Publisher: James R. Clevenson executive assistant: Jade Kirsop ART DIRECTOR, production coordinator, cover design / photo, LaYOUT: Robert Titov Sales Manager: Frank McGivern Congratulations! You have just opened a great way to make your summer more fun, more interesting and a heck of a lot more adventurous. Within these pages are music and stage venues; museums; hotels, motels and campgrounds; restaurants; and attractions - both natural and man-made. There are farms and farmer’s markets to meander, camps for the kids and even services for the home during these summer months. Many are in the Capital Region, and many more are a relatively short drive away. Most importantly, there are new geographic regions for you to discover. Whether it’s the majesty and fun of the Adirondack lakes and trails around Old Forge and Inlet, or the peaceful, laidback nature of the Catskill mountains and valleys in Schoharie and Delaware counties, you can find places to stay, locations to dine and attractions to visit, some of which you may not have considered before. In this, our 39th year, we have re-imagined, re-designed and, in short, re-invented this entertaining and informative publication to provide you greater accessibility than ever before. Now you can enjoy a more interactive experience with our contributors by using your smart phone, tablet or computer to access their websites, get directions and learn about them throughout the entire year by visiting our website: capitalregionsummerscene.com. T
he Hyde Collection is an art museum and historic house with an extraordinary collection of over 3,300 objects that span the history of Western art, including high caliber artworks by Old Masters such as Sandro Botticelli, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and Jacopo Tintoretto; modern masters such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, and a fine collection of American art with works by George Bellows, Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, and Winslow Homer. The Museum is a product of the golden age of the private art collector (c. 1890-1940) and an example of a rare genre of museums created during the American Renaissance. One of the few organizations of its kind in Upstate New York, The Hyde is part of the legacy of dedicated art collectors who acquired objects of artistic significance, amassed collections, and left them for the public to experience and enjoy within an environment created for their display. Charlotte Pruyn Hyde established The Hyde Collection as a nonprofit educational trust in 1952, dedicating her estate and art collection to the community with a vision, “to promote and

e invite you to discover our little town of Inlet, surrounded by lakes, ponds, streams, and miles of recreation trails. Families have been returning to Inlet for generations to experience the perfect Adirondack vacation in fresh, pine-scented air. Inlet is a gateway to the Moose River Recreation Area which offers a multitude of recreational possibilities. “The Plains,” as it is also known, encompasses 50,000 acres that vary in landscape from the flatness of the herb and grass plains of the Moose and Red Rivers to the sometimes gentle and often steep pitches of the adjoining forested ridges and mountains. With over 100 primitive tent sites, miles of trails and access to many waterways, the MRRA is a wonderful place to “get back to nature” and find peace and solitude. Inlet has two town parks. Fern Park offers a medley of sports venues: a baseball field, an outdoor basketball court and playground set, a covered pavilion with basketball nets that becomes an ice-skating/hockey rink in the winter with warming rooms and public restrooms. In addition, the Park is the trailhead for miles of mountain-biking, hiking, cross-country skiing and snow-

