PROJECT EXPERIENCE
WYLDEWOOD COVE, Collingwood, ON Wyldewood Cove is a 177-unit campus style residential waterfront community comprising seven, three-storey buildings arranged around a central courtyard. Landscape architecture services included comprehensive site planning and landscape architectural design. The design was heavily guided by environment-first principles while still considering the site’s four-season usage. The design included detailing several community amenity features, including pool, outdoor skating rink, waterfront patio, and waterfront-based recreational facilities. The site was designed adjacent to a Provincially Significant Wetland and Georgian Bay, which presented natural heritage constraints such as setbacks and buffers. These challenges were overcome by incorporating constraints areas into the landscape design. Naturalization zones were integrated into the landscape design, providing opportunities for scenic vistas, bird watching, and interpretation of the on-site 15 acre nature preserve, and interaction with Georgian Bay.
101 KOZLOV STREET, Barrie, ON Situated in the established Sunnidale neighbourhood, the 101 Kozlov residential development covers an area of approximately 2.37 ha. It consists of an existing seven-storey, 129-unit apartment building surrounded by asphalt parking lots and landscaped areas. The elements envisioned for the site consisted of six micro-build apartment buildings for an additional 88 units. The landscape design for this development balanced aesthetic appeal with functionality, sustainability, the needs of the residents and fiscally responsibility.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
MIDHURST HEIGHTS, Springwater, ON This collaboration achieves a harmonious integration of the built environment and its natural surroundings. In addressing the challenge posed by excess overland flow in this development, a compelling solution emerged during the design process. We recognized that the road network itself could convey the stormwater to the SWM Pond. The solution involved capturing a portion of the water within the park block and channeling it to the pond through a designated pipeline. This innovative approach required close teamwork between our landscape architecture and water resource teams. Together, they arranged the precise placement and shape of the capture facility. To enhance this interconnected design, a detailed concept was visualized with the help of informative graphics. These visuals provided the municipality with a clear understanding of how these two designs could function together. In addition to our internal collaboration on stormwater management, our team provided detailed landscape architectural design for a 97.24 ha, 1,440 unit residential community, which included streetscape, stormwater management blocks, master trails plan, community park and parkette design.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
CAMPBELL HOUSE – HOSPICE GEORGIAN TRIANGLE, Collingwood, ON Staff at Crozier completed the site plan and landscape design, coordinated consultants, and secured the required Planning Act approvals for this 10-bed hospice care home located in Collingwood, ON. The site plan and landscape design features a sanctuary garden, meditation pathway system and water feature. The elaborate gardens provide a profusion of colour yearround fostering habitat for birds and butterflies adding to the pastoral setting required for this important place.
GEORGIAN BAY HOTEL, Collingwood, ON Landscape Architectural staff at Crozier provided comprehensive site planning services, coordinated all Planning Act approvals, and completed all landscape design drawings and construction services. This 16-acre site involved design of vehicular and pedestrian circulation routes, landscape amenity ponds, a natural turf golf putting course, parkland creation and parking strategy for this hotel resort in Collingwood, ON.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE OUR LADY OF LOURDES, Waterloo, ON For this assignment Landscape Architectural staff at Crozier completed a comprehensive landscape plan that celebrated the statuary located throughout the church grounds. In addition, the grotto located behind the church was rejuvenated with walkway upgrades and accent plantings.
RESURRECTION MANOR – ST JEROME’S COLLEGE, Waterloo, ON This project involved a high degree of collaboration with the retired clergy residing in the Manor home. The staff at Crozier prepared a sanctuary garden amenity for the residents to use that focused on sun/shade opportunities, aesthetics, passive activities and providing the potential for social gatherings and family visitation areas within a park like setting.
LUTHER VILLAGE ON THE PARK, Waterloo, ON This aging in place community in Waterloo, ON involved site planning and landscape architecture that created a sense of place for this 20-acre residential campus. The design focused on encouraging mobility, interaction, and passive recreation. The site design features a public square, water feature, high quality landscape finishes and was designed to integrate the retirement community with the broader community context by including a children’s day care within the plan. For this assignment Landscape Architectural staff at Crozier completed the site plan, prepared all landscape design and construction drawings, and provided construction supervision services.
SUNNYSIDE HOME, Kitchener, ON This project involved the creation of a large-scale therapy garden where safety, ease of way finding, and sensory stimulation were the primary design parameters. Special design considerations were made to provide: a safe environment free of toxic plants and harmful sharp objects/edges; secure containment without the feeling of confinement; elimination of confusing patterns, shapes, colours, and shadow patterns; therapeutic value by stimulating activity via free form continuous poured concrete path systems and accessible planters; appeal to long term memory ability via nostalgic features such as benches, planting combinations, gazebos and large scale trees; and, special attention to visual impairment/perception by elimination of all obstacles including physical or perceived grade changes and linear barriers.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE CARWOOD GREEN, Kitchener, ON Coordinated with the Project Engineer to provide grading plans conducive to a barrier free design. Comprehensive landscape plans, construction drawings and specifications were completed for approvals by both Municipal and Provincial agencies. This project was given the 1999 Urban Design Award of Excellence from the City of Kitchener.
THE CEDARS (TEMPLE SHALOM), Waterloo, ON The Cedars in Waterloo, ON is believed to be Canada’s first purpose-built Jewish-Christian House of Worship. It is home to both Temple Shalom and Westminster United Church congregations. For this project Landscape Architectural staff now with Crozier collaborated with the project Architect to prepare the site plan, then to complete the Comprehensive Landscape Plans. The plan was designed to minimize landscape maintenance obligations all while accentuating the architectural and site aesthetic and reinforcing the cedar theme.
PARTICIPATION HOUSE, Kitchener, ON This project required the barrier-free site design associated with a 30-unit residence for persons with physical challenges. Special design considerations were given for features such a wheelchair accessible planter boxes, continuous poured concrete patio and walk system, naturalized planting feature and linkage to existing parkland.
UNION GAS, Brantford, ON Provided comprehensive design services for this technologically advanced building employing a highly naturalistic approach to site landscaping and stormwater polishing. Conducted an initial site review to identify development opportunities and constraints. The site planning was then undertaken first principles to fix building footprint and servicing corridors. A naturalistic restoration plan was developed which incorporated the preservation and enhancement of an existing wetland, and creation of woodland and tall-grass prairie ecosystems. The comprehensive plan was developed as a restoration of the site to the pre-settlement conditions documented in Brant County using botanical models which still exist as remnants along local railway beds. A maintenance protocol, economic performance mode, environmental education package and the public participation/interpretation component were also developed. The success of this award-winning project can be gauged by endorsements received from all Agencies including special recognition of the project by Ontario’s Minister of the Environment for responsible land stewardship by a Corporate Entity and the Consul General of the United States for improvements to the Great Lakes Watershed.
