Day 1: Home - Paris, France Fly to Paris, the “City of Lights.” This evening, depart for the Left Bank and the original medieval quarter of the city. Meet your fellow travellers and enjoy dinner at a charming Parisian restaurant, complete with local music. Dinner will be included.
Day 2: Paris A panoramic tour of Paris reveals the breathtaking architecture of the Arc de Triomphe; the Place de la Concorde and its commanding obelisk from the tomb of Egypt’s Ramses II; Place Vendome and the Champs-Elysées. Spend the afternoon at King Louis XIV’s magnificent Palace and Gardens of Versailles, the largest palace in Europe. Relive history as you walk through the various rooms of the State Apartments including the Queen’s bed chamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Stroll the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete. A highlight of your visit will be the enchanting “Grandes Eaux” fountain show, a majestic display reminiscent of the glory days of Louis XIV. Breakfast will be included.

Day 3: Paris - Courances Orleans - Loire Valley Journey south to the Loire Valley. Once the setting for the French court, this region brims with chateaux and parks. Drive deep into the ancient royal forest of Fontainebleau and discover the Chateau de Courances during a private guided tour that features the chateau and gardens. The Ganay family has owned the chateau since 1872 and they continue to carefully maintain and develop the extensive gardens. Later, stop in the city of Orleans, famously liberated by Joan of Arc in 1429. Enjoy a locally-guided tour of this charming area before continuing to your hotel in the Loire Valley. Enjoy dinner this evening at a local bistro in Blois. Breakfast and dinner will be included.
Day 4: Chaumont - Chenonceau - Vouvray This morning visit the Chateau de Chaumont-surLoire, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and be part of the 22nd annual International Garden Festival. Tour the chateau and gardens with a local guide. The theme for 2013 is “Gardens of Sensations” and these gardens are sure to delight all of your senses. Visit Chateau de Chenonceau on the banks of the Cher River, a jewel of Renaissance architecture with traditional French gardens, a garden maze, and a silk worm factory established by Catherine de Medici. Relax with afternoon tea in this tranquil setting. Complete your day with a tour and tasting at a well-known winery in Vouvray. Breakfast will be included.

Begin your day as personal guests of Rosamée Henrion and her son in their gardens at Plessis Sasnieres where you will enjoy a guided tour. In 1960 Mme. Henrion inherited the house which had been abandoned since 1914. In the years since, she has established this substantial garden in her own style and will be pleased to welcome you to this romantic countryside oasis. After a pause in the medieval city of Tours where you can choose to eat lunch in one of the city’s many restaurants and cafes, you continue to the Chateau de Villandry, the last of the great Renaissance chateaux built in the Loire. For the past 100 years the gardens have been under the care of the Carvallo family, who have worked tirelessly to restore them to their original glory. Discover the beauty of the gardens and chateau during a private guided tour. Breakfast will be included.
Leaving the wonders of the Loire, you travel to Chartres. After a tour of the famous medieval cathedral, spend some time in town. This afternoon you travel to Giverny on the River Seine. These tranquil gardens combine flora and water elements, and inspired Monet’s greatest works when he lived in Giverny for more than 40 years. Celebrate the end of a fabulous trip with a special dinner at the Paradis Latin, Paris’s oldest cabaret theatre. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner complete with wine, champagne and a delightful cabaret show. Experience It! Chaumont-sur-Loire Garden Festival The International Garden Festival takes place annually in the castle grounds of Chateau de Chaumont-sur-Loire. Built in the 15th century, this fortress situated in the heart of the Loire Valley has been transformed through the centuries into a lavish estate. Since 1992 this festival of gardens has featured a unique panorama of landscape design from all over the world. Day 1: Home - Malaga, Spain Transfer to Granada Fly to Malaga and travel on to Granada, the last great capital of the Moors in Spain before it fell to the Catholic monarchs in 1492. Tonight, join your fellow travellers for dinner. Dinner will be included.