ld Forge, sitting at the foot of the Fulton Chain of Lakes, is ground zero for family recreation. As the southwestern portal to the 6-million acre Adirondack Park, Old Forge serves as the classic mountain resort, with all services, accommodations and attractions immediately available. Best of all, solitude lives only five minutes from Main Street. spread throughout the Adirondack forest. Like the waterways, the Forest Preserve embraces Old Forge and neighboring villages such as Eagle Bay, Big Moose and Stillwater, offering hiking, biking and horse trails. The summer scenic chairlift at McCauley Mountain Ski and Recreation Center offers views to Mt. Marcy and the High Peaks Region and access to hiking and mountain biking trails. The trail system also connects to Old Forge village. McCauley is especially popular during the Fall Foliage season. The restored fire tower on Bald Mountain makes it the second most popular mountain hike in the Adirondacks. The accessibility and variety of many nearby trails to lakes and mountain views makes the area ideal for families. The Adirondack Scenic Railroad offers several different excursion and sightseeing trains, departing from the Thendara Historic District station. Most popular are the River & Rail Trains and the Bike Trains. Paddlers enjoy cruising down the Moose River, and are picked up by the train for the return trip. Bikers ride the train to Carter Station or Big Moose, then bike back to Old Forge utilizing the Town-owned and maintained trail system. The well marked trails, mostly two track dirt road type, meander through more than 200 square miles of forested mountains and waterways. Water is king in this Central Adirondacks region, with dozens of lakes and three branches of the Moose River. The Moose, famous for both leisurely paddling and high adventure whitewater, flows through Old Forge and is
home to canoe and kayak outfitters and New York’s largest whitewater rafting companies. The area is overflowing with ponds and small lakes, some easily accessible and some remote, connected by well marked trails. Old Forge is the western terminus of the 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail to Maine, and the starting point of the annual “90-Miler” Adirondack Canoe Classic. The Fulton chain of Lakes, the original transportation corridor since the mid-1800s, today serves the boating public traveling to campsites such as Alger Island, as well as resorts and lakeside communities. Old Forge is home to Enchanted Forest Water Safari, New York’s largest water-theme park. It’s spread throughout the Adirondack forest, and features more than 50 rides and slides, animals and a circus. Old Forge Lake Cruises relive the days when waterways were the Adirondack highways. View, the New Arts Center in Old Forge, has fostered a new cultural era. The influence of its nationally renowned shows and exhibits has created a groundswell of arts culture throughout the community, nurturing new galleries and activities such as the First Friday Artwalks. The Central Adirondacks have provided the premier stage upon which North Country have played for 150 years. Visitors come to Old Forge for recreation and relaxation, and find an endless variety of natural and cultural resources. The schedule of events and activities fill the calendar every week of the year. Old Forge feels like everyone’s home town, and one is a stranger here only until he or she arrives. A comfortable, welcoming attitude is the hallmark of the community and its people. Scan the QR code to visit the Old Forge website to see everything Old Forge has to offer. www.oldforgeny.com

dirondack Saddle Tours has been offering horseback rides since 1984. We offer many types of rides, from one-hour rides to several half-day rides to wilderness lakes where you can pack a picnic or even BBQ. My most popular rides are my longer rides into the wilderness lakes. I’m lucky to have two of the prettiest wilderness lakes in our area to ride to. Everyone gets a basic lesson and understands how to ride before we leave our stable, so there is no previous riding experience necessary. While I always offer a great riding experience to everyone that visits, one of the reasons I’ve stayed in the horse business is because, 26 years ago, a group of adult cerebral palsy sufferers from Catholic charities in Rochester NY rode with me. For more information, call 518-874-0800, or online at www.atfestival.org. Jun 26 - Jul 6 HEARTBREAKER: TWO MONTHS WITH JUDY GARLAND, by John Meyer. In 1968, when he was 26, songwriter John Meyer met Judy Garland. The next two months were an emotional roller-coaster, but his life was changed forever. Inspired by his acclaimed memoir, Meyer brings to the stage the true story of his romance with a star whose flame was dying and how he attempts to rescue her from her self-destructive demons.
