a brief HISTORY OF CUNARD
1839: Samuel Cunard establishes the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company - known as the Cunard Line - principally to carry the Royal Mail to Canada and the USA. 1840: The 1,154-ton paddle steamer Britannia, and three near sisterships, Acadia, Caledonia and Columbia, enter service. These vessels make the Atlantic voyage in 14 days at 8.5 knots and maintain weekly departures from Liverpool. 1906 / 1907: The liners Lusitania and Mauretania launched. The latter holds the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing for 22 years. 1912: On 15 April the Carpathia rescues all the survivors from White Star’s Titanic. 1914: The First World War interrupts Cunard’s fleet development as Cunard called into active service. Cunard carries over one million troops and ten million tons of cargo for the war cause. 22 ships including the Lusitania - lost.
the two ships helped shorten the war in Europe by at least a year.
ship fleet receives the highest ratings by Berlitz ‘Complete Guide to Cruising and Cruise Ships’. Four ships are ranked number one in their respective categories.
2007: On the 15 January the Queen Victoria is floated out of dry dock. On the 11 December the Queen Victoria sails on her maiden voyage.
1998: In May, a Carnival Corporationled consortium purchases Cunard from Kvaerner for $500 million and merges the company with Seabourn Cruise Line to form Cunard Line Limited. In June the new company announces ‘Project Queen Mary’ – a proposal to build the biggest passenger liner ever.
2008: On the 13 January all three Cunard Queens were in New York together. The QE2 sailed on her final voyage "QE2 Final Voyage" bound for Dubai and thus leaves the shores of the UK forever.
2000: On 9 March, Cunard signs letter of intent with Chantiers de l’Atlantique (France) for Queen Mary 2 which will be the largest, longest, widest and tallest passenger ship in history and will enter service in 2004.
Late 1940s: The Queens begin their transatlantic shuttle, carrying tens of thousands of guests, from film stars and diplomats to businessmen and tourists. 1949: Cunard’s first cruise ship, the Caronia, enters service. She is known as the ‘Green Goddess’ because of the colour of her hull. 1959: The first jet airliner crosses the Atlantic. Air crossings continue to gain passengers at the expense of the great liners. It is in this year when, for the first time, more people cross the Atlantic by air than by sea. 1967: The Queen Elizabeth 2 launched by Her Majesty the Queen. 1969: Maiden voyage of Queen Elizabeth 2, now the only ship offering a scheduled transatlantic service. Queen Elizabeth 2 requisitioned by the British Government for the Falkland Islands campaign. Her

2002: On 16 January the first steel is cut to mark the formal start of construction of Queen Mary 2. On 4 July the keel is laid for Queen Mary 2. 2003: On 21 March Queen Mary 2 is floated out of the building dock. In December, Queen Mary 2 is handed over to Cunard and arrives in Southampton.

1934: The 80,744-ton Queen Mary launched and after entering service in 1936 soon gains the Blue Riband. The Queen Mary is the first merchant vessel to be launched by a member of the Royal family (Her Majesty Queen Mary). 1938: The Queen Elizabeth - the largest liner ever built - launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother). 1939: Mauretania (II) enters service. Cunard ships requisitioned once more for war. The Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth carry between them over 1.5 million troops; Churchill remarks that
2009: On the 4th September 2009 the Queen Mary 2 delivered a historic item upon her arrival in New York from Southampton. This unique item was Wedgwood's "Gift Between Nations". The unique, large scale model of the world famous Washington Monument was created by the iconic British pottery company in commemoration of their

Cunard Countess also chartered for use in the conflict. 1983: Cunard charters Concorde for the first time, thus making use of the company’s greatest competitor on the Atlantic, the jet aircraft. Cunard becomes the biggest charterer of Concorde in the world. 1997: Cunard relocates its global headquarters to Miami after being based in New York for 30 years. Cunard’s five-
250th Anniversary, and celebrates the long and illustrious links between the two great nations of Britain and the USA. 2010: On 11 October a new ship, almost identical to Queen Victoria is named. Her Majesty the Queen names the new ship Queen Elizabeth, before the ship sets sail on her maiden voyage to the Canary Islands the following day.
2004: On 8 January Queen Mary 2 is named by Her Majesty the Queen. On 12 January RMS Queen Mary 2 sails on her Maiden Voyage. She departs Southampton on 16 April on her first transatlantic crossing to New York. On 25 April both Queen Mary 2 and QE2 meet in New York – the first time that two Cunard Queens have been berthed in the port since March 1940. On 1 May both Queens arrive in Southampton – the first time two Cunard Queens have been in the company’s home port since 1967. 2006: On 6th May the keel is laid for Queen Victoria.