Day 2: Granada - Carmen de los Mártires - Alhambra - Generalife Gardens Above the city of Granada, tour Carmen de los Mártires, a magnificent palace with romantic gardens and nazarie orchards. Proceed to the world-famous Alhambra, the immense hilltop palace fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site. Alhambra translates to “red castle” and the 14th-century buildings are built from a seductive pink stone. After visiting the palace, join a garden architect for a tour of the Generalife Gardens, the most well-known gardens in Spain. The grounds are beautifully designed with waterfalls, courtyards and smaller secret gardens. Tended by 35 professional gardeners, the Moorish-influenced landscape features many rose bushes, aromatic plants and shrubs, each a delight to the senses. The gardens are divided into smaller gardens by huge green hedges which have cutouts so that you can see adjacent gardens. Day 3: Granada - Cordoba Gardens of the Alcazar - Seville Today, travel to the extraordinary Moorish city of Cordoba for a walking tour of the Mezquita 3

Join a local botanist exploring the beautiful Maria Luisa Park, one of the loveliest in all of Europe. See Plaza de España, one of the most impressive public spaces in Spain with beautiful Art Deco and Mudejar architectural styles. Day 5: Seville - Sanlucar de Barrameda - Seville Travel to Sanlucar de Barrameda, a delightful town at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, and a place from where both Columbus and Magellan set sail in search of a westerly route to the spice islands of Indonesia. Upon arrival, join the botanist on a visit to OrleansBorbon Palace and Gardens now the site of the City Hall, originally built as a summer palace. Sanlucar is one of Spain’s three famous sherry-producing areas and you will have the opportunity to visit the centuries-old, family-owned Bodegas Barbadillo for a tour and tasting of the local manzanilla wine, a variety of fine sherry. Day 6: Seville - Ronda - Seville After breakfast you depart for Ronda, one of the loveliest and most historically rich towns in Andalucia. Famous worldwide for its dramatic escarpments and views of the Serranía de Ronda mountains, Ronda is built around the deep El Tajo gorge that carries the Rio Guadalevín through its centre. See the 19th-century Alameda del Tajo gardens, set on the edge of the spectacular gorge offering fantastic views over the plains. Next, visit the gardens of the House of the Moorish King with its narrow terrace overhanging the gorge. Enjoy some free time to explore historic Ronda before returning to Seville. Day 1: Home - Lisbon, Portugal Fly to Lisbon, one of Europe’s oldest cities, and transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Lisbon - Ponta Delgada - St. Michael, Azores - Sete Cidades Fly to the Azorean island of St. Michael, the largest of the nine volcanic islands that form the archipelago. Visit a local pineapple plantation and learn about the various stages of growth and the horticultural methods involved to make them so sweet. Later, visit the twin lakes of Sete Cidades (Seven Cities), composed of two lakes inside a volcanic crater. From the edge of the crater one lake appears blue (reflecting the sky) and the other appears green (reflecting the ground). Day 3: Ponta Delgada - Antonio Borges Botanical Gardens A walking tour of Ponta Delgada features the “Portas da Cidade” (The City Gates), Saint Christ’s Church, the Carlos Machado Museum, St. Sebastian Church with its 17th-century painted tiles, the Jesuit College, and the seashore promenade. Next, a private tour allows you to explore the romantic Antonio Borges Botanical Gardens. Established by an avid 19thcentury amateur botanist, it is the largest and most verdant municipal garden on the island. Breakfast will be included. 5
Day 4: Ponta Delgada - Lagoa do Fogo - Furnas Valley - Terra Nostra Park Today, look upon the fascinating landscape of Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake). Surrounded by mountains and lush vegetation, this mystical lake rests inside the crater of an extinct volcano. In Furnas Valley, sample the local cuisine with a “cozido das furnas” lunch in which meat and vegetables are stewed in the heat of the volcanic earth. Afterwards, enjoy a fascinating talk about the creation and layout of Terra Nostra Park and gardens followed by a leisurely guided walk to discover the vast collection of plants from around the globe. Terra Nostra Park is home of the world’s largest collection of camellias. This stunning spot features tropical plants and trees, charming grottoes and a canal that winds through the grounds. Then, stop at a family-owned distillery to taste some of the natural local liqueurs. All the liqueurs are made with 100% natural raw materials and produced following a household

