New & Upcoming Our Wisdom Years “ Inviting, illuminating, and informative, this book captures the essence of a master class on aging.” —David Sheff, Author of the New York Times #1 Bestseller Beautiful Boy
Growing Older with Joy, Fulfillment, Resilience, and No Regrets Charles Garfield, PhD Psychologist and best-selling author Charles Garfield shares an uplifting vision as he takes us on the journey of a lifetime. Some of the most profound growth of our lives can happen in the home stretch, the years after age sixty or so. It’s a time when we can finally crystallize the meaning of what we’ve been and done so far and fully expand into the self we’ve always intended to be, guided by the voice of the soul. But, says psychologist Charles Garfield, that can only happen if we first loosen the grip of the life we’ve led so far, the one that’s been focused outwardly—on activity, achievement, and the idea of success—and let our souls lead the way. CHARLES GARFIELD, PHD, founded Shanti Project, an internationally honored volunteer organization dedicated to the care of the dying and those living with cancer and AIDS, and the Shanti National Training Institute, which takes Shanti’s model to organizations around the world. A Fellow of the American Psychological Association, he is currently a research scholar at the Starr King School of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.

Garfield is an eloquent writer whose voice is authentic and relatable. Despite the (sometimes) scary challenges of growing older, his expressive descriptions make aging a more inspired rather than fearful journey.

Writing the Big Book The Creation of A.A.
William H. Schaberg The definitive history of writing and producing the “Big Book” of Alcoholics Anonymous, told through extensive access to the group’s archives. Alcoholics Anonymous is arguably the most significant selfhelp book published in the twentieth century. Released in 1939, the “Big Book,” as it’s commonly known, has sold an estimated 37 million copies, been translated into seventy languages, and spawned numerous recovery communities around the world while remaining a vibrant plan for recovery from addiction in all its forms for millions of people. While there are many books about A.A. history, most rely on anecdotal stories told well after the fact by Bill Wilson and other early members— accounts that have proved to be woefully inaccurate at times. Writing the Big Book brings exhaustive research, academic discipline, and informed insight to the subject not seen since Ernest Kurtz’s Not-God, published forty years ago.

WILLIAM SCHABERG is a scholar and rare book dealer based in Fairfield, Connecticut. His interest in the history of ideas led him to amass a large collection of first edition philosophy texts and inspired his first scholarly work, The Nietzsche Canon: A Publication History and Bibliography, (University of Chicago Press, 1995). Schaberg has delivered lectures on Nietzsche, William James, and other philosophers with his mentor King Dykeman at his alma mater, Fairfield University. He has served in the United States Air Force and ran a family printing business for over thirty years before retiring to commit more energy to his bookselling business, Athena Rare Books. Schaberg’s scholarly investigation into the authorship of Alcoholics Anonymous was an eleven-year project that, like his Nietzsche book, began with bibliographical confusion over the text’s prepublication history and culminated in an unprecedented chronology of the “Big Book” origins.

Change Yourself, Change Your World Mark B. Borg, Jr., PhD
“ If you had to design the perfect person to tell you how NOT to be a dick, Mark’s the guy. . . . I can assure you that Mark is the anti-dick. He’s also witty and knowledgeable. Don’t be a dick—buy this book.” —Hara Estroff Marano, Author of A Nation of Wimps, editor at large for Psychology Today
The single book therapists everywhere will recommend to all of their patients, because at some point or another, we all behave like dicks. Anyone, at any time, can be a dick. Yet Don’t Be a Dick is especially for people who have noticed how their own behavior tends to backfire, leaving them feeling isolated and unsure why their seemingly justified actions consistently yield such poor results. If you’re constantly using the refrain, “It’s not me, it’s them” whenever something goes wrong, Mark Borg is here to tell you that it is, in fact, you. The good news is there is something you can do to reverse these behaviors and live a happier, more fulfilling life. DR. MARK BORG, is a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst who has been in private practice in New York City since 1998. Originally from Southern California, he moved to New York in 1997 to accept the position of Director of Psychology at the 5th Avenue Center for Psychotherapy, a West Village community center. New & Upcoming 400 Friends and No One to Call
Breaking through Isolation and Building Community Val Walker
“ Her clear, empathetic, and compassionate voice carries the reader through an understanding of the forces that isolate us, and the tools they need to break past those feelings of isolation.” —Allie Cashel, Author of Suffering the Silence: Chronic Lyme Disease in an Age of Denial, and Founder of Suffering the Silence Community, Inc.
A friendly, candid, and sensible guide for seeking comfort during isolating times when you have no one to count on. Val Walker has woven into the narrative her own story as a single, fifty-eight-year-old woman who found herself stranded after major surgery. As a well-established rehabilitation counselor, she was too embarrassed to reveal on social media how utterly isolated she was by asking for someone to help, and it felt agonizingly awkward calling colleagues out of the blue. As she recovered, Val found her voice and developed a plan of action for people who lack social support, not only to heal from the pain of isolation, but to create a solid strategy for rebuilding support. 400 Friends and No One to Call spells out the how-tos for befriending our wider community, building a social safety net, and fostering our sense of belonging. On a deeper level, we are invited to befriend our loneliness, rather than feel ashamed of it, and open our hearts and minds to others trapped in isolation. VAL WALKER is the author of The Art of Comforting: What to Say and Do for Others in Distress (Penguin/Random House, 2010). Educated in the field of counseling, with a Master of Science degree in rehabilitation counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University, Val has followed her passion for comforting others since facilitating her first support group in 1993. As a grief consultant, speaker, and author, she deeply believes in breaking through the barriers that isolate us by building our confidence as well as our communities.

