PrinciPal christine McKie’s address opening comments: Good afternoon graduates, parents, step-parents, guardians, staff, Trustee Greg Long, and Elder Peter Strikes with a Gun and his wife Jeannie Provost. My name is Christine McKie and I am honoured, as principal of Crowsnest Consolidated High School to be part of the Class of 2021’s graduation celebration this afternoon. Parting comments: Before this afternoon’s program ends I want to take a moment to bow our heads and collectively reflect on the tragic loss of 215 young indigenous souls that were spoken about but never documented in Tk’emlúps te Secwe̓pemc. Now, to find out today that another 751 unmarked graves have been discovered at a residential school site where children from the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) and Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan attended. This day is one of celebration, but as you leave high school and venture out into the world I ask you to become a changemaker in this world and commit to the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all indigenous peoples. This year’s graduates are an interesting crew. They are smart, tenacious, committed to their passions, fun loving, and look out for each other in the way that all small town graduating classes do. But you are more than that. Many of you also want to see change in this world. You want to see all humans treated equally regardless of gender, gender identity, sexual preference, race, religion, or socio-economic status. I know you will contribute to positive change in this world. Youth have always been at the forefront of challenging the status quo to re-shape our society...the Greenpeace movement, the Native Awakening, Gun Control and School Safety by the Parkland High School students, Black Lives Matter, LBGTQ2+...all social movements that started with youth. I challenge you to be part of movements for positive change in our world. When you cautiously entered into the school system in kindergarten, your families took that first step in letting you go. They entrusted us to care for your educational, social and emotional needs while you were at school. You moved through Horace Allen, Isabelle Sellon or other schools in different communities, finally arriving at CCHS and you learned many life lessons along the way: how to be a good friend, the importance of integrity, commitment, perseverance, acceptance, and staying true to yourself. When you leave us after today, take those lessons with you. They will serve you well in life. And while your future experiences will be filled with many new adventures, I ask you to remember your roots. Be proud of where you came from and be proud of who you are. Text, skype, facetime, or snapchat with your family, don’t forget to visit and keep the memory of your grade school years with you always. Congratulations graduates of 2021, it’s been a pleasure being your principal the last four years. christine McKie Principal (crowsnest consolidated high school)
Valedictorian address I can’t believe we’re graduating! Despite all the events that have happened this year, I am excited that we can all sit in this pretty gym to celebrate together. Hello, CCHS, parents, and the viewers, my name is Matthew Gil, and I am your valedictorian. Coming from an immigrant family, this means a lot to me. What makes our graduating class of 2021 special? Is it the cool lifted trucks? Is it the number of teachers this class may have made quit? No, it is everything. We have diversity... We have mechanics, welders, hockey players, swimmers, artists, writers, poets, we have a guy that can unicycle, and a girl that can ride horses. We also have questionable bakers; Hailey and Jorja made a cake this year that looked so ugly, they managed to make it look like pudding. Regardless of what you guys did, or what the next person has done, it has made you sit in this very gym. This reminds us that life moves on, time pushes forward and if you don’t know what kind of person you are, you will figure it out eventually. A part of our upbringing is due to the lovely teachers that have taught us on our journey. They have weathered along countless bad essays and kids throwing chairs around in class. Dear elementary school teachers, thank you for teaching us how to read and to play dodgeball. Dear junior high teachers, thank you for teaching us math and giving us an opportunity to explore our interests. Dear senior high teachers, thank you for teaching us about the human chorionic gonadotropin hormone. Thinking about your contributions makes my eyes moist. They moisten with tears. When you meet teachers who are passionate and knowledgeable about what they teach, it makes your approach to school very different, it makes it better. A huge thanks goes out to the parents, the caretakers, the guardians. Graduation may be a big deal for us, but it’s a bigger deal for you. This is a reminder that you kept your baby alive for eighteen years. All those early mornings packing lunch, the afternoon rides to practice, and midnights scraping up a last-minute Halloween costume, all have been worthwhile. Now you can relax and watch your children become the people that they have always wanted to be. To my class: there is a concept in biology/ science called emergence, and it refers to the existence or formation of collective behavior. An example of this would be water molecules bonding together to produce ocean waves, puddles, trees, and other plants forming forests. The cells in our bodies working together to keep us alive. Humanity is the same way, where everything we’ve achieved thus far was a product of collaboration and unity. No one gets anything done alone and it is hard to do things alone. So it’s important for us to have an understanding of one another. Read and listen to different perspectives, oppose bigotry, think critically, be educated, and be open to change. Be open to change, because the world is changing. The Earth is warming, skeletons are falling out of closets, the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer, history is getting revealed, and there are aliens. The world will change. I also want to tell you that everything is not going to be okay---that is a conspiracy theory. Shakespeare wrote tragedies for a reason. The road ahead of us is long, it’s on fire, it’s full of cliffs and twisted paths full of dead ends, it is unpredictable and random. This life is what we make of it, you’re not destined for any one thing. After all, Shakespeare did write comedies too, so go do something that makes you happy. Make art, explore, travel, take a nap, hug your parents, don’t be happy, do things that make you happy. Be passionate, take on a hobby, don’t be a jerk, and don’t be boring. I’m grateful for the experiences that you have given me, and I can’t wait to see the people that you all become. Congratulations class of 2021, thank you for everything. Matthew Gil

