Capital City Camera Club

A note from the Club President . . . First Steps ! I would never have imagined as I walked into the July meeting of the Capital City Camera Club that I would walk out having been elected to the office of club president. During the 5-1/2 years that Chuck Rice served as president, he worked tirelessly, made some remarkable strides and left me with some really big shoes to fill. I intend to step up to the challenge and, with your help, use his tradition of excellence as my guide. We have an outstanding new board of officers as well as some equally talented members who have volunteered to serve on several of our committees. I look forward to working with each and every one of them. The officers and committee members are listed on the previous page, and we have already begun working on future programs, field trips, workshops and activities designed to teach us, entertain us, and whet our creative appetites. Additionally, we are exploring ways to get more membership information out to the community and reach others who share our interest in photography. Please don’t hesitate to discuss your ideas with us to help in the planning process or, even better, volunteer to serve on one of the committees yourself. I encourage you to be an active partner in growing our club. Thank you for the confidence in me and support you have expressed. By working together, we can continue to make the Capital City Camera Club the best ever!

Sue Sizemore

J M Ms Chuck Rice conducted the July 13, 2010, meeting of the Capital City Camera Club and opened the meeting by welcoming several new guests. Chuck reminded the members that he had resigned as President at the June meeting because of newly assigned work responsibilities and also pointed out that the office of Vice President and Secretary had not been actively held for some time. He called for the nomination and election of new officers. The following officers were elected: President - Sue Sizemore; Vice President - Renette Jodoin; and Secretary - Rhonda Goode. Chuck will remain on the Executive Board as Past President. Bryan Hasler was elected Treasurer at the June meeting to replace Don Ball. Chuck then addressed the need for active committees to help the club be all that it can be. He called for volunteers and the following committees were filled. It was decided a business meeting of the club officers and committee members would be held on July 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Eastmont Baptist Church. FIELD TRIP COMMITTEE: MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: PROGRAM COMMITTEE:

Jennifer Barker, Jennifer Brown, Pam Long, Carl Saunders and Darryl Spaulding Roger Jodoin, Mit Fontaine, and Jackie Webber Betty Beasley, Diana Bunch, Patsy Heaton and Caryl Lawson

Ribbons were presented to winners of the June competition, and it was decided that the August On-line Competition theme will be “Eyes.” Refreshments were provided by Robin Bradford and Sue Sizemore. Mit Fontaine, Caryl Lawson, and Pam Long volunteered to provide refreshments for next month’s meeting. Caryl Lawson won the door prize. The next meeting is August 9 and will be a competition night with the categories: “Abstract” and “Open.” Respectfully submitted. Rhonda Goode, Secretary

CCCC Field Trip - September 18, 2010

In the 1930s, Cason and Virginia Callaway discovered a place of pristine beauty with exquisite natural springs in west central Georgia. Because of their enchantment with the area, they purchased thousands of acres of depleted cotton fields, including the land that is Callaway Gardens today. With a mind towards conservation, the Callaways began developing the environment, cultivating the native flora—including the rare prunifolia azalea (aka the plumleaf azalea) that grows wild here—and creating a respite from the world. Their plans were to invite their closest friends to their retreat, but as the Gardens began to take shape, they longed to share it with everyone. Their dreams came true in 1952 when Ida Cason Gardens opened to the public.

Gardens Admission Admission to Callaway Gardens includes the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center; Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center; John A. Sibley Horticultural Center; Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden; Callaway Brothers Azalea Bowl; Overlook Azalea Garden; Discovery Bicycle Trail (bicycles are available for rent); Pioneer Log Cabin; Birds of Prey Shows (check event calendar for show times); Ida Cason Callaway Memorial Chapel; nature trails and daily programs.