From a bar on the Upper Eastside to living with Garland in his childhood bedroom at his parent’s home to a London night club and many incredible adventures in between, Meyer’s whirlwind tale is an authentic portrayal written by the man who lived it. Meyer’s tunes, including “I Want to Hate Myself in the Morning” were sung by Garland on national TV, and will be part of the show’s score. Jul 11 - 20 FILMING O’KEEFFE World premiere play set on the shores of Lake George by Eric Lane. Max, a gifted high school student, is making a film about the artists Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz. When his estranged grandfather shows up unexpectedly, the family must wrestle with choices made
years before. Inspired by the years O’Keeffe and Stieglitz spent at his estate on Lake George, echoes of this artistic couple’s passionate and turbulent relationship reverberate in Lane’s lyrical and funny play. Filming O’Keeffe mark’s the return of ATF’s Founding Artistic Director Martha Banta to the directing chair since her departure in 2007. Jul 25 - Aug 3 AVENUE Q The Tony Award-Winning Musical full of puppets and people, by Robert Lopex, Jeff Marx and Jeff Whitty. Part flesh (humans), part felt (puppets), and packed with heart, Avenue Q is a laugh-out-loud musical. Meet Princeton a recent college grad who moves into a shabby apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets Kate

(the girl next door), Rod (a Republican), Trekkie (an internet sexpert), Lucy the Slut (need we say more?), Gary Coleman, and many other colorful types who help Princeton discover his life’s purpose. Avenue Q at ATF will be headed by artists involved with the Broadway production. Gary Adler, an ATF regular (Altar Boyz, Tick,Tick…BOOM! and more) was the show’s original music director. And Jennifer Barnhart, the show’s director, was in the Broadway cast. Rick Lyons designed and built the puppet for Broadway. This outstanding team is bringing their expertise to Glens Falls for this very funny musical. Jul 18 - 20 2nd Act Cabaret with David Finch, accoustic musical fun.
David Finch impressed audiences last summer with his multi-instrumental talents in ATF’s hit production of Woody Sez. From the guitar to the banjo and even the spoons, David had toes-a-tapping. This summer he returns to ATF for an acoustic cabaret act certain to delight. The evening will feature songs from some of the musicians and songwriters who influenced him as well as some of his own songs. His musical Careless Love (written with Ryan Dunkin) received its world premiere last summer in Westport, NY at The Depot Theater. Actor/musician Louis Tucci will be joining David for the Cabaret. Tucci is also an ATF Alum having performed in the hit show of 2002, Guys on Ice as well as Mimi Le Duck (2004). The 2nd Act Cabaret is a special program that
allows audiences to get to know ATF artists in a more intimate performance environment. Hidden talents, off-beat comedy as well as personal stories of life in the theatre and their time at ATF are the highlights of the 2nd Act Cabaret experience. Past cabaret artists have included Gary Adler, Howie Michael Smith, Phoebe Kreutz, Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair. Jul 28 - 29 Bailey’s Crossroads Opportunity School by Hal Corely, a new play reading. The heart of ATF’s mission is the development of new plays and musicals. Each summer the company selects and presents a reading of a new work. The process allows audiences not only a glimpse into the creative process, but also a chance to participate Continued on Page 18)
18 (Continued from Page 17) actively in the creation of the play (through participating in a post-show conversation with the playwright. This year the tradition continues with the return of playwright Hal Corley and his latest piece – a two person comedy filled with humor, nostalgia and heart. On a stormy night in 1959, a Virginia couple with an emptied nest shakily embarks on a new enterprise: teaching an adult night class on “Family Dollars and Sense.” Amateur gurus both from humble roots yet harbingers of the self-help movement that would follow a decade later, Thaddeus and Sunny Popper aim to instruct their students in cost-saving domestic tips, from meatless meals to retirement goals. As the weather worsens and
a power failure threatens, the squabbling but loving partners vie for their attendees’ attention – and the temporary spotlight – and end up illuminating both their personal story and a Thurberesque chapter of recent American history. Hal Corley and Mark Fleischer last teamed up to develop and premier Brush the Summer By at ATF in 2010. As with Banta and Lane with Filming O’Keeffe, ATF prides itself on developing longstanding relationships among artists that nurture the development of new work and artistic growth leading to exciting shows for audiences. The reading will feature Capital District actress Brenny Rabine and NYC actor Michael Irvin Pollard. Aug 9 and 10
