Merry Christmas everyone! DaviD SelleS Pass Herald Reporter
One of my favourite times of the year is finally here!
Christmas has always been a big deal for my family and I have so many different traditions that I do with my family
Merry ChristMas & happy New year!

throughout the Christmas season. One of those traditions is driving around a n d looking at differe n t areas of the city that are lit up. Due to my move to the Pass, I missed out on that tradition this year but I’ve got to say, the Crowsnest Pass sure knows how to light up the community as well. I’m glad I still had the opportunity to see Christmas lights around the community at the Gazebo in Blairmore, at Chris’ Restaurant and so many other places. It was also a blast enjoying (ok more like FREEZING) the parade with members of the com-
munity. Seeing how many different Christmas events are held in the Pass made me fall in love with this community even more. I’ll be back in Lethbridge visiting family and friends this Christmas season but am glad I was still able to experience some of the Christmas celebration with you. I wish everyone reading this a very blessed Christmas season and a very happy new year as well. I’ll see you again in 2021!

The origins of Baby New Year Herald Contributor
Excitement for a new year abounds on January 1. Baby New Year is one of the more recognizable symbols of the New Year's holiday, particularly in print advertisements and television commercials. Perhaps you've wondered what role Baby New Year plays in the celebration? While
he may seem like a relatively modern icon, this cultural mainstay has a lengthy history. One theory suggests Baby New Year was celebrated as far back as 600 B.C. in ancient Greece, when a child was paraded around in a basket upon the arrival of the new year. The baby repre-

sented rebirth, and Greeks believed their god of wine, Dionysus, was reborn on New Year's as the spirit of fertility. Other historians say that the custom even predates the Greeks to the ancient Egyptians. Even though the baby new year custom was originally frowned upon by Christians and deemed a pagan tradition, eventually Christians embraced the symbol as well, albeit in a different way. The end of the year is marked by the birth of the Christ child, and this became a special way to interpret Baby New Year. In modern times, Baby New Year has lost any connection to a deity or religious figure. Rather, he is now interpreted as a child who arrives at the start of the year and eventually ages into Father Time. The baby is depicted as an infant or toddler wearing a diaper and a sash with the year he is representing (and often a top hat). He is sometimes depicted holding or associated with an hourglass, a noisemaker or other item either pertaining to time or New Year's Day festivities. Father Time is often portrayed as an elderly man with a long, gray beard. The Baby New Year/Father Time message boils down to "out with the old and in with the new." People bid goodbye to Father Time and welcome this cherubic child who will carry

them through the next 12 months and grow with them. The Baby New Year idea eventually developed into a "First Born" tradition as well. Many towns, cities and hospitals have instituted contests awarding the first baby born in the new year the title of "Baby New Year." Such children are often the subjects of local news coverage and get their picture in the newspaper. Gifts, such as complimentary diapers, a case of formula or baby food or other baby supplies may be offered. In addition, private companies may offer their own gifts and recognition to the lucky child and his or her family in turn for complementary publicity. Baby New Year is a symbol of the fresh start the new year brings. His relevance in celebrations has endured for centuries.
May the Christmas season fill your home with joy, your heart with love and your life with laughter.

We are grateful and overwhelmed this holiday season with the amount of generosity that our community has given to several of our CCHS students to make their Christmas season a little nicer. We are particularly thankful for the altruism and empathy demonstrated by Aiden Douglas,
who took it upon himself to answer the call. Aiden solicited and quarterbacked the raising of over $5,756.85 from local businesses and the community. Aiden then took that money and purchased gift cards from local businesses to give to students in our school. These efforts resulted in the creation of 30 stockings each

Jesus is the Reason for the Season! Bill White Administrator Internationale Prayer Centre Prayer Canada The title of this writing always stirs the spirit within me as we all get together with our families and friends and the mood
of the gathering is always joyful and pleasing. Families always produce new little ones that fill your joys to full and running over. The roasted turkey with all the trimmings fills the house with delightful aromas as well as filling the waiting stomach to prove the
majesty of the season. And then to top it off we have the exchange of gifts with all its surprises and smiles, a little laughter and a few tears of joy of something special. Then after dinner when we’re all fully satisfied, we’ll just sit around the Christmas Tree with the