LIBRARY JOURNAL REVIEW Using her own experience as a military widow as well as the voices of other parents, counselor Steen (founder, Grief Solutions) presents coping techniques and tips to deal with the unique challenges that come with losing a son or daughter in the service. The author points out that such grief has a long shelf life, and that images and symbols of our country (e.g., the flag) are personal reminders of their loss. Steen assists not only Gold Star families but also friends and extended family members when discussing what to say at the funeral, helping in practical ways after a funeral, and support through the long haul. VERDICT A heart-wrenching yet practical, positive look at a somewhat hidden issue.

Understanding the Addiction of a Loved One Ellen Van Vechten, JD, MSW, CADC
A lawyer turned drug counselor examines the disruption many families endure when addiction impacts their lives. Based in part on her own family’s journey, Ellen Van Vechten explains the science of addiction, the theory of treatment, and the twelve-step model of recovery, providing sensible information and tips for reasoned action in support of a loved one while fostering personal growth and recovery. Powerlessness over another’s addiction has a caustic effect on the family. Too often parents and partners equate “letting go” with “giving up.” While acceptance of a lack of control is essential to coping with the disease within the family system, there is nothing passive about supporting a partner or child in their journey to recovery. This concept is the foundation of Van Vechten’s original approach to empower individuals with knowledge, which when coupled with acceptance allows any family dealing with active addiction to make thoughtful and reasoned decisions to facilitate the recovery of both their loved ones and themselves. ELLEN VAN VECHTEN, JD, MSW, CADC, practiced law for over thirty years. She obtained a MSW in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago, with an emphasis in Alcohol and Drug Counseling in the State of Illinois.

“ A n easy read, filled with help, goodwill, and hope. I am wildly enthusiastic about this book!” —Jean Illsley Clark, Bestselling Author of Growing Up Again
A step-by-step program on how to recognize narcissism in ourselves and others and respond in healthy ways. Narcissism, in all its forms, is a belief that the world revolves around us, and that what happens in the world happens because of us. Most of us live with a common form of narcissism so deeply embedded that we don’t even know we have it. This “everyday narcissism” (EN) comes from a combination of childhood wounds and powerful myths we were taught as children. Everyday Narcissism helps readers understand how EN manifests in their own lives and teaches them how to heal it, providing a foundation for creating greater happiness, more fulfilling relationships, less reactivity, and more meaning. NANCY VAN DYKEN is a Licensed Psychologist and Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Minneapolis. She specializes in counseling individuals, couples, parents, and teens with depression and anxiety and has helped people heal relationships of all kinds for over thirty years. She has led workshops for Health Partners and for PESI Mental Health Continuing Education.

A Mother’s Story of Her Son’s Addiction Sandra Swenson
“ Swenson displays a valuable focus on how the toxic corrosion of addiction affects relationships with family and friends.” —Library Journal
Sometimes addicts don’t recover, but with love and faith their families can. By the age of twenty, Joey had OD’d, attempted suicide, dropped out of college, survived a near-fatal car accident, done time behind bars, and been kicked out of rehab. Now manipulative and hateful, the once sweet and charming Joey is long gone. This is the poignant story of a defiant addict and the mother who won’t give up on him. She finally realizes that it hurts more to hang on than to let go, and that letting go is not the same as giving up. Sandra Swenson beautifully orchestrates a mother’s lessons of love and loss, while surviving her son’s addiction. Despairing parents of addicts will find comfort in this stark, yet hopeful tale. SANDRA SWENSON is the mother of two sons. As a member of the Junior Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase, she created Bistro Boyz, a program for young men from the National Center for Children and Families’ Greentree Adolescent Program.