Faraway Nearest One A reading of the letters of O’Keeffe and Stieglitz Starring Carolyn McCormick of Law and Order. From 1915 to 1946 Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) and Alfred Stieglitz (18641946) wrote over 5,000 letters to one another. Their correspondence captures the passion, conflict, and deep love of art that permeated their lives together as acquaintances, lovers, and eventually husband and wife. elaxing in the Catskills means experiencing the great outdoors – paddling the reservoirs, casting a line, roaming the back roads, exploring legendary mountains and the wildlife within. If you love the outdoors, Delaware County Awaits. If biking is your passion, Delaware County has spectacular roadside scenery and mile after mile of peaceful trails. These have made Delaware County a popular focus for biking. Biking trails run from mild to wild. The Catskill Scenic Trail is the former rail bed of the Delaware & Ulster Railroad that only has a 400 foot change in elevation over its 26 mile length. On the other hand, Plattekill Ski Center in Roxbury offers 60+ miles of lift served trails with 1600 feet of vertical drop. Choose your own speed. If your interest is in bike touring, check out State Routes 10 and 30 which border the Pepacton and Cannonsville Reservoirs. The scenery is spectacular and it is a real treat to see eagles and other wildlife that live near the reservoirs. Speaking of the reservoirs, both the Cannonsville and Pepacton are now available for canoe and kayak use. These pristine waters that are part of the NY City drinking water supply, are unmatched for beauty and cleanliness. What better place to enjoy unspoiled nature at its finest. If fishing is your sport, Delaware County has nearly 700 miles of trout streams. These include famous streams like the Beaverkill, East and West Branches of the Delaware River, and the main stem of the Delaware after the two branches meet in Hancock. In addition, there are many smaller streams that have public access points for you to enjoy. The fishing here is absolutely spectacular. One of the favorite pastimes for outdoor enthusiasts that are visiting the
county is hunting. There are thousands of acres of NY State and NY City owned land open for recreational use. Make sure you check the web sites for NY City DEP, and NY State DEC to see which lands are open and when they are available. The wildlife is plentiful and the scenery is unmatched. Camping opportunities are abundant with State Parks at Bear Spring Mountain in Walton, Beaver Kill and East Branch State Forests, Little Pond State Park in Turnwood, and Oquaga State Park in Masonville. There are also several privately owned camping facilities throughout the county. If hiking, solitude and primitive camping are what you want, check out the recreational opportunities in the Catskill Park. There are 42,000 acres within Delaware County which are managed by NY State DEC. Please check their website for information about access to this spectacular recreational facility located in the eastern portion of the county. This park is a must see for those who appreciate nature and all the opportunities this facility offers. Delaware County has many other hiking venues for you to enjoy. The Headwaters Trail System in the Stamford is a superior network of trails based around Mount Utsayantha which offer stunning views of the surrounding area. Several parks offer networks of hiking trails for public use. Take a look at Bear Spring Mountain, Beaverkill, East Branch State Forest, and Little Pond State Park. As you can see, Outdoor recreation is what Delaware County is all about. Give us a try, you will not be disappointed. Scan the QR code for more information on Delaware County and the Great Catskills.

ince 1997, the Franklin Stage Company has established itself as a unique presence in the Western Catskills. A professional not-for-profit theatre company, FSC produces classical plays, new works adapted from classic texts, and 20th century plays with classical themes, because we believe that this work most effectively confronts and exalts the breadth of shared human experience. FSC offers Free Admission (donations gratefully accepted) because we believe the experience of shared stories is crucial for the health of society. Together, we have built not a community theatre, but a professional theatre for a community. FSC is recognized for its unexpected interpretations, its high level of artistry, and its ability to make the most challenging texts accessible and compelling - from Shakespeare to Pinter, from
Seneca to Noel Coward. We attract a large, loyal and diverse audience. In fact, over its 16 consecutive summer seasons, FSC has presented 30 classical plays, 5 original ones, and hosted world class performances in various disciplines, for a cumulative audience of over 50,000 theatre-goers who travel great distances - easily from within a 70-mile radius of Franklin, and sometimes further - to see our shows, and then donate generously at the door on their way out! FSC has a dual mission - presenting theatre and maintaining our magnificent 1854 home, Chapel Hall. We were delighted this spring to complete the repair, restoration and painting of the exterior. This project was made possible with funds awarded from the Delaware County Local Development Corporation’s Franklin Village, NY Main Street Program; the George A. & Margaret Mee Charitable Foundation; the A. Lindsay & Olive B. O’Connor Foundation of Hobart, Inc.; The 1772 Foundation; Assael, Inc.; and Sylvia Sichel. For the latest information on our performances, scan the QR code, or call (607) 829-3700.