175th Anniversary 3 Queens together! Queen Mary 2 · Queen Victoria · Queen Elizabeth
25th May 2015 Liverpool
Right from the start Cunard Liners have repeatedly used the distinctive red funnel with two or three narrow black bands and black top. Robert Napier was responsible for this recognisable feature. This can still be seen on Cunard’s fleet today.
2015 is a very special year for the famous Cunard Line and Liverpool is the place to be! Cunard will be celebrating their 175th anniversary and what better way than to bring their 3 famous ocean liners together. The 3 Queens will sail into the River Mersey for a magnificent celebration of the 175th anniversary. On the 24th May 2015 the Queen Mary 2 will arrive at Liverpool cruise terminal followed by Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria the following day, 25th May 2015. Mid-morning the ocean liners will pull up closely to the famous Three Graces at the city’s Pier Head, Cunard’s headquarters from 1917 to 1967. This celebratory event is going to make maritime history as this is the first time Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria will have met up in Liverpool. Cunard Line’s Britannia Class of ships were the first class of ships Cunard had operating the Transatlantic route. The Atlantic steamship service in 1840 was a huge success and by 1845 steamships carried half of the transatlantic saloon passengers with Cunard Line dominating the trade. The competition for the Britannia class was high and although they were not superior to other steamers on the Atlantic they were solid, consistent players and their success was because they were the 1st homogeneous class of transatlantic steamships who provided a frequent, uniformed service. In 1840 Britannia, Acadia & Caledonia were commissioned and then 1841 Columbia was also commissioned, this enabled Samuel Cunard to provide the dependable schedule of sailings required under his mail contracts with the Admiralty- It was these that enabled him to survive when all of the early competitors failed. In addition to this tremendous celebration, on the 4th July 2015, exactly 175 years to the day after Cunard established the first scheduled service across the

Atlantic,
this is a historic recreation of the original Transatlantic crossing back in 1840 by Cunard’s Britannia. This will also mark the first time in over 50 years that passengers can depart from Liverpool on board a Cunard ship and sail to the USA.

Hooked on Cunard ...The choice and quality of food was outstanding. The best we have ever had on a cruise. The service was fantastic. We have been in suites on the other lines we have cruised with but this took things to another level and the difference of course was that we ate in the dedicated Queens Grill restaurant and at any time that suited us... The best show was two amazing acrobats. Our favourite thing to do in the evening was to enjoy the dancing in the Queens Room especially the "Strictly Come Dancing" competition and the exhibition dancing from the professional dancers. We stayed in a Queens Grill Penthouse. The cabin was spacious and comfortable. The dining in the Queens Grill was excellent with superb service, the food was the best quality we have tasted anywhere, also the staff were happy to make whatever dish one requested, also, if we did not like anything on the menu they would bring an alternative. As I said the service was superb... Review submitted at www.cruise.co.uk by Davies, London on 19th Nov 2012

Fabulous Transatlantic on Queen Mary 2 ...We had a very smooth crossing and the worst sea state during the crossing was moderate. The ship does not move much and was in a way disappointing as we were in stateroom 5173 mid ships on deck 5 so were ready should the Atlantic be rough! During the crossing I saw dolphins on 2 occasions. They look very small from the ship but it was lovely to see them... I took my Ipad this time for the first time. WIFI is included in the internet package on the ship even in your stateroom.... Review submitted at www.cruise.co.uk by: Humphrey, Grantham on 16th Aug '13 PLANETARIUM - QM2