crackling fire going adding the wonderful warmth as only a log fire can produce. Probably the odd roasting of marshmallows will also add to our enjoyment along with the singing of our favorite Christmas carols. Some of the carols like “Away in the Manger” and “come Let Us Adore Him”, will enhance our memory that Jesus is the “reason for the season”. Oh Halleluiah! As we all have our memory banks renewing our lifestyle over the years let us reflect for a moment on Jesus. Some of our most respected authorities on Jesus remind us that Jesus can be found in every book of the Bible. Hundreds of years before His Virgin birth Isaiah records in Chapter 9 verses 6 and 7 this. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His govern-
ment and peace, there will be no end. Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgement and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will perform this. We know that this prophetic word will be fulfilled in future days as written and validated by many world scholars of word has declared it totally true. Following His virgin birth, it was noted that He was a special child and continued to grow in wisdom and knowledge. As a boy He astounded priests and members of the synagogue with His wisdom and abilities. Later in life everywhere He went the people saw miracles of healing, the casting out of demons, the raising of the dead, people regained their eyesight, walking on the water, ordering of the wind and the rain. All through the New Testament scores of miracles, and healings are recorded. He fed 5000 peo-
ple having only a few fish and a little bread. He gave us much direction about lifestyles, being truthful, value of prayer. He gave us direction to fill the earth, take charge of the entire world. He gave us the love chapter and said love never fails. He forgives all our sins, He offers forgiveness and by His grace we receive the gift of salvations, our passport to Heaven, our names written in His – Book of Life – a place in Heaven. Oh – what a Savior, what a Lord and He is our soon coming King. He is the reason for the season. Today we are hearing prophetic word that Jesus is coming again and this time He will come to take His Church to Heaven so that they may be where He is. Only those that are “Born Again” will be going with Him. In John 3:3 and John 3:5-7 it says it this way, Jesus speaking John 3:3 – Jesus said most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God. Nikodemus said to Him – “How can a man be born again when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born? Jesus answered him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. Verse 6 – “That which is born of flesh is flesh and that which is born of spirit is spirit. Verse 7 – Do not marvel that I said to you, “You must be “Born Again”. The Lord’s return is declared in Thessalonians Chapter 4:16-17 or the Lord himself will descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead will rise first. Then all who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall be with the Lord. This marvelous plan for this catching up of His church to Heaven is orchestrated by the one who is “The Reason for the Season” This capsule writing is now asking – “Are you ready” Are you prepared? If not, and you desire a place in Heaven pray this simple prayer today and mean it in your heart. Lord Jesus, I am a sinner, I’m sorry for my sins and I repent of them Come into my heart today and I’ll make you my savior and Lord. Amen. Tell somebody that you said the prayer. You will be saved and on your way to Heaven some day. Your name will be in His – Book of Life – Hallelujah – Praise