Day 7: Lisbon - Queluz Palace and Gardens - Lisbon A tour of Lisbon features the Moorish Alfama Quarter, Jeronimo’s Monastery (UNESCO World Heritage site), the Monument to the Discoveries, and the Tower of Belem (UNESCO World Heritage site). Lunch is included at Cozinha Velha Restaurant, known as one of Portugal’s finest restaurants. Afterwards, visit Queluz Palace and Gardens, often called the “Versailles of Portugal.” An expert horticulturist provides a private tour of these formal yet intimate gardens, highlighting the work of French architect Jean-Baptiste Robillon, the Italian marble statues, and the lead statues of John Cheere. In this elegant Baroque space the most famous section is the Malta garden, where guests would enjoy concerts, and the Hanging or Pensile garden which is laid over arches. Day 8: Lisbon - Sintra - Quinta da Regaleira Gardens - Cascais Lisbon Travel to Sintra with its mystical hills dotted with fairytale palaces and extravagant villas. The Romans and the Moors were taken by its lush landscape and later it became the summer residence of the Portuguese royal family. Poet and traveller Lord Byron called it a “glorious Eden.” Today, Sintra is
protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Join landscape architect Gerald Luckhurst on a private tour of the gardens at Quinta de Regaleira, one of Sintra’s most elaborate private estates. Dating back to the turn of the twentieth century, and created for wealthy landowner Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, the gardens are wonderfully laid out, with terraces, lakes, grottoes and fountains and an extraordinary ‘Initiation Well’ reached by a secret spiral stairway. Enjoy a delightful light lunch before visiting the ‘Palace of the Millions’, surrounded by a garden filled with statues of gods, mysterious wells, ponds and grottoes. Day 4: Tokyo - Hakone - Tokyo Start the day with a tour of beautiful Sankei-en, a traditional Japanese garden located in Yokohama. Next, set off for Hakone, part of a stunning National Park. Cruise along Lake Ashi, taking in the view of impressive Mt. Fuji reflected in its waters (weather permitting). Climb aboard a Hakone Ropeway cable car and gaze down upon Mt. Fuji, Lake Ashi, Mt. Futago, volcanic peaks, steaming hot springs and shady valleys. Breakfast and lunch will be included.
Day 5: Tokyo - Nagano Today, it’s all aboard the Shinkansen, or “bullet train,” en route to Nagano, home of the 1998 Winter Olympics. Stop at Matsumoto Castle, built in 1504, for a tour of this national treasure. Visit Daio Wasabi Nojo Farm, where pungent wasabi grows. Meet with a farmer, then roll up your sleeves and make pickles. Next, visit the Ukiyoe Museum which showcases traditional wood block prints; plus, meet with a curator who teaches you about this art. Breakfast and dinner will be included.

Visit Jigokudani Yaen Koen, the only place on earth where wild snow monkeys bathe in hot springs. Enjoy a walking tour of the Zenkoji Temple, one of the most visited temples in Japan. Founded 1,400 years ago, it is home to what many believe is the first Buddhist statue ever brought to Japan. The remainder of the day is yours to explore Nagano. Breakfast will be included.
Day 7: Nagano - Kanazawa This morning you depart for Kanazawa, one of the most well-preserved towns from the Edo period (1603-1868AD). Stop along the way at Togakushi shrine and botanical gardens which is located within the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. This Shinto shrine is actually made up of five separate shrines. See the wildflowers this area is known for as you walk the famous path, lined with 300-year-old Sugi trees, to Upper Shrine. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be included.
Day 8: Kanazawa Recall the days of the samurai when you visit Nomura Family House, the traditional residence of the Nagamachi Samuraithen district. Stroll through the renowned Oumicho Fish Market which has been providing food for feudal lords and citizens for approximately 270 years. Visit Higashi, the Geisha district, and learn about Geisha customs. This afternoon, explore Kanazawa Castle and Kenroku-en Garden, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, with a local expert. Day 9: Kanazawa - Kyoto Today, visit Natadera Temple en route to Kyoto. Originally built in 717 A.D., this striking temple incorporates several gardens, caves and cliff sides into its landscape. Breakfast will be included.

Day 8: Knysna Spend a leisurely morning exploring the waterfront area before you enjoy lunch on the docks. Next, visit the spectacular Featherbed Nature Reserve. Begin with a cruise out to the famous Knysna Heads which mark the entrance to the lagoon. Then, board a 4x4 vehicle and travel deep into the forest. Discover the local flora and fauna of the Cape Floral Kingdom during a leisurely-paced nature walk. The remainder of the day is yours to independently explore. Breakfast and lunch will be included.
Day 9: Knysna - Wilderness Hermanus This morning, travel to Wilderness, a seaside town on the Garden Route. Discover the plants of the region during a visit to the National Park Service. Day 10: Hermanus - Stellenbosch Start today with a trip to Betty’s Bay for a private tour of the peaceful Harold Porter Botanical Garden. Journey north to the Karoo Desert Botanical Garden for the opportunity to explore its collection of succulents and geophytes. Arrive at your hotel located in the heart of the Winelands region. Day 12: Stellenbosch - Cape Town Travel to Cape Town for a panoramic tour. Take a thrilling ride on a cable car that whisks you to an altitude of more than 3,000 feet, landing atop the aptly named Table Mountain.