graD PresIDent sPeeCh Good afternoon, My name is Chris Collings and I am this year’s class president for those in attendance or over the live stream. We did it y’all! Especially with the last year and a half where there has been a lot of uncertainty. Although we couldn’t have the full celebration at the arena, we can at least have this celebration, with our parents in attendance. From those of us who strolled into kindergarten together and everyone else who has joined us along the way, we graduated. I would like to thank all of the staff and volunteers who have made this celebration as great as it is, as well as a special thanks to Chris’ restaurant for helping with the senior supper that turned into a massive success with the deliveries. The biggest thanks go to those who got us here, whether it be our families, teachers, or coaches. We look at people such as Mr. Gillispie, who took care of his students in and outside of the classroom, caring for our growth as well as our education, and I
wish him the best in his new chapter at Livingstone. Or Rory who coached Cam, Cole, Cooper, and Landen for what seems to be forever now, going from a hockey coach to a mentor and friend throughout the years. This celebration is also for those who have invested in us to see our growth as we close this chapter of our lives and begin a new one. For us, this celebration takes over our whole year. Today is a day for us to dress to the nines and have our last time together as a grade and celebrate as one as we close this chapter. We’ll be left with memories such as at least one teacher seeming to leave after teaching us, which is obviously a coincidence, but created the running joke, or the fart spray in the art room causing the entire class to spend 20 minutes in the hall before we were allowed back in. Or being left in a room for lunch and food ending up where food shouldn’t have been. And to memories outside school like going to provincials three times, or winning our home tournament. Now it will be on to the next adventure, and many new ones after that. So congratulations to everyone here. We did it! Thank you. Chris Collings
Message froM L.r.s.D. rUstIC Good afternoon Graduands , parents or guardians, other family members, Livingstone staff, and all quests. Ms Mckee informed me that the theme for your graduation is “Rustic”. I admit, I worried about how to begin this address using the theme rustic. As a senior I might be called rustic but certainly not you. Upon reflection it made sense. It is not a commonly used word anymore but it is very appropriate for your graduation. The term “Rustic Charm “is often used to describe something a person thinks is beautiful. You might not use the word beautiful to describe the celebration of your success but your accomplishment of completing grades K-12 is certainly outstanding and even beautiful, and your parents think you are beautiful, rustic. Rustic can mean rural. The Crowsnest Pass is certainly rural so, once again, graduands, a good theme choice. Many of you are probably anxious to move to an urban area, “there is nothing to do here”. But where do urban people go to “Get away “? To
the rustic Crowsnest Pass where you graduated. In fact, William Wordsworth, a famous English poet, stated that rural sights and sounds were good for the heart. How do you feel when you hike, bike, fish, hunt, and camp? And “Rustic” doesn’t mean you are a square person, or boring, or plain. Chad Kroeger, of Nickleback, is from Hanna, Alberta; singing star Celine Dion is from Charlemagne, Quebec; movie producer James Cameron is from Kapuskasing,Ontario; NHL star, Sidney Crosby is from Cole Harbor , Nova Scotia; and scientist Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin, was from Alliston, Ontario. All successful people. Congratulations for your achievement and especially for your success during a time of constant change. Last year I congratulated the graduands for being so resilient. Today I say the same to you. May you be blessed with a life of wellbeing and proud of your rustic roots. gregory Long Livingstone range school Division trustee Zone 2
Message froM the Mayor On behalf of Myself, Council and the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, I would like to wish all of the 2021 Graduating Class our deepest congratulations on this milestone in your pursuit of higher education and starting your new life. You have worked hard to get here and can be proud of your many accomplishments. Whether you have decided to continue your education by moving on to university, college, trades, or enter into the work force, we wish you the greatest success in what ever avenue you choose. Moving forward, life will change for you. You will be focused on your education, your job. Your income and expenses. You will meet new friends, loose contact with others. But just remember, the Crowsnest Pass will always be home and you will always be welcome here. The class of 2021 has proven to be a tough resilient group. You have endured two years of lockdowns and we have not seen the end of this COVID pandemic. Just remember to be positive, set goals for yourself, learn from your mistakes, be responsible, and be grateful and proud to be from the Crowsnest Pass. Please stay healthy and have a safe grad! Congratulations Class of 2021! Mayor Blair Painter