(NC) We all know the holidays are about more than just presents and parties, but it can be hard putting this into practice and passing this idea on to your kids. Fortunately,
there are some simple ways you can educate them on the true spirit of the season: Set the example. Children are like little mirrors, reflecting what they see. So, it’s up to the parents and adults in their lives to show the importance of giving back especially at this time of year. Get the family together to volunteer at an animal shelter, make an extra effort to visit that relative who lives alone or sponsor a nice dinner for a local family in need. Pick gifts carefully. Forget the latest trendy gadgets or toys, and introduce your kids to the idea of gifts that give back to others. Start with something they can relate to, like supporting young students with meals, library books, school supplies and uniforms through Canadian Feed The Children’s Best.Gift.Ever catalogue. Your gifts support children who need it most and you’ll get cute cards that make great stocking stuffers! Prioritize people. Instead of setting aside lots of time at the mall for shopping, make more room in your schedule to spend quality time with your little ones. Whether it’s baking cookies for family and friends, going ice-skating at your local park or curling up on the couch to watch cheesy movies, make sure your kids know that people and spending time with those you love are what matter most. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ Fr. Joseph NAgothu Parish Priest Holy Trinity Parish, Blairmore
The first to hear the good news of Jesus' birth were not the rich, the influential, the powerful or the religious and political leaders of Israel, but the ordinary and the poor of the society. Jesus came to empower the powerless, to seek and save the lost, to heal the sick, to raise the dead, to show us our Father's unconditional love. Therefore, let us offer to Him today thanksgiving and glory. Through our words and deeds, and rejoicing in our hearts, let us proclaim the joyful message to the ends of the earth: We take this wonderful opportunity to wish you all a blessed and joyfilled Christmas and prosperous New Year 2020. We appreciate and thank you for your most valuable presence and your generous heart towards our Parish. May the lord bless you and the works of your hands and grant to you health, love and peace. We would be pleased to help you with any of your spiritual needs, such as visiting the sick, Holy Communion, and Anointing of the sick. Please feel free to contact the Church or parish office at any time. Come and Celebrate Christmas this year with us. Looking Back at Christmas John Kinnear Feature Writer
Like many, I have fond childhood memories of the Christmas season. What comes to mind are simpler times, far more simpler than today’s helter-skelter frenetic going’s on, as people ramp up for the big day. A few weeks prior to Christmas there was usually the arrival of a large parcel from Eatons or Sears that was quickly hidden down our basement. There was usually a stern warning issued after this like, “Don’t you dare go down there!” The basement was one of those trap door, flip-up, steep-staired affairs that took you down to a dimly-lit place where God knows what lurked. Stored also down there underneath the stairs in
anticipation of the seasonal celebrations were cases of mixed Lethbridge Bottling Works beverages. Ginger ale, orange crush, collins mix and two or three cases of Lethbridge Pilsner beer. You remember that iconic bottle’s art work don’t you? The labels with images of trains, tee pees, cars and a couple of tiny white rabbits thrown in for good measure. Local shopping options were pretty limited in those days, which meant Mom spent long hours leafing through the catalogues in the fall, looking for what might be a nice gift. Not a car load of them. One nice gift per child! Supplementing this best guess order would be hand-knitted socks or perhaps a wool sweater lovingly woven
by a four foot eight Scottish master of practicality, Grandma Kinnear. Handknit woolen mittens with idiot strings, mittens that snow stuck to like glue in big balls. On Christmas Eve woman’s long brown stockings stuffed with Jap oranges, candy and perhaps a small toy would magically appear near the tree. This would generally happen after midnight mass when we were all supposedly asleep. My wife Lorraine recalls these brown curses which she referred to as Lyle stockings. Remember them? Those awful brown stockings that required garters to hold them up. Who the hell invented this awful leg garment? Probably a man! This is back when the edict, probably determined by a man, was that
women could not wear pants to school. Anyways, on the plus side, they held a lot of stuff like peppermint ribbon candy and perhaps a small toy. Mandarin oranges were a rarity back then, something we did not ever see, except on this festive occasion. AND they tasted really good, unlike today’s knockoffs. It’s a guessing game what a box of them will taste like these days. There were years when money was tight and Christmas really tested our family’s ability to keep up with the Jones’. My sister recalls dad making her a miniature wooden table and chairs and a cabinet, all painted in red, for her gift. It was something she cherished, just like the large wooden carved replica of a DC-3, like the one that crashed on Ptolemy, that I got that year. One year my older sister Betty got a blackboard for Christmas. It
had a message from Santa written on it and she never wanted that message to be erased. Her one great wish back then was for a Barbara Ann Scott doll. Barbara Ann was a Canadian champion figure skater who won the gold medal at the Olympics in Saint Moritz, Switzerland in 1948. She also won the Canadian championship from 1944 to 1948, the North American championship from 1945 to 1948, and the European and World championships in 1947 and 1948. Guess I dated my sister pretty good with this memory. I recall such longgone toys as meccano sets, tinker toys and miniature logs that could be assembled into a cabin. Of course the ultimate gift for young boys was the rarely seen miniature model steam engine with oscillating cylinder. Heat plus vapour equals magic. The glass ornaments were really fragile and
shattered easily and then there were those bubbling Christmas lights. Remember them? With methylene chloride inside and lead-coated wires to increase resistance. Beautiful percolating magic but a tad hazardous these days. Early tinsels, I recall, were lead foil which were mercifully replaced by polyvinyl chloride film with a metallic finish or coated mylar, both of which just don’t hang quite as nice as lead or silver strands. It used to be a pretty big deal to see how many boxes of tinsel went onto the tree. It was also a pretty big deal to see the cat walk by with a strand of it hanging out of his you-know-what. All in all I harken back to those simpler days when a little was a lot, the ginger ale bubbled in your nose and the joy of family being together at Christmas was all that was needed. A heartfelt wish from Lorraine and I to you all for a very Merry Christmas.
Thank You 2019 It’s that time of year when the Coleman Community Society can finally take a break from all our activities and thank everyone for what they contributed to the past year’s success. Beginning with July 1st, 2019 we need to thank those who participated in the terrific parade which included the small but mighty Cranbrook Bugle Bank. It was an afternoon of fun in Flumerfelt Park with good food provided by a variety of vendors and with special thanks to Lesley Margetak for her fabulous cakes enjoyed by all and to Lani Folkard for her musical entertainment and to Paul Pichurski for joining in. The Country Market during Doors Open was very successful thanks to all the vendors, music provided by Sig and Rose Gail , Tynan and Shelley Groves and family, and the volunteers from Horace Allen School who put on a very successful silent auction to benefit the school’s outdoor education classroom due to the many and varied donations from the community. Again our food vendors were a big part of the day in keeping everyone fed and watered. Congratulations to Thomas Margetak, this year’s 50/50 winner. Next was Pumpkins in the Park with a huge shout-out going to the Crowsnest/Pincher Creek Air Cadets for arranging over 250 pumpkins along the Miner’s Path and keeping them lit for all to enjoy throughout the evening. Spectators enjoyed the artistic endeavors and hot beverages handed out by the Society. Christmas in the Park enjoyed good weather for all who attended. The bonfire tended by the Crowsnest Pass Fire Department kept everyone warm before and enjoyed music from Sig and Rose. Afterwards they enjoyed the wagon rides through town, and hot beverages, hot dogs and cookies from the society aided by Grade 7 students from CCHS. Thank you also to the Coleman Legion, the Coleman Lions and Chris’ Restaurant for the candy bags which Santa gave to all the youngsters and of course, special thanks to Santa for his appearance. Special thanks to our sponsors this year: the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, Canadian Heritage; the Ag Society; and Benga Mining. Without these donations we could not carry on all the free events each and every year. To the newspapers and radio, thanks for getting the word out and covering our fun. Of course, no thank you would be complete without appreciating the Coleman Society volunteers and friends who put in their time to make these plans come to fruition. Volunteers are truly the backbone of our group without whom none of this would happen. If you would like to become a part of our Coleman Society our next meeting will take place on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at 6:30 at the Coleman Legion. See what we are all about and help us bring these fun activities to life for the people of our community and beyond.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL
