he saw the need and added a second story to the store. He operated the establishment until 1982 when it was sold and closed. Ben Cohen will also be remembered for his community involvement. He served on the Planning Commission, the School Board and the City Council. His wife Loris was also a community activist — serving as a founding member of the Coronado Hospital’s Women's Auxiliary was among her accomplishments.

• Carol Pastor and her family have lived in Coronado since the mid-1970s. Mother of seven girls, many of whom still live here in the village, Carol has been involved in the community over the years with the Friends of the Library, Historic Resource Commission, and most recently writing about Coronado history for the Coronado Historical Association. An avid history buff since her college days, exploring our local history is a perfect t.

Then down the block came Coramart, which was much like a junior-size Walmart, if you will. Men loved to shop there, as they could nd anything from nuts and bolts to tobacco. Women could go in for anything from nail polish to diapers, not to mention candy or toys. Coramart was de nitely our “go to” place. The store operated until 1996, closed and remained basically empty until Vons expanded their market recently. The site of the original Vons next door has been a market for many years. There you have but one section of town, full of history, in our little village across the bridge from San Diego. T he smell of apples, brown sugar, butter and cinnamon baking is second to none. This heavenly scent signals that autumn is o cially here. In years past, this, for my family, this would mean apple picking for my family. Unfortunately, our tradition has been on hold. This year, I am resolved to make the trek to Julian, basket in hand.

What’s in a name?

DessertsBakedFruit

What's in a name anyhow? I found a recipe for a Fall Apple Cobbler only to find out it was a Fall Apple Crisp. A cobbler contains a biscuitlike topping spooned or dropped in place, creating a cobbled, uneven topping. The baked dessert in question had a streusel topping that included oats, which made it a crisp.

Even though I will leave with an abundance of apples, I will undoubtedly run into the same issues with what to bake. If not a pie, then what? Despite being a chef for most of my adult life, dessert have never been my strong suit. For years, every fruit dish I baked, I called a cobbler. Lately, I have been curious about the di erence between a crisp and a crumble, a buckle and a betty, and what about that cobbler?. Come to find out, I have never actually made a cobbler — what I have always made was, in fact, a crumble.

Crisps, Crumbles, Cobblers, Buckles and Bettys are di erent matters. These fruit desserts come in square, rectangle, or sometimes oval baking dishes and contain various toppings, crumbly or solid. Breaking down these varieties is easy and clears up years of not knowing which one is which. All but one has a streusel topping, and one has actual cake in the mix. When class is over, you will be able to talk shop with your grandmother. Let's start by defining what a streusel topping is, then give you some straightforward definitions of these desserts.

36 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2022

• Cobbler: Cobblers contain the same fresh fruit, but with a biscuit-style topping. It is called a cobbler due to its uneven crust that looks like a cobblestone road. The biscuit dough is spooned or dropped over the fruit, causing an uneven crust. Biscuit dough makes a great topping, but it could not be used as a bottom crust on a pie (biscuit ...dough) has less fat and more liquid than pie dough.

• Crumble: Crumbles are the English equivalent of a crisp. They both contain the same fresh fruit, but the streusel topping on a crumble usually doesn't have oats.

• Buckle: A buckle consists of fruit and cake batter baked with a streusel topping. As it bakes, the fruit and the streusel topping make the cake “buckle.” It very much resembles a co ee cake.

Baked fruit desserts share many similarities with their fillings and tend to di erentiate themselves by their toppings. Most people know a pie when they see one. The pie shape is iconic, as it comes in its eponymous round pan. The crust sometimes covers the entirety of the top of the pie, or if one is fancy, maybe a lattice of dough adorns the top. A pie can have a bottom crust or simply go without.

• Streusel is a crumbly dessert topping consisting of fat, sugar and flour, and sometimes nuts, oats and spice. Of the desserts mentioned, a crisp, crumble, buckle and betty all contain streusel toppings. The crisp is the only dessert on this list with a streusel topping that contains oats. The cobbler is the only dessert on the list without streusel.

• Crisp: A crisp is a fruit dessert with a streusel topping of oats, flour, butter, sugar and sometimes nuts.

• Betty: A betty, as in Apple Brown Betty, is similar to a crumble, as no oats in its crumb topping. In a betty, the topping is layered throughout the dessert.

I know firsthand that a weekend of apple-picking and baking will make memories for years to come. Don't forget to pick up some apple cider — we published a great recipe for mulled apple cider in the December article on holiday cocktails. See you up there!

• Julian

Now that Betty Crocker has given us the secret handshake, its decision-making time. If you choose a streusel topping, you are in crumble territory; add oats, it's a crisp; mix some streusel topping throughout, you have a betty. If you see beauty in imperfection and like a more substantial crust, the biscuit approach of a cobbler is for you. If you want an all-in approach, "buckle" up and throw some cake batter in the mix. Whatever avenue you choose, I hope you enjoy your journey. My fruit odyssey began this summer when peaches were in season. I made a cobbler, which I now know was a crumble. I can't wait to use my new knowledge on this season’s apple crop.

This year, the high demand was a sign of the times, which have brought some dramatic challenges — nothing this dedicated group couldn't covercome.

Together with A great team of FOCUS volunteers managed to transport and unpack 2,811.40 lbs of school supplies, as well as pick up and pack each of 748 backpacks. Seventeen agencies were the recipients of the backpacks and most were delivered by FOCUS members covering over 225 miles of San Diego County. This record number of backpacks for FOCUS was made possible by the fundraising generosity of their members andThesupporters.17agencies served spanned all eight causes that FOCUS supports, including foster care, homelessness, schools, literacy, health & well-being, child sex traf cking, rehabilitation and assistance for military families.Theincredibly successful backpack program was among a group of important July projects that FOCUS funded and shopped for.