he Phoenicia International Festival of the voice presents its 4th season. The festival has garnered a reputation for extraordinary quality and season 4 is no exception. This year is the bicentennial celebration of Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner. In honor of these mega-giants, the festival will feature Verdi’s tragic opera ‘Rigoletto’ with an international cast along with his great ‘Messa di Requiem’. Wagner will be featured in ‘Voices of Distinction-Wagner’- arias, duets and ensembles from the great German composer’s operas sung by some great Wagnerian voices, accompanied by Duo Lontano (internationally acclaimed pianists Babette Hierholzer and Jurgen Appell). Where else can you go to hear Verdi and Wagner sung by artists from the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Paris
Opera and Covent Garden for Catskill prices!? Other highlights of the festival include perennial favorites the Cambridge Chamber singers. Justin Kolb and Carey Harrison are back in a program called ‘Virtuosity and Oratory’. Alongside them will be The Art of the Cantor, featuring Jacob Mendelson (star of PBS special ‘A Cantor’s Tale’) and ‘The Spirit of Sepharad’ with Gerard Edery. The award-winning play, “Masterclass” (about the life of Maria Callas) will be part of this year’s festival, directed by Broadway director Shauna Kanter. Ensemble Pi, the socially conscious experimental chamber group starring the Catskill’s own Idith Meshulam, will bring new works to the festival stage. Besides her entertaining and informative Latte Lectures, Cori Ellison, the newly appointed dramaturge of the Glyndebourne Festival, will do a masterclass with four very fine young artists. To kick off VoiceFest 2013, there will be an amazing gospel concert with some of the finest gospel singers and musicians in the metropolitan area. FSC Hosts: Opera Oggi New York. Two one-act comic operas Saturday June 15 at 8 and Sunday June 16 at 5. La Serva Padrona or The Servant turned Mistress composed by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. Originally performed as an intermezzo between the acts of a larger serious opera, this is an enduring and enchanting example of 18th century “opera buffa,” characterized by comic characters in everyday settings. Performed in Italian with English surtitles.
The Telephone or L’Amour à trois. An English-language comic opera in one-act created by Gian Carlo Menotti in 1947. Funny, familiar and musically intricate. Under the Artistic Directorship of Thomas Lawrence Toscano, this self-proclaimed “unorthodox indie-opera company” produces high quality productions with the finest young singers in unique venues in diverse neighborhoods in NYC. Mettawee River Theatre Company Taliesin. Friday July 26 at 8:00pm A medieval Welsh tale of sorcery and court intrigue. The power of inspiration is accidentally bestowed on an unlikely kid, who can suddenly see beyond everyday reality, becoming Taliesin which means “radiant brow.” Returning to FSC for the fourth time, Mettawee’s production features a mesmerizing and magical medley of giant figures, puppets, masks and live music in this celebration of transformation and imagination; for all the family. he Berkshire Choral Festival was founded in 1982. It was a new idea about a unique way of learning and singing choral music, in a rich and artistically stimulating setting. Over thirty years later, we still hold to the philosophy that choral music is best when it is studied, absorbed, discussed and mulled over by choristers and conductors together – in total immersion – until it makes sense as a genuine revelation and expression of the human spirit. Each concert’s repertoire is carefully chosen to capture the full range and glory of choral music. Berkshire Choral Festival is committed to provide audiences with stirring performances of the first rank. Each year the festival brings together a remarkable array of choristers, soloists, conductors and repertoire for voices and symphony orchestra. This sum-
